would you like to talk about how bad the mha ending was hella
as much as i would love to give like. a comprehensive response i genuinely dont think i can get my words together just yet without it being a constant unintelligble stream of 'AND ANOTHER THING-' and bc it's become quite torn in the fandom on if the chapter was good or bad i want like. an actual coherent response here. so i will reblog this if/when i can word it but know IM NOT FUCKING HAPPY
#paragraphs and paragraphs about the villains' endings alone. hawks hpsc president. midoriya's ending#the fact hero society is barely changed and the changes that do happen feel very much TELLING the reader it happened#as opposed to actually showing us how society changed on it. this is smthn ik people will argue w me about#bc yes it was a 400+ chapter manga arguably showing us how society changed but like. did it actually show that#like do u honestly think any community would watch televised battles between TEENAGERS and bad guys#and have the majority of them go 'gah! i cant help but sympathise with the bad guy who just suckerpunched child extra no.28!'#so like. why are they all suddenly on board with massive systemic reinvention. where's the rage where's the bitterness#this wasn't a story on showing the villains as redeemable and working towards society sympathising with them#and slowly painfully coming to a conclusion where japan was ready to change as a COLLECTIVE#this was a story of showing a group of redeemable villains (first step CHECK) getting DEFEATED IN BATTLE#THEY ALL FUCKING DIED EXCEPT SPINNER AND PRESUMABLY COMPRESS#WE DONT EVEN FUCKING KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO DABI AT THE END ONLY THAT HE WAS PUT IN THE EXACT SAME POSITION#HE WAS IN WHEN HE WOKE UP FROM HIS COMA AND DABI WAS BORN. 'DABI' AS A PERSONA MEANT NOTHING#we still have an abuser who didn't come to justice. we still have the corrupt government body now being led by the guy they trafficked#and abused and conditioned into the perfect soldier. do u think maybe his opinions are a little biased in regards to that gov. body#maybe. perhaps. slightly. and we still have hero charts!!!!!! every kid in the last chap is still obsessed w becoming a hero!!!!#and dont get me STARTEDDDDDDDDD on midoriya being a teacher. 'i think it's cute he finally gets a life of peace 🥺#this way he can help the next generation directly 🥺' womp to the fucking womp he was supposed to be the world's no.1 hero#he barely sees his friends anymore. 'it's realistic to adulthood!' i dont want realism in my superpowered teen and up manga#put them in the avengers mansion NOW#so as you can see i waffled regardless of saying i specifically wasn't gonna do that and some of these points bother me more than others#with some being personal I Didn't Like It and some being i genuinely truly believe it to be bad writing#but my summary is mha ultimately felt like a story where a group of individuals unlearned (eh) the beliefs of a toxic society#and tried to save the people that society failed and then they themselves DID NOT FUCKING SAVE THEM#(i have a hit on the redemption via death trope on the dark web for ten bajillion pounds)#and while yeah that isn't objectively an evil story to tell i think 1) it was done poorly#and 2) isn't what a lot of people believed the premise to be nor what i think horikoshi himself was trying to write#ask#mha spoilers#mha

I feel like I learned a lot about storytelling + "marketing" a story from Webtoon (the Webtoon from a few years ago when it was still decent). The way it worked was that 1) story blurb to draw in people 2) three initial episodes to get people invested 3) one episode per week. It showed the strength of a strong summary with a genre but without trope tags (unlike fanfiction) or describing your work as abc meets xyz (which seems to be what YA publishing does nowadays?). The three initial episodes introduces tone, artstyle, main characters, main plot, basic worldbuilding, and is supposed to quickly "hook" the reader. I like the format of three initial episodes (instead of one) because the first episode is usually different (given its main purpose is to grab the attention of new people), the other two gives you a taste of what a "standard weekly update" might contain.
