Azula, looking at Katara and Ty Lee walking away: It’s nice that they’re getting along.
Zuko: Oh, yeah. Your girlfriend and ex girlfriend talking. That can only be good for you.
Azula: What do you mean?
Zuko: One of them broke up with you, do you really want her telling the other one why?
Azula:
Azula: You are a mean brother!
[ Zuko laughs. ]

This is what I think it would happen if Katara and Azula were telling people they’re dating:
.
.
.
—————————[Aang]—————————
Aang:
Azula: I think we broke him.
Aang:
Azula: I mean I killed him once but two times seems excessive.
Katara: I don’t think he needs that reminder right-
Aang: MONKEY FEATHERS WHAT WHY WHY HER OMG KATARA WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU SHE KILLED ME YOU WERE THERE AND-
Azula: I think I’m going to make some tea while he’s letting it out.
Katara: Bring some cookies.
Azula: Sure.
————————— [Sokka] —————————
Sokka [stepping closer to azula’s face]: Mmm.
Azula: What?
Sokka: What are your intentions with my sister?
Katara: Sokka please.
Sokka: Shh, I’m not asking you.
Azula: Sure.
Azula: She helps me to be a better person every day. She taught me how to love and how to love right even though I fuck it up on a regular basis. I want to be with her for as long as she wants me there. She’s strong, smart, caring and beautiful among other things. I just love her.
Katara [on the verge of tears]: ‘Zula
Sokka [crying]: That was…
Azula: Or maybe I’m a psycho and I want to destroy your tribe from the inside pretending I’m in love with the chief’s daughter.
Sokka: And there she goes.
Katara: She’s working on it.
————————— [Suki] —————————
Suki: She put me in prison.
Katara: I know.
Suki: She made our life a living hell.
Katara: She has changed.
Suki: People don’t change.
Katara: She was a traumatized, unstable and unloved child at that time. Believed me she changed.
Azula: Auch.
Katara: Sorry sweetheart.
Suki: …well I guess it’s your call after all.
Katara: Thank you.
Suki: Just one little thing… [looks at Azula] before you put me in that prison did you try to flirt with me?
Azula:
Katara: Azula?
Azula:
Suki: OMG how did you get Katara like that was so bad you had 0 skills
Katara: AZULA
————————— [Ty lee] —————————
Ty lee: Wait wait wait
Azula: For what?
Ty lee: Nonono wait wait wait
Azula: Are you having a stroke?
Katara: Maybe she is homophobic.
Azula: She’s a kyoshi warrior.
Ty lee: No but wait wait wait.
Azula: Agni
Katara:
Ty lee: YOU LIKE GIRLS THAT WAS AN OPTION AND YOU NEVER SAID SOMETHING FUCKING BASTARD YOU KNOW THE MASSIVE CRUSH I HAD ON YOU GROWING UP I TH-[and she kept screaming for a while]
Azula: We make the soft ones yell at us it must be some kind of achievement.
Katara: My turn to make the tea.
————————— [Toph] —————————
Toph: Congrats.
Katara: And that’s it?
Toph: What do you want me to say?
Katara: We don’t usually get a positive reaction at first.
Toph: I’m better than most people but I must say it’s kinda weird that you’re fucking a purple platypus bear.
Katara: What the hell are you talki-
Azula: And that’s why shes the only one of your friends I respect.
Katara: You’re both so freaking weird.
Toph: Don’t be ableist.
Katara: I AM NOT-
————————— [Zuko] —————————
Zuko: Katara I get why Azula is messing with me but you teaming up with her? c’mon
Katara: It is not a prank.
Azula: Why wouldn’t she team up with me? I make great plans, I conquered Ba Sing Se and I had made legendary pranks.
Zuko: Katara it’s not funny.
Katara: Zuko we’re not joking.
Azula: Do you remember the time I made you think you were a big turtle duck?
Zuko: Katara please.
Katara: Zuko.
Azula: Oh oh or that other time when I pretended I couldn’t see you so I made you think you were invisible and you went into the kitchen naked to steal sweets.
Katara: Wait he did that?
Azula: What can I say? I’m good at pranks, babe.
Zuko: STOP ALL OF THAT.
————————— [Mai] —————————
Mai: You told Zuko?
Azula: Yes.
Mai: And he thought you were joking?
Katara: Yup.
Mai: Ty lee?
Azula: Also yes.
Mai: So between them who is the one who keeps screaming? My bet is on Ty, but Zuko can really get that high pitch.
Katara: Zuko is still in denial and saying that it’s a prank.
Azula: And Ty lee is the one who keeps screaming how much I love woman and why nobody tell her sooner.
Mai: She was unbearable about her crush on you until she join the kyoshi warriors. Now I think she’s dating one of them but I guess she needs to let it out the repressed years somehow.
Azula: I don’t blame her I know i’m gorgeous.
Katara: And very humble.
Azula: You didn’t deny it.
Mai: If you keep flirting here I want to say that I have a new knife I want to test.
—————— [Zuko (Second try)] ——————
Zuko: ‘Zula drop it already. Someone was screaming for a while and my head hurts.
Azula: Zuzu I’m not fucking joking.
Zuko: Yes, you are.
Azula: And they said I’m the stubborn one.
Katara: You know what fuck it.
[Katara takes azula by the collar of her shirt and kisses her hard]
Katara: DO YOU BELIEVE US NOW?!
Zuko: I know Azula would go far for a prank but I didn’t think you would roll with it. Still, I don’t believe you.
Katara: For Agni’s sake.
Azula [looking at Katara]: so… what are your thoughts of public sex to prove a point?
Katara: Azula remind me why I love you cause I’m about to kill you and your brother.

It would be very sad if Azula, Mai and Ty Lee were asked about themselves during the war.
And Azula answered everything correctly about Mai and Ty Lee, because she is so obsessive that she wanted to know about them again.
But the two of them only answered questions about Azula's tastes when she was a child, not now.

One thing that newer Azula fans might not appreciate is how much the perspective on Mai and Azula's relationship has shifted over the past few years. Between the shows' ending and 2021 or so, it was extremely common for postwar fics, even Azula redemption fics, to depict Mai hating Azula with power of 1000 suns and never being the slightest bit open to having any sort of relationship with Azula other than trying to stab her. For instance, Maizula had only a handful of fics on fanfiction.net, while Tyzula had hundreds.
