I dislike how the fandom puts blame on Percy and Bianca for Nico’s situation. Percy and Bianca were both kids. It wasn’t Bianca’s responsibility to raise Nico. Neither Percy or Bianca should have been in a situation where they (actual children) were responsible for another child.

All three of them are examples of what happens when adults fail the children they are responsible for.

The Empire State Building was a brilliant blue, its light burning a straight line through the dim sky like a shot. Even from standing atop the cloudy palace on Olympus, Percy could see the way the wispy mist was illuminated in the night. It reminded him of the glow of a television screen in a dark living room and how the furniture reflected the light of a late-night show.

“Um, thanks,” he muttered to no one in particular, though he was sure that Zues acknowledged his uncertain gratitude in that holier-than-thou way of his.

The shimmering forms of many of the gods had already dissipated. Onto the next big thing, he guessed, or another immortal conflict he did not dare try to comprehend.

The meeting had adjourned not long ago, and the gods’ throne room echoed in near emptiness like a baseball field with no spectators. Lingering magic speckled the air to the point that Percy was not sure where it might end.

For some reason, the other demigods had disappeared, even Annabeth, and he felt her absence acutely. Just minutes ago, the room was brimming with life. Yet here he stood at the base of a crackling hearth ten times taller than he was and propped up on a marble pillar. He felt like a rather pathetic ant in the grand scheme of things.

Which was a dumb thing to feel when the rest of him was also bone tired with every single nerve ending in his body still screaming to run little half-blood run because Kronos will kill you—

Someone cleared his throat.

Percy swiveled around on his heels, breath escaping his lips too fast, and his heart pumping like mad.

Poseidon stood there with one of his hands raised. “Peace, Percy,” he said placatingly. “No one else is here.”

Nico accidently came across you when he was in the Underworld, it was obvious you were a new soul there, since you were very confused and glad to see a living being

At first he didn't like the fact that you were following him around, but he eventually warmed up to you

Nico would bring you with him out of the Underworld, without the premission of his father, and you two would travel together, even going to McDonalds

He doesn't like the rain, but when Nico saw the way you would dance in the rain every time it rained, he eventually started to join in, even if he said that he doesn't like it

I promise I'm not trying to start anything but I feel like I point out different things than most people are thinking with this show.

So my take on this is that book 1 in and of itself is pretty light. Besides the fact that they sanitized the pending war between Zeus and Poseidon (which is big mind you), they actually made the stakes feel high when Percy almost died twice (lol) so I will not judge until the whole season is out.

Also, they made Sally "dying" feel a lot worse in the show so there's that. Nowhere in the book was I convinced that she was actually dead. It doesn't help that Percy immediately thinks in the book that he will save her from the Underworld and not tell anyone. In the show, he's actually convinced. The scene is heartwrenching. If I didn't know better until Grover revealed it, I would've been convinced too.

Like what actually happens in those chapters up till Medusa in the book? Overall in the first 3 episodes, they watered down Medusa's fight but made her story more compelling. The problem with that episode was simply the fact that the fight had low stakes as a feeling because it was so quick.

I don't think the stakes feel low in the terms that characters can be killed on this quest. In fact, I felt more that characters could die in the show than in the book. I didn't really get that feeling until, like OP said, The Titan's Curse in the books. Percy almost died twice in this season already back-to-back and they were very convincing near-deaths. They have huge emotional impact on an individual character level. It actually makes me excited for Tyson's near-death in Sea of Monsters and what they can do for Bianca and Zoe in The Titan's Curse.

The show is good with individual stakes. What it is lacking is overall stakes.

What I don't feel are strong in the show are the stakes which are the gods and the war. What they watered down is not the danger to the characters and the risk of dying. They watered down how important the gods are supposed to feel (minus Dionysus and Hermes imo so far) and the war that threatens the world because they are about to fight. That is what I'm concerned about. They need to up the stakes for the gods. The gods are the gods. They control the nature of the world. I don't feel that yet.

actually to bring up how watered down and sanitized the first 3 episodes of percy jackson has been, it raises concerns for later books. the stakes are supposed to be high from book 1 and the bar continues to be raised. it’s an action packed series with monsters and gods and deadly quests. there’s the possibility of being killed. which raises the question, when titan’s curse rolls around, how will they handle not one but two character deaths? this is the book that’s the turning point in the series, where everyone senses this tonal shift and that they’re favorite characters could actually die. that kronos is serious and this impending war will be real, with real casualties, injuries, and intense battle scenes. how do you sanitize a literal war?
