So I was looking for tags on the cdrama "The Mermaid's Pearl" but could not find one. I wonder why is that?
Admittedly, this one is not on par with most dramas I watch. The rating on the internet is also low. I think I know why.
But if you're looking for cuteness and fluff with scenes that make you smile like hot chocolate and if you don't care much about actresses crying without tears (aka not so great acting) and bad directing skills and cuts, this could be just it.
On to how I found this. So I was looking for a quick cdrama to binge. When too tired afterwork, I have this guilty pleasure of reading through plots, watching the first few eps. Then when I get the gist, I'll leisurely fast forward or move eps looking for cute or fun scenes. You know, like living leisurely through the characters (for the sake of feeling things and pretending you got a life outside work and home).
Plot wise, tbh, I skipped a lot on this one. The plot itself is pretty simple. Mermaid girl (FL) left water to look for her kidnapped father. The ML is a rich young man who is known as a detective. He is also sick and they believe finding a mermaid will help cure him. She agreed because he has a lot of food (being rich and all) and he also might be able to help her find her dad.
Suspecting she's a mermaid (kinda hard not to) when she literally threw her pearls at him when they first met, he decided to keep her by his side.
So murder mysteries happen along the way and the guy has a fangirl/fiancee who wants to marry him. The emperor is also looking for a way to live abnormally long and orders people to go on expeditions to look for mermaids to aid that quest.
That is basically the whole gist of it.
Cuteness wise, can I just say I love and adore how the ML cares for the FL? Like, she's like a fluffy bunny and he's the master who takes care of her. They are so cute together and he also is sensitive to his own feelings so there's not much waiting. Their scenes make me laugh and just smile, thinking I want to be loved the way he loves her. : ) 🩷 Plus, it's comedy XD
At first he was telling her to stay away from him because she has no boundaries. But all too soon, he just came to accept how trusting and comfortable she is with him. He also gets jealous easily lol.
In this scene for instance, she literally just fell asleep using his hand as a pillow (like a cat) and he lets her. #Fluff
Acting wise, the ML actor, Shi An, is actually pretty good. It's just that the cuts and the scenes they were acting in are really like you're watching students' made film where quality is not the focus. So tbh, I blame the director and writer and producers more than the actors. Or maybe, that is indeed their goal? Idk. If it is then they succeeded.
Watch it if you dare, but as I said, a lot of things about it are pretty crappy. So don't expect too much.
But bottomline, I still very much enjoyed the very short cute fluff scenes between the ML and FL. :) I even replay them (just the cute scenes) when I need a pick-me-up. So it isn't so bad. At least not for me.

ok i was cooking up another hong lu analysis thing bc i noticed SEVERAL things in his base id art the other day and wanted to share with the class but they just dropped a new one in the canto V trailer and i have some stuff i wanna talk about that one:)
My Hong Lu knowledge and interpretation is very heavily influenced by reading Dream of the Red Chamber, which may not be the best because I don’t know how much Limbus will pull from the book because it’s Long as fuck but I think it’s given me a deeper knowledge of Hong Lu.
Keep in mind this ego is NOT out yet so i could be totally off base depending on what the full animation/corrosion/sin affinities are like and this is totally theorizing but I wanted to have a go at anyway!! And this got totally out of hand so reading is appreciated :)
One of the first things I noticed here is this Hong Lu seems VERY Bao-yu. We still don’t know for sure what Hong Lu is within the context of Red Chamber (i don’t think it’ll be straightforward considering how that book works) but it’s important to note!
He has this little hat on (this is the best pic i can get atm to show it’s not a fancy hair tie, unfortunately the footage we have rn is a little scuffed)
and Bao-yu is ALWAYS depicted with a hat like this.
This could just be because that’s the appropriate outfit for Chinese nobility (I unfortunately have little to no reference point here, feel free to correct me, but from some quick searches hats aren’t ubiquitous and ESPECIALLY not ones of this style.) I think it’s worth noting because it comes up in nearly all modern depictions of Bao-yu.
