I read somewhere once that Garp was mean for not rescuing Ace at Marineford, which, dude, I think you're missing the point. That Garp has a conflict with his duty vs his family is the best thing Oda could do for his character. He is a man so proud of his work, he is not blind to the atrocities of the government, for that reason he agreed to take Ace in, he wanted to help him, to be a marine so that when his heritage is revealed (It was inevitable) He would have a chance at leniency, but no, he wanted to be a pirate by choice, to be bigger than Roger and step out of his shadow. He definitely messed up by telling him his heritage and indirectly causing Ace's suicidal desires, but Garp loved him very much, as his blood grandson, he just wanted the boy to live free (It was not a crime to be born).

If Ace had yelled for help to his grandfather, he would have done it without thinking, but he didn't, because Ace knew that the situation he got himself into was his fault, Being stubborn led him to his death, he knows perfectly well that Garp tried to save him from his fate, but he was faithful to his desire for freedom, he was not going to demand a moral debate, he couldn't, he didn't want to. That's why the only thing he asked of him and didn't comply was that he kill him before reaching Marineford.

I love Ace and Garp's brotherly relationship. I wish Oda would let us see more of their conversations, just as I loved that campfire conversation with Luffy asleep :(
