"The Plagues" - a 76th Hunger Games concept

This idea lives 24/7 in my mind and it's not even paying me rent, so I have to let it out and share it with someone. I love the Hunger Games saga, I can't wait for the next book, but now I absolutely want to talk about a 76th edition concept.

So, we need to send a message with this edition and Capitol City has to pay for what they did, maybe not everyone, but for sure rich, wealthy and powerful families that could do at least something to stop the games surely have to. And we need to punish them once for all for their 75 years lasting dictatorship; nothing's better than representing this with God's Wrath.

Remember what happened in the Bible when the Egyptian pharaoh didn't want to let Moses and Jews go away? God sent the ten plagues. This sounds familiar, it's similar to Panem's situation, isn't it?

So, in this edition, the tributes are reaped amongst those families' firstborns (keep that info for later, we'll need that).

Our arena will be an ancient Egypt inspired city, the weapons they can have are mainly kopeshes and whips, but there are also venomous snakes and the desert is very cold at night so this alone is dangerous.

We'll base our arena events on the ten plagues and you know, they're already deadly and this situation would be very hard to face but Capitol City always wanted a show from the Hunger Games, and we'll give them one.

I mean, sending random people in an arena, dressed up as some ancient Egyptian folk? I don't know, kinda boring to watch, and... they were all from the high class, they're friends and maybe they could refuse to fight each other, the plagues are dangerous but, as I said, we want a show.

We can subject the tributes to mental control (MK ultra or stuff like that) so we can convince them they're not Capitol citizens but they think they're a pharaoh, his wife, the visir, a merchant, a slave, a priest of some god, so in the arena they'll think they are actual Egyptian people. This is how you put on a show.

We have the arena, we have the tributes and we also know what arena events there will be, but... let's try to imagine what could happen for a moment.

The first day would be calm until water stars changing into blood, this would lead to a general confusion and maybe the tributes would ask the priest what's happening and he wouldn't know, the next days frogs, mosquitos and flies would invade the arena and after this the tributes would most likely start a riot against the pharaoh and his wife, once the rebellion is sedated animals they used for food die, and the tributes (TRIGGER WARNING) are forced to rely on cannibalism, but anyone who ate another tribute will start to have burns on thier body that eventually infect and ice and fire start raining, once the rain is over a swarm of grasshoppers attacks the tribute, after the attack the night lasts a whole day and in this moment the effects of the mind control start to fade, tributes are now confused, some remember who they are, some are still "in character" and some are simply getting ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.

And when chaos spreads we have the last plague: death of the firstborns.

045.   a mysterious trail found in the woods .

This is actually perfect for the first part of my Brigadoon AU! (A musical about a mysterious village that only appears for one day every 100 years)

“How about that one?” Peeta gestures flippantly to a tree as they pass.

“Another yellow birch, asshole. Give me a challenge.”

This doesn’t deter him, “I thought birches were white?” He fights back a smile at the disgusted look his friend tosses his way.

“White birches are white,” Johanna says in a saccharine tone, “yellow birches are yellow, and you’re not going to believe this, but silver birches are silver!”

He’s no longer fighting the laughter. She’s too easy to rile.

“Don’t fuck with me Mellark,” Johanna says, finally cracking a smile.

She’d been at his apartment yesterday when he’d gotten home from work, informing him he had ten minutes to pack his bag; they were going camping. She did that sometimes, usually after a breakup, the shorter the notice, the worse the split.

The Mountains were Johanna’s refuge. She’d grown up in backwoods Appalachia and took pride in knowing every trail, plant, and animal residing on her side of the mountain.

Peeta, on the other hand, had only ever lived in the city, but these trips worked for both; Johanna needed the familiarity of the woods and Peeta the wonder.

They’re hiking in companionable silence when something flies overhead, its shadow crossing their path. Peeta spots the source first: an unfamiliar bird; large and black with speckled wings. It lands on a branch a dozen feet away and cocks its head, eyeing them curiously.

“I’ve got one for you, what the hell is that?”

Johanna squints, shielding her eyes from the spattered sunlight peeking through treetops, and frowns.

Silence stretches as they both stare at the bird, the bird staring back disconcertingly. Peeta opens his mouth to speak, but Johanna shushes him. “That’s a Mockingjay,” Johanna whispers.

“A mockingbird?”

