PATRIARCHS IN BLACK Capture Lightning in a Bottle with ‘My Veneration’
~Review by Tom Hanno~
Tumblr media
Today, PATRIARCHS IN BLACK releases their sophomore album, 'My Veneration' (2023), via MDD Records. For those of you who don't remember, Patriarchs In Black is the project spearheaded by guitarist Dan Lorenzo (Hades, Non-Fiction, Vessel of Light, Cassius King) and drummer Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig, A Pale Horse Named Death, Kill Devil Hill, etc).
The band recruited a phenomenal roster of singers, who each do a song and sometimes more than one. For My Veneration they assembled an even more diverse group than they did for their initial outing, Reach For The Scars (review), and we're here to talk about what they accomplished for their return.
youtube
"Dead or Dying" by Patriarchs In Black
The album opens up with "Dead Or Dying," a track that features the vocal stylings of Karl Agell (ex-Corrosion Of Conformity) and the bass playing of Dave Neabore. As expected, this song is the perfect way to kick off the album.
I've always loved what Karl does vocally, and he doesn't disappoint here. The music is influenced by the Doom and Stoner genres, and the rhythm section underneath is rock solid. I challenge you to not move for the duration of the song, but I'll tell you now that the power of the groove will make that impossible to achieve.
"Veneration" by Patriarchs In Black
The first single was "Veneration," which features Mark Sunshine (Unida) on vocals, as well as the rhyming of the one and only D.M.C., otherwise known as Darryl McDaniels of hip-hop legends, Run D.M.C. Also featured is Emma Smoler, who contributed some beautiful violin work.
The song itself has touches of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and a ton of groove; particularly during the sections where D.M.C takes over. The vocals of Mark Sunshine are incredible, as he conjured up a serious Robert Plant vibe, and then mixed it with pieces of the Grunge era. Overall, this track is one of the best on the album.
"Non-Defectum" by Patriarchs In Black
"Non-Defectum" is immediately after "Veneration," and continues the groove factor while also having a bit of a hip hop flow during the verse sections.
Kelly Abe contributed a diverse vocal performance, and it is one of the highlights of this album in my opinion. As always, Dan puts in the perfect guitar parts, while Johnny and Eric J. Morgan (bass) hold everything together by using their talents to full effect.
"Lust For Lies" by Patriarchs In Black
"Lust For Lies" is another track that I gravitated towards, and it features vocalist Rob Traynor and Johnny Araya on bass, and yes, he's the brother of Slayer's Tom Araya.
There is a literal ton of Black Sabbath influence throughout this song, and that is mostly thanks to what Dan does on guitar; he pulls out the perfect blend of Doom Metal and groove. The vocals are fairly diverse, which helps add another layer to this killer tune.
Other standout tracks include "My Veneration," "Crooked Smile," and a cover of Black Sabbath's "Hole In The Sky."
The album is only two days away from release as of this writing, so go to Bandcamp and check out the single of "Veneration" and prepare yourselves for the full album. Enjoy!

Spirit World nitpick but I do think it matters. Xanthe always refers to John as "Constantine" as if they're contractually obligated to say his surname like it's his registered superhero name when it's just his name. Why can't they ever refer to him as "John"?
Tumblr media
A really weird side effect to the superhero-ification of John Constantine and making his surname essentially his hero title is that in stories like this, it accidentally and definitely unintentionally enforces a racist and sexist dynamic to how you refer to other characters in the story. Cassandra Cain is called either "Batgirl" or "Cass", but never "Cain". Xanthe Zhou is called "Xanthe" but never "Zhou". In a story where Johnstantine is the token white guy, it's kinda weird that he's the only one consistently referred to by his surname.
Tumblr media
It even continues into the Pride comic the two appeared in. I know it can be argued that Xanthe is referring to John this way because he's older, but it's not consistent with how they've referred to other Asian adult or elder characters in Spirit World. It also makes it harder to buy that John and Xanthe are friends when they're not even on a first name basis. Idk, I think it would be cute if Xanthe had familial honorifics for John in some way or a cultural nickname. Make it fun outside of calling John "old man" all the time. Where's the imagination.

