These are 10 of my favorite audios from 2000 or before. I feel like a lot of the vintage recordings are so lovely, but often overlooked for the newer audios. Which is understandable, as many of the casts from 1990-2000 are relatively unknown. So let’s show them a little love!

The cast, dates, and my little thoughts on why they’re great are below!

Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Steve Barton, Nicholas Wyman, Cris Groenendaal, Judy Kaye, Leila Martin, David Romano, Elisa Heinsohn February 28, 1988; Broadway I think we can all figure out why this one is here. Anything of the original cast is a treasure to me. Besides that though, I think Sarah sounds really nice here and gives a bit more emotion than you get on the cast recording. Most of the time people who don't care for Sarah judge her more on the OLCR and some YouTube clips. I think she sounded even better as time went on. And of course the rest of the cast is wonderful. I think a must-listen!

Dave Willetts, Jan Hartley-Morris, Michael Ball, Maria Moll, Michael N Harbour, David Firth, Mary Millar, John Aron July 15, 1988; London I have been told this is a soundboard, which sounds very possible. But due to age and probably wear and tear/downloads it isn't the best quality. Still, has a wonderful cast. Jan is the standout for me and yet she is definitely the least known out of the trio. Her voice is absolutely divine. Dave was wonderful in reminding you of Michael but also making his Phantom unique. And Michael seems like he was a wonderful Raoul.

Colm Wilkinson, Susan Cuthbert, Byron Nease, Paul Massel, Gregory Cross, Lyse Guerin, Kristine Marie Guiguet, Peter Cormican, Donna Rubin March 17, 1991; Toronto, Canada Never been a huge fan of Colm, but especially now since Rebecca Caine's story. However, this is the only audio of Susan Cuthbert, who I think sounds lovely and is so overlooked. Rest of the company is great as well.

Mark Jacoby, Karen Culliver, Hugh Panaro, Paul Laureano, Jeff Keller, Patrice Pickering, Marilyn Caskey, Gary Rideout, Catherine Ulyssies August 1992; Broadway Act 1 is a soundboard, Act 2 is a very good audience recording. I think the entire trio is absolutely lovely. Also, baby Hugh!

Thomas James O'Leary, Sandra Joseph, Gary Mauer, Teressa Eldh, Frederick Herenges, George Lee Andrews, Patrice Pickering, Jeff Keller, Gerdalyn Del Carso February 3, 1998; Broadway Posting especially for Thomas. Pretty unknown Phantom nowadays, but I have always liked him. Sandra vocally is a bit of a hit or miss sometimes for me, but I tend to like her more in her early days. And Gary as Raoul! Such a lovely voice.

Glyn Kerslake, Jill Washington, Chris Harley, Anthony Raffell, Leo Andrews, Jasna Ivir, Heather Jackson, David Hillman, Amanda Light March 6, 1999; London I loved Glyn's voice the first time I heard it. Another relatively unknown Phantom. Jill has a wonderful and lush voice.

Ted Keegan, Rebecca Pitcher, Richard Todd Adams April 17, 1999; Norfolk Great clear sounding audio. Ted Keegan is one of my favorite Phantom's and he is still understudying the role on Broadway today! I saw him in 2019 and he very much gives me Hugh Panaro vibes vocally and is a great mix of old school Phantom in the modern day. Vocally, Rebecca doesn't always impress me but her earlier years I like much more. So she sounds pretty good here.

Hugh Panaro, Adrienne McEwan, Gary Mauer June 11, 1999; Broadway Adrienne is honestly one of my favorites because she has a very unique voice. Having been in the show for so long and part of 2 anniversaries, I am always surprised she isn't better known. Also, Hugh in his first Phantom run! And another Gary as Raoul audio.