There’s also the pearl Hong Lu is wearing on his neck/chest area, which is where Bao-yu wears the magic jade he was born with. His jade is translated into Limbus as Hong Lu’s jade eye, but this plus his hat and the abno’s themes REALLY makes me think we are dealing with some Bao-Yu stuff here.
Speaking of the Abno’s themes, now i can actually go over them! All we have for Walking Pearl right now is the MD event (as well as general observation), but there’s a few things that are relevant.
Just based off design, the abnormality seems to be mostly about the precious (the pearl) and the filth (the muck) intermixing. which makes sense with the EGO being named “Effervescent Corrosion” and our holders being Hong Lu and Rodya.
There’s some symbolism around greed/wealth (the offspring filled muck desiring the pearl and fighting for which one will earn it? the muck tarnishing the pearl? ) and I think we should read into that because it’s Hong Lu and Rodya who have this one and they’re both very tied to their financial status. Those two sharing an ego makes me insane for a bunch of reasons but that’s probably for another analysis piece! But duality is REALLY important for those guys and that’s a theme they’re emphasizing here with both the pearl and muck within the clam.
There’s also some elements of shelter/protection/potentially entrapment with the clam’s shell which are HUGE for Hong Lu, especially with his egos so I think those may come up.
But mostly it’s about the mixing of the precious (likely “wealth” here) and the unsavory, which works very well with what we know of the Jia family. The design likely referencing Bao-yu and thematically dealing with the Jia family makes me think each of those individual readings are more likely because they’re deeply tied together!
And now onto the MD event! I did not write this in order so I may repeat stuff here but. I realized I had to cover the design first so here we are!
First thing that stuck out of me is this portion when you choose to sample some of the clam’s slime.
Sibling/family infighting is very Jia family. It reminds me a lot of this line base Hong Lu says.
You could take this a step further because the clam is something that would typically offer shelter from the rest of the world, and even though it protects, its offspring continue to kill and eat each other.
It seems fine, the offspring have this lovely shell for protection, and they have the precious pearl held within, but even as they are sheltered and wealthy. They are still getting killed and eaten by one another! Reminds me of someone I know:)
It reminds me of some bits in the later half of Red Chamber, where family members more obviously start acting behind each other’s backs or turning on each other, some even killing other family members.
Another part of the MD event that I got something out of was the beginning portion.
using specifically jade as the color for the seawater is a Hong Lu thing. I may be reaching with this bc it’s more than likely just flavor text BUT when taking this color with the fact that there’s nothing in the water it makes me think of an important scene in Red Chamber where Bao-Yu is described as an empty shell, so I wanted to mention it. We know Hong Lu has TONS of water motifs, especially when relating to his family (see his base ego)
The main reason I brought up this section of the MD event is because of the question brought up by the last portion.
If you take one thing from Dream Of The Red Chamber into your perception of Hong Lu as a character, it should be the themes of ambiguity, duality, and being between binaries. Because he sure as hell does that a lot!!! (and i’m not just talking about his gender) He is both genuinely curious and sheltered with an urge to learn as much as he can, but he also plays dumb frequently, backpedals and asks a lot of stupid questions on purpose to maintain others’ perceptions of him. He is CONSTANTLY walking the line between truth and illusion and it can be hard to tell which is which and precisely how much is fake or real, which is why I find him such an interesting character to think about.
Tangent about Hong Lu's characterization aside, it's really easy to read this line as about his family's perceptions of him.
Hong Lu (or rather, Bao-yu) can be read as being the source of the contamination in that he is the heir of the Jia family who is just an absolute fucking failure of everything you’d want in an heir for that time period.
The clam containing the filth can be read as Hong Lu’s lies (whether conscious lies or otherwise) to himself and others about the true “filth” of his family. Really good example of this is with another bit of window dialogue, but these lies and half truths come up quite a bit if you know where to look. (what happened to cohort of kin looking to stab each other in the back at every turn???)
We already have Hong Lu’s assorted water motifs (his feet make ripples on the water in his base id, land of illusion has so much water theming and shows the Jia mansion is surrounded by water) so I think this is a reasonable analysis to make :)
There’s some other sections to the MD event, but there’s nothing of note that triggered the Hong Lu sleeper agent in my brain & also this has gone on long enough that I wanna talk about predicting some stuff for the ego!
