Head of Wantastiquet/Marble Dust — Marble Dust (Wooden Finger)

Head of Wantastiquet is Paul LaBrecque’s long-running synth/electronics project. If you’re familiar with LaBrecque it’s likely because he plays guitar in the hoary psychedelic collective Sunburned Hand of the Man. Here he plays some guitar, too, but the predominant flavor comes from Moog, as well as various types of synth (Blofeld, dreadbox and some software synths, according to LaBrecque). Thus while his main project drones and thunders in rock-adjacent way, this one stutters and percolates with electronic elements. You could dance to a couple of these tracks (“Dabke” “Les Nuits sur la Plage de Jabalia”), though even the hedonist intervals play to the head as well as the body.

This music is almost entirely instrumental, but LaBrecque makes it express a point of view anyway. Arab themes and sounds run through these cuts; the track titles can be linked to protest against genocide in Gaza. “La Guerre Contre Les Enfants” (“the war on children”) layers shimmering textures of synthesized sound over one another, a high, silvery keyboard motif and flute-like tones carrying a mournful melody. The percussion, when it enters, is likely electronic, but it rattles and pings and echoes like hand drums in some 21st century souk. “Thawra” (or revolution in Arabic) folds a panting breath into insistent, paranoiac rhythms; a sense of panic, of chase, of desperate courage, is built in. “Dabke” builds an exuberant, syncopated beat out of cowbells, distorted guitar and synth drums, both space-age synth-dance and traditional celebration locked in dialogue.

These Middle Eastern flavors reflect a long-standing preoccupation for LaBrecque, whose first album Trees, Chants and Hollers dedicated a song to Rachel Corrie. Dead Seas from 2010 included “Mavi Marmara,” a song about a ship carrying aid to Palestine that was attacked by the Israelis. While living in Germany, LaBrecque recorded with Ghazi Barakat, a Palestinian-German who he says, “deepened my knowledge about the history.” This album further explores the nexus of Arab sounds and Arab struggle in the context of existential crisis in Gaza.

The most direct allusion to these themes comes in “Tonight, I Will Be Ressurected with the Wind,” whose precise lattice of synth sounds gives way, about halfway through the track, to the haunting sound of female singing. That’s Omayma Jehouani, artist LaBrecque found on Instagram. There and on Youtube, she has an extensive library of vocal clips but little to no identifying information. Her voice, however, is extraordinary, with a lilt and a wobble in it that suggests both joy and sadness.  

Though anchored in LaBrecque’s values and beliefs, Marble Dust is by no means polemical. These very human concerns infuse its electronic drones and rhythms with an undeniable spiritual resonance. Not all electronic music has soul, but this record does.

“4 MEN, WOMAN FOUND GUILTY IN GOLD TRIAL,” The Globe and Mail. June 6, 1942. Page 5. --- Sentences Total Twelve and One-Half Years; Fines Amount to $16,000 ---- Prison sentences totalling twelve and one half years and ranging from 18 months to 4 years were Imposed here yesterday by Mr. Justice Keiller MacKay on four men and a woman found guilty of one or mare counts in connection with exportation of gold illegally. In addition, fines totaling $16.000 were imposed on four of the convicted parties.

The jury, which had listened to the trial hearing for more than four weeks, returned its decision yesterday afternoon following deliberations which began last Tuesday evening, and extended over a span of 67 hours. The jury found four men and a woman guilty of one or more charges, acquitted five men on all five counts, and found one man guilty on four counts, the Jury disagreeing on the fifth count against him.

Only two of the five men acquitted on all counts were given absolute freedom. Three others who were acquitted on all five counts, and those who were found quilts, will face additional charges which will he heard at the autumn criminal assize court sitting. In all, there were more than thirty charges Royal Canadian Mounted Police against the ten men and the woman. 

Faibish Fined $1,000. Sydney Faibish, 22-year-old university graduate and licensed optometrist, [top picture] who was found guilty on all five counts involving conspiracy to export gold legally, conspiracy to aid or abet the export of gold and also of conspiring to purchase rock, gold or ore illegally, was sentenced to four years in Kingston Penitentiary and a fine at $7.000. Failing to pay the fine, he will serve an additional eighteen months in prison.

Annie Newman, 54-year-old woman, [second from top] was sentenced to three years in Kingston Penitentiary and a fine of $5,000. Failure to pay the fine will mean an extra year in prison. 

Lionel Labrecque, [bottom] convicted on one of the five counts and for whom the Jury recommended leniency, was sentenced to Kingston Penitentiary for two years, with a fine of $1.000 failure to pay which would result in an additional year in prison.

Ernest Labrerque, 45-year-old Timmins resident, [third from top] was sentenced to two years in Kingston Penitentiary, with a $1,000 fine. An additional eighteen months in prison would result from non-payment of the fine. 

Alphonse Labrerque was found not guilty on four counts, and the jury disagreed on the fifth count involving conspiracy to purchase or sell ore or gold. He was retained in custody to fare additional charges at the nest session of the criminal assize courts.

Deluca to Reformatory. Frank Deluca, who told his Lordship he was a veteran of the last war, having fought with the French forces, was sentenced to fifteen months determinate and three months indeterminate. 

