so i finally watched the devil's chord and i. AUGH!!!! UEUHGH!!!!!!! i watched space babies a couple days ago and it was good ofc but i felt like it was missing something but devil's chord was literally fucking PERFECT. it was scary and emotional and silly and weird all at the same time and i almost cried and i got so many goosebumps and i just AAHH!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE EP UNDER THE CUT. GIANT RANT. I AM AUTISM.
i already have a giant bias towards the episode cuz one of my longest interests has been music and instruments but oh my fucking GOD the way they talked about music and hearing classical songs that i knew almost sent me to tears IM NOT JOKING. ruby playing the piano was so awesome and hearing saint saen's danse macabre made me feel like i was going to ascend into the heavens. putting doctor who and classical music, two of my biggest interests, together, was the best thing imaginable. I LITERALLY CANT DESCRIBE HOW HAPPY THIS EPISODE MAKES ME.
SECONDLY, I LOVED MAESTRO. like the toymaker (who i also adore so SO incredibly much), they have this silly evilness to them that makes them so INTERESTING!!! and then finding out maestro is the child of the toymaker was EVERYTHING. BECAUSE IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. jinkx monsoon, the person that plays maestro, says some stuff about them that explains why i love them so much. "When human rules don't apply to you, you get to do whatever you want. You don't have to worry about whether your emotions make sense to people because you don't have to answer to them." and "What I love about Maestro is that, while objectively evil, they are an artist, they have a mission statement. " THESE ARE THE EXACT REASONS I LOVE THE TOYMAKER AND MAESTRO SO MUCH. both of them are other-worldly beings. they're gods of their own realms. they're dramatic and passionate and so dead-set on getting what they want. but its not just about getting what they want, its about having fun with it and turning it into a show. because what's the point in going out if you cant go out with a BANG?
something else i loved was the doctor in this episode. ncuti gatwa's doctor, like david tennant's, is so extremely emotional and passionate and it makes me want to SOB. the doctor mentioning his granddaughter? TEARS IN MY EYES. "i can only smile like this because ive lost so much" SOBBING ON THE FLOOR. the 15th doctor has already been so emotional and i know im gonna cry so so much while he's around. BUT THATS SOMETHING I LOVE ABOUT DOCTOR WHO. because it can be so silly and weird and funny and then it can turn around and be spine-chilling and emotional ALL IN THE SAME EPISODE. because when you think about it, the story of the doctor is HEARTBREAKING. and when that side of him comes out you HAVE to expect the waterworks.
AND THEN RUBY THE ENTIRE EPISODE ???? i know theres something up with her and i just OH MY GOD!!! BECAUSE THE SNOW??? THIS EPISODE AND LAST EPISODE? AND THE SOUND OF CHRISTMAS?????? im gnawing on the bars of my enclosure I NEED TO KNOW. shes so interesting I CANT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT because its like who's her mom?? whys she able to do the snow thing?? how did she have a song in her ????? AND MAESTRO SAYING THINGS LIKE "no he couldnt be there" "the old one couldn't've been there" WHO IS THAT. WHAT DO YOU MEAN.
IM GOING INSANE. IM SO EXCITED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT I COULD EXPLODE INTO A MILLION PIECES.

10 RuPaul's Drag Queens who deserve the crown by Seigar.
There is no doubt anymore that drag queens have become the new pop icons. Their faces are on the cover of all magazines, and their self-expressing underground personalities have brought the spirit of the old rock and punk stars back to the mainstream. This list shows ten drag queens that I think deserve the crown.
Tumblr media
1. Valentina is the embodiment of a beauty pageant. Her charisma and stylish sense have engaged all her fans into an absolute adoration and devotion towards her persona. Living her fantasy in her head possibly also brings some attractiveness to her. Hitchcock said: "The MacGuffin is the object around which the plot revolves". Her iconic mask moment is ironically the MacGuffin of the current situation we are living these days: "I'd like to keep it on, please".