I am manifesting Gluttony/Gloom/Wrath for this ego!!
Gluttony and gloom are in the MD event’s skill check already and I think tie in nicely with the themes. Gluttony works with the offspring in the muck killing and eating each other and themes of greed with the pearl (plus the ego is primarily green and that’s a pretty good clue) and then gloom comes up a LOT with Hong Lu’s family (Liu Hong Lu, the only one that remarks on his jade eye, is also the only Hong Lu with gloom. land of illusion requires 5 gloom resources and also relates a lot to red chamber/his family) Gloom’s also generally a stand-in for water which exists here.
Wrath in Hong Lu generally manifests in him going “yeah, maybe my family was a little fucked up actually” internally, instead of manifesting as taking direct action about the fucked up things like it works for most other sinners, and acknowledging that his family was at least partially filth and killing and eating eachother (metaphorically. maybe literally) works for that
i am not an expert on sin analysis but i wanted to take a prediction bc it’s fun :)
I have a couple of predictions for corrosion and i’ll be real they are the main reason i wrote this thing because i LOVE when bad things happen to Hong Lu!!
Since this ego seems to be referencing Bao-yu so much i can pull stuff from Red Chamber too which makes it more fun :)
First one I came up with is Hong Lu taking the place of the pearl within the clam and getting locked in there! A bunch of his egos have to do with being controlled/trapped so i think it works and it also can work as a parallel for Bao-yu’s treatment by his family. Bao-yu’s name means precious jade, and he’s often treated more like his namesake than a person, heavily controlled and never allowed to leave the Jia mansion (or, in this case, the clam.) I just think it’d be fun!
My other concept has to do with more Red Chamber stuff, notably what happens when Bao-yu loses his jade. I’m not quite there yet in the text, but from what i’ve heard he becomes incredibly unstable and essentially loses his mind. This sets the Jia family’s downfall into even faster motion and from that point things get REALLY fucked up. Since the pearl here parallels Bao-yu’s jade, I think having a reference to that part of the book would be really fucking crazy for all 5 people who have read 1800+ pages of red chanber to get to chapter 94 where he loses that thing. Also i just want to see Hong Lu lose his mind i KNOW it would be terrifying and chilling. but they may be saving that for his distortion (manifesting)
In my skimming Red Chamber table of contents to find when Bao-yu loses his jade i just found a chapter where Bao-yu’s father admires a pearl but we will just ignore that for now bc this has taken long enough to type already and that is several chapters off. but there may be more analysis when this thing actually comes out!
Thank you for reading this far!! I hope you enjoyed me looking far too deep into an unreleased ego we know next to nothing about for fun! this took WAY longer than expected to type out but i’m glad I did because I loveee telling people about Hong Lu!
There is a very real chance very little of my analysis and prediction is reflected in canon BUT please remember that truth becomes fiction when the fiction’s true and even if this doesn’t turn out to be correct now u know a little more about Hong Lu and the themes he plays with :)

Black Pearls
A/N: I did the thing. Just a disclaimer I know Mami Wata is more of a water spirit than a demon. and I am just a translator for Yucatec Mayan so take it with a grain of salt. But if y'all don't like that please let me know because I'm not trying to be mean.
Summary: Every child in Wakanda knows about the water demon. The demon takes misbehaving children and forces them to open thousands of clams. Okoye being a curious child went into the cave, and instead of being greeted water demon, she meet a strange blue boy.
There are many folktales that are woven in Wakanda. A young Okoye loved and valued each story that was passed down to her. To the young girl, it felt like she was learning more about her ancestors which gave young girl strength. But there was one story that gave Okoye nightmares Mami Wata.
The water demon.
“You don’t want Mami Wata to get you,” Her uncle told her one day when she walking far too close to the river’s edge. That scared Okoye into not walking too close to the rivers. Every child in Wakanda knows about the deadly water demon that would drag misbehaving children into her underwater cave and make them open millions of clams to find the water demon’s missing eye.
