So this starts with Danny becoming the ghost king on his 18th birthday and almost immediately every power-hungry ghost in existence starts proposing to him. At first he just ignores it but after the 10th time someone tries to kidnap him to marry him Greek god style, he’s fucking sick of it and goes to Clockwork for help.

He’s not much help. The only way for other people to stop trying to marry him is if he’s already married. What’s more, because he’s the king of the infinite realms, it has to be someone that’s considered a citizen of the Infinite Realms. (Like he can marry someone that’s still alive but they wouldn’t count and people will just keep trying to marry him) CW also warns him that people will try and kill anyone he marries if they can so a living person isn’t really ideal. The only bit of real helpfulness he does provide is a list of non-evil non-power-hungry citizens so he can have an easier time finding someone.

So Danny takes the list and starts crossing of names (like Johnny, even tho the guy won’t abuse the power of being the ghost princess, kitty would kill Danny for good this time) when he comes across the perfect candidate.

Jason Todd (Robin/Red Hood)

He’s been to Gotham before, knows the Robins all do good work and knows the Red Hood is already a good and fair ruler of his criminal underground. Plus the guy could definitely fight off any ghost trying to kill him even without the power boost and some helpful weapons Danny would give him if he agrees. Plus he has the perfect bargaining chip to get the guy to help by offering to fix the corrupted ectoplasm in him (not that he wasn’t gonna do that anyway when he had the time to but Hood didn’t need to know that)

So Danny hops over to Gotham and after quickly getting permission from Lady Gotham (she’s very protective of her Knights) heads over to crime ally and pitches the idea to Red Hood.

Which basically goes like-

Danny: so I give u, the title of prince, access to the Infinite Realms whenever u wish, a sweet private wing in my castle, any of the op ghost weapons in the castles armoury and a fix for ur rage problems and u marry me so I stop getting people trying to propose to me in increasingly more annoying ways :)

Jason, a literature geek with a secret desire to be the protagonist in a shitty YA romance: u had me at Prince

So the two of then jump over to the Infinite Realms to get married thinking it’ll take 30 minutes top only to learn that CW left out that a Royal wedding has to take at minimum a week otherwise no one will consider the Marriage valid. So the two, not backing out at this point, join in on the week of parties and celebrations without putting much more thought into it.

Meanwhile back in Gotham, after not having Red Hood check in after his patrol, Oracle searches CCTV and finds Jason having a conversation with a figure that is glitching out the camera to much to identify them, then the figure seemingly grabs Jason and drags him into a portal and the two of them disappear.

So obviously the Batfam comes to the conclusion that Jason was kidnapped by some sort of magical being and calls in John. He identify the magic as that of the ghost king’s and has been hearing that the king had been looking for a bride so comes to the conclusion that Jason has been kidnapped Persephone style to be be married and is under the (wrong) conclusion that it will mean Jason can’t leave the realm of the death after.

And so the Batfam + Constantine start planing to crash a wedding.

I’m so curious to see how they’ll handle actually actually defeating/killing Chronos, and still having the classic replayability of Hades. Like I assume we’re gonna at some point actually kill him etc, like in the first game we defeated Hades once but it took many more wins to actually get Persephone back to the house. And will we get to see any of the other members of the house?? I kinda feel doubtful but god I’d KILL to have a Melinoë-Zagreus interaction, and also Melinoë-Persephone reunion, I need to see them happy 😭.

I feel like whatever the resolution will be, it can’t be too drastic, bc obv Mel still has to be in the crossroads in order to maintain replayability, but who knows, maybe they’ll be more creative!

In any case I’d love to hear theories about the thing in Zag’s chambers if there are any.

Congaher brothers: Zed and Maynard love their younger brother, so of course when they’re told to get close enough with you they do so willingly. Though they aren’t expecting to get attached themselves. They genuinely approve of their brothers choice and make a point to try and hint at him. They fight for your attention a LOT. Which is difficult to get considering their predicament. But they gotta act fast because they know when Dell is gonna need you. Its gonna have to take some convincing from Maynard because Zed is too childish and whiny about you refusing to go. Maynard suggests that the ‘attraction’ they run is owned by their brother and you should go. They feel bad when they have to kill you and go on. They feel really bad, especially because what they were told to do was to make sure your conscious only was ran through the respawn. They however, refuse because it’s ducking rude Dell should have you only to himself. Becomes sort of a Persephone situation.

Dell: Dell can’t find himself getting mad at his brothers for getting attached, though this does mean he makes targeted alterations to the timeline. Some key to getting you near him. You’ve seen him in ‘dreams’ from what he can gather. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t pleased with the look of fear on your face, as collected as he is he can’t deny himself that satisfaction. You talk to him more through ‘dreams’ and he’s proud that he’s been able to make you laugh on more than one occasion. He knows what he can do to get you through the respawn machine but here… here he can build a solid connection with you without infringing on his brothers time to build a platonic bond. He’s proud to have strategized this, and he knows when y’all get together, for eternity that you’ll thank him.

Medic: Medic himself is not amused with the situation he finds himself in. A person deciding to follow him around after he’s done with his job, en route constantly asking him about his day. But as he notices more, as the loop continues he noticed you more. He noticed how you’d always smile with brilliance. How you always remarked him so happily, even though he felt he didn’t deserve it. And what would happen if he just decided to- keep you? To keep tapes, to keep mementos. He’d get this violent itch, to wear your skin against his. (Going as far as to hide a Walkie-Talkie talkie in your house so he can tell what you’re doing when you get home.) he’s most calm when he can hear you breathe.

Spy: Jacques believed he was entitled to you before he even started working with Jane. He’d always seen you walking and constantly tried to woo you to no avail. He eventually decided he’d become very pissy with you when not offered sufficent attention. He’d become very very outspoken about his rejection, going so far as to track you til you threatened to tell the police. Not caring he’d advance till he managed to find where you lived. If you tried to change the place you’d stay it would only put you closer to him. And he liked it that way. Until he didn’t, until you started to feel off as well. The same song and dance skipped over and repeated and then where it ended it would start again. You’d change a tactic and he would ensure your day was hell until the day rewound.

