@look-at-those-niceass-rocks and I finished our watch (their first, my... eighth???) of Julie and the Phantoms the other day (*cough* over a week ago *cough*), and like the previous two times, we had some unhinged things to say about it. This one's a bit shorter as we only had episodes 8 and 9 left, but if you enjoy our dumbassery, rest assured, we'll be watching the Descendants franchise next!
Honorable mention: us spending the first 20 minutes of our call trying to find the first two posts because the blog search engine simply Does Not Work.
Captions: [Whimsical music plays] Me: Whimsical music GAYS, OHHHHHHH
*Flashback of the Hotdog Incident (tm)* Bee: Street meat street meat street meat Me: Are you saying "straight meat"??? Bee: NO!
Ray Molina : *is very engaged with his son's ghost dip theory* Bee: The Bandit Heeler energy on this man
Julie: *outside the Patterson's house* Me: Do you have tissues?? Bee: Uhhh, yeah, next to me? Me: Good Bee: Oh boy
*cue lots of sniffling over Unsaid Emily*
Bee: You can tell their prefrontal lobes stopped developing at 17 Me: Yeah, I guess that happens when you die? Brain stops growing?? Bee: hehehe brain machine broke
Julie: What the heck??? Me: Let Julie say fuck! Bee: Of all the characters, Julie should get to say fuck
Me: Finale time! Any predictions? Bee: Oh god, I don't think I could outdo the pink ladies one, uhhh
Bee then spends the next minute and a half being a prophet (in a sense): 1. Alex is going to get a very dramatic on-screen kiss with Seth Clearwater because otherwise I will be Upset 2. In the same way they become Real-or like. Where people can see them-when they play, they will find a way to be corporeal where they can touch each other 3. I think there should be a dance fight with-oh, fuck, what's his name? Evil ghost man?? With his Ghost Cocaine???
Alex and Willie: *emotional hug* Me: WAIT PAUSE. *zooms in on Alex's hand* I think I have that ring. Bee: Riveting.
The boys: *trying to get the PATD opener gig* Promoter: *freaking out* Assistant: *unbothered* Me: A lesbian and an incel are trapped in an office together. Bee: The incel is going to get eaten. Me: And not in the way he wants!
Julie: *having a cry in the alley* Me: I wonder how much they had to pay to keep that Subway sign in the background.
Julie: *takes dahlia from the street vendor* Bee: Truffula tree lookin-ass flower.
Bee: Also I didn't want to ruin that beautiful moment, but all I could think of was "mom come pick me up I'm scared."
Me: this poor tech guy is Going Through It (tm)
Carrie: Been here before Trevor: *Bombastic side eye* Bee: HA that look said, "Damn, I really forgot to parent this girl"
Nick: *Jamming* Us: GO FEDORA KID!!!
Me @ Trevor: That man is going to pass out
Me, as the Boys are appearing: See, I've always wondered what was going on in the ghost club side of this scene, cause look, their costumes are missing pieces! Alex's shirt is open, Reggie's jacket is just gone! Bee: Oh yeah Me: Like it's probably just a storytelling choice to show they're where they want to be via clothes, 'cause this is more in line with how they dress normally, but it does make me wonder what we're missing. Like is there a fight? Luke: *appearing* Me: See his sleeves got ripped off! How and why? Bee: They did that for us. You, specifically Me: *cackling*
Julie and Luke: *crying, about to hug* Me, noticing that Luke's pants Fit Very Well: Not the most important thing happening here, but uh, dat ass tho
After rewinding the scene a bit because it didn't hit Bee in the moment that They Were Hugging Bee: I was so caught up in the euphoria of a good butt that for a moment, I lived in a world where they weren't ghosts
Julie + Phantoms: We played the Orpheum! Me: Saved by the power of friendship! Bee: And this man's ass!
Me: So yeah, that was Julie and the Phantoms, how ya feeling? Bee: Great! This definitely won't change my brain chemistry forever
Next up, Descendants!