“Wait why does she have a missing eye?” Nakia asked. Ayo and Okoye were telling the girl about the Mami Wata. The group was making their way to school.
“That’s just an old wive’s tail,” Okoye said to Nakia, who was a little shaken about Mami Wata. Ayo shook her head as her beads shook, “Nuh-huh. She’s real and I know where she lives.”
“Sh-she’s r-real?” Nakia repeated as she wrapped herself around Okoye’s body with bao constrictors’ strength.
Ayo nodded, “Yes, and she appears when you say her name three times.”
“No, she’s not,” Okoye repeated freeing herself from Nakia’s grip. “Ayo just likes to spin tall tales.”
“Fine if you think I’m lying. Then I double dare you!” Ayo exclaimed stopping Okoye in her tracks. “Aneka told me that Mami Wata lives in the creepy crave not even crocodiles would sleep there.”
“Not the double dare,” Nakia mumbled as she watch the pair argue. Okoye eyes Ayo, “It sounds to me like you’re scared.”
Ayo puffed up her chest folding her arms, “No I’m not scared. I just want proof that I am right like always.”
“Well then you go,” Okoye said to her. Ayo shook her head, “That’s not how a dare works.”
Before Okoye could make her argument know the school bell rang, “Fine, I’ll go. Once I come back I’ll show you that is just a stupid wise tale.”
During the whole day, Okoye felt the dread that sunk like a heavy stone in her stomach. She wished she could take back on doing this stupid dare. Once the final bell rang Okoye knew it was time. She walked to the entrance like a death march, her eyes saw Ayo standing there with a smirk on her face. Tiny Nakia looked concerned for her friend, one thing about Okoye she doesn’t give up. Not even for a dare; the trio walked to the outskirt of the river where Mami Wata resides in.
“Well,” Ayo announced crossing her arms. Nakia put her hands over her eyes as if it would stop the dare.“Go on.”
Okoye pressed her lips as she walked down the slope. She walked past the scattered trees that lined up on the water’s edge, Okoye’s feet stopped when she made it to the entrance of the cave. Mami Wata’s cave, she thought as she balled up her fist. If she was going to be the future head of the Dora Mija she couldn’t be scared of some childish tale. She was nine years old now!
Once she stepped into the stone floor of the cave. She smelt the stale air as she ran her hands across the bumpy sharp stone. In the middle of the humidity cave was water, Okoye came close to it. She could see her reflection, the young girl took a deep breath.
All I have to do is say Mami Wata three times and run, Okoye said to herself. She was the fastest runner in her class and now it was time to put it to good use.
“Mami Wata,” She said. Something in the young girl’s spirit felt like something wasn’t right, she couldn’t explain it. Okoye chest tighten but she pressed on. The young girl refused to be seen as a coward, “Mami Wata.”
“Ma-” Before Okoye could say the last word, she looked closer at her reflection in the water. Why does it look so different? As Okoye lend closer a creature popped his head out of the water.
“Ah!” Okoye screamed causing her to fall backward. Okoye quickly scrambled to get up, she had to make a run now before Mami Wata takes her. As she tried to make a break for it a cold clammy hand took her wrist, “No, let go!”
“Juntéen! Pa'atik,” The water demon spoke. Okoye finally opens her eyes to see not a creature but a boy.
“W-who are you? And why are you blue?” Okoye shouted at the boy.”D-did Mami Wata force you to open clams?”
The boy only tilted his head to the side, before giving her a grin. Okoye no longer scared was now annoyed with the boy, “Hello, I just asked you a question.”
“Jach chichanech utia'al junp'éel k'iin. Namora nojoch asab u teech.,” the blue boy spoke as sat back down into the water. Okoye leads over the rocky side to watch her new friend.
“Huh?” Okoye asked. “No, you don’t understand Wakandian. I definitely don’t speak yours.”
The boy continued to look at Okoye, unblinking. This boy is weird, Okoye thought. Okoye shook her head, Well on the bright side Mami Wata isn’t real. So I guess I can go home. The young girl slides off the rock as her feet meet with the ground, “Bye.”