Team Green calling Rhaenyra every misogynistic slur under the sun for the crime of having sex just for Alicent to be having sex with Criston while Blood and Cheese happened is pure comedy

I feel like, regrettably, this website needs a crash course in recognizing a particular brand of post about female martyrdom and suffering that is really, at its core, based on OP's views on a holistic level, a post about hating """men""" in disguise. Female anger is righteous and does come a from a place of personal and historical suffering, and should be expressed. I truly do think that. But I guess Tumblr's userbase sucks because then you go on these blogs and it's post after post about how men are ontologically evil and sex work should be criminalized and women are these broken shattered creatures unilaterally scorned by MALES with no hope for justice. Just the absolute most childish reductive way of analyzing misogyny in our culture that always boils down to racism, prejudice against sex workers, and transphobia

Is it verging on tinfoil hat territory to laugh about how the egg Aegon II failed to hatch after murdering Rhaenyra was purple?
Or could it be an... easter egg?

I don’t even fuck with Anne Rice as a writer but even I can respect that she wrote the book as a way to deal her grief as a mother and used the character of Louis as a conduit for her feelings of motherhood and the loss of a child so it’s insane to me that these cunty mother Lestat bitches who worship her books refuse to respect what was an essential aspect of her writing. Like I don’t even respect her as a person but I do respect her grief in losing her daughter and what the story was meant to help her deal with. I truly do not care if your mom was mean like Lestat like your fucking childhood is not the story we’re talking about.
And in the show’s context where they’ve made Lestat even more of a patriarch, enhanced his powers and made him 200 years older, put him in the most father knows best situations known to man, made him wear like 4 different wifebeaters, and explicitly called Louis the wife multiple times.. and yet you’re still that dumb, racist or both. I have no clue if this cunty mother shit was a thing before the show but it sounds an awful lot like they became louder and more obnoxious once Louis was black.

Angry black women like me, it was said, who were willing to openly, and sometimes, quite forcefully, contradict our male counterparts, along with our general unwillingness to smile on command or otherwise cater to their overtures, however jacked up they might be, were running good black men away and making ourselves much less viable as marital companions.

#w h a t#t h e#f u c k#this fandom also really sucks :/#i’ll never understand how certain team green fans can claim to love alicent and helaena and yet unironically support the side of the war#that very much wants to continue perpetuating patriarchal violence and control#aka the very thing that’s made both these female characters so very miserable#why is it so difficult for people to understand that rhaenyra becoming queen and reigning in her own right for some good long years#would force an ideological shift and would open a discussion that had been closed for a long time in westeros#alicent has suffered from the patriarchy but she also continues the cycle w/ her treatment of her children#please just please understand that you do not have to like team black nor do you have to like team black characters#but trying to justify aegon usurping rhaenyra is nonsense and completely unjustifiable no matter how hard you try to twist the situation#and please don’t try to take some centrist ‘team smallfolk stance’ bc that stance is simply one ppl take to shift the topic away#from the patriarchy and how denying a woman her legal inheritance tore the realm apart#‘but andal tradition’ bleh ‘why should the targs be ruling’ bleh ‘the small folk suffer more’ bleh ‘the dragons are nukes’ bleh#these are all red herrings meant to divert away from the main topic & are usually used by ppl to justify their support of team green#supporting the team that wishes for the continuation of the cycle is wrong#i support team black bc this is a break in the cycle and opens a discussion that westeros has needed for thousands of years#the social change would be slow but at least there’d be change!#<-of course we know this discussion didn’t rly open bc rhaenyra didn’t have a peaceful transfer of power and later died way too early on#but even tho she died so early a character in the main books series is using the precedent she set to support her own claim!