Episode 2 review:

Okayyyyyyy lots to unpack here…. Look… I know this is a dark comedy but do we really need to have a scene where Hera disguises herself as Zeus and have sex with one of his lovers in order to trick them? Did no one tell the writers that lying about your identity to trick someone into having sex with you is rape? The gods, especially Hera, have done awful things in mythology, why not use any of those stories instead of making up random shit? Arghhhhhhhhh also why does Zeus kill his newborn child at Hera’s request? Zeus is known to be stubborn when it comes to his children he would’ve had some convoluted plan to rescue it like he did with Dionysus.

Why is Polyphemus just a guy with an eyepatch and not an actual Cyclops? LAAAAAAAME

I haven’t mentioned this in my first review but why tf does Zeus take human sacrifices? He is very aggressively against human sacrifices in mythology the only Olympians who take human sacrifices are Artemis and Ares WHO AREN’T EVEN IN THIS DAMN SHOW

Look I don’t mind making changes to mythology but this show is really testing my patience bc most of the changes make no sense.

Whatever let’s talk positives:

I like Hades and Persephone;s dynamic here, I’m sick and tired of emo Hades and naive Persephone portrayals so I like how they are an old couple here, it’s cute.

That scene where Zeus calls his kids is very funny, I like how they have different names for him.

That couple that wanted to resurrect their son really tugged on my heartstrings

The Eurydice and Orpheus plot like is the only one I’m genuinely enjoying in this show

I like that Medusa is working in the underworld, when I heard that “fuck the gods” speech in the trailer I thought “oh fuck they’re gonna be cringe about her Roman mythology” thankfully they weren’t, wish she was actually monstrous tho…

I guess the overall vibes of this episodes is that its positive elements are stronger while the negative elements are worse.

Watching Netflix’s Kaos so you don’t have to

Episode One review:

Ok so everyone pointed out how Americanized this show looked but it’s also hella British not just with the actors but with the tone, also I’m pretty sure Crete doesn’t look like that.

Anyway one thing that’s really confusing me is if the original mythology actually happened in the past of this universe. Like are Orpheus and Eurydice (Argh why do they call her Riddy that’s such a stupid nickname) reincarnations of their original selves? Is president Minos the same as King Minos? The most confusing thing of all is Dionysus’s arc, it’s all about him wanting to prove himself to his father as powerful god and expand his domain… but if he’s already an Olympian hasn’t he already done that? In mythology he literally had a whole journey going around Greece and beyond to make mortals worship him and earn a place among the Olympians, wouldn’t the show version already do that? This is all very confusing.

Anyway… why do the temples of the gods look like Christian churches? How do you westernize an already western culture? (With an eastern religion no less) And why does that priestess of Hera (who is Eurydice’s mother btw) have her tongue cut off??? And how does that make Hera able to hear her worshippers prayers? This is such a bizarre attempt to make the gods seem cruel and uncaring but Hera doesn’t do anything close to that in mythology, she’s does other cruel shit but the show doesn’t lean on that for some reason.

Sighhhhhhhhh I could complain about more stuff but I’m willing to hear this show out maybe it will ease my concerns idk

5. how could olympus and the underworld turn into a shitshow after persephone left? literally tho, she should have been a nobody. all the citizens should only know is that 1) hades ripped a guys eye out for her and 2) she killed humans and didn't report it to zeus. if anything, the citizens should've believed persephone deserved to be punished, and that hades is an immature manchild for what he pulled in the court,,,

6. Why doesn’t Cerberus have three heads. I’m sure this has been asked before but how you gonna write Cerberus without three heads—the one defining trait this dog has. Where are the other heads. Where are they

7. this is such a minor thing but WHY ARE NONE OF THE EYES IN LO LINED UP PROPERLY. I have a lazy eye and if I don't focus on it long enough it can go out of focus/look elsewhere, but I don't think that's what happening?? Why are their eyes always looking in different directions 😭

8. what I don't think Rachel gets this, but having Persephone and Hades cling to someone they barely know from a decade+ ago shows a huge lack of mental and emotional maturity on their ends. I realize it's a bit more complicated because we do know they end up together, but that's why placing it before they even start dating is just a bad idea. This isnt a case of lovers/spouses longing to see each other again, it's two grown adults with the emotional maturity of 15 year olds.

9. Rachel don't draw women with heart shaped faces, hourglass bodies, and huge eyes challenge (impossible for her specifically difficulty)

10. why would hebe even want to be like her mom anyway? hera was emotionally and mentally neglectful of her, abandoned her so zeus presumably raised her himself, and hera is a hypocritical, racist jerk who cheats on her husband, is misogynistic to other women, openly married zeus for power, told others about persephone's assault without her consent, mistreats her own "friend", and abuses her power of everyone else. rachel really wants us to buy she's a ~complicated woman~ over just being an asshole.

Oh, that was easy. Good! For now, at least. Let's see how far this character development goes.

So if my theory is true, then he doesn't know about it. Still not refuted, though. Lots of things still pointing towards it.

It's nice they do love eachother, though.

Aaaaaawwww- wait, is that a thing that actually happens? Do gods turn into stardust if mortals stop believing in them in this setting? Is that why Zeus will try to do something when-

Yup, sounds good. Persephone has lived a life where she's had to adapt and shape and perfect herself to deal against the currents of other people's expectations being imposed onto her without any real warning. Now she has something SHE wants secured, and a partner who loves and respects her, so she wants to savor that, instead of just swallowing it.

Hades' lips, tho.

I love that Hades is still conscientious about boundaries and not assuming things about their relationship, even immediately after they just finally cemented it. But yeah, you can sleep together now, bro, you've earned it and also you just did that before the makeover.

Hera has good taste and also it shows that she chose it.

