Mini-review:

I have to say I loved how batshit crazy and unhinged this drama is. You can never really know what it's going to throw at you next, and I feel like that's very hard to achieve these days. Beyond that, the drama makes brilliant use of its long single-take, real-time scenes, which make you feel like you're right there with the characters. The sets are also incredible, and they make the whole thing feel so claustrophobic (in a good way, I guess). On top of that, Jeon Jong Seo, Jin Seok Kyu and Chang Ryul give three show-stopping performances that certainly rank among the very best of their careers. Tbh, I can understand why many people disliked it (the characters tend to ramble, the epilogue feels very unnecesary and sometimes it gets a bit too crazy), but I personally enjoyed every second of Bargain.

Love in the Big City Part 2: The Weight of Homophobia

I’ve been struggling to write about this week’s episodes. The way Yeong feels so worn down by the homophobia around him feels suffocating in a way that I haven’t had to deal with in a long time. I remain impressed with the way this adaptation brought this story to the screen, and genuinely like many of its changes.

The Internalized Homophobia Suffocates

The first thing I noticed in this section was how much quieter Yeong felt. He didn’t have the pep in his step that had him and Mi Ae skipping through grocery stores together. He wasn’t dancing in the street. He’s spending a great deal of time with his mom, and now dating a closet case. The weight of all of his pain and suffering has seemingly dimmed his light. 

@impala124 summed up the comparison between the major relationships of Parts 1 and 2 well with “Part 1 was about the loneliness that comes with not conforming to societal expectations for Yeong and Part 2 was about the pitfalls of conforming to societal expectations and how it manifests in their actions towards others.” @shinjiikar1 further detailed how both his mom and Hyung hurt Yeong with their behaviors, particularly how Christianity plays into this. I find myself lingering with the sense of futility that the expectations of heteronormativity inflicts upon us. In Part 1, Yeong found himself unable to connect with Mi Ae and Nam Gyu because of their conformity to heteronormativity, and in this section both Yeong’s mom and Hyung try to enforce that heteronormativity on Yeong. 

With his mom, she had him committed to a mental institution when she caught him with a boy. However she may feel about that now, it’s clear that she will not engage directly with his queer reality. She expressed relief when she didn’t get to meet Yeong Soo, and she will not read his books. She toes a line for herself by taking clipping of articles about her son, and letting him find that she saved a picture of him with his then boyfriend, but she will never say anything else aloud. Their relationship is difficult, and I found myself returning to the final scene with Chiron’s mom in Moonlight (2016) when we left them in the park. 

With Hyung, I find myself thinking about @lurkingshan’s observations about the way episode 3 used familiar romance tropes to build up the relationship with hyung before crushing it in episode 4. It’s easy to see how the beginning of that romance with Hyung was so intriguing. Yeong was tired, lonely, and dealing with the slow death of his mother. He had removed the couch and TV from the apartment, making it clear he’s not doing any group fun in there anymore. It was inevitable that a closet case like Yeong Soo would let Yeong down, and I’m impressed that the show gained the same mortification in Yeong Soo writing that horrible article that I still feel about him sending Yeong an edit of his own goddamned diary. 

I can’t find the comment now, but I think @wen-kexing-apologist commented about how both Umma and Hyung are obsessed with appearances. Despite her declining health, Umma tries to maintain her physical appearance, and performs Christian sacrifice by writing lines from the bible. Yeong Soo wearing ragged clothes, carries a back, speaks on philosophy, plays sports, and more to maintain his masculine appearance, and only wants to be with Yeong where others cannot see him. It’s so exhausting to be inside of the closet, and the paranoia it inflicts on you is mind numbing. I’m so glad that Yeong wasn’t actually alone with this man in this version. Finally, I keep thinking about the way @solitaryandwandering noted that the ideas of ownership play heavily with everyone’s actions in this section. So much of compulsory heteronormativity is about what others think we should be doing for them, and how they wield shame as a weapon. 