2. Roxxxy Andrews is the representation of the Latin diva, of Puerto Rican and Cuban-American ancestry, her slogan: thick and juicy made it to the top three in Season 5. Her controversial personality didn't help her to get the crown, but nobody can't deny her power on stage, her pageant beauty, and her faithful commitment to her drag persona. Her drag is genuine and with deeply felt emotions conveyed through a thrilling and strong character. Her lipsynch assassin moment in All Stars 5 put her back in the position that she deserves. "Roxxxy, you are a winner baby".

3. Jujubee is the most constant queen ever! If someone deserves the crown is her! "Justice for Jujubee" should be a pop cause to vindicate. Being not once, not twice BUT THRICE in the top three: Season 2, All-Stars 1, and All-Stars 5, she deserves her crown, what part you don't understand?. Her freshness and spontaneity are her strengths. Can you imagine fighting so hard to be crowned three times, not to get it, and leaving with a beautiful smile on your face anyway and willing to come back and to do it again? You should be so proud Jujubee, my eternal love for you. Go and listen to her song "Don't wanna love" because you know what? the girl can also sing, her EPs are lovely and evoke a lonely pop diva in a small bar, a voice full of emotional power to sustain her myth. Long live The Queen.

4. Alyssa Edwards is the perfect balance between the comedy and the beauty queen. Alysa has simultaneously mastered both types of drags to become one of the most omnipotent queens from RuPaul's Drag Race. She is so recognizable and unique that all the other queens can imitate her faces! Face, face, face. Her heroic lipsynchs are also among the best moments of the program. Alyssa has defied the maxim that one should either be a comedy or a beauty queen. Alyssa Edwards, baby, you are a winning material!

5. Manila Luzon is the representation of the loved queen. A diva that found her ways to get her people. I'm one of your fans Manila. I know you've got the potential and that you'd be surprisingly good for me. Manila is one of the most fascinating and charming personalities in the program. You can't just help it, you love her. Her instinctive moments serving face and body, her memorable readings of the other contestants, her attention to detail, and her risky concept of drag never afraid of being too campy made her one the most artistic and at the same time funniest drag queen ever!
Tumblr media
6. Vanessa Vanjie Mateo represents the personality queen. Her unique voice and her informal language are what we call a brand. Nowadays drag queens don't impersonate divas, they have become stars themselves. Vanjie is the clearest example. The well-connected Queen is also an example of a famous drag family. Her iconic Miss Vanjie moment was viral, #MissVanjie is now part of the Ru-story. About this, she told in an interview by Patrick Crowley for Billboard: "Fuck it. might as well have these bitches remember me." So I just started screaming at the top of my lungs "Miss Vanjie," over and over." Vanjie is all about magnetism, she can't imitate but herself. She even can thank herself! All about Miss Vanjie.

7. Eureka O'Hara is the drama queen. Eureka's always ready for some loud dramatization. When she's on stage like Damien Rice sings: "I can't take my eyes off you". She has proved also to be one of the most polished queens ever! Her makeup, hair, silhouette, and style are iconic! Adventurous in her fashion and characters' decisions, influential and proud, she can be simultaneously campy and modern. Impressively earnest Eureka is. Let's leave this clear, Tennessee Williams would have loved Eureka.
Tumblr media
The photo was taken from her Facebook Profile (selfie).
8. Crystal Methyd is the kookiest queen. Different, crazy, unique, eerie, and extravagant, she loves her intricate costumes and arty makeup. Her choices are ahead of her time, I sometimes feel no everyone is ready for a queen like her. Crystal is surprising and risky. Her "I'm like a bird" moment is iconic but undervalued. No even RuPaul seemed to be prepared for her crown. It's common knowledge that Crystal is one of a kind. One of her charms is her sweetness and kindness as a person. She reminded me of Jinkx Monsoon's persona in that sense, her innocent smiles, and the way she looks when interacting with the other girls and the judges made us love her. Crystal, you are adorable, and you made the world's confinement a better experience during the whole season. Thanks!