Yeah, about that.

Poor Demeter, even your daughter couldn't stop for a second to spare you a thought.

We know the broad strokes of how this situation will develop, but I was thinking earlier if she'll go put pressure on Hestia and that could make her falter. We are back to a very liminal part of the story, where we know the direct next step but it'll probably get somewhat extended for a while. It could be that her and Hestia will try to pressure her into the "no sex and relationships allowed" clause and THAT's when they get to know about the rape, but it's a low probability. I swear it's not that I'm obsessed with that reveal, I'm just considering all options of how the situation may unfold for all the characters.

Something that I do think will happen soon, however, is Adonis. For those not in the know, Adonis was found by Aphrodite as a baby but she gave him to Persephone to raise, so it fits this part of the story where she will be living alone and we'll get to see some more domestic bliss with Hades, this time with the family he wants, even if it's not biological. Adonis then chooses to stay with Aphrodite over Persephone and I think this will also tie into Psyche and Eros' story. As in, I think that whole cursed thingy that Perse gives to Psyche when she's on errands for Aphrodite might be a revenge prank gone wrong, but who's to say. Keep in mind however, that according to myth Adonis is killed by either Ares or Apollo or both, so that'll be juicy. I should probably make a masterpost of my predictions, actually.

OKAYOKAYOKAY now that i've had a few nights to Ruminate here are way too many thoughts from 9/16's show -- fair warning that they aren't *super* coherent as a lot of this i just tried to loosely organize from dms i threw at folks night-of, but it is most of what i remember sticking out to me!

GENERAL THOUGHTS --

last saw the show in august of 2019 - back then i saw it up in the mezzanine, this time i was 7 rows back dead center in the middle of the orchestra. watching the show from the mezzanine feels like a god's eye view of the show while sitting up close in the orchestra is much more like being in the world of men, and how it hits in hadestown particularly is just nuts bc you really do feel like you're on the factory floor.

back in the London production i remember eva playing eurydice with more youth and hope to her, and when the show came to Broadway eurydice hardened. in a world with a pandemic eva seems to have actually shifted this back! Eurydice is still holding tightly onto Orpheus Knowing that the world is unlikely to be kind enough to let them have each other for long but she starts off less faithless than she used to, I suppose I would describe it? she's definitely played more open with others from the beginning rather than having it be something she has to really work towards!

WAIT FOR ME IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FEELING FROM THE ORCHESTRA THAN THE MEZZANINE AND NOT JUST THE LAMPS. the lamps really only swing out to over the first 2 rows, speaking very generously, anyway. what i remember being most impactful from last time was how the whole theater rumbled as the walls of the set split to reveal hadestown. what i couldn't see and afaik no boot's been able to pick up is the the set ALSO SPLITS AND STRETCHES OPEN AT THE TOP. that awning that covers the balcony lifts and the wall of hadestown is revealed to stretch floor to ceiling and it is just so much, so fucking much oh my god i could not stop hysterically blubbering to myself watching hadestown stretch open like it is absolutely here to devour you whole. it makes you feel the immensity of The Wall. I've linked ig videos of the set pre act 1 and post intermission to give like the best perspective on it i can and tried to film them so they were zoomed as closely as to what my eyes were seeing as I could, but here are also some pictures!

PRE ACT ONE

INTERMISSION

after our lady of the underground when eurydice comes back from hades' office and Persephone is finishing with her show, me being closer this time i was actually able to see amber's face during way down hadestown ii and flowers. and how she portrays seph's feelings re eurydice, it's like : genuine concern and watching over her when she first starts on the line, Quiet Seething and Jealous Rage as the fates' tattle "Hades put his hands on ya" that sticks for a While including the first half of flowers, but as soon as eurydice remembers the meadow her and Orpheus visited her heart just b r e a k s and you can see her wiping away tears. seph's just so caught in her own feelings of helplessness in hadestown. when hades tells her to stay out of him dealing with Orpheus all the fight just deflates out of her and the direct accusing look Orpheus gives her at the end of if it's true mixed with seeing his effect on the workers makes her physically rear back like she's gotten the fight slapped back into her

even with this audience who almost for sure has all seen ht before, there was still the loudest heartbroken gasp when orpheus turned. i know everyone calls this out but it still hit me hard that with a greater percentage of previous viewers in the audience it still hit us all like a fucking brick

and ofc. road to hell ii. it's a millions times more impactful than it already was what with the pandemic, making it through hard times and how they could be hard again but making the best of them even if it doesn't turn out well this time either. i was crying so hard last time but this time i was crying harder but also feeling like a huge weight was being like, very softly cradled in my chest to take some of the burden away

TOM'S HADES/HADES AND PERSEPHONE SPECIFIC THOUGHTS --

Tom's Hades whole tl;dr could be that Hades is a Performance. all those descriptions of him beign "jazzy" and "egodriven" are correct, but there is also this massive vibe he gives off that all his showmanship is there as a cover up for the very pessimistic man at the core of him. when him and persephone are getting along the jazziness is there for genuine playfulness with her, but apart from seph it is a purposeful exaggeration on hades' part to get Whatever it is that he wants. he is playing up aggression as king (see papers) and what he thinks as being suave (see hey little songbird) to maintain his throne and his marriage, and Epic III is the Destruction of that performance. Tom's Hades at the end of Epic III isn't trying to sell anyone anything, you just get to see the suddenly very scared and unsure heart of the man behind the performance of foreman and king. And oh boy is Tom's Hades at his heart unsure. He is so fucking pessimistic; back in Act 1 when Orpheus starts to sing Epic I he turns from Persephone even before she gets reminded of the world above and starts longing for it, because he already expects to see it coming and he doesn't turn back to her Ever Again, literally until he comes to get her in Way Down Hadestown. Not even when she gives him a kiss on the cheek goodbye. His Kiss, The Riot is him trying to figure out how the hell he's gonna be able to rebuild his performance after his whole kingdom saw through it, but he also ends it being so very certain that the deal he figures out for Orpheus Will end with Orpheus failing somehow. There is no doubt in this very pessimistic Hades that doubt will come in, whereas Patrick used the end of His Kiss The Riot almost like he was desperately trying to justify that his doubt came to him only in Persephone's absence