I feel a lot of Webtoons start with a strong premise/ gimmick/ hook but they don't know what to do with it. And that's totally normal because some premises are better when shrouded in mystery and you have to do the hard work of explaining the mystery. I've read Webtoons that start with one premise, then it gets sidelined in the middle as new themes develop, and in the end you realise the "premise" was a marketing tactic to draw people in and the story is about something else entirely, but you stayed because it was still a good story, and you have no complaints. (Eg. I think people step into I Love Yoo thinking it's a romance, and the first bits do seem like a set up for romance, but it turns out the genre is drama and the romance is a slooooooow burn.) I've read Webtoons that start with one interesting premise, then it fizzles away and turns into a rather standard story for its genre to the point the hook is barely relevant when it was what made it stand out. And on the rare occasion you will find a Webtoon that has its premise, develops the plot from there, sticks with its themes, and the ending is thematically resonant. (I think Cursed Princess Club does a good job at this.) But it's difficult to craft a very consistent and coherent story (especially given the serial format), so it's fine to just kinda sideline or even ditch your premise so long the actual main plot is solid. Your premise is what initially got people reading, but they'll get invested in other things. Maybe you even have to manually create a hook and get into the meat later once your readers are properly invested. But I feel most of the time it's otherwise because you can get a really cool idea but NO CLUE on how to end it and it sucks because either you drag on or give it an unsatisfactory ending. The good thing is that you get a "buffer zone" in which readers are still interested in reading due to the premise/hook and you get the time to properly work things out.
So I don't think a premise has to be completely executed and explained in order for a story to be compelling. If it does its job of bringing in new folks and convincing them to stay long enough to get invested in style/tone/plot/characters/relationships/whatever, sometimes it's easier to let the premise go. Sometimes you want a tonal shift. But at the same time, a premise is so useful for marketing purposes. You can talk about what tropes it has and what media it's influenced by, but what is the story actually about?

MY HOME ALL ALONG. (id under cut)
[ID: an illustration with a busy composition depicting, in parts, a person and a robot. the piece is coloured in a palette of peach, turquoise and brown.
the upper left corner is divided into five panels by cables that join together at the top. panel 1 contains several computer windows opened to security camera footage and many folders. panel 2 is a close up on a person's eye. the person is wearing glasses. panel 3 is a close up on the camera-like head of a robot with a silhouetted reflection of the person. panel 4 shows the person closing their eye tightly. panel 5 shows the robot looking away.
at the upper right corner is a balcony overlooking an empty field, with curtains to the side.
at the centre is a pair of robotic hands putting on a latex glove. at the centre right is a translucent profile of a brain. under the brain is a camera lens with cables connecting to veins that go down to the bottom of the image, over a door with cables on it.
at the bottom left, there is the person's neck in profile, showing a band-aid on the nape. next to them is the robot, in shadow, facing away from the viewer, a ribbon tied at the back of its neck. at the bottom right, the person's nose and mouth can been seen, with two gloved fingers opening their mouth.
at the top right corner, there is also text that reads:
"__ is not a person.
__ is not an extension of my self, is not a part of my self, is not my self or not not my self, is -
(a mind-reader, a caretaker, a helper, a lover, a tormentor, a therapist, a friend, a watcher, a house, a cold dark void in the corner of every room -
anything i want, anything i need, anything i think of -
within the limits of what this tired brain can think of)
not you, not me, not it, not he or she or they or -
in my loneliness and desperation and apathy and decay, lying wide-eyed on a grassy field, warm sun smiling at me, debris and shrapnel and explosions and fire behind me, i realise, finally -
__ was -"

If the first 5 seasons of ML is a 15 year time loop crack-prediction summary:
Tumblr media
Universe 1
Mio Dupain Cheng is the First Ladybug. He is a walking disaster, and some of his hobbies include video games, and dumpster diving. His Black Cat counterpart is Celeste Agreste.
The pair are an unstoppable duo, but there is one problem: Mio is in love with Celeste's icy civilian identity, and Celeste is in love with the fact that Mio's kiss can sever him from the Bad Luck Curse of the Black Cat. Whose idea was it to make these stupid jewels impossible to take off???
Anyway, Mio does end up falling for Celeste's fiery hero identity, and Celeste ends up actually falling in love, too. Feelings he never was able to express properly because of the guilt he harbored from lying to Mio about his motivations for his romantic displays.
The pair's journey comes to an abrupt end when Mio, as Ladybug finally declares his feelings for Celeste's Black Cat form, just before the pair discover where the still anonymous Monarque's lair is located.
