Week 12: Image Production Assignment

For week 12 I decided to revisit Papakura Central Park and focus on the places that people spend most time in. This park contains a few historical monuments mainly the old Central School of Papakura which now serves for community use, and the Memorial Peace tree to commemorate the ending of world war one (Auckland Council, Heritage Unit, 2017).

【PBP2023実走レポート⑨】PC7：カレ＝プルゲール～PC8：ルデアック

こんにちは、ノブです。 ブルベの最高峰、パリブレストパリに参加してきました。今回から復路編。PBP2023の実走レポート⑨では、PC7：カレ＝プルゲールからPC8：ルデアックまでの85kmの様子をまとめています。 PC7(697km地点)：カレ＝プルゲールを出発 カレ＝プルゲールを14時過ぎに出発。出口に向かう通路には、国旗の書かれた看板がずらっと並べられていました。仮にこれが参加国だとすれば、世界中から自転車乗りが集まっているわけですから、その規模に改めて驚くとともに、その中に日本があることが少し誇らしくなります。 滞在時間は1時間ちょっと。ここのボトルネックはレストランですね。とにかく混んでいました。それに食欲が湧かず、椅子に座ったまま少しぼんやりとしていた気がします。 次の目的地は85km先のルデアック。ここも獲得標高が1,000m以上になるアップダウンの多い区間です。往…

And ironically enough, the Northeast passage is actually regularly used for Europe–Asia transports. The difference to the Northwest Passage is that Russia has a very good icebreaker fleet that can guarantee safe passage, whereas both Canada and the USA have a tiny number of rubbish icebreakers.

Also, building a ship that can do the Northwest Passage without icebreaker assistance is entirely possible, it was done already in the 1960s (the Esso tanker Manhattan). Although considering how bad icebreakers are sailing in open water, the sensible solution would be to build container ships reinforced enough to sail with icebreaker assistance, and then a bunch of icebreakers of similar capacity to the big Russian ones.

However, there may also lay the issue: the current fleets of container ships have been built extremely cheap, from minimal-thickness materials for short lifespand. Unless the Northwest passage is entirely ice free as a result of climate change, they can't go there even with icebreaker assistance. So it may be cheaper overall for the container operators to keep doing as they do than invest in a bunch of new ships built to much higher standard (even PC7 ice class would be much more expensive than the current standards, let alone something built to the higher classes).

we should probably expect a huge city on the Hudson bay (the big non-lakes bit of water in Canada) when the Northwest passage opens up in a few decades, right?
