in home when dean says “i carried you out the front door” sam says “ you did.” he looks at dean, and when he starts to give a common response “you did?”, it doesn’t come out as a question. instead it’s this realization, an of course you did. john was focused on mary, and dean was focused on sam. john spent the rest of his life in that burning house. dean carried sam out.
sam doesn’t question dean at all, even though asking something like “really?” is a normal response to being told something you didn’t know. he agrees, because the logic of his four year old brother carrying him out of a burning house makes perfect sense to him. he would’ve been more shocked if dean had said that john carried him out. and then dean says “you never knew that?” not “i didn’t tell you that?” as if he genuinely forgets that they don’t share one brain and all his memories aren’t burned into sam’s prefrontal cortex.

John seems so uniquely able to torment his sons, but the thing that stands out to me most is telling Dean he might have to kill Sam. Sam, the boy he’s essentially parented his whole life. Dean did it for himself in the end, sure, but he did it first because John asked him to.
Then his Dad changes the parameters: protect him, keep him on the right path, or you’ll have to kill him. Not only has he commanded Dean to consider killing his brother, he’s put the onus on him completely if that’s how it works out.
Hell wasn’t hot enough for you John.

A thing my mom's told us, and I believe applies to Dean, is that my parents could never really, fully sleep until we were back home, when we were old enough to go out.
And I really think it'd be the same for Dean about Sam, but even worse, because for practically all his life they have slept in the same room and their lives are so much more dangerous.
Between Stanford and the bunker Dean would only be able to sleep very lightly, on that edge of awareness where you kinda know you're sleeping, until Sam came back to the motel and then he'd become aware just enough to process Sam-back-and-safe and promptly fall back into a proper deep sleep. And he'd never really realize that happens or think much about it, because it's just part of the standard care-for-Sammy package.

there's something so deeply erotic about this exchange. dean bites out a snarky comment, and sam immediately tenses up, waiting for his brother's disapproval. he expects it, he's waiting for it, because he's never good enough and he never does anything right.
but it doesn't come. dean tells him he's done good, he offers him whiskey in celebration, even, and it gives sam pause—he hesitates, like he doesn't know what to do, looks up at dean for confirmation, then accepts the offering. like he's proud of himself for gaining dean's approval, but he hardly knows what to do with it. how long has he been waiting for this anyway? how many years has he been trying and failing to get this simple, no-strings-attached praise out of him?

