DARNING- inspired by celia pym i decided to darn an old pair of socks that i wear alot. The idea of Pyms “visible mending” is to darn using a contrasting colour to show the unique areas of wear in each garment. I chose to use a bright orange as it contrasts the original colour but still fits the warm feel of the socks. I found the darning relatively easy, even though i didnt have a proper darning mushroom or do it in the “proper” technique but instead how i was taught to by my grandmother. Overall i really like this effect and the idea of persanolity showing theough clothing and textiles through subconscious marks. Im unsure how i would incorporate this into a new garment, but i may experiment by taking new fabric and distressing it.

Rant re: mental illness / the commodification and suppression of suffering:

Wether or not mental illness—as a concept and as a (supposedly) concrete set of behaviours that incapacitate and individuals ability to mentally and socially function—should be regarded as inherent to a person's biology/personality or a separate disease that's overcome the host is insignificant to me now.

I.e "I am my mental illness so don't insult my symptoms which are an extension of me" v "you are not your mental illness, so separate the Real You from your symptoms and kill the rest "

Both arguments disregard the social to fixate on individual, in a rather victim-blamey sort of way that absolves the psychiatric institution itself from blame and more importantly continues to essentialise human behaviour into a rigid set of genes etc. (which technically speaking is never far from eugenics and the like). Not to mention it's a wholly simplistic view of the ever changing ephemeral phenomena that is "personality"

This fixation on mental illness as a literal, tangible illness is counterproductive, dehumanising and largely only serves to benefit pharmaceutical companies, the people who benefit from pathologising/criminalising counter cultural behaviours, ad nauseam

Instead I think we should view mental illness as a representation of an individual's expression of suffering, how they do and do not understand their world (especially with respect to the ways in which they do correctly understand the world) and the flawed coping mechanisms they've developed that largely isolate themselves from society. They exist long enough to be intergrated into personality, into a human being yet persanolity itself is not concrete. People are fluid and neuroplasticity can exist (relatively speaking) throughout a person's life. These are maladaptive behaviours, as a result of suffering, that have an internal logic to them within the context of a person's life, within the context of society at large. With the recontextualisation of ones relationship to society and society's relationship to individuals, said maladaptive behaviours can be overcome.

Ie rejecting the bio-psych model for the socio-bio (but largely socio) psych model

Yet greed and an inherent western, individualistic suspicion of all human beings and psychiatrys refusal to grant their patients agency continue. Anything otherwise would take work and undermine capitalism so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