9. A'keria Chanel Davenport is one of the most beautiful pageant queens in RuPaul's Drag Race. All her runway looks are stunning, and her beauty queen's manners are just perfection! A'keria is absolutely flawless. She may be overlooked by hipsters, but you can't underestimate her polished aesthetic and her campy personality that make her an authentic threat. A'keria deserves her crown for providing the true link between the old and new pageants. Impeccable!

10. Detox Icunt is the future of drag. Detox is one of the most powerful and strongest contestants in RuPaul's Drag Race. With her alien face and body, pop culture knowledge, and glam oddity, Detox has proved to be a professional of drag. Her runaway looks have elevated the concept of drag to the category of art. If I had to choose her moment, it will be her legendary look for the Season 5 final. She knows how to cause a commotion. Detox, you are a masterpiece.
Special mentions to the charismatic punk legend Adore Delano and the sensational Miz Cracker.

MYCHAEL DANNA & JESSICA ROSE WEISS
Tumblr media
Rhoads, Rachael Yamagata, Chris Pierce y Garrison Starr. Actualmente está produciendo el próximo disco de la cantautora Lily Kershaw.

Birthday Crossroads
I just put this on my blog: https://keithcraker.wordpress.com It’s the latest post, so there’s no need to read this again if you read it there. If you’ve never read my blog, please do - I need the feedback.
..........
Years ago, I had a blog that was attached to my personal website. I wrote a bunch of stuff I was really proud of, I wrote some fluff I wasn’t so attached to… and then I wrote some stuff that I probably shouldn’t have written; stuff that was technically all about me, but included other people who would rather have those events not discussed so openly and certainly not so confessionally. After catching hell from folks irritated that their dirty laundry was being aired out, I dropped the blog, deleted it, and lost all the old posts. This made a bunch of folks happy, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth… because while they could complain about their dirty laundry, I wasn’t discussing them; I was discussing ME. I was talking about how those decisions they made influenced and changed my life, and if I was going to be honest with my story, I was going to need to include those people in the narrative. But… as it sometimes happens… honesty and artistic integrity get in the way of relationships. To keep those relationships in solid ground, I would need to promise not to discuss certain details of my life in public. So that blog died.
When I started my blog - the mission statement was very narrow: this narrative would be about me and my attempts to not be such a nerd and transform myself into a Rock Star; it would be about losing weight, learning instruments, and performing gigs. With parameters that specific and that tight, worrying about other people and their feelings should never have been a worry… so I didn’t worry. I just started writing.
It was a few months in that I found myself editing myself, not discussing certain matters. I have four other men in my cover band; most of them have significant others, some of them have exes, some of them have kids, and the band itself has a reputation to build and maintain. I do work with two different community theaters, full of troupes of actors and directors, one of which has a board of directors. My wife has aunts and uncles and cousins; I have aunts and uncles and cousins; we both have friends and those friends have family and friends. And even though I had chosen a very specific niche, because I was writing about my life, I still found myself needing to worry about other people’s feelings. As much as I want to be honest, I didn’t want a repeat of last time with its deletions and promises not to ever talk about certain folks and events for as long as I’m writing.
