listen I know it’s kind of corny and inaccurate to act like every single person in the dc universe knows each other and is besties but it IS endlessly funny to me to follow the web of connections and see how many degrees removed from each other everyone is.

like look at the arrowfam okay. ollie and dinah are together, ollie is homoerotic best friends with hal, dinah is homoerotic best friends with babs. roy is dating dick, has a kid with jade, and is basically an adoptive father to both grant emerson and rose wilson. connor is dating kyle and is constantly followed around by eddie fyers. mia is friends with a lot of the second gen teen titans kids, had an on-again-off-again thing going on with steph for a while, and is currently dating sienna. emiko is besties with courtney and some of the other recent teen titans. sin has a small army of protective aunts from the birds of prey. the real question is how far does it go before ollie puts a cap on the number of people who are invited to family brunch on sundays

I actually don’t really like that whole idea that humans are uniquely helpless and useless as babies among the animal kingdom (“thank cod we find babies cute, because otherwise we’d be extinct”). I assume the point of it is to reeeallly hammer down how special it is that humans have become the most influential species on the planet, how we don’t need to be like other apex predators in power, but I dunno, it’s not like every other animal has a super easy and wonderful time having babies and the babies are like mini adults the moment they are born. Sure, there’s your horses and elephants and whales that learn to walk or swim soon or immediately after birth, but let’s not forget your cats, your dogs, your wittle baby birds! And baby fish and many baby invertebrates are famously “useless and helpless” too (recall what you may know about the ocean sunfish), after all, most will die very soon after hatching and many species are plankton in their first life stage as they’re unable to fight the currents. Many more animals are dependent on their parent(s) and group to live, even as they learn to walk and run and eat on their own they’re still a hassle. Having a little guy or several little guys running around who have no idea about the dangers of the world and who keep getting into situations is a lot to deal with! Perhaps what’s unique about us is that we’re dependent on parents and community for “so long”, but we also have a long lifespan to enjoy which might not be possible if we grew up very fast and we still mature faster than some other animals (recall what you may know about sturgeons and the Greenland shark)

OK. Tell them. Make it a teaching moment. Everyone who's in your movement learned the background from somewhere at some point, maybe this is that point for that person. Give them a jumping off point that they can dive into later.

"Oh but I shouldn't be responsible for teaching baby -punks about the history and the how-tos and--"

OK. Then don't tell them. You don't have to be responsible for teaching people with a budding interest in your group the ins and outs and how-tos. That's fair and valid! It can be a lot of work. Someone else will handle it

"But I'm annoyed that they would try to claim to be part of/be interested in my community without knowing all the details that I know after being in it for months/years/decades, they're dumb, they're posers, they're--"

OK. Then don't engage with them, if it's that bad. Maybe someone else will come around and tell them the history, maybe they'll pick it up on their own, maybe they'll just enjoy the fashion elements for awhile.

I feel like we have a few options here. People can either talk to them, share the history, share the values, share the praxis. Or they can just chase off anyone who even thinks about dipping a toe in their community, and then wonder why it's dying off later down the line.

I dunno, maybe I'm too naive and patient or whatever. But if people are entering your -punk spaces without knowing The Rundown of what you feel they need to know, maybe being nice about it and informing people instead of immediately assuming stupidity and malicious intent could help you make a new friend. Even the loudest voices in a space had to learn from somewhere, and not everyone has the luxury of being in the space as the History was Happening--whether it's an age thing or a not being aware of the space thing. Or maybe I just don't see what the big deal is behind people hating people who like the aesthetic of something and don't know the behind the scenes history about it yet.

Because I believe in the word 'yet.' No one comes into this world knowing everything about everything, and we're all constantly learning new things. I'm not gonna degrade someone and call them a poser for not knowing what I know. Because if it were me, interested in a scene but getting chased out and called a poser? I wouldn't hit the books and study up, I'd go 'that fuckin sucks, those people sucked' and then avoid anyone and anything having to do with it.

So chase people off and call them posers if you want. But if your community starts dwindling, don't be fucking shocked.

I do enjoy that the Universe in ISAT is not only like, the literal universe that everything exists within but it's also a deity along with that; it's personified in a way. And with what little we do know about it such as it being the source of Wish Craft, which has loopholes to make your wish suck as much as possible to the point it's not really a "be careful what you wish for" situation, it's a "don't make wishes, asshole, fuck you" situation because the mere act of wanting to stay with your family will put you in a situation where you die repeatedly and gain a year's worth of trauma in what is technically a single day. Knowing all of this, I can only assume that the Universe fucking hates you. It's a personified deity and it's personality is constantly pissed off.
