To Fall Apart, To Reunite
a Runaway!post-Mira’s ceremony And Returning!pre-Antonio’s Bruno Encanto-AU
Completed Work; 9/9 Chapters; ~20k
Bruno has left behind the Encanto and the Madrigal name. But he never quite shakes the legacy, and when his village is attacked and his family threatened, he steps up.
History rhymes, but doesn’t repeat.
Sustaining an injury only Julieta can heal, his family sets out to bring him back to the Encanto.

I've got a very mixed relationship with TV Tropes. They banned me twice for no real reason, but I can't stop admiring their archive of tropes. This is what a work page for my "Encanto" fanfic, "Cracks in the future", would look like. (Some of these tropes also fit the canon characters in the movie.) This fanfic is set in an alternate universe, where Bruno has a wife (Míriam) and two kids (Teresa and Víctor).
A - L
Adaption Personality Change: Downplayed. There's a bit less emphasis in this fic on the weirder things, that Bruno will do in the movie. This is partly because most of it is told from Teresa's point of view, and she's a Daddy's Girl who won't find him strange. But it helps as well that he's happier in this fic than in most of the movie, and it makes his anxieties less pronounced and easier to control. That said, it is made clear that Bruno still manages to weird other people out. Abuelo Gonzalez (his father-in-law) actually wonders if he's "right in the head", and Pablo is forced to admit that he can see why people would find him "odd". But still, while Bruno is likely to cover his face with a hood if he's out in public, except if Míriam is there to pull it down, he will never wear a bucket over his head here. And he still has rats as pets long before it would be seen as normal, but his two alter egos Hernando and Jorge are never mentioned at all in this fic. And even him being superstitious is only mentioned exactly once.
Adaptional Angst Downgrade: Bruno is generally much happier in this fic than in most of the movie. It is true that he still deals with the pressure from his mother, and with a bunch of judgemental villagers. But it's noted that him meeting Míriam has improved his life a great deal. He never hid from his family for years either in this fic, since he could talk to his wife about his visions and had two kids to raise. Bruno and Míriam decided to simply not reveal what he saw in Mirabel's future. That made his mother furious with him, but he didn't have to become a hermit…
The Alcoholic: Tía Malena's husband Enrique is described as a violent drunk, and nobody in Malena's family likes him.
All Work vs All Play: This is what Míriam and Malena were in their younger days. Míriam preferred to stay at home and help their parents in their shop, but Malena would be out dating different guys instead.
Almighty Mum: When a bully's father is about to start attacking Bruno's door, Bruno can't do much except take his crying wife into his tower, and tell his kids to go to their rooms and hide there. And as soon as the man attacks the door, what saves the situation is that the door gives the attacker an electric shock, and that Abuela Madrigal arrives and tells him and his wife off. They try to make it look as if everything is Bruno's and Teresa's fault, but that doesn’t work at all. Abuela Madrigal only tells them to leave. And naturally, they must obey her.  * As a matter of fact, people respect Abuela Madrigal so much that Teresa can use it. She learns that if Pablo's father keeps on slandering her and her father, her bringing up her abuela is the only way to make him stop.
Ascended Extra: Bruno has never hidden from his family for a decade in this fic, where he becomes the beloved father of protagonist Teresa. So he naturally has lots of screen time here, that he didn't have in the movie.
Awful Wedded Life: Tía Malena is clearly unhappy with her marriage to Enrique, who's described as a violent drunk who nobody in Malena's family likes. Also, Pablo reveals to Teresa that he wonders if his parents even still like each other. Both of these cases are in contrast to the three happy Madrigal marriages.
Bespectacled Cutie: Mirabel happens to be the only family member except for her father, who needs to wear glasses. She's also the only Madrigal kid to have no gift and struggles with that.
Beta Couple: Julieta and Pepa are already dating Agustín and Félix respectively, when Bruno and Míriam get together in the first chapter. It is later revealed in the second chapter, that Julieta and Pepa are planning triple dates. And later on in the story, the three couples have been married for 22 years and are still friends. * Dolores and Mariano become this to Teresa and Pablo by the end of the story. It is a case though, where the Betas get together later than the Official Couple, since everyone had just expected Mariano to propose to Isabela, while Dolores had hidden her feelings for him.
Big Sister Instinct: Teresa manages to save Víctor from a group of mean bullies, and it's revealed that Pepa used to do the same thing for Bruno.
Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Abuelo Pedro was killed during an attack right after his kids were born.
Bookworm: Bruno is hardly fond of being out among people in public, but he will still take his family on regular visits to the local library. It is noted that he was an avid reader as a young man. So now, it is important to him to encourage his kids to read. And it worked especially well with Víctor, who loves to go to the library. However, Teresa will borrow a book or two as well.
A Boy, A Girl, And A Baby Family: Dolores is 21 years old, Camilo is 15 years old and Antonio is the baby of the family at five years old.
Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Bruno becomes a downplayed example when Teresa meets Pablo. Bruno is clearly uncomfortable with it, but he still is more nervous than aggressive. And he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Pablo, he is even able to apologize for acting weird, and acknowledge that Pablo is the first person who isn't a family member, who will respect him. As soon as Teresa asks her parents if she can bring Pablo to her room though (she promises that they'll only talk, but they would be alone together in her bedroom), Bruno has to warn him that he can't do anything "improper" to her.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Bruno and Míriam as he is as gentle to her as she is to him. They were also both lonely before they met each other. However, Bruno was extremely unhappy until then. And he still has his anxieties and a bad reputation. Míriam managed to see that he wasn't dangerous though, even if she was the only girl in the Encanto to be willing to date him. Nowadays, it is her job to help him deal with whatever his problems are… * Pepa and Félix are a gender-inverted example. She is very hot-tempered and overly emotional, and it became his job to calm her down (and it's a very important job, since Pepa's mood controls the weather in the Encanto).
The Bully: A gang of them attack Víctor in an alley before Teresa can stop them. One of the bullies who insults their father gets what he deserves though…  * It is revealed that Bruno also was attacked by bullies when he was younger, and that Pepa had to strike them in their heads with lightning.
Bumbling Dad: Mirabel's father, Agustín, is clumsy and always attracts bees, but he does love his wife and his daughters dearly and will do anything for them.
Canon Foreigner: Míriam, Malena, their parents, Teresa, Víctor, Leonor, Pablo, Pablo's family and Enrique are all characters, who don't appear in the movie.
Clashing Cousins: Teresa and Isabela are never able to get along. But then, Teresa suddenly has an epiphany that Isa almost accepted a loveless marriage. And it makes her feel sympathy for her at last…
Daddy's Girl: Teresa is very devoted to Bruno and won't let anybody insult him (and that is what most of the villagers do). She is very adamant about assuring that he's right about all of his visions. Her theory is that she got the same gift as him for this reason: Since she loves her father so much, she can't imagine having a different gift…
Demoted To Extra: This happened to several of the characters from the movie. Mirabel is Teresa's best friend and still an important character, but she's not the protagonist and will not appear in every chapter. And as much as Julieta, Pepa, Agustín, Félix, Camilo and Antonio are still there, they only get a few lines each. When it comes to more minor characters from the movie, like the kids who pestered Mirabel, Señora Pezmuerto and Señor Flores, they are still around as well, but they're not named and don't get any lines. Osvaldo Orozco Ortiz is an aversion though, as he is in the spotlight in one scene.
