the rage I feel when reading Blood of Olympus chapters 45-56 is almost equivalent in magnitude to the absolute joy I experience when reading The Last Olympian chapters 1-23.

remember when percabeth was good? when they meant the world to each other but had other people they cared about (nico, for one. both of them. so much), other worries and other storylines aside from their romantic plot? and when nico's completed arc wasn't repeated for no reason other than to dump more trauma on the youngest character in the series? when background characters were included in the story not for all the unnecessary last minute romantic subplots but because they were fun and fascinating to learn more about? and were actually friends with main characters? remember when grover was percy and annabeth's best friend forever? and antagonists were actually interesting and intimidating and had compelling goals? and the story revolved around friendship and family and loyalty? and death was definite and loss was palpable and battles were thrilling?

"what do we do?!" he whispers agressively trying to clean frosting off of your face.

"hide?" you offer in a hushed voice.

"hide? we can't hide, she'll panic."

"play dead?! I don't know, Perseus."

"guys?" Annabeth rounded the corner into the kitchen, her eyes widen as she takes in the early morning mess. "oh-..."

"Happy birthday?" Percy offers weakly, although Annabeth seems disinterested in the sentiment, sleepily wrapping her arms around his waist.

"it's 2am." she whispers, like she too had been apart of the secret, "you smell like vanilla."

Percy laughs quietly. "I know, wise girl. we didn't mean to wake you."

The sight is absolutely beautiful, beguiling in the kind of why that only the two of them together could be. you snap a picture, Percy is smiling but not at the camera and Annabeth is already close deep sleep again.

"go back to sleep." you yawn. "both of you. I'll finish the cake."

"are you sure?" Percy asks a look of uncertainty on his face.

"yeah I'm sure," you touch a loose blonde curl tucking it out of Annabeth's sleeping face. "Happy Birthday, Blonde."

i wish we could have gotten more gruniper in the pjo books. i understand rick didn’t necessarily write him to be a deep and complex character, but that’s what it turns out as - and i think some context behind their relationship would have been so insightful. we need like a romance novella of their first meeting in the woods or at a satyr party or something, so we can understand not only juniper a little better (i’m so excited to see her in the show because it will humanize her and give her so much more depth) but grover and why he loved her and how great of a team they are at saving the wild.

Headcanon that Annabeth takes a long time sometimes hours to fall asleep and wakes up very easily due to being ready for combat 24/7 and Percy falls asleep right away and has nightmares almost every night(some he doesn’t remember) so he startles awake every morning