“No, a mockingjay,” she hisses. “I used to read about them as a kid. They’re supposed to be good luck…or sometimes a bad omens, no one really agrees. But they should be extinct, If they were ever even real in the first place. They’re Appalachian folklore.”

“Bullshit,” Peeta says before releasing a laugh. This was classic Johanna, playing on his naïveté when it came to the wild, but she’s gone too far now; he won’t be falling for her Mothman antics. His laughter dies with a grunt as Johanna’s elbow connects with his stomach.

The bird, watching on, rights its head, opens its beak, and trills back his laughter as if it were music in exact tones and pacing.

The forest falls silent.

“Whoa,” Peeta looks from the bird to Johanna, eyes wide as saucers, then back to the bird.

There’s a moment of stunned silence before all hell breaks loose.

The bird turns its head towards an imperceivable call off in the distance and with a single whistle, it alights from the branch.

Johanna moves first, Peeta falling in step behind in silent agreement to follow the bird. Their pursuit soon sends them off the well trodden trail, crashing through foliage until the Mockingjay leads them to a laurel-lined path, just wide enough for them to pass single file, as if the bushes had politely retracted branches and roots just for their purpose. No sooner are they on even ground, than their view is obstructed by a settling fog, thickening with every step. A buzzing crescendos as they press on, following glimpses of tail feathers through the stifling haze and just when the fog’s at its thickest, there’s a light at the end of the laurels, and the buzzing ceases with a pop, the sound replaced with a woman’s voice mid song.

They emerge to a clearing at the base of a hill. The Mockingjay lands on a branch nearby, but Peeta only spares it a passing glance, because that’s when he sees her.

Arisu Ryohei (Alice in Borderland, 2020-present): i'm (impatiently) waiting for the new season to drop. but in the meantime i made a japanese sad boy playlist for my favorite character on the show.

Carmen Berzatto (The Bear, 2022-present): songs that i think carmie would listen to, if he even had time to listen to music.

Christopher Moltisanti (The Sopranos, 1999-2007): he's one of my favorite characters from the show bcs he's so interesting to me. like he's so clearly depressed from the beginning of the show but no one really takes him seriously.

Donnie Darko (Donnie Darko, 2001): mostly based off the therapy scene where the therapist asks donnie "do you feel alone right now?". it's got a bunch of songs from the 80's but also some more recent that i think match the vibe still.

Fiona Gallagher (Shameless, 2011-2021): my girl just gets overlooked all the time and the show literally never let her be happy. so i've made her a playlist bcs i appreciate her.

Jake Peralta (Brooklyn Nine Nine, 2013-2021): just a bunch of songs that i think jake would jam to plus songs that he likes in the actual show.

Jughead Jones (Riverdale, 2017-2023): yes i watch riverdale unironically. yes, i know it's bad. idc. jughead is my favorite character and so i've made a playlist with a bunch of songs that either i think he'd like or that he referenced on the show.

Laurie (Little Women, 2019): completely based off the scene where laurie confesses his crush on jo. so just a yearning/unrequited love playlist based off this quote.

Lou Bloom (Nightcrawler, 2014): based off the tense and synth heavy soundtrack from the movie. i included a few songs from the soundtrack but also added some other rock or synth-y songs.

Patrick Bateman (American Psycho, 2000): i laughed audibly in the movie when patrick was listening to walking on sunshine so i needed to make a playlist of other songs i think he would listen to, not because he liked them but just because he needs to "fit in".

Peeta Mellark (Hunger Games Series, 2012-2015): what a man. truly. this is just a bunch of songs that give off peeta vibes to me.

Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver, 1976): a playlist that i organized to play like a decent into madness, akin to travis' in the movie. this playlist includes some older songs from the likes of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash but also relatively more modern bands like Radiohead. In fact, i think this playlist is mostly Radiohead.

Troy Bolton (High School Musical Trilogy, 2006-2008): made a 2000's (mostly r&b playlist) that i feel like troy would like. this is solely made bcs i've seen this trilogy an ungodly amount of times and so i feel qualified to make these assumptions. also this all started bcs like 2-3 years a go i saw an edit for troy with the song because of you by neyo and i was never the same.

MCU/DC characters:

Bruce Wayne/Batman (The Batman, 2022): this is my favorite depiction of batman, solely because he's so unapologetically emo and a loser. so i made him a playlist that he can listen to while he applies his matte black jefree starr eye shadow in the bat cave or smth.