A lot of my early posts on this account were me going "wait, Mai eternally hating Azula doesn't make much sense."

Azula has made no progress since she was sent back to the asylum. Ty Lee believes she can help her, with proper disciple. Tyzula.
⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
CH31: Familiar Faces
Azula was not going to passively accept her reimprisonment and the Dai Li knew as much. Deep below the ground and covered in numerous stone hands, Azula fought furiously to free herself. As soon as she ripped one stone hand away two more would replace it. A circle of impenetrable blue flame surrounded her as she tried to melt the stone hands off herself. A set quickly flew to her eyes to cover them. She lashed out blindly in all directions. Blue flames filled the tunnels but it was no use.
A hand clamped over her nose and mouth. Azula struggled violently, her firebending becoming more and more erratic. The Dai Li were already reburying themselves in the dirt to protect themselves from their intense heat. Growing increasingly lightheaded from the lack of oxygen Azula sank to her knees. The flames flickered and died as she fell forward. There was a moment's pause before the Dai Li carefully reemerged from the earth. They kept their distance as they waited.
One earthbend a rock to Azula's left, letting it fall with a soft clatter. She didn't respond. Just as one of the Dai Li was about to take a step forward, another held their hand out stopping him. There was a sudden blinding crack of lightning that illuminated the whole tunnel. Several more stone hands grabbed Azula as two of the Dai Li fell. Azula was barely conscious as the constricting stone pushed the last of the air out of her lungs. Lights were popping behind her eyes as she passed out.
When she finally reawoke her head was pounding. Without thinking she unleashed a whirlwind of blue flame in all directions. It immediately hit the stone walls of her cell and dissipated. Azula rubbed her eyes and got to her feet, holding a small blue flame in her hand. She appeared to be in a small cylindrical room with no doors or windows. Her lip twitched in annoyance. Her prison had been earthbent around her. She placed her hands along the walls and took a slow breath.
If her prison was earthbent around her that must mean that the Dai Li had to be close by. Someone had to be monitoring her. She closed her eyes and focused on sensing the heat around her. She exhaled slowly. If someone was nearby she'd be able to sense it. Everybody gave off heat, their heart was the source of it, like a tiny beating flame. She inhaled as she felt out further. However, everything remained cold.
She grit her teeth. She needed to be patient. Someone had to be close by. They wouldn't have just buried her and abandoned her, right? She exhaled. The air around her felt heavy and stale. She swallowed. How were they ensuring new air was being pumped into her cell?
The minutes dragged by as she continued to feel nothing but cold emptiness around her. Azula's mind was racing as she tried to think of a plan. She knew she needed to remain calm as she could taste her own breath in the thick air. She sat down cross legged and began to meditate.
"How are there holes?" Aang said in confusion as he felt along Ty Lee's chi pathways.
"I don't know." Katara said, running cooling water along Ty Lee's feverish body. "Spirits?"
"But how?" Aang said, more to himself than Katara.
"Can we close them?" Katara asked. Aang furrowed his brow.
"I need to speak with my past lives." He said, letting his hands fall.
"Which ones?" Katara asked curiously.
"Yangchen." Aang said without hesitation. "She was a healer and dealt with spirits."
"Didn't Kuruk also spend a lot of time with spirits?" She asked as she remembered something.
"Yes, but he was mostly fighting them. I don't think he would know anything about healing though."
"But he's water tribe?"
"Northern." Aang said.
"Ah." Katara responded with some disappointment. "That makes sense." Aang nodded solemnly. "Who else?"
"I don't know, maybe Roku?" He said, shaking his head. "But he hasn't had much experience with spirits and admitted he's not the best healer…" He shared a meaningful look with Katara who sighed.
"I know you don't like talking to Kyoshi." She said bracingly.
"She's killed so many people." Aang shivered with disgust. "Like it was nothing." He glanced at Ty Lee. "But she does share a connection with the Kyoshi Warriors."
"Like when she appeared to Suki when she was imprisoned." Katara said as she remembered. "I didn't know your past lives could just wander like that."
"Luckily it doesn't happen too often." Aang said with a sigh as he sat down. He placed his fists together and closed his eyes. "Avatar Roku." He called softly. A moment later he felt a small part of himself tear away to appear before him.
"You seek guidance with healing the Kyoshi Warrior." He stated, his brow slightly furrowed. "I'm afraid my knowledge is rather limited in such matters."
"But you have to know something." Aang pushed. "Anything."
"Perhaps Kuruk would be better suited if you suspect spirit involvement." Roku said as he withdrew.
"Wait!" Aang called after him but he had already been reabsorbed. He huffed and focused inward. "Avatar Yangchen." He called. Instead of feeling his spirit divide he heard a voice inside his head.
"Let me see through your eyes." Yangchen asked. Aang nodded and felt himself detach from his body. Where he had once sat he watched Yangchen get to her feet. Katara's eyes widened slightly. She had seen Aang's past lives possess him before but it was still a somewhat unnerving sight. She looked down at Ty Lee and raised her hands.
"Kavik, the water." Yangchen said instinctively. Katara blinked. Yangchen looked up. "Ah, my mistake. The water if you please." Katara withdrew the water from her waterskin. "We need more." Yangchen said, chewing her lip as she looked around. She could sense a source nearby and blew one of the palace windows open. A large blob of water snaked its way in. Yangchen let it completely envelop Ty Lee. "I need you to hold it in place." She instructed as it began to glow faintly. Katara nodded and raised her hands. There was a long stretch of silence as Yangchen moved her hands back and forth. With each pass her jaw tightened.
"What is it?" Katara asked curiously.
"Spirits." Yangchen said bitterly.
"So a spirit did do this." Katara said quietly.
"Spirits." Yangchen clarified. "And they're still inside her."
"What?" Katara said in shock. "Why couldn't Aang or I sense them?"
"They're small. Very small." Yangchen said coldly. "Worms." She answered Katara's questioning look. "I've faced this spirit in four lives now. It seems he has grown smaller each time."