It’s been three months since I last blogged. I am finished with my first musical of the year, which, by all accounts, went great. The band had its first gig in eight months a couple of weeks a go, it went well – not perfect, but solid enough to make new fans. I’ve written four more songs, for a total of ten so far, technically enough for an album, but definitely enough for an EP. I am definitely in the summer musical, so much so I just started giving voice lessons to two of the actresses and hopefully growing the class with as many of the other cast members as possible.
And I haven’t written about any of that.
My experience with the Winter musical was great. Everyone said I did a good job, I enjoyed the director, I loved the cast, I made some new friends, and I may have opened up a new creative venue for myself. The experience of working in my home town vs working at my parents’ home town was different, though. Not bad… just different. I thought I would be writing about those differences, but I’ve found myself not wanting to… I don’t want my words to be misconstrued and somebody taking an observation as a criticism. I haven’t wanted to talk about the band’s process of getting back into working mode, afraid someone would misconstrue my words and think I’m complaining or criticizing. I don’t want to discuss my voice lessons, afraid one of my cast mates will get my meaning wrong, feel they’re being criticized. I haven’t discussed my songwriting process for fear I will annoy my band mates and musician buddies, or put them all out of sorts.
I haven’t been writing because I’m afraid if I express my opinion, I will hurt or upset somebody. Because I have hurt and upset people before.
I told someone a few nights ago that creating art is the act of ripping open your chest and exposing your heart; that making good art meant always riding that ragged edge of your emotions and risking losing control of them. And since this blog is about a portion of my life that touches other people, for the last three months I have not been taking that risk – I have been keeping my heart securely in my chest, and I have been keeping a very tight reign on my emotions.
Yet again, I now find myself at a crossroads when it comes to this blog. Yet again, I find myself at a loss as to how I’m supposed to create good art with artistic integrity and intellectual honesty while not creating unintentional hurt and needless drama. I am not happy about this particular turn of events. I will have to do some soul searching yet again, decide if I’m going to continue the blog, and, if I do, how I will proceed.
On a happier note, I did just spend a long weekend in the lovely and historic Louisville, Kentucky visiting ETGB’s Biggest Fan. Officially, this was my Birthday Gift to myself, but unofficially, it was the perfect opportunity to grab my mom and a couple of long-time close friends, and carpool up to see our Sister From Another Mister in her gorgeous hometown. Mom had a blast; all the old friends who hadn’t spent any real time together in years got a chance to bond over old memories, great food, and decadent food; and my Kentucky Bestie and I got a chance to be Besties, as opposed to having to settle for texts and a phone call once a week if schedules allow. The trip was worth the exhaustion, though I am very sorry the High School Sweetheart was on her driving shift when the monsoon started coming down. She did great, but I did finish out the trip home behind the wheel just in case the rain got that bad again. I’ve had two nights in a row of eight hours of sleep, so I am back to feeling like my old self once again.