Miles Morales (The Spiderverse Film Series, 2018-present): the BEST spiderman that there ever was. i was forever changed when i saw across the spider verse and so i immediately put together a bunch of songs that i think miles would listen to while he swings between buildings.

Peter Parker (The Sam Raimi Trilogy, 2002-2007): toby's depiction of peter is one of my favs so it only felt right that i make him a playlist.

Peter Quill/Star Lord (2014-present): songs that peter would play on his walkman. most songs are canon to the movies and others are my own suggestions.

Sam Wilson (Captain America: Brave New World, 2025): this is MY captain america. idc what nobody says.

Tony Stark/Iron Man (2008-2019): my favorite marvel character actually. so it only makes sense that i would have to make him a rock playlist.

Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, 2022): based off the quote where she says "This is me being reasonable." bcs first off the way that elizabeth olsen delivered that line was perfect but also bcs it shows just how unhinged wanda became bcs of all her loss. so i made a sad/angry/desperate combo playlist for her.

tv shows:

Dance Academy (2010-2013): if you are unfamiliar with this show, it is an australian tv show that is set in an elite dance academy/high school.

"i just want so badly to be rid of you." - this was uttered by our main character tara while in an argument with her long time on again/off again boyfriend, christian. this line specifically has been stuck in my head for the better part of a decade and so i've made a playlist that displays the toxicity of their relationship and what led up to tara saying this.

"you all want me to fail." - this playlists is for abigail armstrong. she starts off the show being the bully/mean girl of the show but it's revealed later on that she's struggling with an ED and various other problems. she's a perfectionist as well so this playlist ig encapsulates all of that.

Glee (2009-2015): all my favorite glee covers in release order.

Mr. Robot (2015-2019): based off of elliot mostly and the type of music i think he'd like.

You (2018-2025): made this playlist for joe when season 4 came out and i'm still not done with season 5 (i'm trying to pace myself) so i may add some songs depending on what they play in the soundtrack.

movies:

Black Swan (2010): playlist for the main character nina and her decent into madness at the hands of her own crazed perfectionism

Bones and All (2022): just a bunch of songs that describe the feelings of the 2 main characters of the movie.

Challengers (2024): based off the crazy hype soundtrack from the movie. it includes some songs from the soundtrack but also other artists who make house/club music (i.e. Charli XCX and The Dare).

Girl, Interrupted (1999): playlist was made with daisy in mind but honestly the songs fit for everyone in the movie

The Great Gatsby (2013): based on the vibes of Gatsby's parties through his eyes as he's pining after daisy. some older songs from Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra but also more modern songs from Lorde or Lana Del Rey.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004): songs based on the dynamic/relationship of the main characters, clementine and joel.

Dead Poets Society (1989): just the general vibes of the movie. the music doesn't match the setting of the movie tho - so not much 50s music in here. but its for the vibes, trust.

Good Will Hunting (1997):

"it's not your fault." - this playlist was kind of just based on the quote from the movie. it's more of a daddy issues playlist than anything.

will hunting <3 - just some songs that i feel like will would play on his walkman or songs that describe him

Gone Girl (2014):

"i knew he wanted cool girl." - playlist based off of amy dunne and how it felt to be playing "cool girl" for so long

nick dunne - if u couldn't guess based off the name, this is just a playlist from the perspective of nick dunne in the movie

Fight Club (1999): songs that i believe reflect the Narrators mental state in the movie. as a super sleep deprived person (i slept for 3 hours last night), i feel i'm qualified to make this playlist.

The Holdovers (2023): playlist based off the found family vibes of the movie, using only songs from the time period (or before) and songs from the actual soundtrack.

The Hunt (2012): if ur unfamiliar, this movie is about a man who is falsely accused of being a pedophile and the fallout of that. so this playlist is a collection of songs that give off that devestating feeling of no one believing you.

The Iron Claw (2023): songs based off the movies ending - bittersweet.

Joker Duology (2019-2024):

"all i have are negative thoughts" - a playlist for arthur fleck in the first joker movie. has some songs from the soundtrack and other songs that i felt matched the time period and vibes.

folie à deux - based off of the relationship between harley and artuhr in joker 2. has a lot of older music like from fred astaire and frank sinatra. just bcs i felt it matched the vibes of the movie.