road to hell i: tom's hades loves cheering on the band so much he is Part Of The Problem that Hermes has to get to chill out and it makes so much sense for this jazzy dramatic motherfucker

balcony time (road to hell i until livin' it up on top): when they were upstairs playing dominoes they kept laying their tiles with these overexaggerated movements.. Like when they actually getting along they are so damn flirty and trying so hard to make each other smile and laugh and it is TOO CUTE

way down hadestown: Once Again "I missed ya" gives me no rest, mostly because Tom delivered it with this super coy and cocky grin and Amber immediately smiled back at him like Persephone couldn't help herself

chant i: is spent with him looking up proud into his creation while persephone is looking down with heartbreak and disgust seeing the workers as people in suffering and the ugliness of hadestown. as the song goes on he gets increasingly frustrated like a child who's super proud of the drawing he brought home from school that Persephone has nothing but terrible things to say about. when eurydice starts singing about her suffering seph throws out her arm and points to her like "see! See what you're doing!!" while hades is more in himself processing his disappointment, frustration, heartbreak, but over the next minute you start to see him Formulating A Plan as he watches eurydice. but he doesn't look entirely sold on going through with it until seph throws out her last verse in disgust. it was absolutely the straw that broke the camel's back.

hey little songbird: THO IT SOUNDS SO SEDUCTIVE ON AUDIO. OML DOES IT LEAN INTO EURYDICE'S "STRANGE MAN" DESCRIPTOR. HADES IS LIKE THE CREEPY SALESMAN ON THE CORNER WITH WATCHES AND A TRENCHCOAT. BUT HE'S SELLING HIS SHIT WELL, HE'S JUST ALSO A WEIRDO

Why We Build The Wall/"Behind Closed Doors": That followup on hades' threat when eurydice arrives in hadestown. as hades goes to the stairs he like not whacks, but definitely nudges seph's arm harder than Patrick does to get her attention. when he did she Startled and laid her hand over her arm where he'd tapped her like she was overwhelmed by just that touch........ but then she turns around and watches him take Eurydice up and when he opens his coat and she Realizes you see her whole body go slack. once eurydice goes past the office doors hades turns and lingers staring pointedly down at seph, for *seconds* whereas with patrick i remember it being more of a pointed glance. it drills home that hades is doing this specifically to spite seph and he wants her to know it. and you can see amber discreetly wipe her face before she turns back to "does anybody want a DRINK." there's less direct seduction between hades and eurydice but more explicit threat between hades and seph about eurydice

papers: actually isn't too much Bastärde as it is his Performance. HOWEVER, the way he directs the workers to beat Orpheus is chilling. Like patrick he hangs around, but he's watching until the last 10 seconds so it's way longer. And he makes like the smallest gestures with his hand to direct the workers to the different stages of beating Orpheus, fuck it was twisted

how long: how long actually starts with seph and hades seemingly coming to each other on a similar page - hades came out pensively fiddling with his wedding ring and Amber delivered "I know" like seph was already past the eurydice situation. this also could have been a product of time and seeing how actually little he did "seducing" eurydice lmao

chant ii: very much Hades Sees Orpheus As A Threat™️ (more on this further below) , also dare i say it but tom kills I CONDUCT THE ELECTRIC CITY

epic iii: oh man oh man. he looks so untouched until Orpheus starts the lalas and he goes from completely passive unimpressed face to like. his body unfolds on his stool and his hands go slack and he looked between Orpheus and Persephone when he asked where Orpheus had gotten his melody. he asked it a lot softer than I expected him too as well. a big part of the audience actually laughed when Hades sang his lala because Tom cracks his voice during it but it petered off into sniffling when they realized why and then we were all just crying together as persephone placed the flower in his vest.

lovers desire: SOME VERY CUTE STUFF. hades' performance is broken but tom's hades is still a Jazzy Jazzy Man at heart and they're like 100 times more playful with each other - they're both giggling and grinning their asses off while they dance together and give each other these like nudges to the next series of steps and it was adorable and I was discretely sobbing. they both played it like they knew how to do this dance with each other better than they knew anything, the little nudges were like..... them playing inside this dance they already knew so well? Like more overexaggeration to make each other laugh and just revel in this wonderful thing they've rediscovered- specifically I remember that Amber raised her skirt soooooo high when she was doing the curtsey and Tom was like waggling his eyebrows at her and adding extra flourishes with his hands and widening his eyes super big everytime he pulled off a move (the funniest ones were when they do like the two-step where they move one after another in sequence and he's copying her moves in reverse and oml it was just adorable). When Seph had the move where she pulls their linked arms over his head to tuck him into her I remember that was the one part where he wasn't doing this goofy act but his expression straight up melted and he looked so smitten. and when it's the last bit of the dance and he spins her across the stage, seph's face breaks open with tears his expression responds with like this mix of heartbreak and "ohhhhh no baby please don't cry" as he moved across the stage to quickly take her into his arms for the dip at the end