Following his acquittal on all counts, Paul Labrecque, who twice during the four-week hearing failed to attend in court was permitted to be freed on $2.000 bail pending the outcome of further charges.

Albert Labrecque and Wille Franciotti were found not guilty and were freed when the Crown stated there were no further charges against them. Benjamin Faibish and Albert Mazzaucca, acquitted, but who will face other charges in the fall, were freed on $200 bail

His Lordship, following passing of the sentences, complimented all counsel on their efforts during the long, difficult and exhausting trial. The Crown's case was conducted jointly by R. M. Fowler and John J. Robinette, while the defense was taken by R. H. Greer, KC, for the ten men, and by J. Murphy, KC. for Mrs. Newman.

“Three Timmins Men Sentenced in Gold Cases at Toronto,” The Porcupine Advance (Timmins). June 11, 1942. Page 1, section 2. ---- Some Other Timmins Men Acquitted. Other Charges Pending. ---- Last week at Toronto, with Mr. Jus ice J. Keiller MacKay presiding, five persons three of them from Timmins were convicted in connection with a onspiracy to export gold, in the form of buttons, illegally from Canada, and were sentenced to terms from 15 mon- ths in the reformatory to four years in benitentiary plus a heavy fine.

The heaviest sentence was given to Sydney Faibish, of Toronto, convicted in three charges in connection with illegal traffic in gold. He was sentenced to four years in penitentiary on each count, terms to run concurrently, and was also fined $7,000.00, or an additional 18 months. Faibish, whose age is given as 22 years, was charged with conspiring to export gold illegally. conspiring to aid or abet the export of gold, and conspiring to purchase gold ore illegally. 

The one woman involved - Mrs. Annie Newman of Toronto - was sentenced to three years in penitentiary and fined $5,000.00, or an additional year. She was convicted of conspiring to purchase gold or gold ore.

Frank DeLuca, Timmins, was given afteen months determinate and three months indeterminate in the reformatory. In finding DeLuca guilty of conspiring to purchase gold or gold ore, the jury made a plea for leniency. 

Lionel Labecque, Timmins, was sentenced to two years in penitentiary and a fine of $1,000.00, or an additional year.

Ernest Labrecque, Timmins, drew two years in penitentiary and a fine of $3,000.00.or an additional 18 months.

Benjamin Faibish. Toronto: Paul and Albert Labrecque, Willie Franciotti and Albert Mazucca, of Timmins and Val-d'Or were acquitted on the charges heard against them. Albert Labrecque and Franciotti were at liberty to go, but the others named are held facing other charges. Paul Labrecque was taken to the hospital immediately after the verdict. He was released on $2,000.00 bail as he is one of those facing other charges.

The shipments of gold in connection with the case against the accused people were alleged to have been made via Buffalo to New York. It will be noted that the sentences are much more severe than in the ordinary cases of illegal trafficking in gold. The chief reason for this no doubt is that this is wartime, when the illegal export of gold s of particular injury to the country. Also it will be noted that the charges were more serious than in the ordinary "high-grade" case, "conspiracy" implying an organized "ring".

[AL: Faibish was 22, a college student as noted in the story, born in Canada to Romanian Jewish parents, and grew up speaking Yiddish. His parents lived at 228 Grace St. He had no previous criminal record. At Kingston Penitentiary he was convict #6960, and worked in the print shop. In September 1942 he was transferred to Collin’s Bay Penitentiary, becoming inmate #1996. He worked in a clerical role, and was paroled May 1946. He clearly failed to pay his fine. Newman was a widow, who came to Canada from Russian Poland in 1905 and was naturalized in 1921 - she spoke Hebrew as her mother tongue, and lived ‘in business’. She was 54. She had no previous criminal record. Newman was convict #6963 at Kingston Penitentiary’s Prison for Women and was released after 1136 days was released July 1945.

Ernest Labrecque was 54, married, with four kids, a real estate agent, and was French Canadian. He had previously been in jail once before. He was convict #6961 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked as a cleaner. He was transferred September 1942 to Collin’s Bay, becoming inmate #1993. He was released December 1943.

Lionel was Ernest’s son. He was 27, a clerk for a taxi company, and had no criminal record. He was convict #6962 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked in the carpentry shop. In September 1942 he was transferred to Collin’s Bay Penitentiary, becoming inmate #1997. He was paroled May 1944.]

He's been married to his wife Jane for 45 years. He says there's something about the music that helps.

"I have no idea how all that works," he said. "I just am really glad that it's there."

This is the group's most daunting project to date: learning nine original songs -- commissioned by the chorus and performed this summer in St. Paul, Minnesota.

"We both thought, 'Oh my lord, how are we gonna learn all this?' We've never heard it before," said Jane. "But we both have grown to really love the music."

Composer Victor Zupanc and poet Louisa Castner wrote the pieces with some help.  "In every single song we can point to the line or an image that came from them," said Castner.

"They keep pulling us aside and saying, 'You-- you've given us a voice,'" Zupanc said.The haunting "Ballad of the Dinghy" was inspired by caregiver Janet Labrecque. The chorus, for her, is a safe harbor.