Disappeared Dad: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life to save all the other villagers, when they were attacked when his three kids had just been born. Not only did this traumatize his wife Alma (a k a Abuela Madrigal), but it's clear that Bruno (who was the only boy) also struggled a lot as he didn’t have a father.  * Nobody has ever found out what happened to Teresa's cousin Leonor's father. He seems to have just disappeared one day. So he must have either been killed, or he found some way to leave the Encanto and abandon his pregnant fiancée.
Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Mirabel and Dolores end up with this dynamic, when they're in the same scene together. Mirabel is very bubbly and talkative, Dolores is calmer and much quieter.
Fiery Redhead: Tía Pepa is red-headed and really hot-tempered. Her mood is what controls the weather in the Encanto.
Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Míriam had become the responsible sister, who preferred to stay at home and help her parents in their shop. Malena would be out dating different guys instead. Even as they've reached their middle age, Míriam is Happily Married and described by Teresa as a perfect wife and mother, while Malena is stuck with a violent drunk and is very jealous of her sister.
Freudian Trio: The three middle-aged women in the Casita form a trio like this. Pepa is really hot-tempered (the Id), Julieta is the calm and responsible sister (the Superego), while Míriam does her best to be the perfect wife and mother, but she can still start crying and lose her temper (the Ego).  * This is true for their husbands as well. Félix is jolly and extroverted (the Id), Agustín is calm and more composed (the Superego), while Bruno is introverted, but will often show emotions like sadness and anxiety and shame (the Ego).  * And naturally, this is true with the triplets too, with Pepa as a hot-tempered Id, Julieta as the calm Superego and Bruno as the introverted but nervous Ego.
Generation Xerox: Míriam got really scared the first time she saw Bruno's eyes glow green, and it made him plead with her to not leave him. Years later, this is repeated but gender-inverted with Teresa and Pablo. He is very startled when he sees her eyes glow green, and it makes her plead with him to not leave her. * Pablo's mother says that Teresa reminds her of her mother though. But later, Pablo reveals to Teresa that her eyes will look sad even when she's smiling. And that's a trait, that she's apparently inherited from her father.  * Víctor is very much like Bruno, which has become notable to lots of people. Both of them are described as having a melancholy and nervous personality. Their pictures that hang next to Abuela Madrigal's door are nearly identical. Both of them are also into writing stories and theater and have rats as pets. * But a lot of this might go back one more generation. As soon as Pablo sees a painting of Abuelo Pedro, he says he thinks that Bruno looks a lot like him. Bruno and Víctor are also implied to have inherited their writing skills from him.
Generational Trauma: Abuela Madrigal watched her husband get killed during an attack. And it made her think that her kids and grandkids have to work hard, and produce new generations of Madrigals, so the magic and their protection from new attacks will stay strong. But it makes her do things like allowing the villagers to slander Bruno, pushing Mirabel to the side until she feels unloved, pressuring Isabela to think that she must enter a marriage that she doesn’t want, and Luisa to think that she has to work hard until she almost burns herself out. Teresa is mostly left alone until she meets Pablo. But then, Abuela Madrigal makes it clear that she wants great-grandkids. It is only after the Casita crumbles and the magic is lost, that a healing process can begin…
The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Míriam and Malena have a responsible vs irresponsible divide, and not a smart vs pretty divide (even if Míriam is the wiser out of the two, and Malena is described as having been the more popular sister). But still, Malena seems to see her whole life as just a competition with Míriam. Malena is very bitter and jealous since Míriam has a better life than her.  * Mirabel and Isabela are unable to get along, and Mirabel and Teresa love to mock Isabela for being so haughty. But they can reconcile after Isabela reveals her secret: she was only going to marry Mariano to please Abuela Madrigal.
Glowing Eyes: This is what happens when Bruno or Teresa looks into the future. Their eyes will glow green.
Good Parents: Teresa and Víctor feel that Bruno and Míriam definitely are this. Teresa adores her father and admires her mother, just as much as Víctor adores his mother and admires his father.
Green Thumb: Isabela's power is that she can grow plants out of nowhere.
Happily Married: Teresa is glad that she grew up around three happy marriages (Bruno/Míriam, Pepa/Félix and Julieta/Agustín), but she can also describe her abuelos as being devoted to each other…
Hidden Depth: Even if Teresa didn't quite agree with Mirabel that Mariano was a "dumb hunk", she is very surprised when she learns that he's a poet.
Honorary Uncle: This story has an inversion. Normally, Teresa and Víctor would have called Tía Malena's husband "Tío Enrique". But nobody in Malena's family likes him because he's a violent drunk, so nobody has taught Teresa or Víctor to think of him as their tío. He is therefore referred to as just "Enrique".
Housewife: Zig-zagged with Míriam. She devotes a big chunk of her life to just taking care of her husband and her kids, and that is clearly what she wanted. However, she likes to run her family's shop too after she gets a chance to do so. Still, she is ready to stop working there after the magic returns.
I Am Not Pretty: Teresa is very surprised when Pablo actually calls her pretty. What she thought was that Isabela was the pretty one.
I See Dead People: Víctor's power is that he can both see and hear the spirits of the dead.
I Want Grandkids: Actually, Abuela Madrigal is pushing for great-grandkids now. This is very justified though since she believes that if the Encanto will survive, there must be new generations of Madrigals to keep the magic strong.
In-Series Nickname: "Mira" for Mirabel, "Isa" for Isabela and "Juli" for Julieta. Antonio and Pablo are called "Toñito" and "Pablito" by their respective mothers. * As a way more negative example, Bruno is known as "Bad Luck Bruno" among the villagers. It is even used by his brother-in-law Enrique, but he's not portrayed in a positive light anyway.
Jacob and Esau: Pablo is clearly his mother's favorite, and Pablo is convinced that his brother Manuel is their father's favorite.
The Jinx: Most of the villagers consider Bruno as one of these. They think that not only can he see the future, but he will make all kinds of bad things that he sees happen. Teresa is later accused of causing an elderly woman's death as well…
Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Mirabel and Dolores swapped their mother's roles. Mirabel is bubblier than Julieta, while Dolores is quieter than Pepa.
The Lost Lenore: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life during a war. That is when the miracle was born, but it has truly traumatized his wife, Alma, who saw it happen in front of her eyes. As the years went by and she became best known as "Abuela Madrigal", she started to put a lot of pressure on her kids and grandkids. She thought that this was the only way to keep the magic strong, and it would give them protection from new attacks…

Miguel Rivera has known all his life that his no-good great-great grandfather abandoned his family, only for his Mama Coco's godfather, the now world-famous musician Ernesto de la Cruz to step up and make sure that the man's family were taken care of. He intends to be just like the man who, even after death made sure that Imelda's family lacked for nothing.
This belief is challenged and upended one fateful dia de los muertos.
(Or, Ernesto felt so much guilt over what happened to Hector that he did everything short of confessing to the murder to make sure that the wife and child Hector loved so much were taken care of.)
Moon Knight (TV 2022)
Weird Untitled Demigod/Avatar of Khonshu AU
Summary:
After Arthur Harrow betrays Khonshu and leaves his post as his Avatar, the embittered god decides to take a page out of his father Amun-Ra's book. Instead of choosing his next Moon Knight from amongst humanity, he will create them himself.