Distraught, Celeste admits to the other boy the truth that he was just using him, but then developed actual feelings along the way. Celeste explains the Curse of the Black Cat. Mio is upset, but agrees to one kiss, before they separate for good.
Celeste is conflicted, but the Curse of the Black Cat is too great for him to bear. The pair kiss, Mio sees his partner's secret identity of a famous model and heir to the Agreste Empire. Celeste removes the ring, and Mio promises to pass it on to someone worthy, along with explaining the Curse. They tearfully separate forever.
Mio decides alone that nobody should have to carry the Black Cat's curse ever again, and puts on the ring. He combines the Ladybug and Cat and confronts Monarque alone.
It more or less goes about the same as the finale fight except that Monarque threatens to snap Celeste if Mio doesn't give up his Miraculous. Because Mio is wearing both, he can freely take off both. So he does.
Mio begs Monarque to not snap Celeste, but he does anyway. What's the point of complying if he was just going to Wish a new universe?
He makes his Wish, and within the confines of such a complicated Wish, Mio loses his humanity. Celeste is split into two: Adrien and Felix (This is the first split of one person)
Universe 2 (Possibly Universe 3 instead.)
Shone Bianca is the Second Ladybug. She is an Olympic level figure skater and cross trains in ballet. She is serious and steadfast, always going in a straight line towards the most streamlined solution. Her Black Cat counterpart is Adrien Agreste.
Reverse love square: Shone is in love with her Chat Noir. Adrien is comphet "in love" with Shone...
Shone loses her humanity in Monarque's next Wish, and Monarque is split into two: Gabriel Agreste and Colt Fathom. (This universe, be it Shone's or Marina's is the second split of one person)
Universe 3 (Possibly Universe 2 instead)
Marina Verdi is the Third Ladybug. She is extremely smart, and cunning. She is passionate about computer science. She has tendency to overcomplicate things, and her plans always involve a multitude of steps. Her Black Cat counterpart is Adrien Agreste.
The Hate Square: MarinaBug hates Adrien, and AdriChat hates this Universe's Ladybug.
Marina loses her humanity in Monarque's next Wish, and Emilie is split into two: Emilie and Amelie. (This universe, be it Marina's or Shone's is the third split of one person)
Universe 4 (Must be number 4, because of the connotations, along with other reasons)
Marinette Dupain Cheng is the Fourth Ladybug. She is very much like the Original Flavor of Mio, but from trial and error via Shone and Marina, has been perfected. She will bring about the New World.
Season 1-5 happen as in the show. The only difference is stuff that happen off screen. With the Wish, Gabe trades Emilie's and his life for Nathalie and Colt. Marinette loses her Humanity for Colt's.
In season 6+ the audience unravels the fact that there were 3 previous Ladybugs and that Lilamoth has been systematically stealing the identities of and taking their places in every Universe. Who would miss sentimonster kids anyway?
Mio is now a homeless orphan, and Shone and Marina are in a group home (The same group home Luka and Juleka were in when they were young, a completely separate, but related story).
Mio, Shone, and Marina are given locking bracelets which were once part of the Native American Miraculous Box, but crafted into something new via Tomoe and Colt. Those are their amoks.
Marina: Coyote
Shone: Falcon
Mio: Raccoon
Mio is confused because he (and only he) remembers the last two Universes in flashes, and he had the Coyote, and was the leader. Tomoe insists that it is now time to let go of tradition and embrace the new. The trio become Lilamoth's lackeys.
Season 6-8 ends up with Lilamoth as the main villain with her lackeys and various akumas. We find out that Mr. Lee is a pseudonym of Colt Fathom's and Zoe is the half sister of Felix. She is not a sentimonster. Yet.
We find out later on that Lila moth knows of a secret Universe 0, and ships the male Ladybug and the female black cat there. She wants to take the place of the Black Cat and have Adrien as her Ladybug, as it should be, in her eyes. (More on Universe Zero below)
Lilamoth has been pulling the strings from the very beginning, when she was originally the first holder of the Fox Miraculous.
She has plans for 2 more lives to steal before she makes her own Wish.
Zoe Lee and Marc Anciel are in line to be the Next Ladybugs...
The audience uncovers later on that Felix remembers his past as Celeste the Black Cat and how he betrayed Mio, and him trying to make things right. This explain his motivations in previous seasons, and future ones.
