California Renegade meet-up
If ever you're given the chance to meet fellow bookbinders in person, do it. Don't hesitate. The experience of sitting amid a group of individuals who are as wholly obsessed about a hobby as you are was, frankly, fucking awesome.
Tumblr media
I'm still floating on a happy cloud of endorphins from this weekend's @renegadeguild Cali server meet-up. It was a small melting pot of fandoms and ships, age ranges and skill levels, and an established ethos about sharing knowledge without reserve or judgment.
Even with the (very) early morning alarm, a long drive, and nerves about meeting everyone for the first time, it was the best experience. I learned how to marble paper and book edges. I tried my hand at paste papers. I held other binders' books (!!!!) and was properly gobsmacked by their skill, listening as they openly shared how they achieved an edge, an endband, a leather cover, a difficult technique.

At one point, when the day was winding down and just a few of us were left standing inside @duran-binding's kitchen, a passionate discussion ensued about the history and origins of a fandom I'd never heard of. And in that moment, my mind took a snapshot from above: the five of us animatedly discussing fanfiction and how our favorite fandoms could potentially intersect. It left me feeling intensely grateful for being invited into this community of fanfiction binders.
So yeah. 10/10 recommend.

I had such an awesome time learning about marbling at the SoCal @renegadeguild meetup. Really pleased with how things turned out. Everyone’s papers turned out so beautifully! Special thanks to @mourningmountainsbindery and @duranbinding for all the guidance, and providing the tools and space.

This is a Horatio Hornblower story with a really interesting magic system and some unconventional world building.  Since it was an Age of Sail setting it was the perfect excuse to use some fun materials.  I used mystery paper from the local creative reuse store for the textblock and untrimmed edges for a rustic look.  The cover is a bit of printed marble paper I’ve been hoarding for "something good" for 10+ years.  I’m not sure why I thought the gold HTV would have enough contrast with the brown bookcloth for the spine title, but it is readable from certain angles.

Garamond for the body since it’s a historic font, and IM Fell for the titles since it looks aged, plus a cursive font I can't recall.  The margins are a bit wide since I originally planned to trim the edges, but they give it rather luxurious proportions (plenty of room for marginalia and rebinding if it was a period book).  I couldn’t decide between two mock-ups for the title page, so included both - a super simple one for the regular title and over-the-top following the introduction.

A princess of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs
Full cloth binding, backed with french groove and paper onlays, coloured edge and french double core endands.
The typeset was part of Renegade's Tiny Books Bang event last year, but it took me forever to get enough distance to come up with my own cover instead of copying the wonderful bind that was exchanged in the event.
This wonderful typeset was provided by @tinwhiskerpress
Materials used:
case covers - grey board 2,4 spine stiffener - cardboard covering materials - commercial bookcloth (Duo brick, brown) paper onlays: bugra bütten (yellow, green), marbled paper (by Renato Crepaldi)
inner book bookblock paper - Schleipen fly 05 (115gsm) endpapers - marbled paper by @renato-crepaldi endbands - buttonhole silk (Gütermann), leather core (1 and 2mm) edge colouring - oak gall ink and interference chameleon acrylic ink (Nebula copper)

Marbled Monday
This week's book contains a veritable smorgasbord of marbling! This is Harvesting Color: The Year in a Marbler's Workshop by British marbling master Ann Muir (1939-2008). Published by Incline Press in 1999 in an edition of 250 copies, the book contains a third of a sheet of 12 marbled paper designs, each representing a month of the year. All of the paper, including that for the cover (which matches the month of April), was marbled by Muir. The sketches of cats are also by Muir.
The patterns included in the book are each meant to evoke elements of the their corresponding months. They are shown in order here except for April, which is shown here on the cover of the book. There is a wide variety in the patterns—some are combed patterns while others are swirled with a stylus. Some are Turkish while others are Spanish moiré. The examples demonstrate the breadth of possibility in marbling and Muir's own mastery of the art.

Here they are all together ✨❤️
My very first batch of marbled books! I will be making more. It was alot of work, but I really enjoyed the process. I’m learning that great craftsmanship takes lots of time 😌 And I love that.