LANDMARK by HIPPO CAMPUS [review]
LANDMARK is exactly what it claims to be. It is a turning point in the four-piece Hippo Campus’ career, a milestone in the lives of their most dedicated fans, but most importantly a “Landmark” in indie rock as a whole. Landmark embodies an impressively mature adolescent mindset, contrasting but not abandoning the juvenile spirit that carried their 2015 album Bashful Creatures. The change they have gone through within these two years is audible in each of the thirteen songs they offer (yes, including the two instrumental tracks).
We begin the album with an instrumental intro with heavy lo-fi tones, gritty vocals, casual muted dialogue and ambient noises. Sun Veins soon makes an unexpected transition into the following track, Way It Goes. Within this first eerie minute, we already know this album is going to be a huge shift from their last. Way It Goes, their most popular single release from this album, is the best example of their renovated musical style. Rolling guitar riffs, reminiscent of Mac DeMarco (This Old Dog out May 5th), guide the chorus to achieve an incredibly dreamy result. Frontman Jake Luppen’s raw and passionate vocals bring us back to his powerful performances in their earliest endeavors, before dropping off into wavering falsettos in the verses. The grooving bassline and vivacious, full drumming we know so well take a seat on this track, drawing the spotlight on Luppen’s fresh voice and matter-of-fact lyrics, as well as the hot and sweet guitar licks. The song takes a break for a muted slide-guitar solo, epitomizing the mood of the track as a whole. It begins its crescendo with light cymbal and staticky vocalization before coming together. At this point, you know the words, and you’re definitely singing along.
Boyish, the third-to-last song, mirrors the youthful maturity that Way It Goes introduces, but with a more inclusive production. Bass and drums join (possibly over-power) the rhythm and lead guitar, and are accompanied by a brass section. Upon its release in 2016, I listened immediately and was astonished by the shift in direction from their older work. Little did we know that it would be the perfect introduction to their new sound. Boyish was a statement for Hippo Campus’ listeners that “yeah, we did that.” It was a promise that production would be taken to a whole new level, that less trivial subjects would be tackled (from “peace, weed, cocaine, and mushrooms and shit” to “dropping hallucinogens”) and that Luppen was indeed capable of prolonged falsetto. Vacation joins Boyish and Way It Goes, as it exudes juvenescence while demonstrating the growth Hippo Campus underwent in their recently-abandoned teen years.
We exit lo-fi dream Way It Goes with a soft fade before entering Vines, a song that could very well fit on their 2015 South EP. Just as spry and bright as the closing track Buttercup, Vines is full of that teenager spirit. Vines’ “I get the feeling that I’ll never leave this house again” and chorus opening line “Nighttime in the basement, screaming about our feelings” alongside Buttercups’ infectious “I’ll be fine on my own, she said, I don’t need you inside my head” line are proof enough that the angst we know and love plagues (in a good way) these two songs.
There is no denying that Landmark is full of a boyish (...sorry) wonder, and Hippo Campus certainly don’t want you to forget it. There is a constant mention of youth in their lyrics. Take these examples from the album’s middle tracks:
“Sweet love, kiss on the eyelid, bruised up, chasing the sky. Did you say something about her? My legs brushed up beside her. Too young, looking for trouble. New god, lost in the struggle. One more night in the backyard. This simple season...” (Simple Season)
“Alcoholic tendencies underneath our fingertips. I think I love you, I think I know you. Or is it only the liquor speak? I want to love you, I wanna know you.” (Tuesday)
“I just love this, I swear I’ll go viral, from the ‘burbs to the streets now. It’s a revival, the spirit is found in the idealistically idle age of excess.” (Western Kids)
These giddy tracks ooze summer vibes and pure fun. From the childlike backup vocals in Simple Season to Tuesday’s happy-go-lucky atmosphere and Western Kids’ teenage arrogance, Hippo Campus show us that they are still youthful, they still have ambition, and they still have a ways to go.
But that’s exactly what they proved with Bashful Creatures. What separates these two albums the most are the surplus of glum tracks they offer. Epitaph (which, by definition, is a song played at a funeral), Poems and single-release Monsoon are mellower, watery, and downplayed. Each song is honest, although casually cryptic. Phrases we can understand by themselves are joined together like puzzle pieces to form the lyrics of these songs. Hippo Campus are completely rejecting the popularity formula that has worked for so many pop and indie pop groups. They neglect the purposefully vague lyrics (that can apply to any tween girl that’s willing to spend all of her college savings on MP3s, merchandise and tickets). They don’t rely on C-major and a I-V-vi-IV progression. They don’t hide behind a painfully optimistic outlook on life. Hippo Campus bare all sides to adolescence. The carefree summers, newer, more raw emotions, the hopeful future, and loss.
Frontman guitarist/vocalist Jake Luppen, guitarist Nathan Stocker, bassist Zach Sutton and drummer Whistler Allen took a risk with this new album. They challenged their own standards as well as those of the indie community. Hippo Campus maintain the lively and energizing reputation that Bashful Creatures and their other EPs set forth. This fresh LP is woozy, yet passionate. Young, yet mature. Blunt, yet enigmatic. Landmark is a picturesque archive of human progress, with innovative production quality to match its innovative perspective. I’m sure that other indie bands will notice this lo-fi sound that Hippo Campus have expanded on, and so will major indie music curators (AltNation already has). The four-piece were not the first to leap into a new territory--or to switch to this territory in the first place--but they are among those who have succeeded greatly.