Ryan Ross has said, in a podcast appearance with friends in 2019, that he doesn't regret leaving PATD. Which is good. It's a terrible thing to live with regret.
A question I'd be more interested in, is whether he regrets that Panic got so big so quickly? Does he ever wish they'd had more time to mature, musically and individually, and to develop their sound and fan base over time? It may not have been likely from a clashing personalities point of view but I'm most interested in how he views the situation as a musician, whether he ever wishes they'd had more opportunities to focus on the music, which is hard to do when you're 19/20 years old and suddenly facing a crazy situation like Panic were thrown in when AFYCSO blew up.
I'd kind of compare Panic's situation to that of The Strokes with Is This It and the media frenzy that created, except The Strokes:
Were just a couple of years older - which makes a huge difference at that age;
Broke big just before the early days of social media and didn't have the teenage fan base with all the intense scrutiny, bandom and shipping;
Refused to do anything "commercial" (you wouldn't see them on a tour sponsored by a car manufacturer) so The Strokes kind of handicapped themselves with sales and promotion right there.
Also as opposed to Ryan, Julian Casablancas is the primary songwriter and lead singer, which gave him a control over his band that Ryan didn't have.
Just thinking out loud, but if Ryan gives any interviews in the future I'd like someone to ask him how he feels about this as a musician, rather than asking him about a quip he made about spray cheese 20 years ago.
About shippers, though.
The Strokes provided so, so much source material for shippers. What Brendon and Ryan hinted at in their stage act...
Tumblr media
The Strokes spelled outall the damn time.
Tumblr media
Then there was whatever Julian had going on with Jack White.
A direct quote from Jack White: "Julian stayed at my house and slept in my childhood bedroom, even wore my pajamas. He came into my room in the middle of the night thinking it was the bathroom and we laughed." (From Meet Me In The Bathroom)
Oh bandom shippers, why are you searching for crumbs from Petekey when there is this much juicy meat to gnaw on?
Tumblr media
I'm not implying that the Strokes had greater artistic integrity than Panic for rejecting commercial opportunities. For most bands, the dream is just to be able to support yourselves financially by making music, and even if you achieve that it can end at any moment. If you're offered commercial opportunities, you pretty much have to take them; this could be the one shot you have to establish some financial security beyond the grind of life as a touring musician. That wasn't an issue for the Strokes - (in)famously, most of them came from wealthy backgrounds. They could afford to say no to commercial opportunities - even if that didn't make sense to people in their inner circle. To quote Amanda de Cadenet, wife of Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi: "They're the band that turned down a million dollars for some Heineken ad. That's dumb. Ryan [Gentiles, the Strokes long time manager] has taken a lot of flak for not being able to do things that we all think they should have done, but nobody can get these fuckers to do anything they don't want to do." (Again from Meet Me In The Bathroom).
The main point of this post is wondering if Ryan Ross, as a musician, ever wishes Panic had had a slower burn, more of a chance to find their feet as people and a band before the onslaught of fame. But in research for this post I found photos I just had to share, and here we are.