AFTER this when orphydice has finished promises and right before Orpheus turns to ask Hades if they can go, they come out of slow dancing to the side but are still super wrapped up in each other - seph wraps herself around one of his arms and presses herself super close and Tom leaned down with this little smile like Hades was gonna try and steal a quick kiss, but then he hears/sees out of the corner of his eye/senses or something Orpheus approaching and pulls himself up and formal to be the king. When he says I don't know and seph wrenches herself away from him to the other side of the stage to firmly stand behind Orphydice he gets this look of Extreme Frustration on that she's still not standing with him and these damn kids are still more important, bc even with character growth he still is a petty selfish bitch who does not like to share lmao, he's just getting that he Has To now

wait for me ii: Hades stays onstage by the microphone stand to the left to watch Hermes deliver his judgement to orphydice/seph/the workers and watching Tom during this was a Treat. this is the first time he's seeing how orphydice and esp Orpheus function when he's not involved to terrify them. they're so sweet and so good, and they have what looks like so much unwavering faith in each other unlike him and seph, maybe they really could... so when he delivers "i let them try" that last word is stretched with so much wonder. he's getting this first glimpse into feeling how everyone else felt when orpheus sang of how the world could be that isn't just focused in about how he feels about persephone, which always drives him - now he's having to deal with the Greater Implications and orpheus' seemingly unbreakable faith in a better world rocks him to his core. that certainty that orpheus would fail gets shaken as he watches them and when Seph asks him if he thinks they'll make it, his I Don't Know is 1/2 defensive and 1/2 actual uncertainty. he still hates to be wrong but he's wondering if his beliefs about doubt will turn out differently this time. he isn't optimistic about it by any means but orpheus, eurydice, and the workers' response to them both does give him pause

meanwhile in hades and persephone's section, on a personal level they deliver their lines to each other like they're a great deal more nervous about what next fall will bring than i've seen and heard before - something I'm thinking stems from hades' worldview being so suddenly shaken and seph too being a little more vulnerable?

MISC THOUGHTS

Tom seems to be leaning into Hades not having done anything with Eurydice other than tempt her down - once she's in Hadestown even during Why We Build The Wall he drops the salesman croon entirely and when he does rarely speak to her/about her it's commanding as a king who sees her just as another object under his possession, with very little interest in her for anything at all beyond that. he was just going after the goal of making sure Seph knew he had Options whether or not he actually pursued them

tom is super dedicated to how power-hungry hades is. I remember when I saw Patrick during chant ii he was playing hades as more affected by how much seph seemed to care about the workers now and desperately trying to get her attention back (even negatively), Tom was more consumed in seeing Orpheus as a threat because of how effectively he had turned his "children" on him. He knocks Seph down in those "shackle her from wrist to wrist" less as a personal petty attack to her like Patrick does and more like to try and destabilize her as someone backing Orpheus up. Tom's Hades perceives Orpheus as a Threat no matter how much he plays up his Performance as Nonchalant Jazzy King. he really emphasizes Hades' relationship to Orpheus whereas Patrick played more into his relationship with Eurydice, which makes so much sense what with Tom's Hades being a pettier more egotistical messy bitch obsessed with his kingdom and Patrick's Hades' obsession being his wife and Hadestown being like, this side-effect of being a god that he just couldn't help, he Had to build and strive for power whereas Tom's Hades reveled in it and wanted it. Instinct versus drive I guess. one of my buds put it super well as: "Patrick!Hades sees everything as a threat to his power Tom!Hades is so certain of his power that he can afford to be somewhat nonchalant but the fact that Orpheus alone is his main genuine threat is fucking brilliant"

be warned im about to talk a FUCK TON, specifically about the raven cycle. this post will very much need a "readmore" to keep it from clogging dashes

ANYWAY

the raven cycle is a YA urban fantasy quartet by maggie stiefvater published between 2012 and 2016, which also has a spinoff series "the dreamer trilogy" but ive only read the first Dreamer so far; i have a signed copy of the 2nd and am mildly worried ill ruin it. i first read TRC last year in july and am actually currently doing my 3rd read (via audiobook this time). So what is it about, you ask??? WELL

TRC stars 5 teenagers--Adam Parish, Ronan Lynch, Richard Gansey, Blue Sargent, and Noah Czerny. the boys meet blue at a restaurant and somehow drag her into their "quest"--find the body of Owen Glendower in the hills of virginia and wake him up. They want to do this because when gansey was 10 he died via wasp stings and was brought back to life with the voice of glendower talking to him and now he's OBSESSED with finding glendower. Along the way we find out Blue is gonna kill her true love, and that guy probably is gansey (who only has a year to live).

u may be thinking, 'alright, cool plot, but why special interest-worthy?" and i shall gently yell BECAUSE ITS THE BEST WRITING AND CHARACTERIZATION IVE EVER COME ACROSS

Maggie stiefvater knows how to make the best characters, like, ever, because she doesnt do the typical YA thing of "oh uwu here are their flaws: theyre too nice, too sweet, too naive". she's got shit like "purposely failing school" & "stupid about money and insensitive to friends about it" and "refuses to ask for help" and "drinks to cope", y'know, things that are actually flaws to overcome.

they've also all got amazing little traits just-to-them; blue really likes trees, layers her clothing, loves yogurt, is the only non-psychic in a family of them, & shreds her shirts to make them look more interesting. Ronan races cars, knows how to farm, LOVES his little pet bird (named Chainsaw btw), and grapples with being religious (catholic) vs being gay. Noah is quiet and "smudgy" and doesn't eat enough (because he doesnt. actually. have a stomach or like an actual brain really thats another thing tho). Gansey loves his journal and is terrified of wasps and eats avacado on his pizza and is really good at finding things. Adam wears a coca-cola shirt and is super focused around money (bc he Has None) and lives above a church and helps ronan do stupid shit. like, this is the stuff i thought of within 30 seconds for each character, and most of that alone is in the 1st book. like, it gets even more thorough as it goes on.

and the WRITING. i know exactly what the inside of gansey's car looks like and it wasnt boring to learn that. like, i still remember that stiefvater described that there's CDs in the backseat and beef jerky thats long expired and too many receipts. I remember 300 fox way (blue's house) doesnt have a single man living there and that there's a sewing-phone-cat room. I remember monmouth (gansey's house) was a factory but it's unknown what it produced but there's scorch marks on the walls and really high ceilings. I know blue adores the stars and trees and i know persephone (blue's mother's friend) listens to angry PHD music. Like, this was all peppered in casually but written in such a gripping way that its lodged in my brain. i was never once bored reading TRC, and ive gotten bored reading almost every other book, even the ones i love.

and the MAGIC is so cool, there's psychics and trees that speak (but only in latin!) and dragons made of fire that came out of people's heads and demon bugs and weird sticky stuff that tears apart the world. it's not all explained, and i love that, because it's explained enough that i'm satisfied but i don't somehow know more than all the characters combined.