LIVE MUSIC - The Hotelier @ Gorilla, Manchester 23/01/2017
Tumblr media
Review by Milli German
Local support Grotbags, were the perfect openers, bringing together short punk informed anthems and genuine, funny lyricism. There’s something wonderful about knowing the members of the band you’re watching can appreciate the genius of Jinkx Monsoon as much as you do.

Hiya! by GROTBAGS
New York’s Crying were the second support of the night, and deservedly doubled numbers in the venue. Their 2016 full length debut Beyond the Fleeting Gales plays unparalleled in a live setting, it branches off from their previous EP’s that made heavy use of chiptune, whereas the scope of their latest release feels broader, and charged with an unfleeting energy.

youtube
If the guy from the casino who befriended The Hotelier’s Christian Holden when they arrived to Manchester took up his offer of a guest list spot, he might not be too pleased to know that them sounding “close enough” to Blink 182, doesn’t quite ring true. But what The Hotelier do bring to the table is a unique and important sound for the genre.
Last year’s Goodness, their third full length that followed on from 2014’s stunning Home, Like Noplace Is There, may just have been the catalyst for change that bands who lie in the indie/emo/punk crossover needed.
Hearing this live creates a sort of blueprint in my mind for what I’d like to feel at other gigs: a relatively young band who consistently put out strong & relevant work, without burdening the rest of their discography with a sense of tiredness.
Indebted to brilliant live instrumentation and lyricism, every song felt like a band making the most of existing intelligently within the space of new wave indie/emo, one that can so often feel like it never moves forward. The set favoured tracks from Goodness, but included past gems such as ‘Your Deep Rest’ and ‘Among The Wildflowers’, whose emotional resonance can be felt twofold when seen live. ‘Two Deliverances’ and ‘Soft Animal’ were highlights, and a perfect example of what we mean when we say an artist has honed their craft.

Combining doom, stoner and groove, Essex’s Goat Monsoon have given us an early Christmas present in the shape of a 4-track EP. It’s been a great year and for us, it’s been a joy to…

Unveiling Isprava’s newest home this monsoon and mor
A unique piece of luxury – Presenting Casa Brava
Colonial Portuguese architecture combined with Isprava luxury, brings to life a villa that holiday dreams are made of.
Located in Parra, Bardez, North Goa, Casa Brava is a melting pot of unique design, style and luxury. The two-story home features four bedrooms that boast of beautiful layouts and inimitable décor accents sourced from all over the country, a stunning courtyard in the centre with a private pool and serene garden, a fully-equipped kitchen, a dining and living room that offers beautiful paddy field views and features handpicked antiques intermingled with some modern furniture, and an expansive terrace with a Banyan Tree spilling onto it. Designed to pay homage to the landscapes and cultural influences of Goa, Casa Brava is a gem in the Isprava crown. It has been built with the intention of maintaining the surrounding natural beauty and with design sensibilities that reflect Goa’s narrow lanes and little vaddos. On the inside, there is an attention to detail that enhances the villa’s look. Old world charm meets modern minimalism—from the doors to the floors, the rose painted glass windows to the light fixtures and stunning upholstery, every space and corner has been given a touch of style. Privacy, peace, beauty and luxury – Casa Brava ticks all the right boxes.
Isprava guides you on your home makeover
It’s time to set the refresh button, and give your home a stylish edit. Isprava gives you all the tips, tricks and trends of the moment to make sure you ace the transformation.
Whether it is a complete overhaul or just a few quick upgrades, the ultimate goal of any home makeover is to create something that will make you happy. The first step is deciding on how to add character to a particular space—it can be as easy as reupholstering a sofa in a funky floral fabric that matches your wallpaper or adding a set of satin pillows and woolen throws to your bed in the bedroom. For your bathroom, a free standing tub is a cool new trend to try—while dark walls and a few candles will add the dose of drama you desire. Embrace a colour palette that not only reflects your personality but also adds a layer of fun to any space. Task lamps, antique collectibles, functional furniture and chic seating arrangements will help revive your space, while mirrored glass additions will make a small space look bigger than it actually is. Abstract paintings and floral murals, sprawling rugs and carpets, arched doorways, curtains and indoor plants are other accents that can give your home a renewed sense warmth. An ornate chandelier can add an element of grandeur to your space, while a herringbone motif is also an interesting touch to incorporate. For more home makeover inspiration, browse through our villas.