"Who?" Katara asked. Yangchen's hands started to shake. The glow of the water started to fade. Katara quickly sent the water back out the window as she rushed forward to catch Aang before he fell forward.
"Father Glowworm." Aang whispered as his eyes started to droop.
The air was growing heavier with each passing moment as Azula sat in her cell meditating. She could feel her heartbeat slow further with each exhale. Something in her gut was telling her to focus on clearing her chakras.
"Insight. Blocked by illusion." She thought to herself. What illusion was she failing to recognize? Her brow creased. What was a known truth or fact that she accepted without question? She found it hard to focus as the air grew thicker around her in her small prison. She opened her eyes suddenly as the revelation hit her. She wasn't imprisoned, not completely anyway, just her body. It was a strange feeling to step outside of her body and into the spirit world. A gentle breeze played across her face and she took a moment to breathe deeply. She had a plan.
Taking one look at her surroundings she took off. She needed to find a spirit. A big one. One that could destroy her prison by merely being pulled into it. She walked through vast empty meadows. Only the occasional small spirit flitted by. She clenched her fists as she kept looking. The unending landscape was starting to drive her mad. She glanced behind her. She couldn't tell where she had started from anymore. Everything looked the same as it stretched out in all directions.
Maybe that was just how the spirit world worked? She started to grind her teeth but stopped herself. Illusion. She closed her eyes. She was only seeing an illusion, right? She opened her eyes again and found herself at the base of a tall mountain. She didn't know why but she knew what she seeked would be at the top. Without hesitating she began to trek up the mountain. The landscape grew harsher the further she climbed. The plants became more sparse and the rocks more jagged and pointed. She stopped in her tracks when she spotted a familiar figure ahead of her.
"Grandfather?" She asked uncertainly. Firelord Azulon turned around. His face was as lined and weathered as she remembered it. His long white hair and beard cascaded down his gold trimmed robes.
"Ursa…" He said with a frown.
"No! No! I'm not her!" She said running forward. "I'm Azula, remember?" She said with half a smile. He looked her up and down then scoffed.
"Don't be ridiculous. Azula is a child." He said dismissively as he turned his back on her and continued walking up the mountain.
"That was years ago before you-" Azula trailed off. Azulon ignored her as he kept walking. "What are you doing here?" She asked as she sped up to keep pace with him.
"What does it look like, Ursa?" He snapped. "I'm climbing this wretched mountain so I can punish Ozai."

Day One of Tyzula Week: Role Reversal. What happens when Azula, ringmaster of the greatest circus the world has ever seen, messes up in front of Ty Lee, one of seven identical princesses of the Fire Nation?
"The show had been going so well. Azula had been swinging from the fire trapeze with the effortless ease she had every time for the past six years. One flip, two flips, and bam, she catches her acrobatics partner Azulon (please, don’t mention it. She knows.) from his own summersaults and they spin, their flames twirling in the air, the mixing blues and oranges eliciting the “oo”s and “aaah”s she’d come to expect from her adoring audience. She threw him aside and he lashed onto the pole that she had been swinging from moments ago, as she did the same for his, and they flipped until they stood in identical poses on their tiny platforms. They paused for the customary applause, before turning, and preparing to perform the dance that would send multicoloured sparkles and lights flying over the heads of the crowd. It was always the showstopper."

Azutara week: day 4, pregnancy
all with a little more context under the cut!
check under the cut for more details before voting, if you want to know before voting.
1 & 2: fairly self-explanatory, just one of them dying in childbirth. if this option wins, I can make a second poll to decide if it's an omegaverse situation, a spirits gift situation, or if we make it a donor situation.
3: if it's omegaverse (y'all, I'm obsessed with omegaverse, did you notice), the angst is through the roof because it's a past Maizula thing. the healers advice to not send her to an asylum/prison. it's a more pre-Azutara thing. Katara can help with healing or she's just the only other female beta around so they bond during the pregnancy. if it's not omegaverse, uh, it can get dark or maybe a drunk one night stand kind of thing.
4: Katara is in a relationship with Jet or Zuko, but cheating on him with Azula. He discovers the cheating and leaves her, all pregnant and alone. I didn't add Aang as an option because I think that even if he gets quite upset, he'd break up with her but stay around for their kid. Anyways. Azula steps up even if nobody expects her to.
They're all aged up, I don't intend to write any of them pregnant at fourteen.
(There's a 5th idea, it takes place in the same A/B/O AU where I make Ursa the worst parent possible. The thing would be mostly Azula coming to terms with stuff that happened to her & the repressed memories, with Katara there to help her and being quite the patient wife. But that would be way too dark for this event.
Like the original option for 3, where it could be a Maizula/Tyzula baby or y'know, a random ass guard doing stuff they shouldn't be doing.)

@tyzula-week day 6: Time Travel AU
Ty Lee-from-the-future comes to the past to prevent Azula's death! How did she do this? With the help of the spirits of course! For time is an illusion, and so are pants! (that's why i didn't draw below the waist)
Azula in true knight fashion, is willing to sacrifice herself in service of a higher goal if it's for Ty Lee's sake all the better. Ty Lee-from-the-now isn't okay with this and maybe shares more than she intended to...
Tried to go for a more stylized, well, style. I think it's not quite the ideal brush size vs figure size that i'd like. The expressions also don't quite match the tone of the dialogue. Neither does the style. Woops. I mean: that was totally intentional. The tonal dissonance is representative of the breakdown of causality. Definitely.

I Read Azula in the Spirit Temple
And here are my thoughts:
Azula and Ty Lee's interactions are the best part of this comic. I generally don't like Tyzula but see why it exists. Azula's most compelling actions are with her female friends. And this comic builds a compelling foundation for Tyzula because Ty Lee is actually in a position of power here, as the one who understands What is Going On whereas Azula is still in denial about everything. There's a reason here that she appears in the temple but appears to be the only thing that's real. They have a nice Batman/Catwoman dynamic here.