For Marc Spector and his system, this changes nothing.
(It changes everything)
Crossovers:
Percy Jackson & Harry Potter Crossover:
The Sea Witch Chronicles (possible series)
Summary:
The tale of Morgana Jackson (fem Percy), the monstrous daughter of Poseidon and Sally Jackson, starts with a girl named Ursa Black, daughter of Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix Black. A girl who was presumed dead until Sirius finds her name on the tapestry, alive and with no death date, with the names of two young girls just under hers.
Twice Born/The River Maiden
Summary:
Poseidon never meant to break his oath on the Styx, not after seeing what became of Zeus's daughter. But when the woman carrying his newest child died two months after their encounter, he was driven to save the unborn child, leaving the elder wizard half-brother to his own fate.
No one was ever meant to know the true origins of Poseidon's newest naiad daughter, Lorelei Jackson (fem Percy) and how she came to be in her mother Sally’s care, until a resurrected Lily Potter takes an identity test which reveals that she has a second child.
Harry Potter and the Son of Zeus
Summary:
Instead of meeting and being wooed by Poseidon, Sally Jackson, daughter of Voldemort and the reincarnation of Danäe, meets Zeus that fateful summer at Montauk beach. She gives birth to the reincarnation of her own son Perseus, slayer of Medusa and son of Zeus. Unfortunately, Voldemort is the reincarnation of Acrisius, long dead king of Argos and Danäe’s father.
And he has a score to settle with Sally's son.
Mortal Son of Immortal Gods
Summary: Harry Potter gets the shock of his life when he learns that his parents were the mortal incarnations of the god Zeus and Titaness Leto. Shenanigans ensue when Artemis and Apollo, Zeus and Leto's divine children decide to step out of the shadows and take a much more active role in their baby brother's life than they had previously.
The Order of the Phoenix and Why you don’t anger a god.
Summary:
“Once upon a time the man who would one day be known as Lord Voldemort had a granddaughter. Said granddaughter ran away from the magical world after becoming pregnant with a non-magical hybrid of man and god, and was never seen again.”
When the Order of the Phoenix learn that Sally Jackson is Voldemort’s granddaughter, they come to forcibly collect her, her children and husband to keep them “safe” from Voldemort. Percy disagrees with this.
And perhaps more alarmingly, so does Poseidon.
Coco & Monsters, Inc. Crossover
Hymns for the Missing: Edwin and the Terrible Day at Work
Summary:
A small one-shot I cooked up for an au where Damario and Ana survive and get to raise Harmonia. Which is very unfortunate for a poor scarer employed by Monsters Inc. in Monstropolis.

Note
dolores headcanons?
Sure thing! Here’s some Dolores headcanons:
Dolores’ full name is Dolores Victoria Estrada Madrigal
She claims that she’s named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom
She started talking very early for babies
Her first word is “Papí”
Young Dolores was very curious and asked lots of difficult questions
Most people (including Dolores) don’t think she’s like her mother, and they are wrong
Agustín taught her piano up until her gift ceremony, in which case Señor Molina (from my fanfic: The False Madrigal) took over and taught her every instrument she could get her hands on
Her first reaction to her gift was “Abuela, Isabela and Luisa are kicking each other”, and then she started crying from the noise
If you couldn’t tell, she is a bit of a tattletale
She was that pupil in school
She was really excited to be a big sister
But enhanced hearing and Camilo are a horrible combination
Dolores very passionately complained about babies for the next few months and tried to convince Bruno to adopt her, so she could move into his tower to be further away from them
When Mirabel was born, she went straight to her parents and asked, “Why does everyone hate the new baby? Like, what did she do? She’s not even cried yet. Is she dead?”
She changed her mind about babies upon spending time with Mirabel, who was just as quiet as she was
She and Isabela would switch their siblings around, in the hopes the adults wouldn’t notice
Félix taught Dolores sign language for when she got too overwhelmed
Dolores didn’t want a vision from Bruno because everyone says they’re bad, but Isabela, who already had hers, kept badgering her to get one
Needless to say, she was right
She would cry to her parents and question if anyone actually loved her
She initially thought Bruno’s disappearance was a prank (as she could still hear him in Casita)
Has a passion for music, of all cultures and any point in history
Every birthday she would ask for a new instrument
She was a child with expensive taste
Her favourite instrument is the bandola
She was the lead singer in the church and school choirs during her teen years
She wasn’t the first person to find out Pepa was pregnant with Antonio, she was the second; first being Bruno
Was one of the people who wasn’t pleased with baby Antonio, though that was mainly the age gap and noise
Definitely receives favouritism as the only daughter (additionally, she’s not a chaotic shit)
She loves opera
Loves romance novels
Definitely the child who read “Romeo and Juliet” in class and decided she wanted to be Juliet
When Isabela started dating Mariano, Dolores didn’t really know who he was
It wasn’t until Isabela demanded her help writing back responses to his love poems that Dolores fell in love
And realised that Isabela screwed her over again
As time went on, Isabela stopped attempting to write back and just gave the letters straight to Dolores for her to deal with
She isn’t solely to blame for spreading gossip, her side of the family is shit at keeping their mouths closed
She is the type of person to drop spoilers with no warning (books, theatre, rat telenovelas, etc)
She really wants to go to Italy one day
She is pansexual
As a teenager, her colour was more of a pinkish red, to be more like Abuela
In spite of everything, she has a great admiration for her grandmother and wants a close relationship with her, as she does with Isabela
Eventually she gave up trying to be Isabela’s copy and just accepted being second best
Her jewellery were gifts from her parents
She is an adult with expensive taste
Dolores has a collection of earmuffs
She makes at least one trip to Julieta a day to get healed for some form of headache from the noise
She frequently answers questions for Mirabel to be helpful. However, she can be very blunt and (prior return of magic) monotone, making her appear cruel and uncaring
Dolores did not mean to throw Mirabel under the bus during the dinner scene
Though she doesn’t always clearly show it, she loves her brothers dearly
She describes Mirabel as her metaphorical sister and would swap her with either of her brothers within a heartbeat
She thinks she should be part of Isabela and Luisa’s competitions of who is Mirabel’s better sister. But, then again, thinks they probably don’t allow professionals
Is probably the only grandchild that should be allowed and would do well at running Encanto after Alma. However, she does lack a little bit of compassion (see this post)
Her and Mariano properly got together several months after he and Isabela broke up
They did, however, get married within the next two years
Making them the shortest courtship out of all the Madrigals, since Alma and Pedro
Speaking of, Alma fully gave her blessing to the pair of them as they were truly in love
Mariano does want children, but has never outright demanded a lot or an exact number and would be grateful with whatever - Dolores’ comment of five was only to mess with Isabela
Dolores does NOT want five babies. One or two is fine
She definitely has triplets in the future

i wanna go home so bad but i still have hours of work left and then a trip to my parents' place so i'm posting this instead of working ✌️
(thanks @threefill for the distraction💜)
What ship were you completely obsessed with as a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?
magnus bane/alec lightwood (yes i read the shadowhunters series don't @ me i was like 13 lmao)
Which ship would you consider your first one?
first serious ship that i actively read fics and such for would definitely be jesse mccree/hanzo shimada from overwatch
i miss og overwatch 😭😭😭 i played so much of it and it was so fun before the game went in a different direction
Your first fanfic was about which couple?
bruno madrigal/my encanto oc, milo castaño 💜 not that i ever. finished it or plan to post it anywhere, i had no plot in mind so it's very rambling and disjointed 😂 i really should write Something for them at some point lmao
Do you remember the first couple you saw fan art of?
magnus and alec again 😔 but after that def more mchanzo stuff, also a lot of genji shimada/zenyatta
Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?
my guys (gender neutral) i am perpetually exhausted as it is do you think i have the energy for arguing over barbies 😂😭 about the only "discourse" i get into is whining about the lack of Gay Bruno Content in dms lol (something something what do you mean i have to be the change i wanna see in the world)
Did you use to have any NOTP or have one currently?
not that i can think of!!!
