Trigger Warning: Mentions of Homophobia
Vanderburg Twin seen Cheating from His Commoner Boyfriend
These are the words sitting in front of Dowager Duchess Margaux.
On her screen, a picture of her son, chatting with a woman on a pub probably around Foxbury. They were quite close in the photograph. She thinks they were about to hug, or had just hugged, but she could see the body language–none of them had tense shoulders, and none of them wore an awkward smile.
She rubbed her temple. What gave her a pounding headache was the tabloid’s assumptions of her son dating a commoner boyfriend–Louie Davis, the twins’ friend.
Every showbiz news network, news site–whatever–speculated that he and Louie were dating, as the paparazzi had taken quite a few pictures of them together when their friend group were out, when they were still at high school. Her private secretaries spent a lot of time giving the networks kill orders to kill every picture of the children, especially the photographs of Louie and Seamus “together”, on a reason stating that they were minors, and scared the networks that they could be sued by the parents for taking their photos without their consent. They made sure they never mentioned Mousse’s relationship status.
She even sent a peace offering to Louie’s parents, some new set of high-quality pots and pans for the father, a new handbag for the mother, and a new dress for Sidera Harper–Louie’s girlfriend.
Louie has a girlfriend, for Watcher’s sake.
Bernie entered the room, slamming the door. She could see him stressed. Obviously.
“This is why I told him to release a statement!” He almost growled. “The family never batted an eye when they said he’s gay. But I know the Queen Mother was disappointed.”
“Didn’t stop her from showing her favoritism to the twins, though,” Penny pointed out.
“Yes, Penny,” Bernie exasperatedly sighed. “But the disappointment is there. Did you see how she’s preferring Julie more than her brother?”
“Or maybe,” Penny rolled her eyes, “Julie is the Duchess so she’s more focused on her?”
Bernie exhaled. His heated glare targeted the ceiling, “Look,” he looked back at her, “the family is giving me shit right now–excuse me, Your Grace–they don’t like the cheating allegations. They can leave the boy be and be gay than see him as a cheater. He is considered his father’s spitting image, and they would hate it if he’s painted as an adulterer!”
Penny scoffed, “What, you’d rather have the family be homophobic than give you shit about a cheating scandal?” “What? No!” Bernie let out a noise of frustration. “Look at Prince Gerard and Mr. Simon, since when did the family release their disappointment?”
“Obviously not publicly. Prince Gerard and his husband stepping down from royal duties, retiring from his senior royal work, and moving to Starlight Shores is very telling. And don’t reason with me with Milo and Ramon Perez. The family doesn’t mind them– don’t care even –they’re distant relatives of the household. They’re far away from the throne, Bernie. As long as it’s not the main family, not from the line of King Pierce, they’re fine with it, because it doesn’t steal the show, doesn’t steal the limelight, doesn’t tamper royal values.”
Penny pointed a finger to Bernie. If he was near, Margaux knew the younger secretary would shove him with it, “That’s how homophobic they are.”
“Enough, you two!” Margaux raised her voice. “Let’s not put the blame on my son here.”
“That’s not what I – ”
She held her hand as she stood up from her seat. Bernie closed his mouth.
“What we’re going to do is fix this. You will drive to Foxbury, get my twins, their friends, including this girl, and we will debrief them. From there, we will ask Mousse to release a statement, which includes clarification on why he never spoke before–force him if need be, and then we will have Julie release a statement that shows support,” she motioned to Penny, “which includes a picture of their friend group, with Louie and Sidera together– take note of this –and my son and this girl sitting beside each other. Stage them to be as intimate as possible, have him sling an arm around her waist–anything. That will shut them up.”
“Excellent idea, my lady.”
“And if this doesn’t work?”
“Then we face the wrath of the Queen Mother.”
Seamus spared a quick glance to Bea, who stood beside him, helping him with his presentation.
Lou? He recalled the conversation he and Louie had. How did you know you…liked…Sid?
Louie had whipped his head to face him so fast Seamus had almost laughed. Dude…
He had sighed. I don’t know Louie. I thought of Bea as a friend, but I’m starting to see something more. I can no longer see her as a friend. Every night I think about her, her voice, her laughs, the way she speaks. The way she smartly answers our professors, the way she handles her fans inside the campus, telling them to move their asses away and not disturb her education…I always look forward to seeing her, Lou, but I’m also nervous when I’m about to see her. I was never the one to look conscious about my appearance because everyone finds me handsome anyway –
– Woooow. You sounded like a prick there. Louie had laughed at him.