Lady Bird (2017): just a playlist based off the mother-daughter relationship in this movie. and also kind of just how it feels to be growing up and approaching graduation but just not wanting to.

May December (2023): this movie truly was not talked about as much as it should have been. but anyways this playlist is mostly based off of the character joe.

Mother (2020): this is a playlist inspired by this japanese movie about a boy and his relationship to his hot mess of a mother. basically a playlist for those with mommy issues

Pearl (2022): mostly based off the final monologue from pearl in the red dress, specifically when she says "i don't feel well." there are a few older songs but mostly they are modern.

Prisoners (2013): the movie starring jake gyllenhaal and hugh jackman. it's mostly based on jake's character, detective loki, but i think it reflects the entire vibe of the movie.

Rush Hour Trilogy (1998-2007): these movies were honestly so hilarious that i needed to make a playlist for lee and carter together. guess which songs represent each character.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010): a scott pilgrim inspired playlist that includes songs from the original soundtrack

Sound of Metal (2019): this is a movie about a drummer who loses his hearing and how he deals with it. this is just a bunch of mildly depressing rock songs.

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951): based mostly off of blanche's character. there's some older music (i.e. doris day, lesley gore, ella fitzgerald) but also some more modern music (i.e. mitski, fleetwood mac, ethel cain)

books:

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: a mostly instrumental playlist based on how the book made me feel. kind of nostalgic and melancholy, but also wistful? idk, just check it out.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov: playlist based on the disgusting "relationship" between lolita and humbert humbert.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Otessa Moshfegh: based on the narrator of the story who is so depressed and deeply unsatisfied with her life that she chooses to try and sleep for a whole year (almost uninterrupted) by taking copious amounts of sleeping pills. tbh i feel like doing this everyday so i had to make a playlist about it.

Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare: just a bunch of songs that tell the story of a tragic romance

untitled manuscript by Me: I started trying to write a book because I got super bored one day and these are some songs that i either mention by name or i feel like match the vibes of the book/main character (it's quite eclectic)

Mouthwashing (2024): saw an edit to this game with headlock by imogen heap and it was so perfect i had to find other songs that matched the eerie/unsettling vibes of the movie just as well.

Peeta Getting Relationship Advice from the other Victors

(After the infamous elevator scene in Catching Fire)

Peeta: I meant it as a compliment you know? I even said she was perfect! Perfect for me! And she still won’t talk to me! We’re going back into the arena in like two days! What the hell am I supposed to do to fix this? 

Johanna: There’s nothing to fix. You’ve got her right where you want her. Actually you could lean harder into the whole thing. I could sit in your lap at breakfast if it would help. 

Peeta: *(silently flabbergasted)*

Finnick: *laughs hysterically at the stunned face Peeta is making, and slings an arm over his shoulder* If you listen to Jo, you’ll be in the dog house for the rest of your life. Maybe even after it, too. 

Johanna: *snickers* Whatever bitches. Go ahead and waste your night moaning about your pathetic love lives. I’m gonna go steal Enobaria’s retainer. Bye!!!!! *walks out while giving the two of them a  sarcastic three finger mockingjay salute*

Finnick: *waves Johanna off before returning his attention to Peeta* Now, Peeta, I’m going to give you the same advice I’d give myself if I were in your position. It’s fool proof. Works every time. You cannot go wrong with this. 

Peeta: *nods head vigorously, and looks at Finnick expectantly* 

Finnick: *takes a deep breath and pauses for dramatic effect* So, here it is. The secret to getting back on your finace’s good side. When in doubt, eat her out.

Peeta: *thinking about all the platonic bed sharing, kissing, and whatnot he’s been subjected to for the past year with Katniss that never lead to anything more* 

Peeta: What else you got?

Finnick: Well, you could always just blow your previous fuck up out of the water with an even bigger one. Just make it stupid and romantic and she’ll have to forgive you.

I don't think we give Peeta enough credit for how delusion he was before and during the Quarter Quell. The girl he loves was personally visited by their country's dictator, threatened, and clearly the whole concept of the victors in the Quarter Quell was a response to her popularity with the rebellion. Snow was going to make sure Katniss was killed, if not by one of the twenty-two other victors, then by the arena. But Peeta if-it-weren't-for-the-baby Mellark said, "If we get gains and play up a fake pregnancy, then Katniss will walk out of that arena a two-time victor and live out her days with her family and become a mother." Like I know Peeta is symbolic of hope but that was just so far from being remotely possible from what he knew about it all.