... anyway i realize ive practically written an essay, and also i have to do my nano shit now cause theres not a ton of hours left in the day, but!!! soul is doing the smiley emote!! because raven cycle!!

hades is getting the best doctors and healers to help her immediately (beelzebub is one of them and he's gonna keep a close eye on him especially lol). he's been through this before with persephone, so he's calm and doing his best to comfort percy

poseidon is turning atlantis upside down. he's snapping at everyone, killing healers for being "useless", and causing natural disasters everywhere. it doesn't help that all he could focus on are his daughter's screams of pain. expect several countries to be wiped off the map

apollo knows exactly what to do! he helps percy give birth, probably calls artemis and leto to assist to but he doesn't really need their help as much (god of healing after all). this birth will be the smoothest compared to the rest because apollo's gonna heal her so well afterwards that she's in tip top shape the next day!

beelzebub is also someone who knows what to do. in fact, he already prepared for this and read 100000x books to prepare for this very moment.... except he's panicking a little. for the first time ever, he's freaking out (but tries his best to hide it). you can't blame him, it's his first time ever doing this AND percy's giving birth to his child. ofc he'd get a little emotional, but the birth goes smoothly and their baby is perfectly fine 💖

loki has actually given birth before so he knows exactly what its like 😂 he still calls for help tho cuz he's not a healer or a doctor. throughout the birth process, he's making jokes like "oh calm on, i gave birth to a horse, a lil baby is nothing!". she's gonna beat his ass after this.

first Lore Olympus is a webtoon & a retelling of the Persephone & Hades myth, I started reading it when it was still rather new but dropped it when I dropped like webtoons, manga & manhwa entirely [back on them now tho], it took a deep dive since I left but people are still enjoying it, it just has the classic retelling tropes [evil Demeter, Sad boy Hades, I can fix him Persephone]. The art is great tho, also this is the video I was talking about

ANYWAY

For my own personal retelling of Hades & Persephone I was inspired by "Pomegranate Lips" by Derivakat [really cool artist you should check them out].

Also this is NOT Hades friendly in the slightest.

The premise of the retelling is that Hades wanted a wife like his brothers & decided that he would marry Kore [Persephone's name before she was married]. He asked Gaea & Zeus [being Kore's dad] for help & Gaea lured Kore away from her nymph friends & Hades kidnaps her. That's all pretty much canon depending on who you ask

In my retelling it would be more emphasis on how young Kore is [around 14-16 here] & how much of creep Hades is, for one kidnapping a child to be his bride & the fact that child is his niece.

So Kore is struggling in the Underworld terrified of what will happen to her & desperately trying to escape. Hades locks her up for a bit to break her spirit. But she ends up finding solace in Thanatos who's the only person able to reach her, because every plant she grows dies & that summons him.

Everything up top goes as usual, Demeter looks for her kid with Hecate & Helios, finds out what happens & goes on strike. Zeus finally sends Hermes to go get Kore.

But before they can leave Hades makes her eat the three pomegranate seeds.

Now this is where stuff starts to deviate & I'm gonna use bullet points to slow myself down.

This is one of my more dark & grim stories so how do I say this, the marriage is consummated & Kore is not okay with any of it [didn't know how else to put it, yes it is horrifying & Hades will get what's coming to him]

Kore gets to go home after though

Kore & Demeter spend the first month just glad to be reunited then they realize Kore is going to have to return & they come up with a plan

Kore will have to get her own people in the Underworld to stay safe

Hecate ends up being the main helper, b/c she's a chthonic[underworld] god

So Kore's first year in the underworld is focused on her coronation as queen

It's a whole thing & all the gods are down in the Underworld for like basically the first time since Hades' own coronation

When it's time for her to be renamed [as is a tradition I just made the fuck up] the oracle isn't able to define it & decides that Kore will not be renamed or crowned until her name can be defined

So Kore has some time before the full brunt of the Underworld is thrust upon her

Hades is furious with this & forces Kore to immediately start doing a bunch of trials to figure out her name

Thanatos & Hecate are both terrified for her but can't do anything as Hades is their king

Demeter makes the Fall & Winter worse as a result

Kore does eventually go home as is tradition

And when she gets back she is determined that when she inevitably has to go back she'll destroy Hades

Que multiple years of Kore gathering allies in the Underworld [The shades/ghosts, Thanatos' siblings, Hermes, a couple other minor chthonic gods]

Along with her getting a training arc through the quests & challenges [all held in the underworld & some in tartarus as to make her connect to them]

Then when she when she's like mature/physically 17 [god years are weird] she starts looking for a way to actually Kill Hades instead of just getting to his level

She than challenges Hades himself disguising it as a way to earn her name

It goes on for awhile as Kore learns & analyses the way he fights

Thanatos felt that ever terrifying pull on his being of his need to take a godly soul. The feeling had been persistent since Kore had started challenging King Hades.

The god looked towards Hecate & grimaced, the goddess immediately understood his face. Hecate followed Thanatos as he was pulled by that feeling. Once the fight ended with Kore seconds from death Hecate would be able to heal her, he never liked how Hades left her.

Then there was a sharp pain of urgency within him & Thanatos knew instinctually that if he did not hurry someone was going to die.

Quicker than shadow he flew down the hall Hecate at his wings. The god of death felt tears prickles his eyes. He should have done something sooner, he should have talked Kore out of challenging the King. He should have saved the girl from this torture the first time she accidentally summoned. But he'd been a coward & now the poor child would die because of it.

As they got closer to the battle the palace walls shook with each blow the two gods threw at each other. It was coming from the throne room, it had been awhile since they fought in the throne room.

