The "Witch Detective" book and "Twilight"

In the English version of Persona 4, the protagonist can read a book called "Witch Detective", and the book is described to be a parody of "Twilight".

Someone on Reddit asked what it said in Japanese. The "Twilight" bit is an English rewrite.

In the Japanese game, the book is called "Magical Detective Loveline", and the text describes a romantic comedy that starts with an ordinary girl named Lovely (from "Loveli"ne) meeting a magical dog.

The Japanese summary explains why when Nanako cosplays as "Magical Detective Loveline" in the Persona 4 anime, she has the talking dog toy.

I'm not really sure why the English version rewrote it to be a dunk on "Twilight", but that is very 2008-ish humor.

Q: Please tell us about yourself!

A: Hi! I’m Ren, an unproductive night owl. I like video games and Persona 4 Golden is not an exception.

Q: Who is your favorite Persona 4 character and why?

A: Naoto! I view him as a trans man and I see a lot of myself in him, especially when reading the Persona 4 manga. I also really like Kanji and Yosuke—I’m always drawn to slapstick humor, especially the scene where Yosuke draws his swords in broad daylight at Junes.

Q: Which Persona 4 characters/s do you find fun/challenging to write/draw and why?

A: For me, Souji is a bit challenging to write. I’m still trying to figure out my characterizations of him and how I want to portray him, mainly when it comes to dialogue.

Q: What are your favorite Persona 4 ships?

A: Kanji/Naoto and Souji/Yosuke. I was hooked on them before I started playing P4G, but I’ve since come to love their canon interactions.

Q: Which Arcana do you see yourself as?

A: I’d say I see myself as the Hermit Arcana. For the most part, I tend not to draw too much attention to myself.

Q: What's your favorite trope?

A: Friends with benefits. I love the various messy ways characters deal with their feelings through this trope.

Q: Do you have a favorite Persona?

A: Dominion is almost always on my roster whenever I need a Justice persona. I just think he’s kinda neat.

Q: What made you want to become a writer?

A: I’ve always been creative as a kid, and I’ve always liked writing about characters of fandoms I liked. It wasn’t until I reached college that I got to be serious about my writing, though.

Q: How did you get into the Persona series?

A: A friend from school cosplayed as the Persona 5 protagonist a couple of years back, but it wasn’t until late 2021 that I’d really gotten interested in Persona as a whole. I borrowed my cousin’s PS3 to play the original Persona 5 and eventually I fell in love with the other Persona games too.

Q: What would you like to accomplish with your contribution to AOA zine?

A: For my contribution to AOA, I’d like the fic to be humorous and entertaining. I’d also like to nail Kanji’s dialogue/characterization since it’ll be my first time truly writing something in his point-of-view save for a few drabbles.

Finding models of healthy masculinity in BL manga

The first time I came out, initially as genderfluid, it was because of a cosplay based on a character from my favorite M/M ship. It was 2017. I was going to dress as Hanamura Yosuke from the game Persona 4, and I needed a binder in order for the cosplay to be “accurate”. Nervously, I asked my mom, and when she said yes, I followed up with my coming out. I was very lucky, and my mother and the rest of my family were incredibly accepting, working on using the correct pronouns and helping me find more binders and masculine clothing.

When it comes to BL, the Persona 4 fandom served as my introduction. I was a big fan of the “Souyo” pairing of the protagonist, Souji (as he was known in the game’s manga adaptation), and his best friend and “partner”, Yosuke. I became very invested in the ship, and would often project my own fears and insecurities onto Yosuke when I wrote fanfic. In retrospect, I recognize that as something that let me safely imagine myself as a boy in a relationship with another boy. That desire to find media that would let me project myself into the positions of these male characters was what led me to discover BL.

The more invested in the pairing I became, the more media I looked for featuring them. This included zines and long-form comics by English-speaking fans that resembled doujinshi. One particular fic was an Alternate Universe based on the 2007 BL manga Seven Days. After enjoying the story, I was curious about the original work, and quickly discovered fan translations. Enjoying what I read, I continued down the rabbit-hole.

I was 15 years old and not sure where to start. Many of the most popular, easily accessible, and non-explicit titles available in English still featured harmful tropes like harassment and sexual coercion; it was often easier to turn to fan translations of unlicensed stories. There was one particular manga that was available, though,  that I found sweet and charming: Go For It, Nakamura!