Seamus had chuckled at this, and then continued, When I’m with her, I always find myself worrying about how I look. Do I look good? I’ve asked the girls about it. Julie always says yes, and Sid just gave me a thumbs up. My confidence spikes–until I see her.
Yeah, and you buy the magazine that has her at the cover, Louie had teased him by adding another thing that he’s so embarrassed to admit.
Seamus remembered giving him a look. He also remembered Louie stuck his tongue out to tease him more.
Anyway, his friend had patted him on the back firmly. You’ve fallen in love, my boy.
And back to the present. This is why she’s here. He invited her under the pretense of asking her help. Honestly, he can breeze through this presentation with how inspired he is.
He’s going to confess to Bea. Right here. Right now.
“Bea– ”
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
He tried not to click his tongue. Smiling at Bea, he said, “I’ll get it.”
As soon as he opened the door, in came Louie, pushing Seamus back into his room, and kicking the door closed. He looks worried.
“Nobody freak out,” Louie said, but it looked like he said that for himself.
Worry etched on Bea’s face. “What’s going on?”
“Girl, I said, don’t freak out!” Louie let out a sound that made Seamus almost laugh.
“No one’s freaking out but you, Lou. What’s up?” Seamus chuckled.
“There’s…” Louie gulped. “There’s paparazzi outside our door!”
They jogged down the stairs, and when the paparazzi noticed them through the glass windows of their door, they pounded, demanding them to step outside. It was locked, luckily, and Seamus is sure they wouldn’t break the window–no one really liked to pay property damage.
“Juls,” Louie said to his phone, “lock your front door. Do not go out. Your brother and I will handle this.”
Seamus heard him. What his sister said, he doesn’t know, as Louie had immediately dropped the call.
“What should we do?” his friend asked. “Should we call Mr. Braxton?”
Seamus thought for a moment. He’d hate to have Bernie here. He’s going to give him one hell of a lecture. You should’ve released a statement a long time ago!
“I’ll go out and talk,” he finally said. “Just a quick announcement…”
“I’ll go with you,” Louie firmly nodded.
“Then I’ll go as well,” Bea added.
“Are you sure?” Louie asked, worried. “I think it’s safe for you to stay inside.”
Bea looked at Seamus. He sighed and gave her a small smile. “Okay, but if it gets too much, Louie will bring you inside, alright?”
“Lord Seamus! Is it true you’re cheating with your boyfriend?”
“Mr. Davis, how do you feel that he’s cheating with that girl right beside you?”
“Seriously? I have a girlfriend!” Louie scowled.
Seamus whispered back to him, “That’s the first and last reaction you’ll give them. Let me handle this.”
Louie shared a glance with Bea. She nodded at him, before looking down at her feet to avoid the paparazzi. Louie rubbed the back of his neck.
Seamus saw his sister and Sid watching through the windows of their door. He knows what she’s thinking. Don’t. He looked away.
“I’m here to confirm one thing,” Seamus started, and the commotion stopped. The journalists waited. He continued, “Bea and I…” he glanced at her. I’ll have to confess this way. I’m sorry.
“We’re dating. The cheating allegations are not true–never is, never was. No relationship before Bea. My sister and I are dear friends of Louie, and his girlfriend, Ms. Harper. I have been silent to the media for many years, even when you assumed my orientation, as I believed that leaving you be is enough, and not engaging with your behavior will keep my family safe. As I’m seeing right now, it’s not. You’re putting my friends at risk. Now, I suggest you leave, before we call the campus security.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the journalists started speaking over each other. A cacophony of more questions. Seamus turned on his heel, pulling Bea with him, and on cue, Louie followed suit, shielding them as they went back inside. He elbowed some journalists away, then quickly closed the door behind him, locking it.
“I’ll call Bernie,” Seamus said, exhaling. “Call security, please.”
Louie nodded.
Seamus looked at Bea. He doesn’t know what to make of her expression. He understood why she was angry. She should be. He should’ve confessed to her first before publicizing that they’re dating.
“We’ll talk after this,” Bea finally said.
There goes my confession.