Lastly, I want to comment that I appreciated the tasteful way the director chose to show Yeong’s darkest moment. I liked that we didn’t get close-ups or see his face, and I like that we cut away from the moment in his apartment to when he wakes up in the hospital. 

The T-aras Remain The Best Change

I was surprised when the show introduced them so early in Part 1, but I’ve grown to love the T-aras so much in this show. They embody perfectly the kinds of gay friends I had in my 20s. We couldn’t step into each other’s lives to meddle and fix everything, but they’re always there for you. They also have great instincts. 

It’s notable for me that they seemed iffy about Nam Gyu in Part 1. While much of that was likely them being catty about him being older, old-fashioned, and kind of a dork, they recognized that Yeong wasn’t actually into him that much. Nam Gyu was outside of the culture with them, and that builds in distance. In this part, they noticed immediately that they couldn’t tell if Yeong Soo was actually queer. That is a huge sign that Yeong Soo wasn’t going to be good for Yeong, because Yeong lives his life publicly. Yeong Soo doesn’t want people to know, and as such he would never vibe with the T-aras. It’s also notable for me that Yeong Soo never got to meet the T-aras, which at least Nam Gyu did. 

Finally, this show made me sob openly when they rushed to the hospital and fought with staff to get to their friend. Only family is allowed to be in the room, but they would not let their friend go without him knowing that they were there. It’s so scary when you’re in the community because of how death stalks us, and I love this change to the story. The version of Young we get in the book is so unwell that he doesn’t think about all of these people around him, and I love this version of the story showing that he was loved. That his friends cared about him. When he flashed that heart sign to them and they answered back, I cried. I’m crying now even as I think about that moment. Queer friendship is so important to me, and I really love the way the adaptation expanded the role of the T-aras.

Anticipating Gyu-ho

I find myself feeling a small sense of dread about Gyu-ho’s entry into the story. We’ve seen two pairs of relationships in Yeong’s life fail because of compulsory heteronormativity, and I just know that seeing Yeong be unable to build something long-term with Gyu-ho on screen will devastate me. The losses and wounds Yeong has taken from all of the previous history will seep into his relationship with Gyu-ho, and it’s not going to be pretty.

The things that are stuck in my head and the topics on which I'll probably write meta about are -

Yeong's relationship with Mi Ae and Young Soo-- The beginning of both the relationships has a dream like quality to it. But, everything begins to fall apart as he realises the value he holds to the other person.

When Young Soo tells Yeong that upon seeing him with his mother in the park from a distance, he thought that they have a good relationship, Yeong replies with something like 'Is that so?'. I can't help but think that Young Soo would say the same about his and Yeong's relationship.

Then the door to the roof suddenly open . Hee-rak and Illha entered the space who seemed amused by the sight of something happened previously .

"The teacher fell earlier right?"

The boys notice the girls and acknowledge both Bora and Hana with a greeting.

"You two keep invading our teritorry ." Ilha pointed out the two girl and turned to Y/N" And you too.."

"...Well, the roof doesn't have your name on it, does it?" Y/n remarked rolling her eyes lazily , walking near where her belongings is on the chair beside Hana .

Bora rise from her feet , walking towards Ilha reaching out for something on making the man brushed Bora's hand away and backing up . "Whoa , What are you doing ?"

Bora open the case, finding that there are five cigarettes inside.

Y/n walks down the stairs toward her class, and almost reached it when she spots Ae Sol rushing past her.

"Ae-Sol, eodi ga ..." Y/n tries to call the girl's name, but she moves too quickly for Y/n to catch up to her and continue the conversation.

Y/n reached the class and meet with the buzzing atmosphere of her classmate . She walked through the back door and is greeted by Jang Soo , who sits near the door .

Y/N went to her seat , placing her tote bag down on the table as she burried her face relaxing her eyes .