Mike Sterling, Charlotte Page, Gartor Thor Cortez July 31, 1999; London If I could time travel, this would be one of the casts I would see. Mike vocally seems like he was ahead of his time in a sense. He reminds me a bit of Tim Howar. Charlotte has a stunning operatic voice. Also features Gardar Thor Cortes as Raoul! Not sure why, but he spelled his name different back then. Love his voice as well.

I’m sorry if you’ve answered this before, but I was wondering if you have a list of actors who have played both The Phantom and Raoul in their lifetime? I can only think of a few: Steve Barton, Ramin Karimloo, Bronson Norris Murphy and Jeremy Stolle.

Honestly, there’s a ton, and that’s me not counting the LND Phantoms (I think of LND as a separate show from POTO) or people who performed one of the roles in regional productions (Michael Cormick) or in a non-POTO show (Michael Xavier, Prince of Broadway). To list just a few examples:

And a greater, more sinister enemy is revealed in the trippiest issue of North Bend yet.    You know the issue is going to be something when it opens up the way that this one does.  He was dosed exceptionally well to be left in that condition where he was and whether that dream is a memory and the beginning of the dream was triggered to take him to the memories we see is a huge mystery for now.  Though I will say this, I've never seen Brendan look as hot as he does this issue and that’s just a side note.  I’m really rather impressed with the whole flow of the book and how we see the segues from one part to the next is incredibly well handled.      I’m very much enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job in bringing us their personalities.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages navigating the past and the present I'm really impressed with how we see everything come to life.    I really appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story begin to emerge and grow.  I also like how the layers open up these avenues to be explored.  Some of these happen in these pages, some engage the reader and threads go off page and into the readers’ head.  This adds some wonderful depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably rendered.      I’m completely digging the interiors here.  The linework is clean, crisp and strong while the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail within the work is extraordinary!  That we see backgrounds utilised as we do to enhance and expand the moments is incredibly well handled and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is extremely well rendered.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a sensational eye for how colour works.  The sepia tones for the past and the brush strokes for the army pattern really highlight the talent we see. ​    I will say I was a little disappointed in not seeing his shadowy junk while he was running, what is he a Ken Doll?  Oh his home life isn’t so ring around the rosey now is it, but then a lot of guys after the military end up going home to cause broken homes simply because we don’t give them enough help to acclimate to the non war world.  This is a great first issue and if you didn’t read the first arc that’s okay this one allows you to jump on board and follow along easily enough.  This has some strong interesting writing and some trippy and solid characterisation with some extremely well rendered interiors.  All this makes it a highly recommended read.

 Thanks to long time customer and friend Doug Stafford for lending his copies of this Marvel event for me to read. I didn't read them as they hit the racks because I was tired of these big multi-crossover stories that ultimately don't mean much. I realised as soon as I found out that evil Captain America was created by a sentient Cosmic Cube named Kobik, who appears as a little girl, that everything would be back to "normal" at the end and I was right. I've read a lot of good versus evil stories and I needed something different to keep me engaged and there wasn't much here that did that. Yes, I read the whole thing but that's the completist in me. I cannot put aside something that I start without finishing it and so I stuck with this to find out how evil Steve was defeated. My favourite character was Ant-Man and I think I would enjoy a solo Ant-Man book written by Nick Spencer. The art in issue #1 was nice but it looked like Steve McNiven (pencils) and Jay Leisten (inks) were tired doing issue #10. The in between issues had art that varied from acceptable to hard on my eyes. This is worth reading if you like to spot Marvel heroes and villains but otherwise it's not that important in the grand scheme of things in the Marvel U.

 Champions #12 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This is a good old fashioned super heroes versus super villain fight as Psycho-Man pays a visit from the Microverse. He's got a simple power so there's no need to explain everything about him to new fans who have never heard of the Micronauts. What Mark does to make these stories far more interesting is how he lets us see these heroes interact as friends and team mates. I love this young heroes book.

