I got into paper planners and journaling in June of this year and and it’s become a hobby now I guess because in the past I could never stick with it and here I have five notebooks I update daily/weekly.

It’s weird to say you love your planner but that one covered in stickers has so much of me in it. It’s my main planner everything goes in there. I’ve also done a bit of junk journaling in it too, where I just add stuff from my day or fun trips or wrappers from yummy snacks. There’s also a lot of gift cards from my favorite places in there. Most restaurants and stores will give you an empty gift card. You will get weird looks though lol

The one with flowers is my gratitude journal. Some days it really helps to actively look for the good because it’s so easy to spiral when things have been shitty.

The one with the banana charm is probably the most creative thing I’ve ever made lol it’s for memory keeping and I can’t wait until it’s full and all fluffed out!! I see other peoples Hobonichis and they get so thiccc lol I can’t draw but I fill it with stickers and “junk journal”, saving every scrap of my day lol my Husband now knows to check before he tosses anything out.

(I don’t to know if junk journaling is collecting and keeping what most people would throw away or if it’s actually making a journal out of junk/scraps of things. Does it matter?)

The journal with strawberries is for journaling/brain dumps. It’s where all the feelings go and it’s not decorated at all inside aside from a few random stickers. I try to focus on getting thoughts out and not so much caring what it looks like.

The pink one with breakfast on it is my “List Planner” it’s just a daily to-do list because I work full time, I’m a parent, and I’m in an Ultrasound program so I always feel like I’m drowning with things that need to be done. I still feel overwhelmed but at least I know what needs to be done and when and half the time I get it completed lol

It’s very relaxing to just still and “play” in my planners. For someone who isn’t good at creating this is my way of being creative I guess.

Trying to sleep and was looking at books and that eventually led me to think of Pride and Prejudice and yk what moment we need to appreciate more?

That scene where Caroline is doing her pick me shit and joking with Darcy about Elizabeth's pretty eyes and she's like when you guys get your marriage portrait done do you think any painter could do her eyes justice?

And our boy Fitzy doesn't even HESITATE he's like I think a painter would do a great job at getting her eyelashes and the way they look in the sunlight and it's just like

MY GUY HAD U ALREADY BEEN THINKING ABOUT THAT??? U HAD THE ANSWER LOCKED AND LOADED WERE U ON YE OLDE GOOGLE LOOKING UP WEDDING PORTRAIT ARTISTS NEAR ME??? DID U HAVE A REGENCY ERA PINTERST BOARD OF UR DREAM WEDDING TO LIZZY ALREADY MADE UP????

Something I wish the journaling / planner community understood is that thick paper isn’t necessarily synonymous with quality paper. Not liking ghosting is fine, but a paper ghosting doesn’t mean that it’s poor quality - it means that it’s thin.

I’ve experienced paper that doesn’t ghost at all literally crumbling up after two brush strokes with a Tombow. THAT’S poor quality.

So can we stop talking about paper being good or bad when we’re really just talking about thickness and our preferences?

How was the paper?

aaaaaaaaaaaaa thanks for asking! (for folks who don't know, stationary drama is afoot and folks are freaking out over bad paper they paid a lot of money for) I did a test on my hobonichi cousin A5 2025...there was no feathering which I was most worried about (feathering just kills the enjoyment of fountain pen writing and most cheaper planners/paper feather)

thankfully it looks like no feathering is happening and it seemed like most of the ink properties were coming through. notably the sailor ink amamoyoi (the first one from the top) has its lovely dark faded green shifting into pink properties, and the lamy dark lilac (second ink) seemed to have its green sheen intact (hard to take a picture that captures that green sheen in particular). After a few days though (I kept looking at the new page and comparing it to my current Cousin 2024 paper) I was worried about the third and fourth inks...none of their sheen seemed to be coming through. But was I writing too quickly because I was stressed/hopeful?? So the ink couldn't pool and sheen like it normally does??

Sooooo before answering this ask I went ahead and skipped ahead to like a May page and tried it again, and forced myself to write slower.

Once again, hard to get pictures to really show the sheen properly but the night time soda (third ink) and lady emerald (fourth ink) did have their purple and red sheen come through properly (thank gawd).

it's really too bad about the sanzen tomoe river paper being so inconsistent. I still don't have any other notebook/planner that seems to come close to highlighting fountain ink properties as well, even if they purport to use the same source of paper. It must be something about how hobonichi manufactures and treats the paper for the magic to happen, I suppose. Still, if this inconsistency keeps up it's just too stressful to spend this much money and not know what you're going to get. I'll probably switch to something else for 2026, and I won't be picking up anymore hobonichi notebooks/planners either. (please imagine that I'm saying the lasts two paragraphs like a Victorian gentlemen, discussing these matters of great importance with my fellows at one of those gentlemen clubs full of cigarette smoke, I've got a forlorn look on my face and I'm letting out huffs and sighs every few words as I look off at the distance, distracting myself from my important woes with another beautiful man's visage)

I made a few changes in my planner line up so that I’ll have a January start and I’m so fucking excited lol

I can’t explain the feeling of moving into a new planner and starting a new year and all the possibilities it holds. Or feels like it holds? Idk but I swear this is going to be such a good year ✨