+ Alex Walter x OC

Except tragedy that ensues, the death of their parents and older sister. They'll have to navigate a life without their family, just throw in love, the countryside, and a whole lot of boys in one roof.
+ Authors Note: Hey guys I really hope you enjoy this first chapter, I was really inspired after seeing Ashby play Alex and absolutely fell in love 🤍
Chapter 0.0 | Two Time Zones Apart
The sound of LA traffic was not great, but it was definitely quieter than the sound of the streets of New York. It's only been 6 Months since I moved to LA semi-permanently. I still got homesick often but there was no place like California. Ever since the transition from being a model to a singer it was a choice I had to make, with mom and dads approval of course, even if it meant seeing Lucy and Jackie less.
"Oh Gosh. What time is it?" I grumbled as I rubbed my eyes. I looked towards my bedside table and picked up my phone. "10:30 AM" I removed the bed covers and stretched my arms over my head. The smell of my room always gave me some comfort in the mornings. I headed to the restroom and pulled my hair into a bun and turned the faucet on. I started washing my teeth when I heard my phone ringing. I ran back to my room to pick up my phone that was lying on the bed. A video call from Jackie. I quickly pick up the phone as I walk back to the bathroom.
"Juswt whun sewkand-" I attempted to say with the tooth brush still in my mouth. Jackie let out a quick laugh, "take your time Eid." I put my finger up, just one moment, and place the phone in front of the faucet handles, holding it up. I quickly rinse out the toothpaste and splashed my face with water to ensure I would fully wake myself up.
"Hi Jacks! How's it going?" I waved and picked up my phone.
"EDEN! It's going so well! I can't wait for you and Lucy to come home today! I missed you guys so much." Jackie smiled softly.
"Oh my, we haven't been away from you that longgggg" I teased as i sat down on my Vanity. I panned my phone to the stack of luggage by my window.
"Okay I know, BUT, I just missed you guys so much." She sighed. "It's been a month since I've seen you and Lucy. I'm just so excited for you to see my excellent work tonight."
"I know Jacks, My flight is at 2 so I'll probably be there by 7-ish." I start applying my makeup and look away from my phone. " and plus Lucy will be there sooner than me, so you'll get her while you wait for meeee."
She laughs, "Right, what would I do without your wisdom." She stays quiet for a couple of seconds, "How's your new song going?"
I wince, "It's going..." She looks at me confused. "I've just been lacking in inspiration lately. I'm hoping going home will help with that."
"I'm sure you'll get a spark of inspiration once you spend some good old fashioned time at the ballet with me."
"Thanks Jackie, I've missed you guys so much. I can't wait to get there tonight."
I stop to think. "Dinner at The Penrose?"
I look at her smile, "of course Eden! That's our spot."
"All right deal" I look at the time, 11:30AM, "All right sis, I have to head to the airport, see you soon!" I reach over to hang up, "wait! Remember mom and dad will pick you up later tonight so we can all go to dinner together."
"Okay, perfect! Bye Jacks, love you!"
"Bye Eids!" I hung up.
I start getting up and shutting the curtains. It might be a while until I'm back but I'd rather keep my room clean.
Ding Dong.
I head over to the front door that smells strongly of oak. Walking past the pictures I have hanging of Mom, Dad, Lucy, Jackie and I. I open the door and smile as I see the face of my amazing Manager, Lizzie. "Liz! Come to say goodbye to your favorite client." I giggled as she stepped in. "Excuse me! Not just my client, more like my favorite friend!" I hug her and drag her to my room.
"Oh gosh, look at all this baggage..." she exclaims standing in front of my suitcases. She reaches over and picks one up. "Alright Eden! Let's get moving and load these into the car, your driver is waiting."
I look over to her and smile, "You got it boss!" I salute. It was an easy load up and we wasted no time getting in the car. "Are you excited to see your family again?" Lizzie asked. "Yeah I'm a bit nervous though. I haven't seen them in a couple of months, I feel like I've missed out on a lot." It was hard being apart from them and not being able to see them as often as I used to.
Lizzie looks at me and smiles softly, her polished nails and her soft hands reach over to mine. She grabs them and turns to me. "E, you need this. You've been homesick for a while and I think this trip will help you with the new song." I lean my head back against the headrest and turn my face to look out of the window. "I know Liz." I turn back towards her. "Thank you for helping me today. It means a lot. I'll miss you lots."
