Halfway to Go! The 3 Best Books I’ve Read in 2022

Let’s get to the point:

3. People from My Neighbourhood - Hiromi Kawakami

Jarang-jarang saya mau membaca buku beraliran fantasi dan suka dengan dunia di dalamnya, tapi sampul dan judul People from My Neighbourhood terlalu cantik untuk dilewati begitu saja. Saya biasa tertarik dengan isu tempat dan kehidupan bertetangga. Judul tersebut representatif, kan? Walau mengarah ke horor, saya tetap bisa mengikuti dunia dan ceritanya. Cara penulis membangun neighbourhood itu lumayan sederhana karena tiap bab berupa cerita tentang satu orang yang tinggal di sekitar orang pertama, dan antar karakter (yang berarti antar bab) punya relasi yang lumayan aneh. Berhubung ini adalah buku Jepang kesekian yang pernah saya baca, ada satu pengalaman menarik yang bisa saya simpulkan; entah mengapa buku-buku dari penulis asal Jepang—sekalipun fantasi—lebih mudah dibaca daripada penulis asal negara lainnya, terutama Korea Selatan.

2. Homeless - Liyana Dhamirah

Kesan pertama buku Homeless memang perih; bagaimana bisa ibu hamil tinggal di tenda kemah akibat tidak mampu menyewa hunian di Singapura yang notabenenya maju? Terlebih negara ini dibayang-bayangi oleh citra film Crazy Rich Asian. Autobiografi ini berhasil membuka perspektif baru karena di balik deretan high-rise buildings dan sistem perumahan HDB yang diunggulkan, isu tunawisma seperti ini masih ada. Bahkan yang membuat buku ini lebih pedih lagi adalah, tertulis juga cerita soal bagaimana Liyana tetap menjalani hidup walau pernah jadi korban kekerasan seksual, diselingkuhi, harus mengurus 3 anak dengan kondisi finansial yang mencekik, sampai diusir oleh mertua beliau di hari lebaran.

1. The Storyteller - Dave Grohl

Setiap ada teman yang bertanya rekomendasi buku di tahun ini, saya selalu jawab “Dave Grohl’s memoir!” tanpa pikir panjang. Berkat latar belakangnya yang punya jalan hidup menarik dan bukan seorang penulis profesional, isi buku ini sama sekali tidak berpretensi. Ia mampu melepas stereotip maskulinitas seorang rock star— pernah menangis saat melihat anaknya disuntik, punya boneka Barbie versi Joan Jett, serta rela pulang dari Australia ke Amerika Serikat selama 2 hari di tengah tur demi menemani anaknya berdansa di acara sekolah. Dave Grohl adalah bapak dari 3 anak perempuan, dan saya berani bilang ia adalah salah satu figur bapak terbaik yang pernah saya tahu. Tiap calon bapak perlu membaca buku ini. Selain keluarga, tentu ia banyak menulis soal karirnya di Nirvana dan Foo Fighters. Kabar kematian Taylor Hawkins jadi jauh lebih perih setelah saya membaca buku ini, mengingat Dave Grohl selalu berteman baik dengan tiap personil. The Storyteller benar-benar impresif.

The Archer - Paulo Coelho

Buku pertama yang saya baca di tahun 2022 adalah The Archer. Karya-karya Paulo Coelho sudah pasti memukau, tapi kalau masuk ke daftar 3 buku terbaik di atas nanti hasilnya monoton. Lagi-lagi buku dari beliau menjadi salah satu pedoman dalam keseharian saya.

The Joy of Small Things - Hannah Jane Parkinson

Isi buku ini sederhana, persis dengan judulnya. Tapi konsep tulisan tentang bahagia dengan hal-hal kecil sangatlah inspiratif, karena pun saya mampu merasakan kebahagiaan kecil semacam itu, saya tidak pernah berpikir untuk menyusunnya jadi satu esai panjang, apalagi buku.

Juli ini saya buka dengan salah satu nominasi Booker Prize 2022. Setelah membaca 5 cerpen pertama, saya terlalu takjub sampai tidak mau melahapnya dalam sekali baca. Belum pernah saya membaca tulisan serupa dari penulis lokal, baik dari gaya maupun nilai yang diangkat. Kemungkinan besar Cerita-cerita Bahagia, Hampir Seluruhnya masuk ke daftar buku terbaik versi saya tahun ini.