Who were the last couple in the last fanfic you read?
uhhhhhhhhh i don't. remember lmao, i read a lot of random kink fics from various fandoms and i don't know any of the characters bc encanto has none catered to me specifically and i Cannot post my own with milo and bruno bc 😳😳😳 no one is allowed to perceive that side of me, and people would likely recognize milo's character even if i changed up his name lmao
(maybe one day i'll just throw all my fucks out the window and post something. prolly not but who knows)
Currently, do you have any OTPs?
bruno/milo 😌✌️ and also bruno/milo/javi, as well as just milo/javi bc me and @sionnaach are Very Normal about our sons and shove them in 38496948272 different universes (our sons include bruno, we stole him from disney, he is Ours Now)
Is there any couple that, to this day, that you are extremely mad about not getting into?
nah
Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they're kind of interesting?
hmmm not that i can think of 🤔
Do you have any ship that, in the past, would have been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?
i don't think so 😂 hope not anyway???
What is your favourite crack ship?
bowser/luigi ✌️ i have a cute zine of them even
What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?
still mchanzo, nothing will top them most likely 😂 i was obsessed with them for years, there's still one fic i read during college and it hasn't updated since??? 2016????? but someday hopefully 🥺 i would love to read more of it, it was amazingly written (popcorn redemption by wyntera if anyone's interested ✌️)
What do most of your ships have in common?
gay gay homosexual gay
What do you absolutely hate in a ship?
themes of dubious consent/gaslighting, that sort of... angsty genre of fics/shipping??? idk how to articulate it exactly 😅 i just like more fluffy couples, it's so weird to me when one character is like. abusive or manipulative under the guise of love and people eat that shit up (not a negative judgment, just not my scene and i can't personally wrap my head around the appeal)
if you read this far and wanna play, consider yourself tagged!!!!! i wanna hear about your ships!!!!!!!!! >:3c

Everyone keeps saying that Bruno being Mirabel father makes sense, but I say we add another layer to this. Not only is Bruno the father of Mirabel, but he is also the father of Camilo. The three of them share a lot of traits with one another, plus the angst with Camilo being scared of Bruno would be even more angsty, food for thought yk?

Herding Cats
Chapter 29: Herding Cats
Summary:
You can love your family and still want to throttle them...just sayin
Bruno wondered how long it would take for his mother to appear. There was no doubt in his mind that she would. He looked up at the ceiling and saw there were branches running along the corners of the room. He hadn’t noticed that before. Casita really had done a full reset of his room. He remembered with a touch of regret that they were one of the first things to fade as his mother’s opinion of him started to change.
What did Mirabel see in him that his own mother had not? It made him wonder how or even if that would affect his Gift. The fact that he didn’t feel the least bit nervous about having another ‘sponty’ as he referred to those visions was foreign to him. He watched Pepa fuss with the cuff of her robe, in the past they would all have been drenched by now. She and Juli were talking like he hadn’t just announced they were potentially the bane of his existence and that made him realize that he was not sad. Content maybe? Bruno smiled when Pepa said, “She needs something to do besides killing her grandkids with kindness, anyway.”
“But we don’t want to worry her unnecessarily,” Julieta said.
“Bruno wouldn’t be having this type of vision if it wasn’t something we needed to know now.” Pepa said flatly.
“Tell us everything you remember Bruno, maybe there was something you missed,” Félix said.
“Yes, see if you can focus on the one you say looks like Alma,” Agustín offered.
They all seemed to be waiting for him to do something so he picked a knothole in the branch above his head and stared at it. The recording finished and Bruno tried to focus on what he’d seen earlier. Lots of trees, mist, people…one turned and seemed to look directly at him, and everything went green…
------------------
Agustín was off his chair and next to Bruno before he could hit the floor. “Juli! Pepa!” Both women turned and Juli immediately went out the door, Pepa knelt near him and held his head in her hands. “Bruno, can you hear me hermano? Bruno, can you hear me? Please wake up.” Bruno remained as he was, eyes glowing green and Pepa saw him mouth was moving slightly and thought maybe he was speaking to someone unseen. The drizzle that had started when she knelt stopped abruptly as she thought, that’s new. Bruno gasped and came back to himself. The glow faded from his eyes, he blinked, and he looked at Pepa and he had the barest of smiles.
Juli dropped the teacup and spoon upon seeing Bruno awake making Pepa start and let go of his head. It dropped all the way to the floor with a small thud. “What happened?” Juli asked.
Pepa realized she just dropped her brother’s head and said, “Sorry, hermano,” He really was smiling and Pepa growled and gave his face a gentle shake. “This better not be one of your sorry jokes, Bruno Madrigal. Dios Mios, I think my heart will beat out of my chest,” she said as she took a few deep breaths. When she sat back, Félix was, of course, right where she needed him to be. She let her fear evaporate like the cloud above her head.
Julieta had picked up the pieces of the teacup and the spoon and was no longer in the room. Bruno got off the floor with Agustín’s help and sat slowly, if a bit shakily, into the high-backed red velvet chair. He was looking at the still open door. Pepa turned and saw Isa and Dolores there looking nervous and confused. Guess the cat’s out of the bag now. Félix helped her up, she waved the girls in and she and Félix returned to their spots on the sofa.
------------------------
Juli returned and handed Bruno another cup of her tea. She sat at the end of the sofa next to Agustín’s chair, leaving enough room on the sofa for Isa and Dolores who sat down both craning their necks to take in his room. Bruno took a sip of the tea and his hands, again, immediately stopped shaking. It tasted better this time too. Bruno took a longer drink of the tea and watched his still open door. The vision he’d just had was not about the lady in the forest, it was of this moment. Best get on with it then. He set down the cup, got up and went over to the door. They were all watching him, but Bruno moved forward, knowing full well there was something he needed to do. Something he’d been avoiding for a long time.
Standing in the doorway, he put a hand on the door frame and tapped it five times with his fingertip. She was out there, just beyond the light of his room. She seemed hesitant to move forward, waiting for something. Bruno realized what that something was and it was something only he could give her. But he needed something first, was it still there? He found it more easily than he would have thought possible. Right where he left it all those years ago… still there, not lost. That place in his heart that held all the love he ever had for her. In that moment the wall he’d created to protect himself from her started to crack for there can be no forgiveness without love. He believed it now, she was not who she was before the breaking, and neither was he. Time for something different.
