Super Mario Bracket: FINAL ROUND
Tumblr media
"You're about to have a really terrible experience!"
Vivian
SEED: 1 (215 nominations)
PREVIOUS OPPONENT: Daisy
SPECIES: Shadow
DEBUT: The Thousand-Year Door
BIO: Vivian is one of the main characters of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the GameCube and its 2024 remake for the Switch. while she is introduced as an antagonist along with her sisters, she later joins Mario, at a time when all of Mario's friends have abandoned him.
Vivian's arc is one of the most memorable parts of one of the most critically acclaimed games in the greater Super Mario franchise. the 2024 remake of The Thousand-Year Door was specifically praised by critics and fans alike for making Vivian's transgender identity textually explicit in the English-language release, which had been censored in the original 2004 localization.
in the Super Mario Bracket, Vivian has consistently been one of the strongest competitors, from before the bracket even began. in the preliminaries, she received over twice as many nominations as the second most nominated character, Luigi. she has yet to finish a match with anything less than 70% of the vote, as can be seen in her previous matches against Dribble & Spitz, Goomba, Kamek, Count Bleck, Big Bertha, and Daisy.

"I'm The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens."
The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens
SEED: 38 (17 nominations)
PREVIOUS OPPONENT: Luigi
SPECIES: Human
DEBUT: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
BIO: The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens is a character from the live-action segment "The Great Hereafter" from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. she is a spirit medium who brings Mario and Luigi into contact with the ghost of their deceased grandmother.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! is, among English-speaking Mario fans, one of the most well-known of the Super Mario franchise's non-video game works. its live action half-episodes were either paired with animated Super Show! episodes, or (as is the case for "The Great Hereafter") with episodes of the Legend of Zelda animated series.
The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens is introduced after Mario suggests to Luigi that they should talk to "the old lady with the evil eye that she could tell fortunes and she could tell things before they happen", just before the woman in question rings the doorbell and says her full title out loud.
in the Super Mario Bracket, The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens has gained a notable dedicated following, winning new fans over almost entirely from her name alone. her pure appeal has led her to win against Ms. Mowz, Funky Kong, Yoshi, Elvira, Rosalina, and Luigi: a remarkable achievement.

the odyssey obviously raises a lot of questions and anxieties about the relationship between a parent and a child, but surely one of them must be: what are the responsibilities of parents, and how do they pass on power and legacy to their children, in a society where enslaved labor essentially raises upper-class children?
telemachus being emotionally closer to eumaeus than he is to odysseus and penelope is one example of this tension; even eumaeus' dogs know telemachus, but almost tear odysseus apart. there's also eurycleia being the first to recognize odysseus without any reveal from man or goddess, and the fact that eurycleia's name signifies the opposite of his mother's (eurycleia = wide-fame, widely known; anticleia = anti-fame, unknown). eurycleia and eumaeus are both described as being close to odysseus' family, raised with them and having a hand in raising them. eurycleia nursed odysseus, not anticleia. there's even special note made of eurycleia being protected from laertes; and yet any relative safety they have is maintained by selling out other, "disloyal" slaves (not that the text indicates that their own loyalty isn't sincere, but think about what that proximity does to a person trying to rationalize how and why they survive).
i've kind of lost the thread of what i was saying about parental responsibility and anxiety specifically, but i do think melanthius and melantho and the other hanged women are caught up in it too, somehow. the implicit threat of eumaeus and eurycleia's existence is ultimately realized, not by them, but through the slaves who align with the suitors actively seeking to supplant odysseus and telemachus, which is why their punishment is so cruel. no hierarchy built on enslaved people ever rests easily, and there's a lot of fear about it expressed through the odyssey.

A conversation I just had with my coworker’s child:
her, holding a paper fortune teller: ask me a yes or no question!!
me: will I do well on my singing recital this weekend?
her: you have to sing in front of people?
me: yes I’m really nervous. It will be my first recital.
her: if you’re nervous you should tell your teacher so you don’t have to do it
me: oh I can’t do that! it’s okay that I’m nervous and I will feel proud of myself when I’m done.
her: even if you do bad?
me: if I do bad that’s okay, I’m still learning. it might be scary but one day I will look back on it when I am better at singing and know how far I’ve come. No matter how I sing, no one is going to be mean to me about it because they’re all learning too
her: I will be mean to you about it
me: you will?
her: I think you should throw up in the bathroom and cry before everyone goes on stage so you don’t have to do it
me: oh okay

regardless of how you feel about modern paper mario leaning hard into the 'THE WORLD IS PAPER' thing for their gimmicks you do gotta admit its kind of impressive how much wild cartoon body horror the origami king devs managed to stuff into an e rated game simply because all of the characters are made of paper

What markers do you use and what kind paper? The textures are so Delicious
Very basic paper, actually! I find I overthink when using expensive stuff and it makes my sketches worse.
As for markers, I use Copics! Not that this is an endorsement (my first set were a very nice gift), but I have really liked using alcohol based markers over water based ones; lovely texture, good blending, and less streaking. However, the price can be *brutal*, and you can very easily get by with other markers + pencil crayons.

You talked about Crassus not getting his wealth in "traditional" manner, and it made me think of Plutarch taking about how Sulla's wealth was also viewed with suspicion because his father actually left him nothing so becoming wealthy was a subversion of his inheritance. I'm just ... having thoughts.
IT'S SO FUN there's such a specific kind of wound that digs into both of them happening there, Sulla's wealth is a mark of suspicion the way that Crassus' wealth is a permanent stain
it's not to the same degree, but there is something almost thematic about Crassus being brought up in a modest household and Sulla having lived in cheap lodgings (or to continue the almost: the way that there is a specific kind of familial absence in the early narratives of their respective biographies). the ways that they both gained wealth and power taking unconventional turns (whether the suspicion is warranted or not), even by the rapidly unraveling standards of the time.
it's not a perfect comparison!! but in a way it's poetic to me?? recognition in a reflection that doesn't line up so instead it's unbearable and grating. Sulla was the only Roman who could hold Crassus to the floor, and Crassus got up anyway. they both crawled up the Roman political ladder, ruthless in achieving their goals. its the mortifying ordeal of being known enough and not vibing with it.

A Year of One’s Own: Dating the Praetorship of Marcus Crassus, Martin Stone
like, Sulla knew Crassus well enough to know how to hurt him, and boy that sure feels like something.
Tumblr media
Plutarch, Crassus, trans. Warner.
ANYWAY, I'm getting off topic. oh my god I have gotten so far off the original topic of this ask.
to wrap it up: something something Sulla keeping the company of actors and such, and this text comparing Crassus to an actor about to enter the stage of politics once more, Sulla's role in freezing Crassus out of the traditional avenues of political power.
Tumblr media
A Life in Pieces, Plutarch, Crassus 12.1-16-8, James T Chlup
Many Things Are Weird About The Main Cast Of The Last Generations Of The Roman Republic. lots of subversions and transgressions happening all over the place.
heughghh to finish this off, I've been thinking about this a lot while I write other things, but uhhhh my thoughts are Not Particularly Coherent. I've been reading lately on the Rizal-Bonifacio relationship and what it means to conflict with someone who is partially responsible for making you what you are—

Decimation: Myth, Discipline, and Death in the Roman Republic, Michael J. Taylor
—and it's bleeding into all the other filing cabinets in my mind.