I was right when I said Azula was using the Fire Warriors, and here she tries to use the fact that she broke them out of the institution to keep them loyal to her, but the point, that we see over and over again in Azula's story, is that you can't win loyalty and love through fear. The other girls have become fed up with Azula and leave her, and by the end of the comic, Azula also realizes that it was her own actions that drove them away, which is why I think she decides not to pursue them. The shot at the end of her watching them together is sad because we know Azula really does want friendship and love, but she still can't let herself admit this. Instead she declares that she will find her own followers again, because "I always do." I'm actually quite fond of this ending. Azula gonna Azula.
On that note, one of the central themes of this comic is Azula's awareness that she is responsible for driving the people closest to her away. The gist of this comic is that Azula essentially finds herself in a lotus eater's dream, but rejects it because she knows it's not real. Azula's main conflict is her desire for recognition and love from the people she cares about warring with not just her feelings of her own self importance, but her desire for the truth. Even when the spirit gives her what she wants, she doesn't accept it because she knows it's a lie. This actually is a really good insight into Azula's character because we know Azula before the series finale was content with the lie, she was able to convince herself that fear is the only way. But now she's getting to the point where she can't do that anymore, even at the expense of her own happiness.
Azula repeating in her sleep how she will make the fire warriors pay like a madness mantra is hilarious, and the comic intentionally plays up her pathetic self-delusions of grandeur in a way that is reminiscent of Zuko yelling at peasants to step aside in the show while he himself is reduced to a beggar.
The spirit does seem to want to help her, but since what it shows is controlled by Azula's own mind, it can't settle peacefully, because Azula can't find peace within her own mind. Everything the spirit shows her is really a reflection of her own inner conflict.
There's an interesting bit where Azula calls the spirit out and says something like "do you really think what I want is lies and manipulations?" The ironic thing is that Azula has built relationships on lies and manipulations in the past. Ty Lee at one point says that they were never friends, and that she was happiest without Azula.
At one point, Azula blames Mai for "breaking up the team for a stupid boy who didn't even want her" Zutara supremacy!
Azula wants the people she cares about to acknowledge how they hurt her and seek forgiveness, but she can't make the connection that she needs to acknowledge how she hurt others and seek forgiveness. Azula convinces herself that people can't live without her because she's afraid to be alone.
I've talked a lot already about Azula's visions of her family and the memory of the first time her parents see her firebend. I don't have much else to add here that wasn't said before.
There's a particularly interesting part where Azula destroys the spirit's monstrous vision of Zuko (who tells her that she needs to seek forgiveness from the people she's hurt) and the vision of her mother responds with a horrified "Azula, what did you do?" as Azula is standing over the spirit vision of her brother, dead from her lightning. Azula quickly dismisses this as the illusion that it is, but it's an interesting image and calls to mind how Azula did strike her brother with lightning and nearly killed him. Since we know that the things the spirit shows Azula are from her own subconscious, could this be an echo of Azula feeling guilty for how she's hurt Zuko?
Azula says that everyone turned against her except her father, and he's now "a pathetic shadow" without his bending. This is interesting because it's the first time Azula has acknowledged any fault with her father. This comic is also the first time she acknowledges that her father made her into a weapon. She says that she's the only one left to carry on her family's legacy. She's clearly conflicted about these two thoughts and even when she gets close to acknowledging that her father was abusive, she then turns it around and blames her mother and everyone else for "abandoning" her, and won't acknowledge that Ozai lost his bending as a result of his own actions, and instead sees herself as the only one left of any worth.
Azula's mother keeps telling her that she loves her, and since we know that what the spirit shows Azula comes from her own mind, we know Azula knows this deep down. Even in the moments when she admits that her mother was not happy, she knows her mother was scared for her and that she did care about her.
Overall, Azula is compelling in this comic because she's a villain who doesn't know what she wants, and is very close to having that "I'm the bad guy," moment, but still resisting change. And I kind of love it, to be honest.
I may post some more coherent thoughts later, but I just wanted to get this down for now!

Au. No war. Azula at age 6 is far more powerful, stronger, and better. Trains and learned everything you could ever think of, fire lightning bending, all nations bending styles moves techniques and movements, swordman, chi, hth combat, martial arts, flight. Already have blue flames that have heat temp. C 3100, hides it from everyone, only showing gold flames, and not letting them know she already also mastered the lightning. (Can redirect lightning, and the dragon dance after secretly watch iroh do it once, managed to learn it in just 5 minutes). trains even harder that she already have indigo flames have heat temp. C 4200 at age 10. Then at age 14 can do violet flames that have heat temp. C 7100. Have scars, burns everywhere from training her heat resistance to the same level of her heat temp. And now also have hear resistance of C 7100. Invented fire healing after it and healed her body that scars, burns are barely visible (no fire benders can and could burn her, since she have the hottest fire and resistance to it, while theirs are not even hot to her anymore).... Fire family (all members) along with Mai tylee are in SouthernWaterTribe (already knows hakoda's family). When ozai challenges azula in a fight (not an agni Kai) for her disobedience, expecting that he would manage to burn and humiliate azula badly. All family members/water tribes/hakoda's family all watch since they can't stop it. At first azula just let him have fun, then proceed to beat the shit out of ozai (as they fight on the ground or flying (only azula) on the air (since ozai have limit), or should I say azula beating ozai). all ozai's attack (fire and lightning) are useless to her. The audience are speechless, stunned. At the end of the battle, azula doesn't even have 1 scratch at all, and not even tired... (Water tribes are happy that ozai got his ass kick, since they are tension with him). After it, as all of them are in a dining room, hakoda and Kya ask azula if she can teach their daughter some simple or basic waterbending moves since they recognized some on the fight earlier (katara are in awe when they tell her that some of those moves are waterbending). while fire family are still jaw drop since azula hides her real strength and power in the past.... Maizula tyzula azutara Romantic.
Hello, anon!!!