And yet also....it comes true???

when i think of everlark, i think of a jewish concept called beshert. it’s a yiddish word that’s pretty hard to describe in english. there isn’t a one-to-one translation. it’s not only about romantic love, but (at least nowadays) it’s most often used in that context. sometimes people define it as “fate,” but i think that’s an oversimplification. what it really means is destiny, but understood through the framework of the choices we make. in other words, “this would've happened anyway.”

people describe their partner as “my beshert,” and in many ways that language boils down to “soulmate.” but beshert is less a guarantee that something will happen, that "fate'" will push people together or to make specific choices, and more that people making certain choices will lead to an outcome becoming inevitable. your soulmate is not your soulmate because an unascertainable force has guided you to each other, but because of all of the decisions big and small which shape you into people who are meant for each other.

and that, to me, is the story of katniss and peeta. their story is one of a lack of choice, and yet their love is defined not by the choices of the people around them, but by the choices they make.

that lack of choice becomes central to katniss and peeta before either of them are so much as a concept in their parents’ minds. yet, the simple fact that their parents made choices when they had no choices to make is what put their children in the same place at the same time. peeta is only possible because burdock saved otho’s life. katniss is only possible because asterid defied a future that otherwise seemed inevitable—a life with a boy from town, almost certainly otho himself. why otho chose to marry who he did, why burdock had the wherewithal to protect otho, why asterid had the courage to refuse her upbringing, we can only guess. we are left wondering: but for these actions, from a kick in the leg to fleeing home for love, would the eldest daughter of older parents and the youngest son of three boys have been in the position to choose each other at all?

there are generations of everdeens and marches and mellarks and bairds whose decisions big and small brought everlark to the brink of each other. but not one of those innumerable actions would mean anything had peeta not chosen to heed his father’s words on the first day of school. had the girl with two braids in a faded red dress not chosen to sing in music class. had katniss not run into the feast to save the life of the boy with the bread. had the sick, starving, bleeding loverboy not taken the palmful of berries from the girl on fire.

there’s plenty of luck, there, too. peeta points it out himself in the cave. but what is luck compared to choice? was it luck that cinna was there on time to make the choice to link them by their glowing hands? or that snow was full of enough resentment to fuel his choice to, even insincerely, allow the introduction of the two-victor rule? what of thresh’s integrity guiding his split-second choice to, against all reason, spare katniss’ life? or seneca crane’s short-sightedness, so uncharacteristic of a gamemaker, enabling his choice to allow them both to live? where does choice end, and luck begin? are they truly distinguishable?

prim’s reaping would not go awry if katniss did not volunteer, true. but if haymitch didn’t stumble forward, drawing the cameras before teetering off the stage, would effie be frazzled enough to pluck the first card off the top of the slips? a woman so committed to ritual, to protocol, known for her predictable words and consistent idiosyncrasies, shirks her process of reaching deep into the bowl. would she otherwise pull one of peeta’s other four slips? one of gale’s 40? or some other boy altogether? any are possible. none are probable. but the fact of the matter is that she does pull peeta’s name after this unsettling sequence of situations, and it is impossible to know whether that is a matter of luck or choice or neither or both.

so where, then, does that leave the boy with the bread, who is a whiz with fires, and the girl on fire, who owes her life to bread? who come from a place where the ritual binding two lovers for life is toasting bread over a fire? whose story together began with two burnt loaves? what, ultimately, makes them each other’s beshert?

the answer lies in the dandelion in the spring. the dandelion is their resilience of character against all odds. the manifestation of every choice they make when they otherwise have none. peeta, taking a beating to give up bread his family could not afford to spare, and learning that he could wield his kindness as defiance of a place where he himself saw nothing of the sort. katniss, in the midst of weakness of body and mind, finding the strength to grow both inside and outside the fence, to save herself and those who cannot help but depend on her. together, they discover the strength in their kindness, and so they discover themselves.

and that is what would have happened anyway. because in any universe exists a boy who grows kind from a lack of love at home, who needs strength to keep his kindness from turning him too soft. in any universe exists a girl who grows strong from supporting her family, and needs kindness to keep her strength from turning her too hard. someone who can tame a fire. someone who sees life in a loaf of bread.

neither choice nor destiny can claim such an inevitability in the absence of one another. and they, ultimately, are nothing without the love that binds them together. that is beshert.

both shinichi and haibara relate to sharks, they're self-admittedly drawn to blood and darkness. but why?

haibara was born into it, she didn't have a choice... and even though she's no longer a part of the black organization, she still carries the past with her.

shinichi on the other hand? he seeks it out. he directly confronts it, because he wants to defeat it. his unfaltering idealism is what pushes him to be a shark.

ran is very idealistic too, which i talk about here. so why doesn't she act like a shark?