Hi there, happy (Wincest) Wednesday. We know that when Sam and Dean were kids, they were frequently left alone while John was away, with Dean put in a more direct parental/caretaking role. So I wonder: do you have theories or headcanons about these times when Dean was left in charge? What do you think that was like for them? Thanks!
hello happy wincest everyday --
yeah, the "Dean as substitute dad and mom" thing is one of many that are absolutely wild in the canon of this show. It's soooo good that we only see a few moments of it in flashback (I know there are some fans who wish for like a whole 'prequel' show, but... they're wrong, haha, it's never a good idea to strip out mystery in favor of overexplaining and inevitably fucking up via bad retcons) -- and the moments we see are great, because they don't actually show "Dean as parent", because he's not a parent.
Important to remember that their age difference is only 4ish years. This isn't, like, 17 year old Dean dandling Sam on his knee, as some fics and meta kind of imply. This is one little boy forced to watch out for another little boy, but he's still a little boy. The parentification is particularly fucked up for this reason -- because of course, he still has to make food and he still has to be John's spouse-at-home and he still has to manage everything, but he's, like, 12. Would you let a 12 year old do that and expect it to go perfectly? If you were 8, would you call your 12 year old brother "dad"? No, you'd tell him he smelled like boogers and he'd noogie you in response and you'd try to wrestle him and then your face would get shoved into his armpit and you'd get told yeah? what does that smell like, huh? that smell like boogers? until you cried uncle. Because you're two boys.
Which, obviously, makes the times that Dean actually has to act as a clumsy parent all the sadder. He's just not equipped for it. This is maybe at its most poignant in the Christmas flashback, where he's flipflopping back and forth between big brother and attempted parent at high speed. He really wants to be able to comfort Sam when he's sad but he doesn't have the tools, and how could he. Similarly in the high school flashback (where I guess they're ~15 and 19 and Dean's just really too old to be at that school), when he's looking out for Sam and tries to go overprotective, but Sam shuts it down immediately and Dean has to settle, because -- is he a shouty big brother, or kind of a parent? Is he meant to beat up a bully on Sam's behalf, or talk him through dealing with it himself, or just listen to Sam's feelings on the matter? There's never an obvious choice because the roles are so blurred, and Dean really did his best but there's just no winning.
Really, it's remarkable that Dean and Sam keep liking each other after all this... disaster. They had pretty standard brother bickering and 90% of the time it's that brotherly vibe. Sam's resentful but he mostly keeps the resentment where it belongs (with John); Dean, more remarkably, doesn't seem to be resentful of being forced into that position (again, 90% of the time), I guess because he just genuinely likes Sam and likes hanging out with him and views the failures he had as parent as his own problem (and, when he's a little more emotionally solid, realizes that the blame for that also lies with John, as well as destiny et al).
The other thing that makes their relationship work, clearly, is also that Sam does not view Dean as 'parental'. He talks back and doesn't do what Dean tells him to do and understands the dynamic very well. He doesn't have two "bosses", and is intrinsically bossy himself, and is honestly amazing at maintaining a sense of solid independent identity even as an 8 year old. So I guess, with all that babbling, my headcanon (based firmly in actual canon) is -- Dean was 'in charge', and took that seriously, but it was an unstable and maybe confusing and sometimes very scary thing from his POV; and Sam never felt like that was 100% true in any case, and so from Sam's POV it was the case that they were both abandoned by John, and so Dean never really counted as 'parent' at all. Which is really cool. Characters with mismatched perspectives on the same event lead to great stories.
#happy wincest wednesday#answers#...i guess bc wincest i should add -- and then they fuck about it?#but i guess that's part of it too honestly#the blurred roles are all of a piece#but dean's roles for sam are More Blurred than sam's view of them#if you asked sam he'd never say dean was a 'parent'#he'd say dean got stuck with taking care of him but that's not the same thing#and yet dean literally says he had to be father and mother#and then wife. i guess#....anyway then they fuck about it

Happy Mother's Day to Sam Winchester.
It's his fourth Mother's Day with DJ, and without Dean. Not that he and Dean ever celebrated it...
It's technically only Dean Junior's third Mother's Day, his birthday still months away. He brought home a card from preschool with a printout picture of him and Miracle cut in a heart shape and glued onto construction paper. He drew their family-- Sam, DJ, Miracle --mostly as scribbles, in the empty space on the paper. Sam feels his eyes prickle, smiling and thanking DJ for the picture, hugging him tight.
He looks at the picture again and his breath catches. Instead of the blue SUV that Sam drives, there's a black trapezoid that's clearly the impala, and in the sky where there might usually be a sun, there is a shape that looks a lot more like a halo, positioned (coincidentally?) above the driver's side. And inside, a shape seems to glow. He blinks hard and looks again, sliding his thumb over the space to feel the lack of crayon scribble, and makes himself breathe. Just a strange discoloration on the paper---not a ghost his son has drawn. And surely that halo is just a wonky circle of a sun.
"Do I have a mommy?" DJ asks, and Sam has to laugh a little sadly at the question.
A little too reminiscent of questions Sam used to ask Dean when he was little, but also something they've talked about before when DJ was younger. He's just a little too young still to remember everything yet when it comes to social constructs.
"Well, DJ, I'm your birthing parent, so for the purposes of this holiday, I'm your mom." Sam can't help blushing a little, thinking of how Dean would tease him about being the mom.
DJ just blinks up at him and says, "Oh! Yay! Happy Mother's Day, mommy!"
"Dean," Sam starts to admonish, caught off guard as DJ kisses his cheek and hops off his lap to run off with Miracle. "I'm still your dad! I'm still daddy!"
"Okay, mommy-daddy!" DJ says, like it's decided, and starts flying around like an airplane while Miracle barks happily like a puppy.
Sam sighs and looks to the sky. "Even without you here, he is so your child."

motels & dirty brothers
when the winchester brothers leave their motel room early in the morning while the dark was still around, they were full of each other. the motel owner assumed they were just raised in a close family, took the key from them, and gave a smile.
when the cleaners come, there are used condoms strewn all across the motel room, sheets dirty and stained with a variety of human liquids, both their own and others, abandoned boxers and blood covered shirts shoved into a corner, the chair moved to the center of the room, in between the two twin beds, a wad of cash stuffed into the bed side drawer with a sorry note scribbled out with ash and the bloody tip of a dagger. the motel owner never quite figures it out and by the time the sun rises, the brothers are out of town, 200 miles away on the road.