“Please come in Mamá,” Bruno said gently, holding out his hand.
She stepped forward hesitantly and took it and asked, “Are you alright, Bruno?”
“Yes, thank you,” he said.
She stepped in and looked for all the world like she was about to cry at the site of his ‘new’ room. She was one of the few that had ever seen it like this. Bruno guided her to the chair he’d just got up from she looked at all the assembled faces and she said to him, “I’m sure you know why I’m here, Bruno. What do you think we should do?”
That was not what he was expecting her to say. He reminded himself again, she’s not who she was and said, “Well, I can tell you or I can show you. It’s up to you Mamá.”
Alma did not hesitate, “Show me.”
--------------------
Alma sat back in the chair and waited and watched as Bruno set about collecting the 'things' he thought he was going to need. When Juli and Pepa realized what he was about they both got up.
"Bruno, what are you doing?" Pepa asked, storm cloud forming, even though she knew full well what he was doing.
"I'm doing what Mamá asked me to," he said and turned around and said to Agustín, "You might want to go sit with Mirabel. This might, no it will wake her up," he said this in his matter-of-fact way and that caused Julieta's face go pale.
"What are you going to do Bruno?" she asked.
Isa was off the sofa and said to her parents, "I'll go Pá, Doli can tell you if I need help with Mira."
Dolores nodded, and Isabela was out the door.
"Answer my question, Bruno," Julieta voice was now tinged with anger as Bruno continued his gathering.
Pepa answered with a note of fear in her voice, "He's going to do that," her cloud got noticeably darker.
"No discussion? Just like that?"
Agustín and Félix had their heads together were speaking in low tones. Dolores, still sitting on the sofa was hugging herself and her knee was bouncing in an attempt to calm her nerves.
Alma got up from the chair and put a hand on both Julieta and Pepa. Both turned to her and she said, "Don't worry, mis hijas, I do not believe we will see anything imminently troubling. Bruno, will you really need all that?"
Bruno looked at the small pile of things he'd set on a small table near an alcove and shrugged. "I just want to be prepared."
"Maybe you should rely more on your own strength and not the things…"
"What are you saying Mamá?"
Alma smiled and said "Perhaps, given the current state of the magic, you should begin again."
Bruno at first did not appear to understand what she was getting at, but something caught his eye and he raised an eyebrow and nodded as he said, "Alright, I'll try it your way."
"Santa Maria," Pepa said threw her hands up in the air, a blast of hot wind made Alma and Bruno turn toward her and Julieta. "Were you two even going to bother to ask if we wanted to have any part of this?"
Julieta nodded in agreement and she said, "Bruno, you still haven't answered my question. Why this?"
"Because, like you've always said, we are strongest together."
Julieta's eyes narrowed and she growled at him. Pepa put a hand on Juli's shoulder and said, "That's bullshit and you know it, Bruno."
Dolores let out a squeak and the husbands were staring, mouths open and Alma just sighed and said to herself, "Ay, no." She had forgotten how volatile Bruno could be, especially when he was dealing with his sisters.
Bruno paused and seemed to remember something and said "Fine, will the pair of you please assist with this vision. I'll try not to let happen what happened the last time." Julieta's growl deepened and Pepa, arms crossed, teeth clenched let loose a lightning bolt that hit the carpeted floor right in front of Bruno. "Let me rephrase that," Bruno said rubbing his arm while looking at the still smoldering spot on the carpet, "I won't let that happen again?"
Julieta spoke first, "No, no, and just no. I've had enough. Good night, Bruno," and she stalked out the door. Agustín got up and gave Bruno an apologetic shrug then followed his wife. Pepa looked over to Félix and he too rose from his seat and followed his wife out the door. Dolores, forgotten and alone on the sofa, eyes wide, got up and said, "I guess I'll go get Isa," and disappeared into the hallway.
Bruno instantly relaxed, went to the door and closed it. He turned back to his mother and said with a wry smile, "Well that was easier than expected."
"You know Bruno, you could have just asked them to go."
"Maybe. But it would not have been nearly as fun. Besides they've been babying me all day."
----------------------------
Isabela stopped in front of her sister's door and carefully examined the jacarandas there. They looked different than when she had grown them earlier. The colors were deeper, and the flowers shone in the pale light of the hall. Isa had tried to imitate the design of Mira's name her sister had embroidered on her favorite mochila bag and had to admit it looked pretty good.
Isa quietly opened the door and went inside. Expecting to see Mira's room as it had existed before, her breath caught as she closed the door behind her. Isa pulled a blanket from the drawer that opened nearby then sat on the sofa. Looking around at all the spaces Casita had created for Mira, it made her wonder what Gift her sister would have gotten if that door had opened for her. How lucky for her it did not. Mirabel had developed so many other talents in her quest to gain acceptance that Isa felt that old twinge of jealousy that had fueled her previous interactions with her. But the animosity she used to feel was gone, instead all that remained was the love.
The door opened again, and Isa was surprised to see Dolores waving to her. Isa got up and went into the hallway.
"What happened?" Isa whispered.
"Nothing." Dolores shrugged.
"Nothing?"
"Tío was just trying to get everyone out of his room," she said and started toward her room. "I wonder what he did that got that reaction from our mothers."
"Clearly nothing they'd care to repeat," Isa snorted as she walked next to her.
"Well, our moms have been hovering around him all day, like he might break," Dolores said rolling her eyes.
"We should just go to bed, parents are exhausting," Isa said, and Dolores nodded.

Encanto Fanfiction
The In-between by Gozzer
The mountains surrounding Encanto were tall for more than one reason. Those forests and jungles were teeming with life that needed protection from the things on the outside. A layer of thick magic protected both the village and inhabitants. It was a hum in the air that settled in a soft tingle over your skin. Protecting you from the things on the outside.

My Favorite Encanto Fanfics:
“Collapse” - Camilo doesn’t make it out of Casita when it collapses and gets hurt. TW for graphic description of injuries. Gives Camilo a bigger role and gives me my angst that I so crave.
“Beyond The Truth” - Camilo discovers just how tiring shapeshifting is and Bruno has a vision about his sobrino that makes him sick. TW for child abus3, s3xual assault, attempted r@pe, r@pe, d3pression, implied s3lf-harm, m0l3station. Extremely well written, and once again, angst.
“Don’t Worry, I Gotcha” - Camilo does a pretty good Bruno impression and gets an angry mob chasing after him and falls into a River. Tío Bruno to the rescue. Well written, dives into Camilo’s and Bruno’s relationship, and dRaUmA.
“Creature Comforts” - A Bruno x reader. A bruja turns the reader into a rat to get closer to Bruno, but ends up becoming Bruno’s favorite rat and falls for him. Bad summary on my part, but it’s really entertaining and such a sweet story.
“Good Luck Hermit, She Makes Good Things Happen” - A Bruno x reader. Reader is a shy hermit with major anxiety that owns a little book store at the edge of Encanto. She draws the attention of the Madrigal family when she publicly defends Bruno one day. TW: anxiety. Relatable since I also have chronic anxiety. Reader’s relationship with the different Madrigals is very fun and sweet to read. Entertaining read.