 Jessica Jones #12 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos & Javier Pulido (art) Matt Hollingsworth & Javier Pulido (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Jessica closes the case for Maria Hill and the person who put out the hit on Maria is revealed. It's not just good enough to find out who the bad guy is but Brian lets us in on why Maria was targeted and it's a really good twist. The on deck villain will make the next story arc super tense.

 Generations: Iron Man & Ironheart #1 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Marco Rudy, Szymon Kudranski & Nico Leon (pencils) Szymon Kudranski, Will Sliney, Scott Koblish & Nico Leon (inks) Marco Rudy, Dean White & Paul Mounts (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). It's Riri Williams' turn to have an adventure with her progenitor to warm up potential new fans for her comic book. There are teasers in this story that may sway fans to give the Invincible Iron Man series a try. The stable of artists used in this one shot may not appeal to some but the writing is solid.

 Dastardly & Muttley #1 - Garth Ennis (writer) Mauricet (art) John Kalisz (colours) Rob Steen (letters). The art in this new 6-issue mini is really good for this updated comic book adaptation of an old Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon show. I bet you a lot of folks will not have a clue about the two aviators and I barely twigged to the title until I started reading. I can still hear Muttley's muffled laugh in my head but here he has a voice. It's nice to see Garth's humorous side back on the racks in a book that isn't only for mature readers. If you liked the Flintstones comic book, you'll like this too.

 Kingsman: The Red Diamond #1 - Rob Williams (writer) Simon Fraser (art) Gary Caldwell (colours) Peter Doherty (letters). There's a new Kingsman movie coming out later this month and this new 6-issue mini should get you primed for it. We are introduced to Eggsy, the young British super spy and the new villain the Red Diamond. I liked the recent Nick Fury mini and this one is just as good. Pick it up for some over the top escapism.

 Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Marco Checchetto (art) Andres Mossa (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I don't get why this Storm Trooper is getting a 4-issue mini since she was only in The Force Awakens briefly. Maybe there's more to her story and they'll reveal it here before The Last Jedi hits the screens. I'm not a big fan of faceless characters, Darth Vader notwithstanding, and her chasing a traitor to the Empire isn't enough to keep me reading, but I'm sure true blue Star Wars fans will like this a lot.

 Batman #30 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (pencils) Seth Mann (inks) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). It's part 2 of "The Ballad of Kite Man". It's a really depressing song but it shows us how "The War of Jokes and Riddles" is going.

 Lark's Killer #2 - Bill Willingham (writer) Mark Dos Santos (art) Salvatore Aiala (colours) Thomas Mauer (letters). I don't need Bill's plea to spread the word to old Fables fans to buy his new book because I like it so much I would gladly recommend it to anyone. It's a cool mix of modern and medieval. Lark provides the modern and the land of Hyperborea is the sword and sorcery setting. Please give this a try.

 Spider-Man/Deadpool #21 - Elliott Kalan (writer) Todd Nauck (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Here we go again with a Murderworld story as Spidey and Deadpool try to outsmart Arcade and not get killed. Elektra managed to beat the bad guy and I know these buddies will too. It's fun to see what kind of death traps creative teams come up with.

 Superman #30 - Keith Champagne (writer) Ed Benes, Tyler Kirkman & Philip Tan (art) Danei Ribeiro, Tomeu Morey & Sunny Gho (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). The 2-parter with Sinestro and Parallax concludes with the bad guys losing once again. This one had a nice message to it.

 Astonishing X-Men #3 - Charles Soule (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Mark Morales (inks) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I liked the Wolverine evolution cover because it features prominently in this issue. The team's sojourn into the astral plane to defeat the Shadow King continues with this Old Man Logan solo adventure. I think the good guys just made a big mistake.

 Star Wars: Darth Vader #5 - Charles Soule (writer) Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) Cam Smith (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I didn't know what a Kyber crystal was until now. There's a very well done sequence that made me think that Vader's path was going to change course, but alas it was not to be. An interesting premise though.

