The Anatomy Of A Scene
Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight" plays over the opening shots of Arrival, giving the audience a foreshadowing of what is to come. This particular track is used in numerous films (I've seen it in at least six or seven, including Shutter Island and The Innocents), and is the saddest song in the world, in my opinion. Amy Adams has a major role in Arrival. In the last hour of "Twilight," a gloomy feeling rapidly permeates the whole movie. As the tale opens, we learn that Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams) has suffered a devastating loss: Massive pod-shaped vehicles suddenly drop from the sky and hover over 12 distinct locations on Earth.
No one can explain why. Nothing happens, in fact. Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker), a member of military intelligence, visits Dr. Banks to ask for her assistance in investigating and communicating with whichever intelligence is behind the landing as governments around the world try to figure out what it means and as people in those countries react by looting, joining cults, and even committing mass suicide. She travels to the mission location with the renowned quantum scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner). With the help of a cynical Agent Halpern (Michael Stuhlbarg), they suit up and board the ship in an attempt to make contact. Avoid giving too much away about the plot, other than the fact that it will make your day to see it unfold.
While it's Denis Villeneuve's (Prisoners, Sicario) and Eric Heisserer's (Lights Out) most inventive film to date, the pace is slower than one would anticipate from an alien invasion movie. For a film dealing with so many complex ideas, it doesn't waste any more time on explanation than is really necessary. Like a Rubik's puzzle in the hands of a virtuoso, nothing in Arrival makes complete sense until the last moments when everything clicks into place. I literally said, "Wow!" and was leaned forward in my chair. The movie was just too good.
Throughout BlacKkKlansman, there's a more fascinating idea floating about that, if addressed, might have resulted in a far more dramatic and terrifying film. At one point, Patrice and Stallworth argue over the positive or negative effects that movies about black people have on the black community. Lee sometimes leans on this connection between black filmmaking of the 1970s and his own depiction of black people in this film by using stills from his prior films as examples. Later in the video, Harry Belafonte addresses the BSU and discusses the lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco in 1916 and the impact that the publication of D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation had on national attitudes toward black people, the revival of the KKK, and the ensuing horrific mutilations and murders. The President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, saw the video at the White House, he informs the BSU students, and called it "history written with lightning."
We transition to scenes of Duke and his KKK chapter watching The Birth of a Nation, where they cheer and pump their fists like they're at a sporting event. Yet Wilson's words are the ones that stay with you. Hollywood has had a significant impact on how Americans see race, helping to cement stereotypes that persist even after the film has ended and find their way into policy debates, political campaigns, and the voting booth. It's hardly a stretch to say that the film accurately portrays the impact of The Birth of a Nation. When coupled with the topic of blaxploitation films and black heroes, the effect is dramatic.
BlacKkKlansman had a tremendous chance to disturb both cinema buffs and casual audiences, since it is more approachable than many of Lee's more recent efforts, by reminding people that it's not only overtly racist films with overtly racist intentions that are to blame. Pictures are captivating for a number of reasons, but when we partake in them blindly, they may do actual damage to actual people. The audience's own complicity in perpetuating stereotypes may be shown via a film's examination of that topic. The film settles for satire of Trump and the Klan, two targets that only a moron would overlook in 2018. It's not totally off base. The fact that its implications are so easy to deduce reflects just how transparent the situation is.
The release of BlacKkKlansman just serves to deepen our disappointment. And the fact that we are able to see through these tragic illusions brings us great joy.

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes — N°2 / Ame Debout / Paix (Anthology Records)

