“Has anyone told you you look just like Lee Byung-hun?” Jungbae asked again when they sat down. He looked a little flushed. He and Sangwoo probably had a few drinks before Gihun arrived. He had introduced them to each other six months into his old job at the car manufacturing place. As it turned out, Jungbae had gone to a nearby highschool and they’d quickly become drinking buddies. That had been nearly a decade ago. Sangwoo didn’t come to Ssangmun-dong often, but when Gihun got the occasional text message that he was back in the area, they would all grab food and drinks together. “A few, yes,” Inho admitted quietly after an awkward pause. “Really?” Gihun peered intently at his side profile as Sangwoo poured them drinks. He was very good-looking, but Gihun didn’t watch enough movies to know about too many actors. He liked Jung Woosung, but that was because Eunji had been obsessed with him and forced Gihun to watch all of his films with her when they’d started dating decades ago. “Mhm,” Park Jungbae whipped out his phone and searched up an image for Gihun to see. “Look, they’re practically twins.”

It's nothing... I'm just thinking about how jung-bae almost immediately forgave gi-hun for ghosting him. he saw his best friend in pain and knew he had his reasons. he didn't hold a grudge and went straight back to being his friend again.

now gi-hun probably blames himself for jung-bae being there in the first place. if he didn't ghost jung-bae, he might have known jung-bae's debt was that bad and that his life went to shit.. then he could pay off his debt and jung-bae would be far, far away from the games.

jungbae things i like:

when he votes O and immediately feels so guilty and awful about it + scared of gihun being mad at him, so he goes and puts himself in the naughty corner and daeho has to drag him back over lol

the one scene where he's crying and apologising to his wife in his sleep (WHY DON'T PPL TALK ABT THIS MORE. WHY DON'T I TALK ABT THIS MORE MYSELF, FOR THAT MATTER)

how he immediately cups gihun's face and grabs his hands to make sure he's real when they first meet again

the scene where he gives his bread to junhee and is like "take it..... i don't deserve to eat :(" but then when daeho is like "well in that case can i have your milk too" jungbae just fucking glares at him

in general the way that him and daeho are a comedic duo. ppl often characterise them as having a father son type dynamic but that's wrong imo. they're more like a younger coworker and an older coworker comedy duo from a sitcom who are constantly slacking off and getting into shenanigans together. they would get matching tattoos and shit i think. brothers 4 lyfe

how he was 100% the more normal, calm, serious and emotionally well-adjusted friend in the gihun + jungbae duo pre squid game (i feel like jungbae often gets characterised as the silly sunshine one and gihun as the serious one bc of their dynamic in s2, but i think that jungbae was 100% a kind of rock/steadier calming influence for gihun pre squid game, from what we see in ep1)

Junhee: Looks like we had the same idea.

Jungbae: Inho, please tell me you didn't get Gihun a cat as well!

Inho: ...I got him a kitten.

*Later*

Gihun: [grinning, surrounded by cats in his apartment] This is the best birthday ever!

I can’t stop thinking about that conversation Gi-hun and Jung-bae have while on watch, the one that manages to pull out the Gi-hun everyone knew before the games. His entire demeanor transforms, as if it were sitting there beneath the surface, only with something heavy and suffocating weighing it down. His eyes widen, light up as they’re unburdened for just a moment with the thought of saving everyone from an ending like his. It’s just Gi-hun in the moment again, his tone of voice drawn out in that almost bemused, whining sort of way, playful and bantering. There’s hope to it. When Jung-bae mentions getting soju after the fact, even though when he says it he’s not sure he entirely believes he’s getting out alive, Gi-hun allows himself that second, one where he and Jung-bae do get out, and do get those drinks. Where he can regain those snippets of normalcy where he’s laughing with a friend, and maybe he could heal, slip back into what had always been natural for him, and not this darkness inherited from the friend who had died in his arms.

I also can’t stop thinking about how In-ho took this away from him. Maybe you could call it the games taking it away, not In-ho personally, but he did wield the gun. He could’ve made a choice to turn that gun around, to point it at the rest of his soldiers, or even himself. But he chose to do what he did, and it tore away the last shred of hope Gi-hun had of ever really returning to who he used to be, even if it had just been fantasy, of keeping something old and familiar that kept that light tethered. Helped remind him that he wasn’t alone, that it didn’t always have to be this way. But the games, the Frontman, they punish him by waiting until the very last, hopeful 'he'll be back with the magazines' moment, then abruptly pull away that razor thin rug. With these remnants of his past ripped away from him, what else is there for Gi-hun to do but continue to suffocate? Get crushed by that heavy thing, pulling everyone he can out from underneath until it’s only him left laying there. No light left.

ok hear me out, problematic age gap situation with this 20 year old hoodlum Gihun and deputy police chief Inho who's in his 40s

(and Gihun's younger than Junho 💀)

Imagine him drunk on the side of the road, recently fired from his job, watching the police do a raid on an illegal human trafficking ring. Inho's only there because it's Junho's first time leading his own SWAT team, and Gihun drunkenly wolf whistles at Junho in his uniform (he actually can't see shit because it's so dark). Inho mistakes him for an amateur prostitute and goes over to lecture the kid. Gihun not only talks back and calls him an ajusshi to his face, he also makes fun of Inho's height.

And then he gets the shit kicked out of him and cuffed in the back of Inho's SUV. Junho comes out of the raid and sees Gihun in the back of the vehicle thinking he's gonna show up at the police station later, but Inho decides to take him elsewhere and teach him a lesson.

Some 𓀓𓂸 later, he decides he would like to apply to become full-time sugar baby to this short expressionless ajusshi so he doesn't have to keep slaving away in the factory like a normal person.

Ok but Jung-bae and In-ho both bringing up the fact that Gi-hun has changed.

Jung-bae's not a fan. His chatty friend that he hasn't seen in years is now this too-grim, too-serious, tortured guy who's taking on the responsibility of trying to saving 500 450+ people (whoops originally posted this with 500.) The guy who used to get soju with him at the drop of a hat while telling him/complaining about every single detail of his day is now someone who hasn't called him in years, didn't even find it in himself to tell him his mother had died.

So he intentionally riles Gi-hun up until he's complaining the way he used to and gets him smiling and laughing, giving him one moment where he can stop being so grim. Gives him a sliver of hope - getting soju after they get out of the Game together, just the way they used to when the most immediate dangers were loan sharks breathing down their necks.

And In-ho takes a completely different route, approving of Gi-hun's change but maybe thinking he can still improve, and going with a more "I can fix him (make him worse)" sort of approach. He even gives Gi-hun the same sliver of hope about getting a drink later when they're free, except he's saying it knowing he's going to betray Gi-hun at some point and have every person of his little group (namely one Park Jung-bae) killed