As the first bell rings, Ms. Park enters the class holding something in her hand. Y/N, who is still resting her head rise when she felt her hair being messed by Ilha who just came in .

"Yah saekiyya " Y/N turned at him mumbles a phrase towards the latter as her frustration at being interrupted fills her face.

Illha looks at the girl with a smirk and amusement, clearly taking pleasure in messing with her hair and disrupting her peace.

Ms.Park then entered the classroom carried something in her hand which seems like a papers .

" I have a gift for all of you today " Ms Park said earning a cheer from the student , curious of what the gift is .

" Mock exam results from September " Ms Park announced lifting the report card as the cheer died down quickly."There is one more gift" she adds "I'll hand it out according to the score ."

"Silence, silence, silence" Ms Park calls for the class to quiet down, knocking the table to regain their attention, " First of.." she begans " first place in our class and our school is....Yeonghoon "

"Round of applause " The class was silent with only a few students clapping including Y/N " Wooo jaraseeo hoon-ah" the girl cheered from her seat to her brother , earning a side eyes from the students . If she's not the one cheering for her brother then who's going to??

After Youngsoo name been called out for a second place , the girl knew she's not going to be in a top three as she did not do very well on the previous exam . Matter of facts that she's sleep an hour after the exam started . But when her name being called by Ms Park she was too stunned to speak , confusion filled in her face .

" Y/N congrats on passing in a few places " Ms Park complitment the flustered girl as the student giving an applause .

Y/n rise from her feet walks toward the podium receiving her report card thanking the teacher repeatly .

Ms Park handed all out the report cards and holding out the last one "All right . Two last places tied . The grand finale." she said preparing to announce the two students in last place .

"Gosh, let's protect the last places !" Ilha and Hee-rak exclaimed in their seat . "Protect what? They're just these two . II Ha and Hee-Rak , hurry up and come out" The two boy look at each other and went to the front of the class to collect the result as they applaud themselves and proudly receive their report card . "Gosh, what's there to clap for? "

'Woah , crazy ' Y/N on the other side still stared at her result feeling unbelievable of her own achievements "Yah Y/N , I didn't expected you to stole in my place " Yojung the girl seat infront of her joked making the girl playfully roled her eyes .

Suddenly , something crashing at the back of classroom making all the head turns only to see Younghoon bag was kicked by Illha.

"Hey , the two of you ! " Ms Park scold them , Ilha turns as he apologize and retreat to his seat .

"To all teachers inside the school building , everyone , please come to the Administration Office.

Repeating one more time.

The students looked over the speaker in confusion . Ms Park dismissed the class as she told the students to get ready for their classes . Before leaving ,Ms Park instructed them to hand over they phone before she walked out from the classroom . After Ms Park stepped out from the class once again the room filled with a whispers and murmurs from the students curious of what's is happening .

Yo-jung whose her front seatmate rise from her seat , moved to the class podium and picked up the cell phone storage box underneath the desk as she started collecting the phone from the other students . While Y/N walked to the back of classroom picking the thrown bag , brushing the dust off and give it back to the owner .

"yeogi.." Y/N holding out his bag as he takes it from her grasp " Yah...why is he always bothering you?Tsk.." Y/N mutters enough for her brother to hear as he watched illha ordering Chi-Yeol around . "Don't start it , Just go back to your seat n/n"

"Y/N have you hand your phone ?" The class president suddenly came cutting her words

" Oh yeah wait ," she replied glanced at her brother before went to her seat handing the phone in to the class president .

Just then the front door opened, Ms Park entered the class followed by Chi-Yeol behind her who seems to be caught on the process . The students all returned to their respective seats wondering why Ms Park entered the class though it was the first period . Ms Park then stood infront the class looking hesitating before addressing them .Y/N who at her seat feeling somewhat uneasy about it .