The blue boy launched out of the water standing in front of the girl. He touched Okoye’s hands as if he didn’t want to let the young girl go. His wet hair clung to his forehead, “K'a'abet a beel le k'iino'?”
“OKOYE,” Ayo’s screamed out to her. Causing the pair to split apart Okoye quickly turned her head to the entrance of the cave, “YOU BETTER NOT BE DEAD! HURRY UP AND COME OUT ALREADY!”
Okoye let go of the boy’s hand and quickly ran away from the strange blue boy.
Translation:
K'a'abet a beel le k'iino'? : You must be the sun
Juntéen! Pa'atik,: Hey! wait
Jach chichanech utia'al junp'éel k'iin. Namora nojoch asab u teech.: You are too small to be a sun. Namora is bigger than you.

(asktheisle) Nat: "I haven't had a bubble tea in what feels like ages, bit of an interesting spot to open a shop is it?"
They paused and looked at the surroundings with curiosity before turning back to the Polteageist with a polite smile.
"Oh! Right, the order-is it possible to get a brown sugar tea with boba pearls? A bao too, if it isn't much trouble!"
Hibiscus takes a moment to calm down and collect herself. "Sorry for getting so excited," the Polteageist apologizes, looking around. "I actually get a quite a few customers here! These woods may look empty, but all sorts of Pokèmon live here! You just need to know where to look- most hide when humans like you are around, you see. That's actually part of why I set up my shop around here; there's not many stores and other stuff like that outside of Bellonlea, and many Pokèmon avoid it out of fear of getting caught- so now the Pokemon living in the wood can treat themselves to a nice cup of bubble tea without having to worry about that, you know?"
"Oh dear- sorry, I was rambling again," Hibiscus sheepishly rubs the back of her head with an arm. "Here's your order!" The Polteageist stretches two of her arms out to Nat, giving them the tea and bao they had ordered. Once that was taken care of, Hibiscus turned to Destino to address them.
"Poison? I can assure you, nothing we sell here is poisoned! That's just ridiculous...." the Polteageist seems midly offended at the Absol's suggestion. "As for a recommendation, my own personal favorite is the Rawst Tea with Zeckrom Boba Pearls! So, perhaps try that?"

Hi Anon! Apologies this took a bit, i got distracted with some projects and didn't have the energy to answer this right away, hopefully you're still here to see this :)
First off, Bao-yu is Hong Lu's book equivalent. I don't know if you already knew this, but I made the diagram with the assumption people knew this and it kind of blew up way bigger than intended on both here and twitter 😅
The debt of tears is a really big concept in Red Chamber surrounding the fates of Bao-yu and Dai-yu. Bao-yu was originally a piece of jade that the goddess was using to create the sky, but he ended up unused and cast onto the earth. From there, he ended up finding the Crimson Pearl Flower, which he watered every day. Eventually, the flower ended up transforming into a fairy (Dai-yu) due to the care with which he watered her. Dai-yu thinks on how she could repay him for this and settles on “The only way in which I could perhaps repay him would be with the tears shed during the whole of a mortal lifetime if he and I were ever to be reborn as humans in the world below.”
And wouldn't you believe it! They do end up reincarnated as humans in the world below. Bao-yu and Dai-yu are very close throughout their mortal lives, but the debt of tears comes back into the picture during Bao-yu's wedding. He believes he is getting married to Dai-yu as his family told him (because he wouldn't agree to marriage otherwise), but it isn't until the wedding starts he discovers this isn't the case and the family chose for him to marry someone else with a higher social standing. Dai-yu thinks Bao-yu was willingly deceiving her with this and is so distraught about it that she cries until she dies (she is very sickly pretty much constantly and this book is written like a soap opera) which fulfills the Debt of Tears.
As you can imagine, this really messes up Bao-yu. His mental state degrades throughout the book, but that's the nail in the coffin for it all. The debt of tears and the wedding is the emotional climax of the book, and I cannot imagine limbus's adaptation of the story not doing something with it.
The thing about cutting Bao-yu open happens in a dream, and is also related to the debt of tears/ Bao-yu and Dai-yu's relationship actually!