1. There is no war but there is tension among the nations. Ozai constantly says that war could break out at any moment and most Fire Nationals, especially the nobility, agree with him. Since they’re worried about a war, it’s expected that the children train and become stronger. Azula and Zuko are expected to train both because of a possible war and because they’re part of the Royal Family. Zuko is a decent firebender and trains as best he can but Azula hears that she needs to be ready to fight and runs with it. When she’s younger, she trains every second of every day. Even when everyone has gone to bed, she sneaks out of her room and practices her bending, learning as much as she can to prepare for the upcoming battle. Ozai catches her once but he doesn’t notice her blue flames that she was training with when he does. Instead, she quickly changes her color back to orange. (Ozai: Azula, what are you doing? Azula: Training! I wanted to master the Chameleon. Ozai, chuckling: That’s adorable. The Chameleon is far too advanced for you. You can learn it when you’re older. Azula: When? Ozai: Wait until you reach ten. But I do admire your determination. It’s exactly what I would expect from a Princess of the Fire Nation. Now, off to bed. You have your tutor bright and early in the morning. Azula: Yes, father). Azula decides not to tell him that she already mastered the Chameleon move two months ago.
2. Azula is seven when Hakoda’s family comes to visit. Azula has no idea why a Water Tribe family is coming to the palace when they’re, potentially, the enemy. Ursa just tells her and Zuko to be on their best behavior and not mention anything about a potential war or the tension between the Fire Nation and South Pole. Azula does her job, she keeps her mouth shut, but she doesn’t like that she has to sit across from a waterbender. After eating, their parents remain to talk while the kids go into the garden. After some back and forth, Azula soon realizes that Katara and Sokka aren’t like what she was expecting. They’re not mean or violent or destructive, nothing like what her father described. (Katara: Tag! You’re it! Azula: Are we allowed to use our bending? Sokka: No! That’s not fair! Katara: Yes! Azula, using her fire jets to launch herself forward and tag Zuko: You’re it, Zuzu! Katara: What was that?!? Azula:….Fire jets. I thought we could use bending. Did…was that not allowed? I’ve never played tag. Sokka: THAT WAS AWESOME!) By the time the sun has set, Azula finds that she doesn’t want to stop playing with them. She likes getting the chance to be a somewhat normal kid but also have people who find her advanced skills awesome not because they can get something out of it but because they recognize how great of an accomplishment it is.
3. Time goes on and the Water Family continues to come and visit. Azula and Katara end up spending quite a bit of time together since Katara is also a bender and is allowed to use the training arena to practice. The two spar from time to time but it’s most time dedicated to them working separately. During one visit, the two are sparring together and Katara accidentally trips trying to avoid one of Azula’s flames and falls onto Azula. The two look up at one another with blushes all over their faces. (Katara: I….ummm….I’m sorry I didn’t mean to- Azula: You don’t have to apologize. It was my fault for tripping you. But do you…do you mind getting off me? Katara: Yes! I mean no! No, I do not mind.) Azula only realizes after Katara leaves that she has a massive crush on the waterbender but she also realizes something else. Her father’s words about tension and an incoming war seem more and more like a well done lie.
4. One day, when Azula is 14, the family is together having dinner with the Water Tribe family. During the evening, Ozai starts talking about the Fire Nation military and talking about how it’s grown insanely powerful. His words make things tense and it’s clear that he’s using the to subtly suggest that Hakoda and his family have to support them if war does break out of risk being destroyed. (Ozai: Someone could get hurt *looks at Katara and Sokka*.) Azula speaks up before Hakoda does, angered that Ozai lied to her, threatened the WT and, most of all, angry that he threatened Katara. Ozai, obviously, gets angry at her as well for her disobedience and orders her to remain quiet. Azula refuses and Ozai challenges her to an Agni Kai. Ursa and Zuko try to step in on Azula’s behalf, both of them believing that Azula is a good bender but she would get destroyed by Ozai, and Azula refuses. She says that she is more than capable of taking on her father and they head to the Agni Kai stage. At first, it looks like Azula will lose. Only Katara notices that Azula’s skin isn’t being burned by Ozai and the entire fight seems too….easy for her. It’s like she’s an autopilot the entire time. Then, at the one or two minute mark of the fight, Azula starts actually fighting. She’s not only better trained and has more skills than him but she’s also faster and smaller than him and able to avoid his attacks a lot more. (Ursa: Should we stop this? Hakoda: Why would you? Azula’s winning.). The fight doesn’t even last another two minutes before Azula beats her father and is declared the champion.
5. The two weren’t really fighting for Fire Lord title or anything. Azula does take the opportunity to banish Ozai for almost getting them involved in a war and says he’s only allowed to return when he finds the Avatar. It’s a bit of humor on her part that she accuses her father of almost destroying balance and his sentence is that he has to find someone who’s whole just is balance. (Azula: Soooooo….who’s up for mochi?) When they return inside, Ursa and Zuko are too shocked to speak but Hakoda asks for her to help train Katara which Azula happily agrees to. When the water family leaves, they leave with Azula with rumors now spreading about the powerful Fire Nation princess.

Azula is training with the rest of the group cause her therapist ask her to do it. And she’s a great patient
disclaimer: this is years later (at least they’re in their twenties) bc one azula is in therapy; two i’m not comfortable doing some dynamics with literally children even though is nothing explicit
——— Aang
Aang: So let’s start with breathing exercises.
Aang: This helps to have a clear mind.
Azula: I usually do it too.
Aang: Really? That’s so grea-
Azula: Doesn’t help at all. But hey we need to breath in order to bend.
Aang: Meditation?
Azula: See awful things.
Aang: Aromatherapy?
Azula: The smell is awful.
Aang: What did you do then to have a clear mind?
Azula: You’re so funny avatar.
Aang: *looking at her worried*
Azula: So funny. So what’s next?
Aang: Call your therapist.
——— Sokka
Sokka: So first thing first you get a boomerang.
Azula: I would rather not.
Sokka: I hit you with a boomerang before, you have to learn how to use it. At least as signal of respect.
Azula: Just cause something hit you doesn’t mean you have to respect it or like it.
Azula: My father used to hit me and I don’t really respect or like him at all.
Sokka:
Sokka: I gonna hug you and then we’ll spare bare handed. Come here.
Azula: DON’T YOU DA-
——— Toph
Toph: *hit Azula with a rock*
Azula: *throws a blaze of blue fire to Toph*
[Keep doing this until both are clearly exhausted and dirty]
Toph: That was fun.
Azula: Indeed.
Toph: Let’s do it again sometime.
Azula: Sure.
——— Suki
Suki: You have to wear the kyoshi warriors’ makeup.
Azula: We’re training not on a mission.
Suki: I’m wearing it.