Millennial’s Media Maverick in the Isprava Spotlight
A go-getter, media master, social influencer—Nikhila Palat has made waves with her work— being a Miss India finalist, former National champion in Tennis, a PR mogul at the Taj Hotel or consulting with us at Isprava. We talk all things style, design and luxury with her.
1. Style has so many facets. How do you think one’s fashion sensibilities merge with how their spaces look? Style is very personal. It is important to create a space that is reflective of your personality. This can be done by adding small elements to a room that have meaning in your life or by choosing colours and textures that speak to you.
2. Luxury can be many things. What is it to you? Time for me is luxury. Keeping that in mind, I believe we should use ours and others time wisely.
3. Tell us about your favourite Isprava Villa, and one element of style that truly stood out. My favourite is Villa Verde. Every aspect of the villa is beautifully designed however, the stand out feature for me is the exquisite light fixtures that create shadow art on the walls.
4. Goa for its beaches or the Nilgiris for its hillside serenity? It really is a tough choice. I personally am a beach baby; given half a chance and you will find me soaking in the sun and sands of a private island. But on the other hand, my dad's grandparents lived in Coonoor and so there is a lot of history connecting me to the Nilgiris'.
5. What usually is your favourite space in a home? I am a work-a-holic, so my favourite space at home is my small office area that I have created by the window overlooking the sea!
6. What is your opinion of the Isprava aesthetic? Isprava is the epitome of understated elegance. Nibhrant and his team have an intuitive understanding of design that is timeless. This is one of the many reasons for their success!

Amber Mark
Tumblr media
In the summer of 2013, Amber Mark’s mother passed away. She told Konbini, “Before she died, when she was still in the hospital, my mother gave me a leaflet explaining the stages of grief most people go through when they lose someone they love.” Amber says she didn’t experience those stages. She felt a lot, for sure, but not the defined, isolated ladder listed on the paper. Instead of trying to measure herself against the grief ruler, she wrote down her own stages. “Once I wrote down that list I was at that stage of not feeling better but, like, it was easier to deal with the fact that my mom was gone. That feeling of her gone was always there but it is almost easier to live with it,” she shared with Stereogum. Her list became the framework for 3:33am, her debut and stunning EP.
Spending time growing up in New York City, Miami, Goa and Berlin, geographically, her sound is unpinnable. It’s a blend of places she’s been and sounds she’s liked. It’s familiar yet totally refreshing and original. Given the album’s themes, the songs are, surprisingly, bops. The lyrics are heavy and real and honest, but you can groove to them. To Stereogum, she said, “What I really wanted to do with this EP, I didn’t want it to be really depressing. I didn’t want it to be, like, this sad, down EP about losing someone. I wanted it to be something that would uplift people. I think I tried to touch on more of the sadder emotions in the lyrics and to kind of uplift in the music. ‘Cause that’s the fun part is dancing and moving around. I wanted a mixture of both.” For example, “Lose My Cool” is an utter jam, but, ultimately, it’s about the anger she felt after her mother’s passing and how she took it out on the people around her. Featuring a more retro sound, “Can You Hear Me?” is another example of Amber jazzing up the hurt. Of its content, she said, “So, I went through this whole phase of... not feeling like my mom was around me so I wanted to write something almost asking if she was still around. I had a lack of faith in a sense.” This is not just a project for the bereaved. It’s a collection of songs for anyone, sure, but if you listen closely and are looking for comfort in a time of mourning or loss or hardship, you’re gonna find a very special offering.
While some tracks might mask or mix the message with the sound, the meaning of “Monsoon,” a highlight and my favorite song off the EP, is in the clear. “Monsoon season in India was always a tough time for me because those were the months that I had to spend away from my mom,” she told Genius. “Monsoon” is the sadness, the missing. The song talks of the guilt of not getting an early diagnosis. “I said it all the time, but you said that you were fine. And now you wonder why, and why you. I tried my best to make you check it out, huh? I cried so much it burnt my eyes, I begged every day. But all the stubborn things you do, I must’ve gotten that from you. Now there’s nothing they can do, and why you? I wished that there was something I’d done more. Knocked you out and dragged you there myself. Maybe then you’d be here… But you’re not here for my tears. It feels like monsoon every day.” The track builds in the most wonderful way, swelling in all the right places as you go on her journey – and perhaps your own – with the song. The music video is a perfect companion to the song. Shot in India because of her mother’s love for the country and in memory of all the times she and her mom would visit, it’s a contemplative, peaceful offering. The trip of loss and reflection that 3:33am offers is best encapsulated in this song.
Reflecting on her own stages of grief she wrote down and what each track represents, she told Stereogum, “Regret is called ‘Regret.’ Anger is ‘Lose My Cool.’ Isolation is ‘Space.’ Sadness would be the interlude into ‘Monsoon’ and also ‘Monsoon.’ ‘Can You Hear Me?’ is lack of faith and questioning. ‘Way Back’ is overcoming. It was definitely interesting to look at that list and, ‘Oh wow, this is really how I dealt with it without even realizing I was going through it, until I made a list.”
Simply, 3:33am is one of the most touching, helpful creations about death and dealing I’ve ever heard. For that alone, I’m very thankful for Amber Mark.