She just smiles at me and I start feeling tired, car rides always seem to wear me out. I take one last look at the highway we're on and slowly close my eyes. I let sleep take over me and an oddly weird feeling at the pit of my stomach. I hear Liz whisper, "I'll wake you when we get there."

Posthumous Characters GIF Sets → Cassandra Baratheon
Though unquestionably part of the conspiracy, the roles played by the three women had been comparatively minor. For that reason, and on account of their sex, Lord Manderly and the regents chose to show them mercy. Lucinda Penrose and Priscella Hogg were condemned to have their noses cut off, with the understanding that the punishment would be stayed should they give themselves to the Faith, so long as they remained true to their vows. Cassandra Baratheon’s high birth spared her the same punishment; she was, after all, the late Lord Borros’ eldest child and sister to the present Lord of Storm’s End, and had once been betrothed to King Aegon II. Though her mother, Lady Elenda, was not well enough to attend the trials, she had sent three of her son’s bannermen to speak for Storm’s End. Through them (and Lord Grandison, whose lands and keep were also of the Stormlands), it was arranged for Lady Cassandra to wed a minor knight named Ser Walter Brownhill, who ruled a few hides of land on Cape Wrath from a castle oft described as being made of “mud and tree roots.” Thrice bereft, Ser Walter had fathered sixteen children by his previous wives, thirteen of whom still lived. It was Lady Elenda’s thought that caring for these children and any additional sons or daughters that she herself might give Ser Walter would keep Lady Cassandra from plotting any further treasons. (And so it did.)

ASOIAF you know when I first read through the books and seen Reddit freefolk those discussion boards. I was like sansan I could see it. Dany married Drogo and the age cap was big there. lysa and Jon it could happen. I still think it could happen, you never know with grrm to be frank. But then I started my rereads and heard the whispers of Jonsa and grrm confirms Jon is lyanna son, and as we all know cousin marriage is huge in westeros.
Tywin & Joanna Lannister
Rickard & Lyarra Stark
Jon & Rowena Arryn
Shella & Walter Whent of Harrenhal
Paxter Redwyne & Mina Tyrell
Viserys I Targaryen & Aemma Arryn
Aegon III & Jaehaerya Targaryen
Alyn Velaryon & Baela Targaryen
Aerys I Targaryen & Aelinor Penrose
Benfrey & Jyanna Frey
Alys & Jared Frey
I didn't see it at first but when I did connect the dots I got so excited just because it makes sense. I hate when a book/movie makes no sense and the plot and clues are irrelevant for the sake of surprise.

Hatshepsut - Pharaoh
Hatshepsut (c.1508 BC-1457 BC) was the daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I. She was married to her father’s heir, who was also her half-brother, Thutmose II. Hatshepsut gave birth to a daughter, but no son. Therefore, Thutmose II chose his son by a concubine, Thutmose III , to succeed him.
Thutmose II died when his son was still young and Hatshepsut became the queen dowager. She soon consolidated her power and, during the 7th year of her stepson’s reign, proclaimed herself co-regent and was later crowned Pharaoh. She would be one of the few women in the history of ancient Egypt to rule in her own right.
It’s difficult to know what led her to defy conventions. Was it ambition on her part? The fact that her stepson accepted this co-regency, even after reaching the age to rule alone, shows the complexity of the situation.
Hatshepsut used propaganda to solidify her unusual position. She pretended for instance, that she was the daughter of the god Amun. She focused on civil affairs and undertook an intensive building program, restoring temples and having massive monuments built. She notably commissioned the construction of her own funerary temple at Deir el-Bahari. Trade flourished under her reign and she sent a commercial expedition to the land of Punt.
Hatshepsut also led military campaigns. Fragments and inscriptions found at Deir el-Bahari mention her military activity and there are depictions of Hatchepsut smiting her enemies. Those could be, however, symbolic and aiming at showing what a Pharaoh was supposed to do. The same ambiguity can be found for the previous female Pharaoh Sobekneferu (r. c.1806-1802 BC) who had been depicted in a similar fashion. Though commanding Egypt’s armies was part of the duties of a Pharaoh, one can’t be sure if she led troops for real.