These are most uncommon records. Let's get the common points of reference out of the way: Nico, Can. The career of Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes took shape and peaked in the same years as those artists. They were all working on the edge of possibility in the early 1970s. What they were making was part of the rock scene, though none were invested in rock as a sector of pop. They summoned chaos and surrendered to it. Ribeiro had, like Nico, been a mod 1960s model and peripheral actress (Goddard and Fellini respectively). And like Nico and Damo Suzuki, her singing pushes past the boundaries of reason. Her collaborator Patrice Moullet, like John Cale and Holger Czukay, came from conservatory training. Each made records with a forbidding throb that still sounds modern, though perhaps it is impossible to ever catch up when these kinds of spirits are unleashed.
If these albums are timeless, it's taken a while for their reputation to spread enough to warrant an American release. The lyrics are French, with a few dips into Portuguese, Ribeiro being the daughter of immigrants who settled in Lyon. The language barrier and distribution have been limiting factors. The mp3 blog era helped immeasurably, along with the rising interest in folky drone. Ribeiro and Moullet could make pretty music, dotting these albums with classical guitar interludes and cafe chanson. At their core, though, Alpes were about exploration, finding shapes and pacing songs that remain striking. Blots of noise erupt, tearing open the slowly boiling verses, with the bits of folky pop providing incomplete relief.
The spirits unleashed do a lot to carry the listener past the barriers. Ribeiro comes at the songs through a variety of strategies, from reminiscence to shrieks. Her emotion, or lack of it, rides past linguistic comprehension. She can sing conventionally well, with a guttural lilt akin to Lotte Lenya or Edith Piaf. But lines delivered smoothly sit alongside experiments in what voice can do as an instrument and as a character. Over the 18 minutes of "Poem Non Epique" she devolves from simple distress into straight-jacket babbling. In "Paix ," she announces benedictions to the underdogs and afflicted. Talking more than singing, her delivery offers authority more than empathy, as if reading a scroll from the Vatican. Her stoicism is a presentation of resolve, reaching out to the retreating forces of 1960s optimism.
Moullet, in charge of the arrangements, is equally radical, mixing freedom with discipline. A musical instrument designer, his textures sound just off enough from rock to become uncanny. The lead figure for "Paix" is a descending single-string scale with tone that sometimes feels like a bass guitar, sometimes like a Stratocaster. Sitting on the edge of amp distortion, it fizzes up to blend with an organ shifting between the ecclesiastical and acid rock improv. The driving rhythm doesn't come from a drummer behind traps. Moullet constructed motor-driven beat boxes that sound like bicycle derailleurs tapping congas. The effect is both regimented and alien. Rhythm machines appear intermittently across these albums. Many tracks lack percussion altogether, with beats derived from flamenco strums. There's ample use of wide stereo separation, but more than most of their progressive peers, it's worked into the melodic ideas, making higher and lower frequencies criss-cross space.
Paix, the album, is their best-sequenced creation. Opener "Roc Alpin" hews close to the conventions of prog in 1972 — keyboard fanfares, mellotron-like orchestral washes, soaring vocals, and a plain 'ol drum kit bashing away. By closing 25-minute suite "Un jour...la mort" we are in a very different place: lonely guitar landscapes, proto-techno whorls, drone, caws of panic.
Structure distinguishes all three albums in this reissue project, and the juxtaposing of the sublime with the ugly can be as fascinating as the sounds themselves. N°2 is partitioned with unaccompanied Spanish guitar and closes with a traditionally-styled Portuguese ballad. This austere classicism frames shocks and jolts. "Silen Von Kathy" thunders with kettle drums and Sabbathy doom. The shifts are like being lifted out of the water and dunked back in, taken from placid air to nearly drowning. Ame Debout launches right into the percussion engines and rabid growling. Lighter moments are fleeting, the classical guitar an aside to Ribeiro's most brusque eruptions — as in the two-part "Alpes," where a galloping rave-up ends with the sounds of riders trampled by horses.
In the context of the 1970s, this music feels tucked away, distant within the Francophone world and hidden from the Anglo, as if lying in wait for our own time. It's similar to how Alice Coltrane's mystic yearning resonates now that it is free of the expectations of mid-century jazz. The last ten years have made the mixing of medieval and the motorized seem natural with the haunts of Demdike Stare and Shackleton. Circuit des Yeux walks the same line between composition and instinct, the pastoral and industrial. She produced a cover of a Ribeiro number to promote these releases. The long suites played on hand-constructed instruments matches the methods of Steven R. Smith, who turns out cult rock while hidden from the touring world. Ribeiro and Moullet's operations don't feel like footnotes to hippy outsiderism anymore. They are the work of guerrillas who have just come down from the hills, ready to ambush our senses.

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner in Arrival (Denis Villeneuve, 2016) Cast: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mark O'Brien, Tzi Ma. Screenplay: Eric Heisserer, based on a story by Ted Chiang. Cinematography: Bradford Young. Production design: Patrice Vermette. Film editing: Joe Walker. Music: Jóhann Jóhannsson. Like his film Sicario (2015), Denis Villeneuve's Arrival seems to be torn between two aims that don't merge comfortably. On one hand, it's a fairly conventional first-encounter sci-fi thriller, with plucky good guys at odds with the bureaucracy and the military, and an 11th-hour, 59th-minute rescue of the world from self-destruction. On the other, it's a provocative exploration of some big ideas about language and time and the nature of humanity. Villeneuve's natural inclination seems to be toward the latter, which may be why so much of the film is dark -- not just tonally, but visually, so that we only begin to see much of the action in full light toward the end. Cinematographer Bradford Young's cameras seem to be stopped down to the point that I often had trouble discerning what's happening. Presumably this gradual emergence into light is a metaphor for the illumination that comes to linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) as she learns to communicate with the aliens and to understand not only why they are visiting the Earth but also what it means for her own life. It's a good, chewy film with some fine performances, and I welcome any sci-fi movie that makes its audiences work to comprehend its ideas. But I also wished for more exploration of those ideas, and how Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), our heroes, came to arrive at them. The film stints on dramatizing the process of discovery for the sake of building suspense and making some obvious points about media hysteria. It gets in a nice dig at conspiracy charlatans like Alex Jones, and even at certain cable news outlets, as when Louise tells her mother she shouldn't be watching "that channel." But I wanted more specifics on how the teams of linguists and mathematicians began to decode the language of the heptapods, a close encounter of the word kind. Still, any movie that valorizes thought is welcome in these days of comic-book-based blockbusters aimed at the gut.