“Lay Down Your Load” - A Bruno x Male Reader. Bruno predicts the death of the reader’s parents and the reader grows to hate him for it. But when Bruno comes back after disappearing for 10 years, you discover he’s not the man you thought he was. 10/10 I love it so much, the interactions between the two are so cute and I can’t wait for more chapters to come out.

Patient and Steadfast and Steady
Mirabel left her home a decade ago and is now returning.
She's... terrified.
She doesn't know what to expect, what to think, what to say.
But she's not alone, and things in the Encanto aren't quite as she'd left them.
It might just be time for her to get a miracle of her own.
(Written for the best girls birthday, tho I didn’t get it out in time. A runaway and returning Mirabel fic!)

I've got a very mixed relationship with TV Tropes. They banned me twice for no real reason, but I can't stop admiring their archive of tropes. This is what a work page for my "Encanto" fanfic, "Cracks in the future", would look like. (Some of these tropes also fit the canon characters in the movie.)This fanfic is set in an alternate universe, where Bruno has a wife (Míriam) and two kids (Teresa and Víctor).
A - H
Bruno and Míriam agreed to simply not reveal what he saw in Mirabel's future.
It is a case though where the Betas get together later than the Official Couple, since everyone had just expected Mariano to propose to Isabela, while Dolores had hidden her feelings for him.
Nowadays, it is her job to help him deal with whatever his problems are…
* Pepa and Félix are a gender-inverted example. She is very hot-tempered and overly emotional, and it became his job to calm her down (and it's a very important job, since Pepa's mood controls the weather in the Encanto). The Bully: A gang of them attack Víctor in an alley before Teresa can stop them. One of the bullies who insults their father gets what he deserves though…
* It is revealed that Bruno also was attacked by bullies when he was younger, and that Pepa had to strike them in their heads with lightning.
Bumbling Dad: Mirabel's father, Agustín, is clumsy and will always attract bees, but he does love his wife and his daughters dearly and will do anything for them.
Her theory is that she got the same gift as him just for this reason: Since she loves her father so much, she can't imagine having a different gift.
Bruno and Víctor are also to have inherited their writing skills from him.
Still, she is prepared to leave the shop again after the magic returns.

So, about the colours of Encanto...
So I'm sure this has been pointed out many times before, but I really wanted to say this aloud as this little Encanto detail makes me so happy.
So like the family units inside the family Madrigal are colour-coded, that much is obvious. Pepa and her family are yellow.
Tumblr media
Bruno is green. (my favourite colour is green :3)
Tumblr media
And Julieta along her family are blue.
Tumblr media
But wait. No. Here's the thing. Isabela doesn't match the colour theme of her parents and siblings. The base colour seems to still be blue-ish, but her dress, her flowers, everything about her is pink and purple. Now, I wonder... where does that come from. Welp, unsurprisingly:
Tumblr media
I think we've found our culprit. Throughout the film we see Abuela raise Isabela above her other grandchildren. She is moulding Isabela to be perfect. More specifically, her definition of perfect. This is separating Isabela from the rest of her family.
And this has been going on for a really long time.
Tumblr media
See how different Abuela looks in Isabela's photo. In the triplets' pictures, she seems to be softly smiling. In Isabela's, she seems warm, like a grandma. I wouldn't be surprised if they at Disney have copy and pasted Abuela in the later ones. This has been going on since the beginning. Has Isabela ever been let to be the child of Julieta and Agustín, or has she always been her grandma's perfect girl? I don't even want to know...
But wait, that's not all sad! There is a change that happens during the last song. She gets her powers back and wham bam, would you look at that:
Tumblr media
She herself makes her dress blue. (Sorry for the bad quality, couldn't find a good pic and just took a screenshot from yt) She "returns" to her intended colour, for the lack of a better phrase. She's freeing herself from the control of Abuela. Yay!
Extra note: I dunno why, but I find it interesting how with Pepa, everyone matches her, but Julieta and Mirabel match as well as Luisa and Agustín (and later Isabela) match. What's up with that? Idk. I love it all anyway :P
Gods I wish I had Disney+ so I could watch Encanto again...
Chiao anyway, thanks for listening to me ramble about some dress colours as a way to process my unhealthy hyperfocus. Imma go read some fanfic now :'D

Open your eyes
OK OK OK
I watched the movie and listened to the soundtrack for the billionth time (totally not cuz I'm writing a long fanfic and details MATTER TO ME) but anyways
SO I realize that many a people likely realized the eyes phrase meaning. Like yeah cool the movie starts with open your eyes so that Mirabel can see the candle. Considering this is followed by Casita telling them it's time, this means that this was a tradition.
Abuela Alma takes the 5 year old to her room, tells them to look at the candle, and goes on to tell her story.
--
Quick note here: I love that during her story there's a moment where there's 4 butterflies that fly out from behind her (when she says Casita welcomed them) and the butterflies look like they're in the colours of her, Pepa, Bruno and Julieta but I'm watching the Yo Ho Ho version so HD when I did my best screenshot there's 4 here I promise
Tumblr media
--
She then tells Mirabel that the miracle will give them a gift to strengthen the community and such. So by the time the ceremony got to Mirabel she already developed the notion that they serve the gifts not that the gifts serve them (I can't put exactly what I mean into words this is close enough)
The way she says it too btw is in the vein of "To be a Madrigal, you are required to have a gift."
Her tone doesn't actually change much for the rest of the lit candle portion of the movie. She refers to Pepa's emotions by the weather above her, Luisa is told to lift this move that (she doesn't even celebrate with everyone during the ceremonies she's still given chores and tasks cmon man every rewatch makes Surface Pressure hit harder), doesn't display much enthusiasm for Antonio but more relieved that he got a gift, etc etc etc you know this already
So why did I bring this up?
Because she didn't do it for Antonio.
Alma didn't give Antonio the speech.
Why am I so sure? Because the scene goes from Casita telling Mirabel she has to get Antonio ready, to Mirabel walking Antonio to his 'spotlight' and Dolores being the one to notify everyone that Alma said that it's time.
Also, the movie makes it A Thing to show Alma saying those words. It's her catchphrase essentially. I personally doubt that the movie would omit atleast the implications of this speech happening. 'There's no time!' Correct! And it would have been redundant! Consider this though, the opening implies the ceremony going like this;
1. Guests arrive and the family does their best to a proper host
2. Someone gets the child in question ready (probably parents)
3. Parents return to guests while Alma goes to the nursery and tells the story of the Madrigals and the gifts
4. Alma then walks the child to their spot and continues by herself to the stairs where she addresses the guests with a speech
5. The child is then welcomed/presented and walks up the stairs to their doors and gets their gift.
I wonder if Bruno giving a prediction was part of the ceremony either before or after too because if Isabela and Dolores got one that they remembered and Mirabel got one (granted this was after the whole no gift thing) did Luisa and Camilo? Because Bruno doesn't seem like an unprompted prediction type guy after the villagers did him real dirty
What makes me think that Alma went to the nursery? If she didn't that implies favoritism to Mirabel specifically and that seems weird out of place to me. By all accounts, nothing about Mirabel stood out YET. And no way she didn't tell her story to her own triplets when it was their turn, especially since it involves their father. Why would she skip 4 of her other grandchildren and then only tell the (at the time) youngest one? Doubt.