More conclusive evidence can however be found for Hatshepsut. Indeed, an unofficial graffito recorded by a man named Ti who served under Hatshepsut testifies of her military activity. He indeed states he followed her on campaign and that he saw her “overthrowing the Nubian nomads” and their chiefs brought to her as prisoners. He saw her “destroying the land of Nubia”. Ti furthermore suggests that Hatshepsut was present during the fighting. Ti himself was attended the battle as a bureaucrat. Further confirmations of campaigns in Nubia comes from other inscriptions such as on the stela of a man named Djehuty, who tells that he saw Hatshepsut on the battlefield, collecting the spoils of war. She also seems to have campaigned in the North-East of Egypt as an inscription at Deir El-Bahari says of Hatchepsut that “her arrow is amongst the Northeners”.
It seems that Hatshepsut died of natural causes during the 22nd year of her rule. After her death, there was an attempt to erase both her name and her memory. Her cartouches and her portraits were defaced and her monuments either renamed or destroyed. However, this attempt at erasing her completely was, as it can be seen today, unsuccessful.
Here’s the link to my Ko-Fi if you want to support me.

Cassandra Baratheon was a noblewoman from House Baratheon during the reign of kings Viserys I, Aegon II and Aegon III Targaryen. She was the eldest of the four daughters of Lord Borros Baratheon of Storm's End. She and her sisters were known as the Four Storms.
At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, Prince Aemond Targaryen arrived at Storm's End. Lord Borros offered the hand of any of his daughters, noting that Cassandra would be the first to flower. Prince Aemond agreed, though the identity of the daughter is not known, save it was not Maris. The lord and prince were haggling over dates and dowries the morning Prince Lucerys arrived, and claiming he could not marry Cassandra or her sisters due to his betrothal to Rhaena Targaryen, and was sent away by Lord Borros.
Later, in return for the support of Ser Perkin the Flea and the stormlords in restoring King Aegon II to the Iron Throne, Queen Alicent Hightower agreed that the king would marry Cassandra Baratheon. As the king's sons, Prince Jaehaerys and Prince Maelor had both died, Aegon II wished to marry Cassandra Baratheon at once after retaking the Iron Throne, and have sons on her.
It is said that Lady Cassandra wept when she learned that Aegon II had died and that she would not be a queen.
Lady Elenda sent Cassandra, Ellyn, and Floris to represent House Baratheon at the coronation of Aegon III Targaryen and his wedding to Princess Jaehaera. Cassandra became a lady companion to the new queen after the wedding. When Jaehaera was found dead on the moat of spikes below Maegor's Holdfast, some blamed Lady Cassandra. Her detractors claimed that the disappointment at not being a queen had turned her sour, and bitterly resented having to care for a weepy and feeble-witted queen whom she blamed for all her woes. After Jaehaera's death, Lady Elenda put Cassandra and Ellyn forward as potential queens for Aegon III. The rumor that she had murdered Jaehaera was heard again before the Maiden's Day Cattle Show, likely due to the actions of Lord Unwin Peake, who hoped to further his own daughter as a marriage candidate for the king.
Lady Elenda had sent three Baratheon bannermen to speak for Cassandra during her trial. Through them, and Lord Lorent Grandison, Cassandra was spared the harsher punishments of Lucinda Penrose and Priscella Hogg due to her high birth. Instead, she was arranged to marry the minor knight Ser Walter Brownhill, thirty years her elder and who had fathered sixteen children in total upon three previous wives. Through caring for Ser Walter's thirteen living children and the additional sons or daughters she might give him, Lady Elenda thought Cassandra's plotting would cease, and it did.

“Well, that’s that,” Margaux exhaled. She stood beside Bernie, who sat on his chair. They were reading something from the monitor–the “breaking news” about her son’s relationship with a Beatrice Valderama.
“The family’s quick as well, voicing their support,” Bernie nodded. He let out a sigh of relief. That means less work, he thought.
He stood up from his chair, and was about to lead Margaux out of the office when she said, “What about us, Bernie? Are we ever going public?”
He looked at her, stunned. His thoughts drifted to Penny’s advice. The young secretary asked him not to engage with Her Grace’s advances. Normally, he can hold himself well, even if he had to love her at an arm’s length, but now that Julie is close to taking office…
“You know we can’t…” He started but she cut him off.
“Julie had established herself as the Duchess now, that means we have freedom without jeopardizing my children,” Margaux smiled, pulling him close to her.