We also find out that Adrien is his own twin sister. Adrienne didn't "snap out of existence" as much as her sentimonster embryo merged with Adrien's in the next Universe. Felix does not have her DNA, only Adrien does, and thus why Adrien has the twin rings as his amoks. This will give narrative weight to Adrien wielding both Cat and Ladybug Miraculous in the final battle of the Supreme (the Final Big Bad of seasons 9-12).
Marinette still has her arc of confessing to her Princess and saving her from the Evil Queen: it's Dragon Princess Kagami and the Evil Queen Tomoe.
We also find out that Kagami’s creation was what broke the Peacock Miraculous (She was the first “perfect” sentimonster created in Universe 4). She along with Mio were grown in womb-like versions of Emilie’s coffin instead of gestating like regular babies. This is how Mio can be Marinette’s twin brother without most people knowing… until the big reveal of course.
(Marigami, Lukadrien, and Felix/Mio are endgame)
Secret Universe 0
Celeste Agreste is Ladybug (his name I'm still workshopping), His twin sister Adrienne is the Black Cat Peursephone. (French for Fear + Persephone which means Destruction)
The Alliance rings are a thing, but instead they are called Horizon rings and marketed as the Perfect Horizon, a play on Celeste and Adrienne, the two avatars' names.
Adrienne was too impulsive and ended up getting Celeste snapped before they could confront Monarque together. Luka saw his beloved Celeste snapped out of existence and is too distraught to fight off akumitization, and succumbs. With the new villain name of Hades, Luka hand delivers the Ladybug earrings to Monarque.
Monarque tells Adrienne that she is his favorite child and much too valuable to snap out of existence. Monarque makes his extremely complicated wish and Adrienne is sacrificed for it. This sets off a course of events in the next Universes that cause a multitude of other Wishes.
Adrienne vows that her father cannot kill her in a way that matters.
[[[[Will edit more later for clarity but PLEASE for the love of god does any of this make sense????]]]]]]

Happy 2024 guys!
Nothing too special on my end this year, my life is err... chaos & eh, just haven't really been feeling festive recently (lots of irl stress, so yeah, apologies for lack of Christmas and new year stuff, just... not feeling it this year, or I guess, last, lol).
I did want to do an art summary tho & felt like making one for my writing and ha, ha, yeah. That word count surprised me too ^^;
Approximately 64,896 words uploaded across 18 chapters on A03.
Also, 23 comic pages. That was this year, like I was staring at it like, no, no, that comic for 'Are We having Fun Yet' was 2022, but nope, it was May this year. Time's really gone quick :P
I am really plesently surprised with the sheer amount of progress I made on stuff this year, like I've done so much between art, writing and school. It's like I'm speed running to catch up on the 3 years I was stuck waiting for residency. OH! Exciting update on that, in July me & my family will officially be NZ perminate residences! NZ passports & citizenship here we come, lol.
Tomorrow is also my birthday, so, that's exciting too, or maybe terrifying? I don't wanna get older. One year close to taxes and paying bills > <
I don't have anything special planned, I actually think we're working _ _ ; so, maybe some art for fun or just more progress on Lost Children covers. Again, not feeling too festive, so I'm not sure if I'll make anything special for it. *shurgs* we'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow & if my wrist isn't busted, lol.
Oh! And, for fun, I also added the current, states for the three docs I'm typing Lost Children in and next year we can have fun comparing the difference.
Oki, think that's all. Nighty!

