JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD will be a vice-presidential running mate for former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo in contesting the presidential election on Valentine’s Day next year. 

Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairwoman of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), made the announcement during a media event held at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday (Oct 18).

"He is a qualified intellectual," she said, referring to Mr Mahfud as he and Mr Pranowo entered the venue together.

"He is an honest and brave person who always fights for the rights of the people. The pairing of Mr Ganjar and Mr Mahfud will enrich this country's democracy."

Commenting on his pairing with Mr Pranowo, Mr Mahfud said: “I know exactly that Mr Ganjar is a popular and brave leader. He dares to correct wrongdoings, dares to accept criticism, and dares to fight for political values that he believes in.”

Meanwhile, Mr Pranowo asked for the support of the Indonesian people. 

"We are confident that with this shared spirit, we will soon achieve a much better future and life for the entire Indonesian nation," he said.

The announcement, which analysts whom CNA spoke to say is a strategic move, comes a day before the election commission opens registration for presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

So far, three people have announced their interest to run as president. 

Apart from Mr Pranowo, Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto has expressed his intention to run for the third time.

He is endorsed by his party Gerindra, the country’s third-biggest political party, as well as the country’s second-biggest political party Golkar and several others. 

Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan, backed by the country’s fourth biggest party Nasdem, and chairman of PKB Muhaimin Iskandar also declared their eagerness to run as president and vice-president. 

The pair said they will register at the election commission on Thursday, while Mr Subianto has yet to announce his running mate.

I was raised in the People of Destiny cult (later renamed, and more well-known as, Sovereign Grace Ministries, now Sovereign Grace Churches).

The valorization of martyrdom and The End Times was so ubiquitous it was ambient noise. We stood in the church lobby theorizing about who the antichrist would be, we argued about whether Jesus would rapture us all before, after, or during the Tribulation Period where Satan would be given free reign over the earth. There was a strong Christian Zionist fixation on Israel as the final battleground and capital of the coming Messianic Age. But the one thing we were all certain of was is that we were in the End Times, that we were not of this world and couldn’t get too attached to our lives here.

We were raised to believe our sin nature made us undeserving of life, that we deserved death and eternal conscious torture.

My parents read us the Jesus Freaks books (a series by Christian Rap group DC Talk about martyrs). I spent “devotional time” reading Fox’s Book of Martyrs. We had guest speakers from Voice of the Martyrs, their pamphlets were often stocked in our church’s information center. We grew up with our dad listening to right wing talk radio and making us listen to songs about how the Godless atheists were outlawing Christianity in America, that we could all become martyrs soon.

The group’s theology was damaging & traumatic in a lot of other ways that contributed to the suicidality I have continued to struggle with for the rest of my life. For a long time I did not believe I would live past 20. There are times when the idea of giving my death meaning by using public suicide to make a political statement has appealed to me.

So now, seeing so many social media posts glorifying the suicide of a US Airman this week, I have been furious. Reading his social media posts, I recognize so much about the way I was raised in his all-or-nothing, black-or-white mindset, the valorization of death-seeking & martyrdom, and the apocalyptic fire-and-brimstone imagery of self-immolation. The moment I saw people I followed celebrating his self-immolation, I said to myself “this feels like a cult”

So when I learned he was raised in a cult too, nothing could have made more sense to me. His political orientation may have changed, but his mindset did not—it was no less extreme or cult-like.

I’ve talked about so many of the reasons this response from the broader left scares me, including how it’s laundering that airman’s antisemitic beliefs, but I cannot think of anything that would hit me in a more personal place than this specific response to this specific situation has.

When I see the images, I think: that could have been me. That scares me, and what scares me more is that so many prominent people are overwhelmingly sending the message to people like me that there is nothing else we can do that would have a more meaningful impact than killing ourselves for the cause.

I do not believe that. I will not even entertain it. And having to see his death over and over and over again, to argue against people who are treating this like an intellectual/moral exercise or a valid debate we all have to consider has been immensely triggering and fills me with a rage I rarely feel. It’s unconscionable that we are even putting self-harm on the table, and that pushing back against that is somehow controversial.

There is hope. Our lives do have meaning. There are far more effective means of fighting injustice. And the world is a better place for having you in it. Don’t fall into believing this is a way to give life purpose.

i usually dont like the presidents of my country but there's one that i used to be fond of but now has a mixed view currently.

This is Abdurrahman wahid or better known as Gus dur in my country, Indonesia and well his presidency only lasted for a bout 1 year, 276 days due to being impeached but though his presidency was shorted, he atleast did something and That he abolished Abolished all remaining legal discrimination against Chinese Indonesians and also attempted to reform the military which would lead to his downfall and you can see him as this hero" which if you only focused on that of his presidency, yeah but there's more and the truth is: his downfall was caused by a mixture of himself and the circumstances of his presidency and that because he didnt actually won the presidency as though the PDI-P won the most seats in the 1999 legistlative election and its leader (megawati sukarnoputri) was expected to be president, but after some backroom talkings (especially an islamist allience headed by amien rais supporting him), the 1999 indonesian presidential election was won by gus dur and the allience (more specifically amien rais) that backed him turned against him due to his attempts to establish relations with isreael and other stuff, he also Changed his cabinets too much with little reason and was erratic which wasnt great for a country that at point was suffering from economic downturn, religius conflicts and yeah, i used to be very fond of him but now just has a mixed opinion.

10 tahun diatur dan dikelola oleh kader PDI-P mengajarkan bahwa yang terlihat dekat dengan rakyat kecil saat masa kampanye Pemilu belum tentu berpihak pada rakyat kecil saat menjabat. Kader PDI-P itupun bagi-bagi kursi menteri menjinakkan mantan lawan. Di Senayan, setelah jadi mayoritas di kursi DPR, PDI-P membuat aturan dan merevisi aturan secara serampangan. Hasilnya, bisa kita lihat sendiri: KPK diperlemah dan diobok-obok, bayangkan Ketua KPK kok malah jadi tersangka pemerasan?? Lalu, dengan bantuan Paman, ponakan bisa jadi calon wakil presiden. Negara hukum macam apa yang bisa melenturkan aturan untuk anak penguasa? Penanganan COVID kacau balau.