"Everyone"she starts as the silence erupted the classroom "It looks like this year's early admissions will be canceled."she continued . Confusion filled in their face likes a moon crashing into the earth in their face .

"Sorry?"

"What does that mean?"

"What kind of nonsense is that?"

"M-ms Park! Is that true ?"

"Ms Park , what's the matter?"

"Are you really sure?"

"is it also canceled for other schools?

"What about people who applied for early admission?"

"In order to prepare for such events,please understand the issuance of National Mobilization Law . Beside active duty soldiers , enlisted candidates , reserve force..all male and female adults up to 24 years old and the current third-grade high school students will also be drafted. "

"What's military training and what's extra credit for?"

"Silence "Ms Park yelled gathering the students attention " Quiet down" "Just as he said if means you'll be doing both military training and school classes at the same time. The government said third grade high school students are only enlistment candidates " she paused glancing around the student

"So...lets not worry to much " And again silence took over the classroom.

"Yoo jung , hand these out please .

Ms park gives out military agreement forms to the class president .

Yo-jung took the paper and start handing it to the other students.

"They're military training agreements take them home and show your parents,"

Once Y/n received the paper , she scanned and examined through it's and lets out "this is crazy"

"Are we going to stay together?

"What happens to people who dont consent?"

"It's not concern but you'll most likely by taking a remote classes"

"How much extra credit do we get? Are there different amounts of extra credit you can get?"

"More details will be release later, I'll share it with you as soon as the Department of Education policy comes out." Ms Park continued

"What certain is that extra credit is only given to those who took the training make sure to get them signed if you'll participate"

"Ms park what about the acting and film majors"

"Does that mean we're going to war?"

"Is the world going to end? " Y/N said so sudden making all eyes toward the girl who seem flustered of what's happening . " YAH"

As the students still busy mumbling among themselves Ms Park stepped out from the class . Leaving a small protest from the other students .

Y/N stand up from her seat heading toward Kimchi and Deok-Joong place where in Taeman was also there too seating on Deok-Joong desk .

"Come on , it's embarrassing to fight balloons. " Taeman confidently said when so sudden Y/N appears from behind slapping his shoulder " Yah , it's might be a normal balloon but who know it's something more than that?"

" Ooh it's could be though " Kimchi agreed with the statement " Well that's okay Taeman-ah i know you scared but that's okay , im too ." she confessed

Then sudden a fight broke out with Ilha and Yeong-hoon who in the middle of heated arguemment . The two boys shoving and sending a punch to each other . The desk was thrown to the side , desk and chairs were scattered . The classroom was in chaos . The students try to intervence when the fights showing a signs for not stopping . Y/N who try to jumps into the scene trying to stop the fight only to stopped by Taeman . As the student managed to separate the two the fight came to an end though there still yelling and cursing profanities to each other .

"It's the military, yadera.." Deok-Joong from the window finally spoke making the class all rushed to the window .

"Yah hoon-ah..." Y/n rushes toward her brother to check up on his injuries. "Gwenchana?" She reaches out to touch his face, trying to get a better look at the cut, but he swats away her hand and storming out of the class, leaving his sister in a state of concern. The girl only sighed staring at the space where he just left and turns just to see Ilha who's now staring at her . Y/N only shakes her head and went to the window looking out what going outside .

Mini-review:

I love space movies, especially when they're well-made, and The Moon pretty much ticks all the boxes for me. Tbh, the story is not original at all, and I feel like we've seen it in many other films over the last decade. Luckily, the director made sure to keep things as engaging and entertaining as possible. On top of that, the production values are fantastic. I have never seen better CGI in a Korean movie, and the sets are just stunning. That being said, the thing that truly carries this movie is the acting. This cast is full of top-notch actors, but the clear standout is Do Kyungsoo. He goes all in with his performance, and he's the main reason why you care about everything that happens. So, to sum up, The Moon offered me all that I wanted from it: a well-acted and enjoyable popcorn movie about space.