Thanatos burst through the doors as he felt the string of a life be cut.

Tears blurring his vision Thanatos stared at the battle ground that was the once glorious throne room.

At the center, was Kore & she stood over the still bleeding body of the once King of the Underworld Hades. Ichor on her hands & face, bruises & wounds littering her body. Her heel dug into Hades' throat, keeping the neck wound open.

"Thanatos"

The god looked to the goddess.

"Could you please clean this up"

"Of course my lady"

Kore stepped away from the body & stumbled to the high throne. Hecate went to support her but Kore just lightly pushed her away.

The two elder gods watched as the fertility goddess climbed up the stairs, & then sat down on the single throne.

She sighed, a deep & tortured sigh, then she started to cry.

"It's done, it's finally done," for the first time in the land of the dead Kore smiled.

The Last Olympian Thoughts

So because I have absolutely 0 self-control or restraint when it comes to this series and its characters, and for The Last Olympian in particular, I could not put TLO down. Because of this I figured I couldn’t do the usual photo reaction posts I have been so far, because the spam would just be ridiculous, so I am stealing the idea from @yourstrulytaaay​ to do a masterpost instead. (Adding a Read More cause this got ridiculously long)

Fun fact, TLO came out right after i finished reading the series for the first time so it's the first PJO book i bought  and my only hard cover one for the og series. I checked the year and turns out it was published 2009, which means i was actually 9 when i read the series for the first time. I realize this is not really a fun fact but i thought i was older when I first read the series so it's blowing my mind a little ‘cause now I’m 21 and everything hits different and i still have so much love for this series and the characters Okay onto book thoughts: - i was right that this book is gonna destroy me, the first line alone made me so excited and nostalgic it's ridiculous - I love Rachel and Percy sm tbh. Her being a bit of peace and normalcy in his life without always reminding Percy of who and what he is is so good for him. Just a little escape

- of course by the end of the book that's not the case any more but by the end he's lived his prophecy so he doesn't need it as badly, plus he and Annabeth are solid again - Percy saying Annabeth has been hard to be around lately... Ouch my heart. Luke really is the last thing that keeps them from being together and Percy is so jealous and Annabeth so torn and in pain, i feel so bad for them both

- Beckendorf 🥺🥺 - the telkhine with the Lil Demon lunchbox!! I forgot about him. Percy: 'i left him alive, partly because his lunchbox was cool' is one of my absolute favourite lines tbh - Paul taking Percy crabbing and being imperative in helping Percy kill the giant crab 💖 Paul Blofis is important and deserves the world, okay? - aw Percy, you can't save every demigod bb

- 'i had to fight him eventually. Why not now?... What difference would a week make?' Oh Percy you have no idea - real talk tho, the fact Kronos possessed Luke's body would also mess me tf up. Percy keeps forgetting it's not Luke anymore and yeah, that would be so so hard and confusing af, like what another smart little mind game for Kronos to pull on top of everything else - the fact Percy fights Kronos before getting the Achilles Curse and actually doesn't die within seconds is... Astounding. He kicks him in the chest! And yeah Kronos is weaker and still adjusting to Luke's body, but Percy is having trouble fighting Luke cause they used to be friends - Percy breaks Kronos' time magic!! Like?! Boy is POWERFUL.

- OUCH - honestly Luke, Thalia and Annabeth's family breaking the way it did... Don't talk to me. Poor Annabeth, Luke betrayed them, Thalia joined the Hunters because of Luke's betrayal so she's pretty much AWOL all the time and then Luke dies. Like Rick wtf, my heart can't take it? -Percy and Tyson having each others backs when talking to Poseidon in the underwater palace is the brother-brother relationship we love to see - Percy trying to stick a sand dollar in the vending machines at school 🤦🏻‍♀🤦🏻‍♀ - the whole underwater interaction at Poseidon's palace? Perfection. Awkward family drama and all - Connor falling out of the tree when he sees Percy because he's so excited 😂😂

- k, ik Clarisse isn't perfect but tbh if i was a child of Ares whose father was disrespected and hated by my fellow campers (ares deserves it but still) and that disrespect trickled down to how the other campers treated ME (which if Percy is reliable here, it obviously does) then i would also be irritated at being used for muscle and nothing else? And just expected to fight with the people who act as if they'd rather not have Ares kids around the rest of the time. Like Clarisse isn't totally wrong - Percy reading the prophecy, seeing he's meant to die and just being like 'i do not see it' and refusing to outright think about it makes me so sad for him - (but it taints every action after and he's super reckless afterwards bc of it- including finally breaking and accepting the Achilles Curse) - (also him taking this as the last straw and finally beginning to show Annabeth how he really feels, cause fuck it, he's dying anyway) - Give me more info about Rachel's backstory and family Rick!! -  how did i forget Percy willingly eats chocolates that taste like cardboard because 'i didnt have anything against cardboard' like sir? Ik Silena didn't want them but still? - 'she'd always been cute, but she was starting to be seriously beautiful' STOP, MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT - Percy staring at Annabeth and forgetting what they're talking about cause hes so distracted 👌🏻