 Spider-Man #20 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nico Leon (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). We got a new regular customer at Comet Comics who is a big Miles Morales fan and the two of us geek out over how much we love reading this title when he comes in to pick up the latest issue off the racks. That infectious joy is why I love my job. Miles makes a big life change starting this issue and lands in hot water right from the get go. This book is never boring.

David Thaxton - Had this moment in Final Lair where it looked like he’d had a heart attack, and then Christine put her hands over his on his heart and just—🥺 David Arnsperger - Had a wild self-caress right before MOTN where he rocked backward. That's it, that's all I remember. John Cudia - I remember actively not liking his Phantom the first time I saw him, but I changed my mind at his Final Lair because it was so good. Jonathan Roxmouth - Has a slightly nasally tone and a slightly deeper voice than a lot of Phantoms. He did not have good pants. Actually the worst pants I’ve ever seen. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is not afraid to burn you if you’ve wronged him. I also don’t like how his wig looks like thinning hair at the very front. Tim Martin Gleason - Don't ask me why, I just like him okay. James Romick - Really like his voice. Does an excellent sad. Derrick Davis - Fantastic voice. Brought a touch of humanity to that awful restaged show and made it worth watching. Wish we could have seen him in Real POTO. Great ass. Brent Barrett - I remember liking him. Thomas James O’Leary - Good acting, good voice. Jon Robyns - Makes excellent noises during the Final Lair. Good voice. James Gant - Works best with Eva Shanu-Wilson. Okay acting, but nothing else really going on. Occasional good moments. Thomas Borchert - Unfairly pretty, beautiful voice, excellent choices during Final Lair, MOTN was mesmerizing. Bit of a slut. Top ten for sure.

Christines: Lisa Vroman - An "older" Christine. Great chemistry with Franc D'Ambrosio. Initiated a gentle hand-holding during the ring return with him which was an excellent choice that I don’t often see. Made some other excellent choices throughout the show in reacting to what was happening around her. Looks like she could kill you, is a cinnamon roll except when she’s going to kill you. Elizabeth Southard - Another "older" Christine. Love her. The best chemistry with Gary Mauer, her irl husband. Also had great chemistry with Jim Weitzer, who was her Raoul. Very, very good actor. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll but only for her husband, otherwise she can and will kill. Luzia Nistler - Love her voice. Austrian. (Like German, but elegant.) Emilie Kouatchou - I wanted to like her. But she has a ton of vibrato and she sounds like a child. I also don't care for her acting. She looked like she was only doing what she was told, rather than reacting to things happening around her. Meghan Picerno - I don't remember anything about her. I saw her live right after the reopening. Celinde Schoenmaker - I've only heard audio of her but I remember liking her. Kanisha Feliciano - Good Wishing. Looks fabulous in the blue dress. I love her wigs more than any other Christine. Hers doesn’t look like a frizzy mess. Lucy St Louis - She played a very sympathetic Christine, and has such a beautiful voice. Lily Kerhoas - fierce. Loved the anger she had in Final Lair. Holly Anne-Hull - too much vibrato Paige Blankson - too much vibrato

Raouls: Christopher Carl - Didn't get to see much of him owing to the fact that the boots he's in are Phantom-centered highlights. The little I have seen of him has been excellent though. I've heard an audio boot of him as the Phantom and it was excellent. Has a more "American" pronunciation than most Phantoms. ("ay" vs "ah") Ciaran Sheehan - I like him better as Raoul than as the Phantom. He was ready to throw hands. Has a very stilted way of singing that reminds me of the few clips of Colm Wilkinson, but sounds better than Colm. Willing to troll his associates irl. Bronson Norris Murphy - A. Dorable. The best. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll. Could probably do a murder if pushed far enough. Have heard audio and now seen a boot and he’s a protective Raoul. Hands down my favourite Raoul. John Riddle - Saw him live right after the reopening. I don't remember anything specific about him. Paul Schaefer - Nice chest. Matt Blaker - meh

North Bend Comes to Scout Comics

Inspired by the CIA's secret program MK Ultra, North Bend Comes to Scout Comics #comics

Scout Comics has announced that North Bend is coming to the publisher. The series is written by Ryan Ellsworth with artwork by Pablo De Bonis and colorist Paul Little and lettering by Thomas Mauer.