Sam and Dean are menaces to society, their friends, and each other. Why are we only weird about Sam? We can be honest and say they’re both terrible and weird about each other, both equally likely to put their closest friends on the chopping block. They both do odd shit in the pursuit of keeping each other in their lives.
It’s a Winchester staple, passed on by their father, and I find it very compelling. Don’t deny them their ancestry.

what if dean started calling sam baby before he was even born, and just never shook the habit. when sam is first learning words, he responds to “sammy” and “baby” equally. when sam is starting school, after john starts to be openly disapproving, dean stops using it so much. it stays in the house, between them, just like it was before. once sam starts middle school, he realizes it weird and gets so embarrassed by it that dean drops the name altogether. which doesn’t stop him from thinking baby every time he sees sam. maybe it’s the sort of thing most brothers would tease each other with, but for him it feels sacred. dean finds the loophole of “baby brother,” which will still get him an eyeroll in most cases, but sometimes sam lets it slide. there are only a couple times that dean calls him baby (not that sam’s keeping track..), when sam gets injured and dean is panicking, not thinking about it. sam’s whole body goes warm, melted by those two syllables that dean saves just for him, before the shame hits him like a wave. one day, jess calls sam baby, and he looks confused, then pleased, then mildly horrified. she doesn’t call him baby after that. adds it to the list of things sam is weird about that she can’t ask about yet. it’s only after sam leaves with his brother, that she recognizes the expression he had when she walked into the room with the two of them. the same one from years ago, caught in the same overwhelming storm of emotion, but somehow reassured by it.
#i just thought of this and im SO into it#mutual pining my beloved#only my brother can call me that#pink faced gangly kid sammy hating the name because it makes him feel so Much#but it reminds him of how dean sees him. he doesn’t want to be a baby#additionally. sam gets jealous that dean calls the car baby#but he can’t SAY THAT that would be humiliating#in which sam is jealous of deans possessions.#weirdcest#weechesters#teenchesters#parent dean <3#the brothermother incest is my favourite type#hc#mars.txt#the longing will outlive this body#my writing#wincest

"their relationship is romantic" "their relationship is familial" "their relationship is platonic" you're thinking too narrow. their relationship goes beyond labels. the family is inherently queer. their platonic love is romantic. the erotic is familial. each one is the other and the other is them
#.txt#i've gotten to the point of relationship anarchy where i no longer understand the obsession with labeling relationships#there's a post floating around like 'it doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic the point is that they love each other'#and i get the message. however may i propose that distinctions such as that don't even have to matter. consider#bold claim probably. but whatever i didn't have the choice to think about love in a normative way and as a consequence i have thoughts#of course i am thinking about wincest but it applies everywhere. jopzier even#jopson views crozier as a surrogate parent but in an inherently queer way. does that mean he want to fuck his mom? probably not#but the fixation and need for redemption turns the traditionally familial relationship into something far more#do you understand#once you leave the normative behind labels become useless#do sam and dean love each other romantically or platonically or familially? consider: it doesn't matter. there are no words to describe it#their love is queer in the sense that it extends beyond normativity. society holds no sway over them. they are ungovernable#i find it ultimately unhelpful to discuss fiction in normative terms when the characters themselves exist outside of normative society#shows like supernatural and the terror are perfect examples. sam and dean were never normal and franklin crew left normal behind#the arctic doesn't care if you fuck your mom. the impala doesn't care if you kiss your brother#this isn't really about anything i just saw that post the other day and i was like. why doesn't this Hit for me. well this is why#however it IS helpful to discuss fiction set within normative society in relation to normativity. it's relevant!#most stories are not however set within the bounds of normativity. that's kinda the whole point of a lot of fiction#baby i explore relationship anarchy in ways that you couldn't even imagine#<-tldr#i have a tendency to write essays in the notes every time i post something. sorry about that. it feels safer here and i am skittish