SO In conclusion, she didn't do the same for Antonio (he was probably told the story by the others at some point anyway) but notably, this meant that no one told him to open his eyes, specifically
Alma didn't tell him to open his eyes because hers were closed
In fact, the entire family appears to have closed their eyes, because much like Alma, their happiness feels like it stems from the fact he got A gift and has thus met the requirements to be a real Madrigal.
Which, as we know, leads to this
Tumblr media
(Btw I love that everyone in this scene is lit tf up because they're stars shining brightly and also Agustin Madrigal you absolute unlucky man, he's probably covered in the final pic by Isabela's arm asdfghjk)
The rest is, well, the story.
Mirabel begs her to open her eyes. Alma doesn't. Mirabel begs her to acknowledge the cracks. Alma doesn't. Mirabel begs her to see what is doing to the family. Alma doesn't.
It's only when the candle goes out and Alma is left in the figurative darkness, does she finally open her eyes.
And in All of You, she finally sings it again. Open your eyes. Saw someone comment that they didn't get this line but the way I see it Alma is trying again. Alma knows she wronged Mirabel and she and the others are basically starting over (they literally sing it to her face)
--
Second note: not sure where to add this but I love that it was Mirabel who brought Antonio to his ceremony because in a way it was foreshadowing that Mirabel took over some of Alma's responsibilities. She already takes care of Casita, wakes people up if they sleep too long (that's what I took from her knocking on doors), fixes breakfast, etc etc so why not also preparing the kids and giving them a speech which is notably more in the vibes of "we will love you, gift or no gift" and not "boy I sure hope you get powers, we have an image to keep!"

Some of My Fanfic and AU Ideas
Here’s a collection of AUs that have been rolling around in my brain (some for over six months) that I wanted to write down so I don’t forget them before I get around to writing the actual fanfics. I welcome anyone who wants to know more about or has questions about any of these; I’d love to answer them. Maybe getting some interest for these will encourage me to write them sooner.
These are only the ones I felt comfortable sharing.
Fandoms range from Marvel to Encanto to the Disney Zombies Trilogy
Marvel/Encanto Crossovers:
Starks Don’t Shine They Burn (Iron Fam Encanto AU)
I’m just gonna link to my post and not bother with much of a summary.
Basically Encanto except it’s the Iron Fam.
      2. Marvel/Encanto Crossover (One Meeting Version)
Notes: In this AU, time passes differently inside the Encanto, so while about 50 years have passed inside the Encanto, over a hundred years have passed outside it.
This also takes place about two years after the events of Encanto. Mariano and Dolores are married and Dolores is pregnant.
Months before the Civil War, an Avengers’ mission in Colombia goes south and Vision is the only one uninjured. They are stranded in the middle of the Colombian wilderness about a mile away from the Encanto. One of Antonio’s animals tells him about them and the Madrigals go to help. After getting over their shock they take the Avengers in and heal them. Vision spends time with the Madrigals while his friends recover and bonds with all of them. After the team fully recovers, they spend some time with the family and Bruno gives Steve a vision of how to find Bucky so he finds him sooner.
Civil War happens slightly differently since Bucky is safe and the existence of a super-powered family in the Colombian wilderness makes everyone pause over the Accords.
Basically: Vision is the Madrigals’ weird but polite houseguest for a couple days while Steve, Natasha, Sam, and Wanda are unconscious in the back room.
      3. Marvel/Encanto Crossover (Madrigals Stop Thanos Version)
Same notes from the previous AU.
An offshoot of the previous AU where Bruno has a vision of Thanos while the Avengers are still there. This leads to the Avengers secretly training the Madrigals outside government knowledge. Steve still finds Bucky early with Bruno’s help. Lagos happens differently and the Madrigals input on the Accords debate leads to a compromise with some revised Accords.
In this version, Thanos is defeated before he can snap thanks to the Madrigals’ help.
Encanto Ideas:
Broken Hearts Made Whole ( aka Encanto Boxcar Children AU)
Background:
In this world, some people are just born with magical gifts (or because one or both of their parents have gifts). Not everyone accepts this magic and some families reject children with gifts.
Also, Encanto is just a normal (if isolated) town that is very accepting of magic. Pedro doesn’t die young and he has a gift. Julieta, Pepa and Bruno are born with their gifts. Pedro’s gift is the ability to enchant objects by putting in a little of one’s soul. He made bracelets for the triplets so they can always find each other and Casita was his dying gift (it’s where his soul resides).
Short Summary:
Isabela, Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Mirabel, and Antonio have all been rejected by their families and caretakers, but have found family in each other. They survive on their own while living in a city.  Meanwhile, the Madrigals are tragically childless and take a trip to the city where the children live. The two groups of six meet. Things are strained at first, but eventually the Madrigals gain the children’s trust. So much so that when the children need help they go to the Madrigals and this eventually leads to them being adopted.
       2. Encanto Circus Captives AU
A year or so after the events of the movie, the Madrigal Grandkids are kidnapped by an evil circus owner from outside the Encanto. They are all forced into working for the circus. Luisa, Isabela, Antonio, and Camilo have acts related to their gifts while Dolores has to gather information she hears for the circus owner and Mirabel works on the costumes. They are abused for months to a year before Abuela, Tio Bruno, and their parents manage to find them.
       3. Encanto Fairytale AUs
Different Madrigal Characters in fairytales because fairytales are my jam.
The only idea I have so far is Luisa in a Cinderella AU because it’s the first one that come to me and I think Cinderella fits perfectly for Luisa. I want to get fairytales for the rest of the family eventually.
My plan for the CinderLuisa AU story wise is a combination of the Disney movies and multiple versions of the original fairytale.
Highlights include: Isabela and Mirabel as her Fairy Godsisters and cameos of Bruno as the rat-turned-coachman and Camilo as the lizard-turned-footman.
Encanto/Zombies Crossover
Takes place maybe a year after Encanto and during the summer after everyone’s first semester of college (In the ZOMBIES Universe). For convenience, the Miracle Candle was restored with the house’s magic in this story (I’ll explain later/at some point). All canon Encanto couples are in effect, as are: Zed/Addison, Bonzo/Bree, Wyatt/Eliza, and Willa/A-spen from ZOMBIES.
Through unexplained circumstances, Casita lands in the middle of the Forbidden Forest with all the Madrigals plus Mariano inside. Naturally, our Seabrook gang, plus some others, go to investigate. Upon realizing that the Madrigals (and Mariano) aren’t a threat and are just as confused as they are, they welcome them to Seabrook and introduce them to modern technology and monsters. Seabrook accepts the Madrigals’ gifts and their Miracle and, after a period of adjustment, the Madrigals accept the monsters of Seabrook. Eventually they figure out how to get the Madrigals home.
Disney Zombies Ideas:
Zombies Pirate AU
A historical-based AU where the Zombies are pirates. Zed is the Captain, Eliza is the First Mate, and Bonzo is the Quartermaster/Second Mate. Addison is a princess or of some other noble birth and Bree is her lady-in-waiting (and friend).
So what happens is that Addison and Bree are captured by a different pirate crew to be held for ransom. They’ve been on their ship for a few weeks when the Zombies attack the other pirate ship and find Addison and Bree. They take the girls aboard and intend to bring them home. Unfortunately, shenanigans happen that delay their return. During their extended stay, Zed and Addison fall in love, as do Bonzo and Bree. I’m thinking that eventually a Navy force led by Bucky finds the Zombie pirate ship, captures the Zombies, and takes them all back to Addison’s parents’ kingdom.