Who would you say are your favourite Phantom/Christine/Raoul trios on Broadway? I have audios of about every cast in the West End but not Broadway and I'm trying to listen to more of it

Trios are always difficult for me - I can find two people who I really love, but then the third will be just mediocre for me. But a few that I liked:

Michael Crawford, Patti Cohenour, Steve Barton - Luminous vocals and just very nice old school vibe from all three

Thomas James O’Leary, Sandra Joseph, Gary Mauer - While not my top favorites, something about this cast just appealed to me: O’Leary’s slightly manic portrayal, Sandra Joseph’s youthful Christine, and Gary Mauer’s strong Raoul, all seemed to complement each other

Hugh Panaro, Julie Hanson, John Cudia - Three characterizations that worked really well with each other

Gary Mauer, Elizabeth Southard, Jim Weitzer - This is from the tour, but it’s practically the same as Broadway, so I put it in

Jeremy Stolle, Samantha Hill, Greg Mills - Another great cast

Hugh Panaro, Elizabeth Welch, Jeremy Hays - Also a really good cast

And for fun, strong duos with one member I disliked:

Steve Barton, Rebecca Luker, Gary Lindemann - Barton and Luker have voices of silver, even if Barton struggles a bit on the highest notes, but I can’t really recall Gary Lindemann’s performance much (though that doesn’t mean he’s bad, I suppose, just that I wasn’t paying attention to him)

Brad Little, Lisa Vroman, Tim Martin Gleason - (Note: This is from the tour.) Little and Vroman have wonderful chemistry together, but I’ve always found TMG to be too aggressive for my tastes.

Gary Mauer, Marie Danvers, Michael Shawn Lewis - Mauer is one of my favorites and MSL is a giant puppy in Raoul form, but I found Danvers a little shrill and stiff in her acting

John Cudia, Jennifer Hope Wills, Adam Monley - (Note: Also from the tour.) Cudia and Wills were great, but I found Monley to be pretty boring. John Cudia and JHW were later on Broadway with Ryan Silverman as Raoul, but I haven’t listened to him.

Anthony Crivello, Kristi Holden, Andrew Ragone - (Note: This is from Vegas, because I’m just dumping all American productions here.) I adored Kristi Holden and Andrew Ragone’s performance, but I’m not really sure how I feel about Anthony Crivello’s Phantom.

Tim Martin Gleason, Trista Moldovan, Sean MacLaughlin - (Note: Another from the tour.) Trista Moldovan and Sean MacLaughlin are very cute with each other, but I was not that fond of TMG’s Phantom

Hugh Panaro, Trista Moldovan, Kyle Barisich - Panaro was great, Moldovan is solid, but Barisich seemed to be sleepwalking the role sometimes

Paul A. Schaefer, Mary Michael Patterson, Jeremy Hays - MMP and Hays are two rather restrained actors and they bounced off each other well, but Schaefer did not appeal to me, vocally or in his acting

Norm Lewis, Kaley Ann Voorhees, Jeremy Hays - I love KAV and Jeremy Hays, but Norm Lewis was apparently directed to be more of a childish Phantom, and it never quite clicked for me

James Barbour, Rachel Eskenazi-Gold or Ali Ewoldt, Jordan Donica - Donica is a wonderful Raoul and REG and Ewoldt bring two different portrayals, but Barbour doesn’t bring anything new to the role at all

Note that a lot of this is actually based on videos, where I was able to see their acting, so some might be disadvantaged if it’s only through audio.