"Finnick knows then what Haymitch and I know. About Peeta. Being truly, deep-down better than the rest of us." - Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire Chapter 19

the closest that gosho comes to spelling it out like this, is haibara's line about ran "i'm up against dolphin, one of the most loveable creatures in the ocean"

ran's defined by more than her virtuous nature, she's also unbelievably compassionate and sensitive. that's what makes her a dolphin.

her unmatched kindness is constantly displayed throughout the whole manga.

sometimes it irks shinichi:

sometimes it hurts him:

but most of the time it baffles and touches him:

now i'm going to say something that might be controversial: from what i've gathered, shinichi doesn't just appreciate ran's tender heart... he depends on it.

and i'm not saying that lightly, i'm aware that ran's caring nature affects a lot of dcmk characters - it's the reason why vermouth calls her an angel, why haibara refers to her as a dolphin and sees her as a sister figure, hell, it's the reason why kogoro's able to function most of the time.

but i'd still argue that nobody relies on it the way shinichi does, which brings me to the next symbol i want to analyze:

cherry blossom

flowers can represent a variety of concepts, depending on your source and in what context you use them for your writing. the same rule applies to cherry blossoms.

gosho's used it as symbol for justice in the past:

chapter 687

it's interesting to look at it through that lense, but i don't think that's what the cherry blossom represents for shinichi.

after doing some research, i came to the realization that cherry blossoms are widely believed to symbolize hope and the beginning of spring.

i think that interpretation makes a lot more sense for shinran. especially if we examine their first interaction:

chapter 924

shinichi shows ran his deduction skills to impress her... ironically he ends up impressing everyone but her. shinichi's condescension leads to a full-blown argument:

but then something completely unexpected happens... despite the fact that they don't know each other, despite the fact that shinichi insults ran, despite the fact that ran's completely put off by his arrogance, despite all of that... she offers him a cherry blossom and along with it the kindest smile he's ever seen:

and i just can't help feeling like ran's cherry blossom is symbolically very similar to suzanne's dandelion:

"I found him staring at me  from across the school yard. Our eyes met for only a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze, embarrassed, and that’s when I saw it. The first dandelion of the  year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spent  in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to  survive.  To this day, I can never shake the connection between this  boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the  dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. And more  than once, I have turned in the school hallway and caught his  eyes trained on me, only to quickly flit away." - Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games Chapter 3

"What I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that." and clearly, only ran can give that to shinichi...

let me further elaborate by revisiting the shark analogy:

the most beautiful dolphin in the sea sees a shark like him, calls him out on his bluff and instead of avoiding him, she actually welcomes him. ran shows him genuine affection, despite having so many reasons not to. how could he not fall for her?

for someone like shinichi, a cool shark who's able to recognize other predators in the sea from such a young age, seeing the innocence and warmth of a dolphin is pivotal for him, because it reminds him that there's so much more to life than constantly familiarizing himself with other sharks (in his childhood by reading and later by investigating them)... there's good too.

to summarize... shinichi sees a delicate cherry blossom, a gentle dolphin and holds on to her for dear life. he desperately clings to the promise of hope and spring, he depends on her affection and warmth. he needs ran, because without her winter would never end, he'd never escape to coldness of the sea, he'd freeze.

which explains why

a) he's so protective of her

b) ran's smile serves as a compass for shinichi throughout the whole story - while his mind is busy chasing sharks, shinichi's soul is persistently searching for the same smile that strummed his heartstrings all these years ago. which is why he immediately notices when ran's not okay (even though she's very skilled at concealing her pain) and why he always tries to make her feel better

and that's ultimately why

a) shinichi's keeping his identity a secret

b) he's so focused on getting his old body back

without ran, shinichi wouldn't have a constant inner conflict as conan, without her, he'd lack purpose and as a result, detective conan would be empty and lifeless.

ran's not just a love interest y'all...

she's the heart of the entire manga.