- hmm yeah... For some strange reason.... - i forgot how Percy totally bombs this convo bw them and now want to cry 😭 Annabeth is trying to talk about what's important and Percy, you sweet oblivious man, you're shooting her down without even realizing - love that they're both on the same wavelength tho. Percy two lines before, hmm it's cool to date ppl from other cabins, wonder why im thinking that around Annabeth, my best friend in the world, and then Annabeth a beat later, hmm, let me bring up Silena and Beckendorf and how it's important to be with the people you love when you have the chance, no way Percy will miss this huge hint right? - they're the best - k i honestly forgot Percy full on physically intimidates Leneus like that - luke telling his mom if he ran away the monsters wouldnt get her..i can just imagine luke crying when he says good bye before running away because he thinks it's his fault his mom is like that and he cant take care of and protect her anymore because it's too hard - uh oh now i have angsty pre-lightning thief luke fic inspo... Him, Thalia and Annabeth on the run... The ANGST -  Rick holds absolutely nothing back in this book and i am in pain - HESTIA!! 💖💖🥰 - actual loml - i love that Rick titled this book after her and that he wrote such a great series about the importance of family (biological, found or otherwise) and home, and that he said actually Hestia is the most important bc shes the most humble and keeps the peace and knows when to fight and when to yield and you protect what you love, which is your home - i just... Adore Hestia - Grover! Missed you babes - Hades is so so horrible to Nico, always comparing him to Bianca :/ - but i do love Hades, Persephone and Demeter together they make me laugh - oh god the River Styx - Achilles 🥺 - Annabeth being Percy's lifeline is, and continues to be, A Lot™ - 'my name was Percy Jackson. I reached up and took Annabeth's hand.' LOL Why am i crying? - Like the fact there is no Percy without Annabeth, and that remembering her literally reminded him of who he is in his very soul... It's fine im fine - i won't even get into the parallels of her being his lifeline now and then later when Hera takes his memories but leaves the memory of Annabeth for Percy to fight to get back to (anyone who wants to yell about it with me... Feel free to message) - badass Percy is my fav Percy tbh - him defeating Hades?? Like? Hades is arguably the most powerful god, okay - i feel bad for Nico but if i was Percy I'd do the exact same, Nico, sorry man but this is a high stakes time crunch deal and Nico is literally the only hope of persuading Hades and distracted by his own internal stuff - flashbacks to Luke, Thalia and Annabeth hurt, ow - George and Martha are the best - damn i forgot Hermes full on nearly kills Percy here, yikes - Luke stop cockblocking Percabeth challenge

- i love!! Percy's love for New York!! So much!! - Percy leaving to live in New Rome in HoO is a lie and this is all the proof i need for why - the fact the entire last half of the book is the battle and aftermath... Such great buildup and pacing. All the tricks and twists and battles in this War of Manhattan? I would not take out a thing, Rick, you legend - of course then the final battle in hoo with the gods is what? Two pages? Ugh, don’t talk to me about my hatred for BoO and HoO - 'no detours you two' is still the cutest thing!!! - THE HUNTERS!! Thalia i missed you - good job Percy, you finally spent your sand dollar - Minotaur!! - 'dont i get a kiss for luck? Its kind of a tradition right?' Percy finds out he's gonna die and is out of fucks to give and honestly I support him - also Michael just standing beside these two while they're flirting like umm 👀 👀 while a monster army marches towards them, nbd - Annabeth taking Ethan's knife meant for Percy!!! Cause she just knows his weak spot without him even telling her! They literally invented love - Feral Percy is so scary omg, i love how well Rick incorporates the Achilles Curse in this novel, with the whole heightened weaknesses and stuff ans the parallels to Achilles arrogance being what killed him and Percy's loyalty, fierceness and protective instinct being his own heightened weakness - the fact that Percy is the one who inadvertantly kills Michael Yew tho, I'll never recover from that - the fact Hades offers Maria di Angelo a golden palace by the Styx like how Poseidon offers Sally a palace under the sea tho. Let's talk about that parallel - the entire talk with Prometheus is so so good - not me picturing young Luke hiding in the closet to get away from his mom when she has an 'episode' -i love callbacks in stories and all of the callbacks to the rest of the series in this book make me very happy (medusa, minotaur, the underworld, Rainbow!! My baby!!, Daedalus and more) - Percy summoning a wholeass hurricane against Hyperion - the Party Ponies! They're so chaotic, i love it - Dionysus! 😁 I can't help it, i love him - Percy absolutely losing it when he sees Sally and Paul asleep in the car 🥺 - Rachel telling Percy he's not the hero screws with him so much :( poor bb - although i really really love how Rick wrote this, it's so refreshing to not have one chosen one save the world, but a combination of people - the drakon, Silena and Clarisse make me cry - the Patrochilles references, im not okay - Annabeth giving up on Luke after hearing what he did to Silena and Percy telling her that doesn't make him happy 😭 that whole interaction makes my heart ache - Percy giving Hestia Pandora's pithos 🥺 - and Hades, Nico and the others coming for a final attack is so badass, i love it - listen im glad the og trio were the ones to confront Luke on Olympus but the fact Thalia got so close and then pinned by a statue of HERA makes me so sad. Ik her and Luke were finished and she coped by cutting him off completely and giving up all hope but i would pay money to know what they would have said to each other to say goodbye - Ethan 🥺 - Poseidon joining the fight against Typhon is so cool, such a great scene - 'PEANUT BUTTER!' - Annabeth you brilliant badass you - RIP Luke, you werent great but you werent the worst either - the gods just rolling up seconds too late, wondering wtf happened in Olympus and who the dead body is - the chapter where the Olympians meet and give out rewards is one of my absolute favourites (again i am incensed we didn't get anything like this in HoO) - will Percy turning down immortality ever not make me scream in glee? No? Alright then - Annabeth being relieved like Percy was relieved at the end of Titan's Curse tho - oh Hermes :/ - its so hard reading all this and knowing what comes in HoO... Like it's such a cathartic, earned and mostly happy and peaceful ending and then HoO comes along and undermines it all - aww Rick let Paul see Olympus somehow pls, he deserves it, he killed a dracanae - (i would also love to see it) - Percy being more upset Rachel took his pegasus than her going to Camp and possibly dying, lol, priorities dude - i honestly think that Rick had other ideas for the second Great Prophecy and how things would go down in BoO, cause the prophecy like... Barely applies to BoO, Doors of Death are in book four, and explabations of it is all so unclear when Rick is usually pretty good with that stuff - PERCABETH - lol Percy complaining about privacy when he and Annabeth are caught kissing literally in the middle of the very open and public dining pavilion, okay - BEST UNDERWATER KISS OF ALL TIME - that's it and im a glass case of emotion - very happy to say that this series remains my favourite of all time 💖