It happens in a dream Dai-yu has in chapter 82 where she's chosen as a second wife for a man and has to leave the Jias. She does Not Want this at all and is unable to do anything in order to stop it. Eventually, she finds Bao-yu and this scene plays out (this next section is words taken directly from the book. because im really normal about it. theres a tldr at the bottom if you aren't reading all that) :
Suddenly she thought: ‘Why haven’t I seen Bao-yu today? He might still know of a way out.’ And as the thought entered her mind, she looked up and sure enough, there, standing right in front of her, all laughter and smiles, was Bao-yu himself. ‘My warmest congratulations, coz!’ This was too much for Dai-yu. Her last vestige of maidenly reserve vanished. She clutched hold of him and cried out: ‘Now I know how heartless and cruel you really are, Bao-yu!’ ‘No, you are wrong,’ he replied. ‘But if you have a husband to go to, then we must go our separate ways.’ Dai-yu listened in despair as this, her very last hope, was taken from her. Clinging to him helplessly, she gave a feverish cry: ‘Oh Bao! I’ve no separate way to go! How could you say such a thing!’ ‘If you don’t want to go, then stay here,’ he replied calmly. ‘You were originally engaged to me. That’s why you came to live here. Has it never occurred to you how specially I’ve always treated you? Haven’t you noticed?’ Suddenly it all seemed clear. She really was engaged to Bao-yu after all. Of course she was! In an instant her despair changed to joy. ‘My mind is made up once and for ever! But you must give me the word. Am I to go? Or am I to stay?’ ‘I’ve told you, stay here with me. If you still don’t trust me, look at my heart.’ With these words he took out a small knife and brought it down across his chest. Blood came spurting out. Terrified out of her wits, Dai-yu tried to staunch the flow with her hand, crying out: ‘How could you? You should have killed me first!’ ‘Don’t worry,’ said Bao-yu. ‘I’m going to show you my heart.’ He fumbled about inside the gaping flesh, while Dai-yu, shaking convulsively, afraid someone might burst in on them at any moment, pressed him to her tightly and wept bitterly. ‘Oh no!’ said Bao-yu. ‘It’s not there any more! My time has come!’ His eyes flickered and he fell with a dull thud to the floor.
tl;dr Bao-yu reassures Dai-yu that there's a way out of her new engagement because she was originally brought to the jia house to be engaged to Bao-yu. Dai-yu is unsure of this and Bao-yu decides to show her his heart to convince her he's telling the truth. he does this by physically cutting his chest open to pull out his heart, but he lacks a heart within his chest to find.
Red Chamber isn't free of violence by any means, but this scene always fucking Got me. its so shocking out of nowhere and its such a potent image, i've drawn something akin to it before because it Got Me so much.
I brought it up in the diagram because his lack of heart reminded me of how the gloom peccatuli contain organs within them, but do not appear to be living organisms, or play part in biological activities. We know Hong Lu has his jade eye, which is probably either prosthetic or a Secret Third (non-normal human eye) Thing, so what's to say he doesn't have other inhuman oddities to him.
It also connects "truth" to physical exposure, in this case exposure not stopping at the skin and going deeper to the organ level. The intertwining of truth and fiction is a HUGE thing in red chamber and this would be really cool if the hypothetical Hong Lu distortion had elements from the gloom peccatulum for this as well (false organs exposed through transparent skin would be both true and false. Really cool)
There's also the concept of "seeing with the eyes" versus "seeing with the heart" which would go crazy when combining all of this. I don't think i can go into that there but tldr is this quote from the little prince
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
And with Hong Lu's eye connection... do you see what im putting down

bao & paisley's wedding!
introducing bao tran, li's (paisley's bff) brother & now, paisley's hubby :)
background story: li & paisley have known each other for decades since they were neighbours. though paisley would (ocassionally) come over to li's place, bao & paisley never really got in touch (other than saying hi to e/o.) however, the 3 of them lived together in an apartment as teens & paisley only started seeing bao after her first relationship (w/c also ended on bad terms.) she saw bao as her safe place & they started dating! li was surprised to say the least (as they kept their relationship in the dark for a little while) but she was extremely supportive of their relationship.