Azula: And I admire your bravery for wear that but no thank you.
Suki: To train with me you have to wear it, end of the discussion.
Azula: The last time I wear that filthy makeup I conquered Ba Sing Se.
Suki, raising one eyebrow: The last time I wear this filthy makeup I was trying to train with an ungrateful bitch.
Suki: So?
Azula: Ugh, but if I get a pimple I swear-
——— Zuko
Zuko: No dirty tricks.
Azula: You wound me Zuzu. I would never do something like that to you.
Zuko: You bend lighting at my butt to make me fail in front of dad. So sorry if I don’t trust you.
Azula: *sighs*
Azula: You were already failing, doing that father would laugh at the prank and not punish you for not knowing the forms.
Zuko: I-
Azula: And I admit it was fun. But that’s the truth. And my therapist says I should share my truth of that little moments, especially with you.
Zuko: I didn’t know…are you going to do it again?
Azula: Nah, now you won’t be punished if you mess it up. I’m going to do it while you are eating or something. Like a good sister.
Zuko: We are pretty fuck up, aren’t we?
Azula: At least we’re pretty.
Zuko: *smiling*
Azula: Wait no.
Zuko: Lala did you say we?
Azula, completely red: “I” I said “I” CLEAN YOUR DIRTY EARS!
——— Ty lee
Azula: You don’t going to force me to use the Kyoshi makeup, right?
Ty lee: Nope, that’s Suki’s policy I don’t really care.
Azula: Thank Agni.
Ty lee: I’m going to make you flex baby.
Azula: As if you didn’t know I’m very flexible.
Ty lee: Well we will see. Let’s stretch.
Azula: Do you usually use this as a first move or the flirt start after?
Ty lee: Nah, after. You will see it when we get to the-
Katara: DROP IT RIGHT NOW BOTH OF YOU.
Ty lee: Whao you were right she’s jealous type.
Katara: I am not!
Azula: Then why are you here?
Katara: To train with you, Ty lee’s training looks what I need right now.
Ty lee: Sure. It’s gonna to be awesome. But I’m going to focus on Azula. She asked me first.
Azula: She’s focused on my, sweetheart.
Katara: AND I’M TOO SO WATCH OUT.
Ty lee, whispering: And I don’t even try to make a move.
Azula, also whispering: And she knows I wouldn’t do anything. This is going to be fun.
Katara: STOP WHISPERING I’M HERE.
Azula, ignoring Katara: So what’s next?
——— Mai
Azula: So you throw knives and that’s all?
Mai: What do you want me to do?
Azula: I guess exactly that.
Mai: Maybe we could spicy up?
Azula, raising one eyebrow: I’m listening.
Mai: We need a target.
Azula: Living creature?
Mai: Why not.
Azula: Male or female.
Mai: Whatever.
Azula: Easy or hard?
Mai: Who’s on the hard level?
Azula: Ty lee or Aang.
Mai: And on the easy?
Azula: Sokka or Zuko.
Mai: I guess it’s Sokka’s turn.
Azula: Sure.
Azula: Hey Boomerang boy! If you stay in front of Mai with an apple on your head for 20 minutes lunch is on me.
Sokka: Steak?
Azula: Two steaks.
Sokka: But the good ones.
Azula: Of course.
Sokka: Deal.
Mai: Let’s have fun. Do you want to start?
Azula: I’m going to throw him a boomerang. So you first.
——— Katara
Katara: So listen.
Azula: I’m listening.
Katara: I want to see your hands clearly, not funny business.
Azula: But I am a funny person. And you love my funny business.
Katara: ‘Zula.
Azula: Ok. I’m focus.
Katara: I’m gonna to attack and you going to doge.
Azula: No warm up?
Katara: *throws her a warning splash of water*
Katara: There you go.
Azula: That wasn’t necessary darling.
Katara: No pet names, we’re training.
Azula: Of course. Master Katara.
[two hours later]
Katara: That was good.
Azula: I’m wet and partly freeze. All in a bad way.
Katara: As I said. Good. But you know the better part?
Azula: What?
Katara: I don’t want to see your hands now.
Azula: Why do you don’t…my hands…oh.
Azula: Yeah yes let’s do that.
Katara: You’re a less smooth than you think you’re.
Azula: But I’m hot.
Katara: And very humble.
Azula: Whatever…let’s the funny business begin.

i'm curious,what way you ship Tyzula 👀
I’m glad you asked! I really do like this ship and exploring the dynamic. The short answer is that I think they definitely had feelings for each other in childhood, but ultimately the relationship becomes mutually toxic and is something Azula needs to let go of as part of her journey to true healing. So I see Azula’s relationship with Ty Lee as an important part of her story, but not the end, if that makes sense.
I mean, there is clear attraction here:
Tumblr media
And I’m pretty sure Ty Lee is the only person Azula genuinely apologizes to:
Tumblr media
Like, there are definitely some strong feelings here. It’s just that people change—especially people like Azula—and sometimes that closeness turns into more of a codependency and becomes toxic for both characters.
I feel like I don’t need to delve much into Azula’s toxic traits because those are fairly obvious, but I think Ty Lee’s (often overlooked) toxic traits would play a role here.
Honestly, this could be a whole post by itself, but the summary is that Ty Lee’s ultimate toxic trait (and what enables her to be a villain) is her selfishness. It might be hard to recognize at first because she’s such a follower, but if you examine her actions and choices, Ty Lee ultimately does what makes her feel good without really caring about how it affects anyone else. She doesn’t question the war or what she’s fighting for because it doesn’t matter; all that matters is what best serves her.
Ty Lee likes everything to be happy and carefree and fun and overlooks problems in order to uphold that illusion. Azula would initially be very drawn to that because she probably would want to engage in that escapism early in her redemption journey, because she doesn’t want to think about the past. But the past doesn’t just go away, and ultimately Azula needs someone who is able to confront that with her and be able to support her emotionally. Ty Lee just wouldn’t, in my opinion.