“I know that my dear Margaret,” Bernie sighed, his hands finding themselves on her lower back, “But you’re still regent. We don’t have that freedom yet until your daughter comes back. And even if so, would your children accept us? Would they stand for us? You know yourself that your relationship with the family is fragile enough. What keeps you connected with them is through your children – the children of Prince Seamus.”
“My children will understand,” Margaux said firmly.
“Margaret, please,” Bernie pleaded, “You don’t know that. Your children can make their own decisions, so who’s to say they’ll support us? They love their father so much, and you’re the only person left that reminds them of him. If they find out that you’ve moved on, you’ll have one thread left as a connection – the wife of the late prince, which you’ll lose eventually.”
“They wouldn’t do that to their own mother,” Margaux’s voice sounded strained.
“They wouldn’t, but the family will,”Bernie emphasized.
Margaux pushed him from her, and Bernie tried to embrace her back, but his hands hung empty. “Why are you being so difficult, Bernie? Don’t you love me–”
“–Your Grace, I’ve just received a call from Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Judith Ward is waiting for tea,” Penny barged in, not looking away from her phone.
Bernie stepped back, and Margaux said, “I’ll freshen up for a bit, please tell Judith I’ll be there.”
When Margaux had left, Bernie stared at the empty space beside him. His heart squeezed painfully. His attention was on Penny when she asked, “You look constipated. You alright, sir?”
“I’m alright…”

Professor Stephen Hawking, the renowned British physicist and author of A Brief History of Time, has died at the age of 76.He died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning. In a statement to the Press Association, his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.
"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.
"His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever."
The world-renowned theoretical physicist and cosmologist was best known for his work on black holes. Hawking theorized that, contrary to the prevailing scientific belief that black holes were inescapable for all forms of matter and energy, they actually emitted a form of radiation ― now known as Hawking radiation. He also played a key role in the mathematical effort to unify Einstein’s general theory of relativity with the emergent field of quantum physics.
Hawking used his position as one of the world’s most famous scientists as a platform to discuss a wide range of issues, from the existence of extraterrestrial life to the nature of philosophy. He skyrocketed to public prominence in 1988, when he published his first general-audience book, A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes. The cosmology treatise has sold approximately 10 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling science books of all time.
In 1963, when he was just 21 years old, Hawking was famously diagnosed with the debilitating motor neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Though 80 percent of those with ALS die within five years of diagnosis, and Hawking’s own doctors gave him roughly two years to live, he survived for decades, perhaps longer than any other patient with the disease in medical history. Hawking used a wheelchair to move around and a sophisticated computer system to speak for much of his time as a public figure.
The physicist’s inspiring ― and turbulent ― personal story was dramatized in the 2014 movie “The Theory of Everything,” which was based on a memoir by Hawking’s first wife, Jane Wilde. Actor Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of Hawking in the film won him an Oscar for best actor.
Hawking was born on Jan. 8, 1942 ― the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death ― in Oxford, England, to Frank, a physician specializing in tropical disease, and Isobel, a medical secretary. He and his three younger siblings grew up mostly in the town of St. Albans, just north of London, in what has been described as a highly intellectually-engaged home.
At the St. Albans School, Hawking was an indifferent student, preferring to spend his time playing board games and tinkering with computers. But he nonetheless gained admittance to his father’s alma mater, University College at Oxford University, in 1959, at the age of 17.
Upon arriving at Oxford, Hawking toyed with the idea of studying either math or medicine before eventually settling on physics. His attitude toward academic work remained lackadaisical in college. He rarely attended lectures and has said that he spent only 1,000 hours on studies during his three years at Oxford, or just an hour a day.
Still, Hawking’s natural brilliance started to shine through as an undergraduate ― and he apparently felt that his tutors resented him for doing so well with so little work. When he submitted his final thesis, it was given a grade on the border between first-class honors and second-class honors, so Hawking had to face an oral exam that would determine his grade. Knowing his reputation, he reportedly told his examiners, “If you award me a First, I will go to Cambridge. If I receive a Second, I shall stay in Oxford, so I expect you will give me a First.”