RULES: share four songs/pieces of music that represent your muse. ( REPOST. DON’T REBLOG. )
1. Shadows in the Moonlight (Miracle of Sound, Level 2)
Race you to the top Behold the distant streets below Times I hoped would last forever Never older grow They took my peace They took my name My family In a pallid robe And cryptic code My destiny Secret sign Shadows in the moonlight Clandestine Flashes of a pale white Climb the highest peaks of history On Venetian stone I climb and clamber Cloaked in dark Pools of crimson sin On swollen throats I leave my mark I take their blood I hear their last confessions seep I'm the shrouded face of reckoning That haunts their sleep Secret sign Shadows in the moonlight Clandestine Flashes of a pale white Climb the highest peaks of history Requiescat In Pace Take my revelations Make them your salvation On shores of gold My tale will end A love to hold A life to spend Secret sign Shadows in the moonlight Clandestine Flashes of a pale white Climb the highest peaks of history.
2. The Savage Side of Me (Miracle of Sound, Level 3)
As the rain it sways in the old monsoon And the pain it preys on an open wound It's cold, it's cold, it's cold Gotta break the stranglehold I have sealed myself I have cried my tears Now I steel myself to defy my fears And be strong, be strong, be strong I am right where I belong And as the sun breaks through Watching from a bird's eye view And I won't lay down There's a darker shade of courage In the strength I've found And it's letting loose the savage side of me You can yearn for life to be simple or You can learn from strife let it build your core And refuse, refuse, refuse Don't you bow to the abuse And as the night falls blue Watching from a bird's eye view And I won't lay down There's a darker shade of courage In the strength I've found And it's letting loose the savage side of me Fall down at the edge of my mind So much horror behind Burning heat Get back to my feet.... Go to the savage side And I won't lay down There's a darker shade of courage In the strength I've found And it's letting loose the savage side of me.
3. Hero (Skillet)
I'm just a step away I'm just a breath away Losin' my faith today (We're fallin' off the edge today) I am just a man Not superhuman (I'm not superhuman) Someone save me from the hate It's just another war Just another family torn (We're falling from my faith today) Just a step from the edge Just another day in the world we live [Chorus:] I need a hero to save me now I need a hero (save me now) I need a hero to save my life A hero'll save me (just in time) I've gotta fight today To live another day Speakin' my mind today (My voice will be heard today) I've gotta make a stand But I am just a man (I'm not superhuman) My voice will be heard today It's just another war Just another family torn (My voice will be heard today) It's just another kill The countdown begins to destroy ourselves [Chorus] I need a hero to save my life I need a hero just in time Save me just in time Save me just in time Who's gonna fight for what's right Who's gonna help us survive We're in the fight of our lives (And we're not ready to die) Who's gonna fight for the weak Who's gonna make 'em believe I've got a hero (I've got a hero) Livin' in me I've gotta fight for what's right Today I'm speaking my mind And if it kills me tonight (I will be ready to die) A hero's not afraid to give his life A hero's gonna save me just in time [Chorus] I need a hero Who's gonna fight for what's right Who's gonna help us survive I need a hero Who's gonna fight for the weak Who's gonna make 'em believe I need a hero I need a hero A hero's gonna save me just in time.