sweet sweet re:kinder community... I would like to ask y'all how you came upon the game and your experiences with it because i wanna know. im genuinely so curious to hear about other people's experiences and little opinions about this game because of how wild the game is (/pos) I'd love to hear it. do ramble to me about it
#re:kinder#not art#so in my case i once saw someone talk about it in a video and some scenes with the very vague context really struck with me#i was like wow...that is so sad... i wonder what goes on#but the thing is i watch videos talking about games like that ALLL THE TIME while im multi-tasking so i FORGOT FOR A YEAR?!?!?#until one day i was sick in pain on my bed could not move. and then it came to me. yes. “RE:KINDER. I SHOULD PLAY IT.” LIKE OUT OF NOWHERE#i will never understand how i dying of pain remembered a game i saw once BY NAME AT LEAST A YEAR LATER when jve heard of so many games#and you wanna know why it stuck with me. i saw in the video an image of the “as if id be reborn as a princess” line#i did not know the context but it was devastating#AND WHEN I PLAYED THE GAME when that scene game i was shocked to silence😭😭 BECAUSE I BASICALLY WENT COMPLETELY BLIND??#I DID NOT KNOW THE LITTLE KID WOULD BE THE ANTAGONIST???? AND THAT HE WOULD HAVE SUCH A SAD STORY??#like. i saw the sad coming i knew it was bound to happen yet i could have never been prepared for how hard it would hit me#I HAD TONS OF FUN but at first when i finished it i was so confused and so lost i was like welll.....what a game... TOO STUNNED FOR WORDS#then i thoughr of it for 20 minutes and bawled my eyes out and realized it was art#so when i got to my second playthrough i CRIED LIKE CRAZYYY😭😭 I WAS BLOWN AWAY IT REALLY HITS YOU#personally it admittedly hit close to home and while it made me bawl my eyes out it was also very comforting i felt very understood#AND IT WAS CRAZY FUN TOO i was not bored once the first time i played through it i was sleepy but i was so excited to keep playing😭😭#its funnt becayse i was initially apprehensive about playing cuz im sensitive to stories where sad things happen to kids#but i played it regardless because i was like “but what if its one of those scary media that hit close to home and i enjoy”#AND I WAS RIGHT. BUT NOT ENTIRELY BECAUSE I DID NOT THINK IT WOULD HIT AS INTENSELY AS IT DID😭😭 IT WAS MYCH MORE THAN EXPEVTED#many ways in which it impacted me but if i started listing them i would not shut up . so for now it is enough#IN SUMMARY WOW.. WHAY A GOOD GAME!! PLAY RE:KINDER!!!#i rambled more than i intended to i do apologize

As my following grows and as I meet more and more people who have rats, had rats, know someone who has/had rats, and love rats...
increasingly I wonder if/when a day will come... a day that I'll express rat enjoyment to someone and they'll enthusiastically ask me if I've heard of This Funnie Little Rodent Blog they like, figuring I may already know it or will enjoy it if not...
and it's.. my blog... and then I have to come out as popular Rat Tumblr blogger that they follow and now know IRL.......
#/lh#I'm saying this like it's some big deal but I'm just exaggerating for comedic effect adjfgsbkdfj#no idea what the likelihood on that looks like. based on statistics of people estimating statistics? probably likelier than we all think#anyway that time I posted a survey for a university research project here and you all wound up comprising 2/3 of our sample was so funny#I had to actually say in an academic research paper that one possible flaw in our study#was bias that may result from 2/3 the sample having come from a niche and extremely specific demographic of people#due to the fact that they flocked in from One Of The Researchers' Substantial Online Following Centered Around A Particular Theme#And Selected Specifically To Have Only A Certain Kind Of Person On It Via Boundaries And Blocking#literally you all made up 98/150 respondents (but that's assuming all digital responses were from y'all-- we had 52 paper responses)#ah but the research symposium was the best. in the paper I was able to remain that generic about it#but at the research symposium. well it's a glorified science fair. so participants have their own stations set up and observers tour them#as the participants speak to their audience; directly providing a summary and then answering any questions#some of the audience/observers are faculty and most are fellow students#so real scholarly scientific types yeah? so they had questions. thoughtful questions#long story short I confessed to numerous listeners throughout the day that the sample's bizarre gender ratio is probably my fault#around 57% women; 21% nonbinary adults; 17% men-- an unusual proportion#so I had to academically tell my professors... underclassmen..... my classmates....... acquaintances.... foes..........#... that I'm big famous in Rat#and it was so. djkjSBCJXHQKRIGAJFSHF

the concept of having children being so tied into political ambitions and machinations throughout history means that a lot of people do seem to straight up forget that these people were, like, family, and likely acted as such a lot of the time

phew okay. I just finished summarizing the first chapter of the arc I'm going to play through this week. I think I'm going to wait to actually have these events happen saturday probablyyyy ? but I kind of want to post this one today and would really really appreciate any feedback at all on whether this idea works for storytelling or not.