He got a First. And, as promised, Hawking enrolled in graduate school at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1962, studying under the physicist Dennis Sciama and the famed astronomer Fred Hoyle. He became interested in the then-nascent study of black holes and singularities, the existence of which had been implied by Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
While studying at Cambridge, Hawking met Wilde, a fellow St. Albans native who was a student in modern languages at Westfield College in London at the time. Before the two started dating, Hawking collapsed while ice skating and couldn’t get up. His mother made him go to the doctor, who diagnosed him with ALS and estimated he had just over two years to live.
Years later, during a symposium at Cambridge on his 70th birthday, Hawking reflected on how much he struggled to stay motivated after his diagnosis. Why work so hard for a Ph.D. when you could be dead in two years?
However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.Stephen Hawking, as he celebrated his 70th birthday
“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet,” he said. “Try to make sense of what you see and about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”
Hawking’s motor control deteriorated rapidly; he was soon walking to class on crutches. Yet the disease spurred him to deepen his relationship with Wilde quickly. They married in 1965.
After receiving his doctorate in cosmology, Hawking stayed at Cambridge to continue studying some of the most essential questions about the structure of the universe. In 1968, a year after Jane gave birth their eldest son, Roger, Hawking took a post at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge and began the mature phase of his academic career.
Over the next decade, Hawking published a string of groundbreaking papers on cosmology and theoretical physics that made him a celebrity in the scientific community.
He and English mathematician Roger Penrose wrote key papers in the late 1960s that related the Big Bang ― the event that created the universe ― and black holes, proving that both were the result of singularities in the fabric of space-time. In the early 1970s, Hawking and several other physicists co-wrote a proof of the hypothesis that all black holes can be described in terms of just their mass, angular momentum and electric charge.
It was in 1974 that Hawking proposed what is widely considered his most significant theory: that black holes can emit subatomic particles, now known as Hawking radiation. Prior to his paper, physicists had been sure that nothing could escape the crushing gravity of a black hole. The existence of Hawking radiation also implies that black holes can eventually wither away and die, something that had previously been inconceivable to scientists.
Soon after publishing his paper, Hawking, just 32 years old, was named a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society. He briefly taught at the California Institute of Technology before assuming the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, a post dating back more than 400 years that was once held by Isaac Newton.
Though Hawking’s family life flourished during this time ― he and Jane Hawking went on to have two more children ― his health did not. He reluctantly started using a wheelchair in 1969, and by the mid-70s, he could no longer feed or clothe himself.
In 1985, Hawking contracted pneumonia while on a trip to Switzerland. Doctors performed a tracheotomy that allowed him to breathe but rendered him unable to speak naturally. At first, he communicated using word cards, which was agonizingly slow. But in 1986, computer scientist Walter Woltosz gave him a device that would vocalize words he typed using a joystick. Hawking called this system, which has since been upgraded several times, “The Computer.” Its electronic voice was an integral part of the physicist’s public image.
Hawking first came up with the idea of writing a book about cosmology for a general audience in 1982. He said he conceived of the project to “earn money to pay [his] daughter’s school fees.” The first draft of A Brief History of Time was finished in 1984, but Hawking’s publisher felt it was too difficult for laypeople to understand, so he went back to work. The revision process became more complicated after Hawking lost his voice in 1985, but he managed to publish the book in 1988.
It was a massive hit: The book was on The New York Times’ best-seller list for three years and The Sunday Times’ U.K. best-seller list for nearly five. Its publication propelled Hawking to international fame that’s endured to this day. He published five additional general-audience books on science, plus one memoir and four children’s books. He also guest-starred on both “The Simpsons” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Stephen and Jane Hawking separated after several years of tension in 1990, which Jane said was exacerbated by her husband’s newfound “fame and fortune.” The physicist began a relationship with Elaine Mason, one of his nurses. After his divorce from Jane Hawking, he married Mason in 1995.
Hawking and his ex-wife did not speak for several years, but they started communicating again after he and Mason got divorced in 2007. Stephen and Jane Hawking later began living around the corner from one another in Cambridge.
In 2011, Hawking appeared on the Discovery Channel TV series “Curiosity,” in which he reflected on the origins of the universe and rejected the likelihood of both a God and an afterlife. (He once dismissed the latter as “a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”) Only in confronting the finite nature of death, he said, do we appreciate the remarkable beauty of life in the present.
“There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either,” Hawking said. “We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”
In addition to his two former wives, Hawking is survived by three children and three grandchildren.