From what we see in the beach, Ty Lee is very wrapped up in her own world and problems. She wants to feel unique and stand out, and I think she’s attracted to Azula because she gets that validation from Azula; Azula values her for her talents in a way most people don’t. But I don’t think on a deeper emotional level, Ty Lee could really be there for Azula. What I envision is Ty Lee talking Azula’s ear off, Azula getting exhausted from it, then in turn, Ty Lee gets upset because she feels like Azula isn’t giving her enough attention. And attention is definitely something Ty Lee demands a lot of. I also see Ty Lee getting uncomfortable when Azula tries to open up about something and ultimately leaving Azula feeling like she can’t open up, which is definitely not a healthy dynamic.
So basically, even though they have history together and some things in common, their personalities fundamentally clash and they can’t really support what the other needs. Azula at the end of her healing journey needs a woman who is kind and compassionate, but who also has a strong backbone and is willing to stand up for herself and others. Ty Lee just isn’t that person. She’s too much of a follower.
But that’s just my opinion on their dynamic, not trying to start discourse or anything. Ty Lee doesn’t have that much screen time so I recognize there are lots of ways to read her; this is just my interpretation.

another azula hc!
I know I've shipped azula with Mai in the past and I'm aware that tyzula is a popular ship, but I actually prefer Azula with an oc!
The oc/type of girl that I would have azula shipped with would be a person from the countryside who works on her family's farm I'm debating whether that's earth kingdom or fire nation but I'm leaning towards fire nation.
She'd 5'7-5'8, muscular, tan, long-haired blond butch with a thick country accent.
She'd be so kind, loving, patient, yet firm with Azula. She wouldn't let her lash out and disrespect others, but would make sure other people respected Azula as well. She'd give Azula all the assurance she ever needs whenever she needs it and be soft whenever Azula is hard on herself.
Azula would hate working on the farm at first thinking she's above that kinda of work, but her girlfriend who I have named Nessie short for Vanessa, long for Ness or Nessa finds a way to slowly ease her into farm life.
Nessie would start off by getting Azula to do the gardening. She'd then ease her into taking care of the horses, milk the cows, care for the chickens, and next thing you know Azula's living the country life and high-key loving it!
It gives her something peaceful, yet constructive to do and feels therapeutic.
She's falling in love with the simpler lifestyle and sometimes she does miss the rich girl life, but she knows that this is what's good for her and where she belongs with her Nessie. It's changed her a lot and has shifted her mindset into a completely different place.

Azula has made no progress since she was sent back to the asylum. Ty Lee believes she can help her, with proper disciple. Tyzula.

CH32: The Light Chakra
"Why?" Azula asked as she walked beside him.
"Why do you think, Ursa?" Azulon said, staring straight ahead, his face set in a scowl of disgust. "For demanding to take his brother's birthright just after he had just lost his son, my grandson, my only grandson…" He said as his eyes softened with sorrow.
"Lu Ten wasn't your only grandson-" Azula said, confused.
"He was! He is!" Azulon said glaring at Azula.
"What abou-?"
"Ozai," Azulon said, drawing himself up, "my greatest failure of an offspring, somehow managed to have an even more worthless son." Azula stared at him. It took her a moment to recover.
"Zuko isn't worthless." She began at once. "Sure, he can be useless at times but-" She reasoned.
"And now the royal line will come to an end." Azulon continued solemnly as if he hadn't heard. "If Ozai can't understand the anguish his brother is going through then I shall make him experience it first hand."
"Why?!" Azula demanded. "How does that make any sense? How would killing your other grandson fix things?"
"Of course you wouldn't understand, Ursa. He's your disappointment of a child. The blame lies on you and Ozai both." He said, looking at her contemptuously. "Who would have thought the joining of the two bloodlines would have created something so weak?"
"It didn't!" Azula argued.
"Do better on your next child." Azulon said, looking away. "And preferably not another useless girl like the last one." He said dismissively. Azula stopped in her tracks and Azulon kept walking. A moment later a bolt of lightning shot past his ear and shattered a boulder ahead of them. Azulon suddenly looked around. "Ozai!" He shouted as his fists were engulfed in flames. "Ozai!" Azula advanced as electricity crackled around her.
"Ozai's not here. I am." Azula said as a snarl curled her lip. She shot another bolt of lightning near him. Azulon narrowed his eyes.
"What trickery is this?" He hissed.
"It's no trick." Azula said as she let her own blue flames fill her open palms. Azulon looked her up and down as the revelation slowly struck him.
"So…" He said as they began circling each other. "You are Azula. All grown up after all these years." He punched his first forward and a blast of flames shot towards her. Azula easily leapt out of the way and sent a kick of flame at him in return. Azulon swatted her fire away as if it were nothing more than an annoying fly. "Then that must mean I'm-"
"Dead." Azula finished for him coldly before sending a wheel of blue flames towards him.
"So Ozai finally had the spine to do something himself…" He said gritting his teeth as he knocked her flame away again before countering with a volley of short fire blasts.
"Not Ozai!" Azula said, cutting through them. She hated the idea of her mother receiving credit but could not allow her father to receive it either. "A nonbender killed you. A weak nonbender killed the supposedly great Fire Lord Azulon. You died from drinking poisoned tea." She swept her leg, sending a wave of fire towards his feet. Azulon's eyes widened furiously as he dodged. "My father would have killed Zuko for you!"
"Then perhaps I should have had him kill all of his wretched children!" Azulon shouted before breathing a great tongue of flame. Azula propelled herself out of the way with flames from her fists and feet. She started to encircle him with a wall of blue fire. He kicked a hole through it with a blast of orange fire, only to have the blue flames resolidify around it immediately. Azulon shielded his face as Azula began to constrict the walls of fire around him. He widened his stance and stomped his feet down while extending both arms. The orange flames died as soon as they met the blue.
"To think I was named after someone so weak!" Azula roared as she flew down at him with a flaming kick. A hand caught her foot and threw her to the ground with surprising ease. Azula gasped as the air was knocked out of her lungs. She hurried to recover and turned back to face Azulon but he had disappeared. A new man stood before her. He looked young, like he was in the prime of his youth.
"So you're my great granddaughter?" Sozin said smoothly, looking mildly impressed. Azula let the fire in her hands die.
"Firelord Sozin." She said in shock. She quickly kneeled before him and lowered her head. Sozin laughed as he strode forward and held out his hand. Azula took it and got to her feet.