I can’t decide whether Addison and Bree jailbreak the Zombies and run off with them, Addison pleads with her parents at their castle to pardon the Zombies, or Addison convinces her parents to pardon them after she’s run off with the Zombies.
      2. Zombies Reunited Childhood Sweethearts AU
AU where Zombietown is just the poorer section of Seabrook and everyone’s human. Addison’s mom is still the mayor and her dad is the chief of police.
When they’re around eight or nine, Addison and Bree are dropped off in Zombietown by a couple of teenage bullies and befriend Zed, Eliza, and Bonzo before Addison’s dad finds them. Addison and Bree come back to Zombietown to play with Zed, Eliza, and Bonzo as often as they can. When they’re all around ten, Zed and Addison become “boyfriend and girlfriend” and so do Bonzo and Bree. (Since they’re ten it’s not much more than holding hands and extra hugs)
By the time the kids are eleven, Addison’s parents decide they don’t want their daughter to have friends in the poor part of town and ban her from going to Zombietown and later convince Bree’s parents to do the same.
About fifteen years later, Addison and Zed reunite as adults and so do Bree and Bonzo. Then the whole gang gets back together and Zed & Addison and Bonzo & Bree both start dating for real.
If you can’t tell Zed/Addison and Bonzo/Bree are my two favorite ZOMBIES ships

So I read this YouTube comment giving the concept of the candle's magic going more haywire than it did and affecting all the Madrigals to a much greater extent and I wanted to write it
Video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GC0pliB2-0s
Comment by J-Man:
This makes me think of a kinda-au where the portion of time where everyone’s gift was on the fritz was more severe. Imagine Antonio forgetting English and not understanding anyone, Julieta’s healing distorting peoples bodies, Dolores desperately holding her hands over her ears because she can hear half the world and can’t figure out what voice is hers, Isabela stuck in an oasis that nobody can reach her on because the plants will attack, Luisa scared to touch anyone in case she breaks them, Pepa trying to keep calm because she knows that if she feels a little off she might destroy the country, Bruno stuck in his tower in a constant loop of seeing things and not being able to tell what’s real and what’s a vision and what’s reality and of course, the person in the video, Camilo. Camilo transforming into anyone that passes his mind. He worries about Bruno, stuck in the tower, Antonio, Pepa, Dolores, transforming into everyone and everything except himself. (If you want to steal this idea to make a fanfic or something, please do! Just link it in the replies so I can read it)
Writing under the cut, no warnings, just long
I did a poor job of doing the main focus on camilo lol
It was chaos in La Casa del Madrigal.
A thunderstorm echoed through the halls and a burst of rain rushed, then quieted as Pepa desperately tried to keep herself calm. It was to little avail as a harsh gust of wind whipped around the room. She ran her hands down her braid, muttering to herself, "Clear skies, clear skies..." Félix was saying something but she couldn't hear him over the sound of her weather. The wind turned to bitingly cold snow as she fought to keep her emotions under control. If she didn't, she felt like she might flood the world.
Plants overtook the upper levels of the house while Isabela was stuck in a small clearing in the center. She called out to her parents in panic as more plants she didn't know she could grow spread, but the second anyone got close, including herself, they would shoot out and attack. Julietta and Augustín called out, futilely trying to help her disperse them. Luisa huddled in one corner, surrounded by cracks and broken pieces of tile. Every slight movement she made caused a new piece of destruction. It was only earlier that same day she hadn't been able to lift a plant pot, but now she couldn't move without her now-overpowered strength crushing something.
Dolores sat on the floor, shaking, hands pressed against her ears doing nothing the block the onslaught of sound. She could hear the panic of everyone in the house, the concern of everyone in the village, the cracks spreading through the casita, the trees and grass growing for miles in every direction, her own heartbeat and rushed breathing echoing like explosions in her ears. Antonio was just outside his room, eyes wide and frightened. He tried to say something, to call out, but found he couldn't speak. But one of the toucans croaked and he couldn't understand it, either.
Bruno had been on his way to Isabel's room with Mirabel, each not fully aware of the extent of the chaos outside the walls until he collapsed against the wall, eyes glowing bright green. Visions flooded his sight, ones from the past, the current one of the house breaking, ones that he'd never seen before and didn't know the meaning of. Mirabel appeared in front of him, and he heard her call his name in concern, but couldn't tell if it was still a vision or reality.
Camilo could barely move. He was changing with every passing thought. He was worried about Antonio. He was Antonio. Would Isabela make it out of her plants? He was Isabela. Mirabel was still missing. He was Mirabel. Was Dolores alright? He was Dolores. A clap of thunder echoed, and he was his mother. Every passing second made something about him change.
Focus, Camilo. Be yourself. Think about it.
He tried to envision his true face. His green eyes. The freckles across his nose. The shape of his face, the texture of his hair. He tried to will himself back into himself. He felt himself changing again, and opened his eyes to see if it was into the right form. Instead, the changes continued to speed up. He felt Dolores's height, Isabela's hair, Bruno's face, every feature changing so fast he couldn't keep track after a second.
Focus, Camilo!
He clenched his fists, forcing his power under control. It was his power. And he finally felt himself change into the proper form. He looked at his hands to make sure they were the right ones, touched his face, felt his clothes. Yes, he was himself. He laid fully onto the floor, panting. He tried to clear his mind, feeling like a pot about to boil over if he left it unattended for too long.
Just think about yourself. That's what'll keep you yourself. Myself. Eyes, nose, mouth, chin, hair, height. I am Camilo Madrigal. I am me.
After a long time, as quickly as it had happened, things returned to "normal". Isabela's plants faded away, and she rushed over to her parents. Luisa shakily stood up, still cautious, afraid she might hurt everyone with any sudden movements. Dolores still had her hands clamped over her ears, but she thought she could tell apart every different sound now, and could no longer hear the trees growing. Antonio was struck by all the chatter of his animals suddenly, but was relieved to find he could now speak. Pepa was still raining, though it was now localized over her head. She collapsed into Félix's arms. Slowly, Bruno's visions cleared from his sight, leaving him weeping and overwhelmed as Mirabel tried to comfort him. Camilo felt much more stable as himself now, though still tried not to think about anyone else lest he began the shapeshifting loop again. Antonio immediately changed this by running over to his brother. " Camilo! Are you okay?"
Camilo sat up, still cautiously keeping his own image in the back of his mind. "Y-yeah, I think I'm okay. I think I'm myself..."
Antonio hugged him tightly. "You're you. That was scary. I couldn't talk," he whispered.
Camilo nodded. "It was.." he said, thinking about the feeling of not being able to even stay in one form, let alone his own. He glanced at the candle, still burning in the window. It had been burning far too bright moments ago, but now it was a little too dim and flickering. "Let's go check in on everyone," he said. As he and Antonio made their way through the Casita, he couldn't help but wonder what was really happening to the miracle. He wondered where Mirabel was, and hoped she was safe. And hoped that she had meant it when she said she wanted to save the miracle. Because based on what he'd just seen and experienced, she was the only one who could.
