2 song changes in The Little Mermaid 2023

There were two small yet meaningful changes in the original lyrics to songs in the 2023 The Little Mermaid movie (that I know of) that are worth pointing out.

1. The English version of Kiss the Girl.

A small portion of the lyrics were changed so instead of Sebastian basically telling Eric "It's okay to kiss people without knowing if they consent" he instead tells him "If you don't know whether someone wants to be kissed, just ask!"

The original lyrics went

Yes, you want her Look at her, you know you do Possible she wants you too There is one way to ask her It don't take a word Not a single word Go on and kiss the girl

And were changed to

Yes, you want her Look at her, you know you do Possible she wants you too Use your words, boy, and ask her! If the time is right Then the time is tonight Go on and kiss the girl

2. The Brazilian Portuguese version of Part of Your World (Reprise)

In the original lyrics, Ariel says that she will one day belong to Eric. Like she's a possession to be owned:

Eu não sei bem como explicar I don't quite know how to explain [how I know] Que alguma coisa vai começar That something's about to start Só sei dizer que à você vou pertencer! I just know that [one day] I'm going to belong to you!

In the new movie, the lines were changed to

Domingo passado tive a oportunidade de assistir esse live action maravilhoso, foi muito emocionante e inspirador.

Quando vi o Brasil sendo dito pelo príncipe Eric não pude evitar o ato de fotografar e postar nos meus story.

Com a princesa Ariel com o cabelo afro assim como o meu achei simplesmente magnífica,indentifiquei-me com a princesa em vários de seus aspectos, notei que ela também coleciona um monte de objetos que para ninguém faz sentido, mas que para nós faz.

Fiquei muito tensa com a Úrsula, mas a Disney sempre dá um jeito de fazer tudo dar certo, além do mais notei a mudança de continente, e senti que o continente africano pudesse estar sendo representado na longa, e até inspirei-me a escrever sobre o Brasil.

Ah, e se um dia eu quis escrever um super príncipe diferente de todos, notei que basta-me escrever um príncipe brasileiro. 🤭