"You remind me of my sister." He said, looking at her curiously. "She wasn't a firebender, of course, but she certainly had the same inner fire. Walk with me." He said, turning around and motioning for her to follow.
"Where did Azulon go?" She asked as she fell in step behind him.
"It doesn't matter." Sozin said, waving a hand. "Tell me about the current glory of our nation."
"Uh…" Azula blinked. Was this all an illusion?
"Well?" Sozin asked, glancing back at her. "I see the bloodline is still strong." He said, flashing a grin. Azula shook her head to attempt to clear it.
"Yes it-" She was temporarily distracted as she noticed their change in direction. "Why are we heading down?"
"We don't need to climb this mountain." He laughed. Azula felt a twinge of unease in her gut. She didn't know why but she felt like she was going backwards. She needed to climb this mountain. She needed whatever was at the top.
"But-"
"So after removing the Air Nomads were we successful in removing the Water Tribes too?" Sozin asked.
"What?" Azula said, her brow furrowing at the implication. "You mean eliminating the waterbenders?"
"No." Sozin said with a cruel smile. "I mean permanently removing all those filthy backwater peasants." Azula slowed down.
"You wanted to wipe out their whole race?" She asked in disbelief.
"Then the Earth Kingdom filth next, obviously." He laughed as he stopped walking.
"Why?" Azula said, taking a step back. "It was one thing to kill all the air nomads, we could have just imprisoned them. But… but to completely kill-"
"The Fire Nation is the rightful nation to rule this world." Sozin said, watching a small flame dance in his palm. "We deserve to rule the world." He said, turning his head to glance back at her.
"Yes but-" Azula stopped herself.
"The Fire Nation is the best nation in the world, don't you agree?" He pushed, raising his eyebrows.
"It is but-"
"So, it should be the only nation in the world." Sozin smirked and closed his fist, extinguishing the flame in his hand. Azula felt sick but she wasn't sure why.
"The Fire Nation can still be great without resorting to such acts of needless violence." She argued.
"Can it though?" Sozin countered as he turned around.
"We can occupy the other nations without committing genocide."
"You seem clever." Sozin said, walking back to her. "You are my great grandchild after all, so let's think about this logically." He said, holding his arms open wide. "If someone disagrees with me and I kill them, can they still disagree with me?"
"They could also be imprisoned." Azula replied.
"Ah, and therein lies your mistake." He said, patting her on the shoulder. "If I imprison a man, could he not escape? Could others not help him escape?"
"If you kill someone, make them a martyr, then others-"
"What if I kill them too? What if I kill all of them or at the very least so many that no one would dare to disagree with me?" He said, gripping her shoulder. "Fear is the only thing that keeps people safe and in line."
"That wouldn't make the Fire Nation great…" Azula said, pulling away. "That would make us monsters."
"Who would call us monsters?" Sozin said, raising an eyebrow. "The Air Nomads certainly can't. The victors write history."
"It was wrong to kill the air nomads." Azula said, as her growing sense of unease deepened.
"Why? They can't oppose us. There's no one left to seek revenge." Sozin said, tapping his forehead. "Only the strong deserve to inherit the earth. It's the natural order of things." Sozin reasoned. He caught Azula's eye. "A world ruled by the strong can only get stronger."
"You wouldn't have just stopped at killing the other nations." Azula said as the horrible realization dawned on her.
"That's true." Sozin said, pleased that she had caught on so quick. "We would have to root out and eliminate any other weaknesses in our own nation. That way we could ensure a glorious and prosperous future." He shook his head. "I loved my sister. I really did." He said. "But if others were allowed to continue making the choices she did. Well, we need to ensure a rising birth rate."
Azula stood frozen to the spot. This was another illusion she had to overcome; That the Fire Nation was great, had always been great. That every choice it made was the right one, justified. The level of shame and pain that washed over her as her chakra struggled to break loose was unbearable but it wasn't over yet. She closed her eyes. She knew that when she opened them she'd face the final illusion holding her back.
"I've done nothing wrong." She heard her own voice echo back at her.
"Stop." She begged weakly as she opened her eyes to see herself standing before her.
"So what do we know about this Father Glowworm?" Katara asked as she and Aang sat pouring over scrolls. Aang pulled his head out of his hands and pulled a scroll aside.
"We know Yangchen neglected to arbitrate a deal between him and the humans polluting his tunnels. Kuruk fought him repeatedly because he started opening up tunnels between our world and the spirit world in retaliation. Kyoshi supposedly defeated him when she fought the false avatar." He said and felt a detached sense of disapproval. He pushed the feeling away.
"Kuruk's accounts say that the spirit got smaller each time he fought him." Katara said, tapping a scroll. "It didn't say anything about him dividing."
"Yeah, that's new." Aang said, rubbing his temples. "But then again so is a human and spirit fusing together."
"So Kyoshi didn't really kill him when she defeated the false avatar?"
"You can't kill a spirit." Aang nodded. "Yes, I know his name is Yun!" He snapped suddenly. Katara raised an eyebrow. "It's the name of the false avatar-" He tried to explain. He continued to feel Kyoshi's disapproval. He slammed his fist on the table. Katara reached across it to place her hand over his. "I'm sorry." He said looking up at her tiredly.
"It's okay." She said, looking at him sympathetically.
"It's not." Aang said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "My past lives couldn't deal with this and now I have to." Now he suddenly felt even greater disapproval coming from multiple past lives. He sighed. He couldn't stay angry at them. Not when he felt their regret too.
"Then we'll just have to come up with our own plan." Katara said bracingly. "We can learn from their successes and mistakes." Aang laced his fingers with Katara's and smiled weakly as he nodded. His eyes wandered over to Ty Lee. She looked unnaturally pale as she slept. Her face kept contorting as if she were trapped in an unending nightmare. Aang blinked slowly.
"I think I know where we can start." He said, looking back at Katara.
"Oh?" She said a little surprised.
"Yangchen just had a memory that made me think of something." Aang said, standing up. "We need to go to the North Pole."
"Agna Qel'a?" Katara said, frowning. Then her eyes widened. Aang nodded as she looked at him for confirmation. "I'll pack our things." She said getting to her feet.