Khusus dalam konteks buku, saya tidak sabar menunggu bulan November nanti karena Matthew Perry akan merilis autobiografi. Peran dia di serial Friends, Chandler Bing, adalah karakter favorit saya walau di season 3-6 ia berada di bawah pengaruh adiksi alkohol dan narkoba sampai ingatannya kabur. Tapi kabar tersebut selalu datang dari media hiburan, sehingga saya ingin melihat dari sudut pandang Matthew Perry sendiri.

Tepatnya di hari Kamis tanggal 7 Juli, seorang teman mengulas buku ini karena sudah saya minta dari bulan lalu. Ia tidak bicara kesimpulannya, tapi mengutip kata-kata Romo Mangun yang amat bijak. Judul bab pertama saja sudah mencuri perhatian— Di Tengah Sekian Miliar Dunia Diam. Sebisa mungkin saya harus baca buku ini di tahun 2022.

Hermansen: We’ve compared working with a band to flying — it’s the difference between a 747 Jumbo Jet and flying two fighter jets, which is what we were used to. When you’re working with a band of Coldplay’s magnitude, with four different individuals, it’s a totally different process. Chris Martin actually asked us very early on, “Are you guys in it for the long haul?” And it was a long haul, but it was also one of the most rewarding things we’ve been a part of.

Eriksen: It was very refreshing to do something in a different genre. The guys are so talented, and Chris’s songwriting is on another level. The way we worked was pretty interesting, too, because we’d always have two rooms running at the same time. [Lead guitarist] Jonny [Buckland] would put down a guitar idea in one studio while we worked on the beat in another, and then we would switch and go back and forth.

Hermansen: When they performed the song at the Super Bowl [in 2016], it was fun, but it was also like, Wow, this is really where dreams come true. It really did for us. To come to America as immigrants because of our love of American music, and then to not just make it, but to see our music performed on the biggest stage of American culture? It’s really rewarding on a deep, deep level.

'Future Spurs skipper', 'Similar to Modric' - These Tottenham fans drool over thriving talent

Tottenham Hotspur recorded a huge victory 3-1 against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon to stay within touching distance of pace-setters Manchester City and Liverpool.

Spurs were far from their vintage best but they showed enough bottle to record three priceless points against the travelling Foxes courtesy of goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min.

Mauricio Pochettino opted to field Oliver Skipp alongside Harry Winks in midfield, and the latter continued to justify his rapidly growing reputation with an accomplished performance in the centre of the park.

It was the type of performance which Skipp should be using as a benchmark for the future, as the England international’s composure, precise vision and relentless work-rate provided a solid foundation for victory.

Recent exposure to regular first-team opportunities has enabled Winks to blossom this season and justify the hype which has surrounded his development ever since his excellent performance against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on October 17, 2017.

And his latest showing on Sunday has prompted some supporters on Twitter to compare the 23-year-old to both Steve Perryman and Luka Modric, and those compliments serve to illuminate how highly regarded he is in north London right now.

Now im not saying he's anywhere near the same level but Harry Winks' style of play is similar to Modric. The way he keeps the ball moving, always looking for his wide men, ability to drive with the ball from midfield. Some work on his longer passing and goal contribution needed

Tiësto ft. Stargate & Aloe Blacc – Carry You Home

Aloe Blacc does it again, except this time, with another EDM superstar, Tiësto. A new addition to the rBeatzRadio lineup is Carry You Home produced by Tiësto and featuring Stargate & Aloe Blacc. You might remember Aloe Blacc from his massive hit with Avicii, Wake Me Up, which charted in the #1 spot in 22 countries! That’s crazy! Aloe Blacc’s is considered a soul and funk vocalist, but when he’s giving a country electronic platform, his vocals get so wide and big. You might have also heard of Aloe Blacc’s I Need A Dollar, which reached 1 million in sales in 2013. He had a much more soulful vocal in this one, and this track was suppose to be more subdued than the anthem Tiësto and Avicii created with his voice.

Tiësto recently reached the #5 slot on DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs. He’s been in the top 5 since 2004 (and probably before that as well), only taking the top spot in 2004. Tiësto is probably the longest running most successful DJ of all time.

Stargate is a Norwegian production duo comprised of Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen. They have produced for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Coldplay, P!NK, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Lionel Richie and many many more. They broke out in 2006 with the release of So Sick co-written and performed by Ne-Yo.