idk much to ask about for hcs, but what genre of music do you think each of the main 4 likes (and craig's gang if u wanna)? :D
it took me a bit to get to this bc this question means so much to me you dont understand . ANWAYS
stan: ...very generic answer but like. midwest emo. dad rock. and like.. emo / pop rock too??? he could rock w/ some fall out boy, but not like patd cuz its too theatre kidsy. and OBVIOUSLY the front bottoms and alex g and modern baseball!! if we learned anything in band in china its that he very much treats music like an outlet for his emotions. and on that note he listens to metal too, but mostly when he is mentally at his worse.
kyle: i dont think i could pin him down to one genre, he's a big music guy but stays within the constraints of "music with authenticity but not to the point that it makes him look pathetic". so he's not listening to the front bottoms like stan is because that's just.. TOO raw, and hes caught up in the "lack of music conventions" in stan's music taste (he doesn't know a thing about music theory so he'll get pissed if you ask why). at the same time like kyle would NOT be into overproduced shit you hear on the radio u feel me. he curates his spotify playlist moods well, new wave/folk/indie rock/r&b at his neutral state and hip hop/punk/harder rock when at his other neutral state (pissed off). he doesn't listen to music when he's sad he just sits there in silence with a thousand yard stare
cartman: once again, expected answer, but he's a bubblegum pop girlie, so like britney spears/lady gaga/justin timberlake/beyonce OBVIOUSLY!!! he also likes hyperpop but the types that lean more into the "pop" part than the "hyper" part like charli xcx and carly rae jepsen. he hates listening to anything that isnt fun and stan and kyle dont like anything too fun so every road trip where they pass the aux across the group is a warzone
kenny: quite literally will listen to anything and everything. falls into the industrial pop / electropop scene frequently because he loves that it all sounds very New! he is a very social individual so he's most likely to put on what will get a rise out of his friends, he puts on 100 gecs and nine inch nails everytime he gets the aux because they bitch about it the entire time. its funny. he prefers to have noise on 24/7 and will even listen to pop country if it means unlocking new emotions
butters: will also listen to anything but to a worse degree. kenny has a rationale for what he listens to and why he enjoys it but butters just hears a song and decides its the best thing he's heard in his life. he's well versed in the girlypop scene through cartman but he also thinks that ajr is genuinely #deep. you know those overproduced songs that sound like they'd be in old navy commercials??? yeah. butters would listen to that shit.
but also worth mentioning hes not really a music person like he doesnt have spotify and most of what he listens to is through his friends
craig: just straight up does not listen to music. he doesnt hate it but there is no urge and he is DEEPLY noise sensitive, and a lot of music is unpredictable. more likely to put on a tv show he's already seen 437587354 times if he needs sound in the background.
clyde: college frat bro vibes like hes into really fake diluted edm like chainsmokers and calvin harris kinda bullshit. he is NOT a music guy and just searches "top hits" and listens to whatever spotify spits at him.
tolkien: another will-listen-to-mostly-anything soldier! he's most accustomed to stuff his parents play around him, so a lot of 60s rock, blues, jazz, swing, shit like that. he's a mild-tempered guy with a mild-tempered taste in music, he'll go crazy for a good guitar solo/bassline like jimi hendrix. because of that he's offput by anything too loud or raunchy like kenny's music but he's desperate to fit in with his peers so he makes it work
jimmy: not very notable because i think he has generic music enjoyment however i do think he's one of weird al yankovic's top streamers on spotify. he and kenny team up to create the worst queue at the house party. he's the one tossing in witch doctor and crazy frog
tweek (just for fun): is very scared of lyrical music trying to communicate Themes and Ideas to him so he listens to car crash sfx type a beats just to get the demons out
wendy (also for fun): dykezilla who listens to laufey and phoebe bridgers and beabadoobee. what can i say.

i'm in Wait Mode so here are some random TGCAUTNAF fun facts because i like talking about my stupid clown writing
before i posted the first TGCAUTNAF, i posted a different one but i deleted it pretty early in and started over because it sucked
the early chapters make me cringe to high heaven because there are some weird parts that were extremely specific to the group chats i had with my friends that are probably not funny to literally anybody else
the inspiration behind it was "no one here is cis" by frankiesin on AO3
it was one of my friends that convinced me to add patd, i wanted to keep it MCR and green day only (patd definitely made it better)
on april fools day one year i posted a chapter where i said i was either ending it or deleting it, i can't remember what exactly, and people kind of freaked out a little
i had a related work that was just funny quotes from TGCAUTNAF pasted onto aesthetic backgrounds that my friend made but he ended up saying some homophobic shit so i cut him off and deleted it all (i have no idea if the pictures even still exist)
there have been multiple occasions where someone has stolen parts of the original TGCAUTNAF to put in their own fics
at the height of TGCAUTNAF popularity, i had a whole GCEU (group chat extended universe) planned which included fully written chapters not in GC format (like the lemon parties and the STD murder) which i still have saved, but they're really not good at all and i can't see myself fixing them, so they'll probably never be posted

a recap of the young veins' show at webster underground in connecticut on 1 april 2010
It's weird to consider former Panic at the Disco rockstars Ryan Ross and Jon Walker playing a venue so small. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you its about the size of a 2 car garage and not quite as wide. A ceiling so low its claustrophobic. The floor literally bounces when you walk on it, as if it's going to give way (which I presume someday it will, hope I’m not there).
7:30pm we walk in to the band first drum hit. and there right before me was Ryan Ross, still the baby faced young man you could spot a mile away holding a giant guitar and smiling.
This I have to stop and point out to you. When last I saw PATD (2008) we were stunned at how timid, scared and almost neurotic he appeared. Look at that old photo of him and the Magpie. He looks like an emaciated child wearing his grandmothers coat. At that meeting he was strained and really rather confused. Jon that day was more relaxed but aloof.
Flash forward 2 years and the boys are smiling, they’re happy, they don’t look overwhelmed at all. They banter (with each other, sorta made me feel bad for the other 3 in the band - they didn’t get much chit chat) almost as if there were an inside joke going on. April Fools perhaps?
The sound was terrible and I blame the venue, but what remained true if you strained through the feedback is the simple text I sent to Iman from the show: Ross was the Talent. Urie was the Face.
The music was light and fun with creative harmonies and interesting vocal shifts. They seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Although Jon felt compelled to complain he felt as if he had just had a bath and that it was too hot (dudes you’re not at the stadium tonight, you pulled up in a camper for fucks sake let's reel that in) he has great singing voice. That was a nice surprise.
Jon - "Well, our new album is coming out soon"
Ryan - "You mean our only album"
I guess he really did forget he was in a new band.
Mid-set they took the opportunity to do a nice arena style band introduction right down to the individual applause.
They didn’t really have room to move but they made do with what they had and they did so very well.
June 8th was the release date noted for the lp. I look forward to it now. I think it will have a summer feel to it, just a light background cruise sound. I hope anyway.
I’m stunned they don’t promote themselves as such (without exaggeration there were less than 100 people in that club when we finally got in). I’m beginning to think it's intentional.
I really liked them a lot. I liked the sound I liked the simplicity and I liked the smiles. There’s no Panic at the Disco, but there's new life in the Young Veins.

1. Have you ever heard a tornado siren? (I live somewhere where I get to hear them test the sirens every week)
2. How many languages do you speak! Or what languages would you love to learn?
3. Favorite thing to listen to when you work/clean/chill 🤲 show, podcast, album, audiobook, hand it over
Ask me (3) Things you'd like to know about me!
Yes! I used to live in Arkansas, USA, and we had the test tornado sirens every Wednesday at 12:00pm Sharp! I've also heard them go off in real life storm scenarios, which is actually terrifying. I lived in an area that was hit with severe weather frequently, but thankfully never saw a tornado!
I only speak one language fluently. I'm semi-fluent in Spanish! I am trying very hard to become fully fluent in it. Right now, I could save my own life if I had to in terms of my knowledge of the language but I couldn't hold a conversation with full and correct grammar and all that. After I finish up Spanish, I do want to learn Italian and French <3
Ooof okay, well I listen to a lot of things, and my tastes change frequently so it's really hard for me to pick like one specific thing that I listen to in the background. I watch a lot of youtubers, I listen to a lot of different artists (natewantstobattle, coheed and cambria, the ready set, head automatica, old fob/patd/cobra starship/the academy is/the cab, ect ect, switchfoot, and DISNEY MUSIC), I like to have disney movies on in the background or comfort movies like jurassic park! audiobook wise, I typically only listen to those when I go on long drives and I could give you a list. The Martian by Andy Weir, Jurassic Park & The Lost World by Michael Crichton, Sphere by Michael Crichton, Sang Spell by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Strange but True by John Searles, and then there are some Star Wars books that I love listening to, idk if you're a star wars fan so I'll save those as a follow up if you want to know about them!

in 2016 my friend posted photos of us at a patd concert on instagram and tagged the person photobombing in the background as ryan ross for the haha but then some ryan ross fan accs saw that he had been tagged in the post and started harassing my friend about it asking if he was really there and it low key caused fandom drama bc people started thinking ryan ross went to a patd concert. the end

If it's any comfort, there is actually an incredibly high number of people who came from 1D on this side of the fandom
I'm not one personally, but I'm a little insane and I've analyzed this fandom and one of those things I've looked too deeply into is where people came from and 1D is *high* on that list alongside sports rpf and k-pop and... yeah I have a problem
no i actually love that you’re so right too! seen a lot of phannies or patd enjoyers like I Know What You Are hehe. it’s kinda funny most of us have the same background. and tbh i am not ashamed of it, and i also think it would be very hypocritical of me to shit on larries lol so i just stay in my lane. but yeah basically being a larrie made me lose interest in the band itself and i don’t want the same thing to happen w dteam, i love all of them individually and also their dynamics as a trio and as duos so i’d rather not 100% believe something that could end up not being real yk
