¡Viva Ladinoamefrica! ¡Viva el Panamericanismo!

I love so much being a Latina, being Latin-American, being a Brazilian Latina, being from Abya Yala, Pindorama, Turtle Island or, as Lélia Gonzalez says : Améfrica Ladina, Ladinoamefrica, Ladino Amefrica, in which the Jewishness of my giyur process dances beautifully with me being a Latina, in this context of interculturality and — in the construction of Ladinoamefrica — of powerfulness and powerfulfilling of African Bipoc diaspora, of the pre-Columbian Native Pan-American peoples and the Sefardic diaspora in the figures of Bney Anusim, deeply marginalized by systemic antisemitism of Inquisition as a form of racialization — even after forced conversion, the second class citizenship, the marrano stigmatization, precisely due to ethnicity and ancestrality — as well as cultural and religious supremacism...

As a Latina, Ladino feels so close and intimate, like a language I can grasp and relate to, and understand roughly, even before seeing details.

As a Latina, I love that I think of my Brazilianity with this Latinoamerica lens, of the great community of countries we as Brazilians, we as Latinas, are in... I love that I think of my Brazilianity alongside Lélia Gonzalez's notion of Ladino Amefrica!

As a White Brazilian Latina, I stand in solidarity with non-White Latinx and non-Whites in general, as well as deeply aware of marginalized racialized communities regardless of whiteness or not — like for instance with Romani people, the Tatar people, the Jewish people and the Palestinian people, regardless of Whiteness — in a collective liberation from kyriarchy and nordicism.

The importance of the category of nordicism with its extra layers of supremacism and racializations within whiteness itself.

And as someone born and raised in Latin America, the fact that I'm racialized as White here, means I think it's an important social marker of difference, even if I eventually move abroad — let us say, for instance, to Europe, to Canada or to the US, and then have my Latinitud as a factor of intra-social systemic marginalization in out of Latin American polities as a member of the Latin-American diaspora. And also with the very tendency and movement of talking about whiteness inside marginalized racialized communities, like the Latinx community in the US, in Canada and in Europe, with the figure of White Latinos, Latinas, Latines, Latinx.

Abya Yala is so beautiful! Pindorama is so beautiful! Brazil is so beautiful! Ladino Amefrica is so beautiful! ¡Viva Latinoamérica!

All this powerfulness, all this powerfulfillability, all this hopefulness, all this hopefulfillability!

Part 2: Hello, Control!

About a week passed before Melinda and her newlyborn son could be dismissed from the hospital, but the engines and the coaches back at Apollo-Victoria had already heard that the boss lady had finally had her baby; they had come to know the news when, on the day after the birth, Mr. Edwin had come to the yard and announced the birth of his son to everyone, and had started to hand out cigars to the drivers, and also some of the staff back at the station. Even Ashley, who was the only smoking car in the yard after her friend Cindy had been transferred to another station, had recieved a cigar. And she had LOVED IT.

The birth of Oliver needed a much deserved celebration, and it happened about a week after the baby had arrived home. On the day of the "welcoming to the world" party, Melinda had put Oliver in a green onesie with coloured stripes, and had placed him in his carrier inside her car, where he stayed for the whole lenght of the journey to the station's common room, where the party was set. When they arrived, each and every one of Edwin's colleagues (along with thier own families) had come to see the baby for the first time, and they all wanted to hold him, cover him in kisses, pinch his chubby cheeks, and take pictures of him, all while hoping they didn't make him cry at any given moment. The party was also the occasion to invite the other railwaymen to Oliver's future baptism, which was set from 100 days from the birth; driver Joseph Gallagher and his wife Sabrina, who had been close friends of the Booths from the times of University, were announced to be Oliver's future godparents.

After about 2 hours after the party had started, someone called from the phone in the common room. It came from the yard, and none other than the engines and coaches wer calling; they had managed to use the trainyard's wallphone without breaking it (somehow), and they all had a request: they wanted to see the baby. And they wanted to see him now. Melinda and Edwin complied, no question, and brought their baby to the trainyard in his pram.

As it was expected, all the rolling stock who weren't working that day had switched to their "human-like" forms, and they were all expecting the boss lady's baby, as if it was the Pope himself who was coming. And Greaseball was in front of them all. He had arrived about a month prior following the PanAmerican Railroad Championship, at which he had placed 3 places behind his father and current World Champion of Railroad Racing, Big Macho the Union Pacific Diesel. Behind him there stood his new racing partner, a pretty, light blue dining car named Dinah, who was going on and on about how she LOVED when passengers brought their children on her and had their meals all together, and how she wanted to have a little trainlet too, someday, perhaps with a racing champion...

Behind the duo, there stood the patriarch of the trainyard, Virgil "Poppa" McCoy, an old steam engine who had lost his place as World Champion to Big Macho 3 years prior, and had developed a dislike of these big, powerful and rude Diesels; he was surrounded by the few Freight Cars who had remained at the yard: CB the red caboose, Dustin the big hopper, and Rusty, the other steam engine in the yard. Despite having to stand next to the official diesel engine in charge of the station's other diesels, them too wanted to meet the new addition to the family.

Melinda took Oliver from his pram, in order to show him to the engines and coaches; to put it short, they ABSOLUTELY LOST IT. They all started to clump together around Melinda, Edwin and Oliver, and began arguing on who would have been the first to hold the baby, all while Melinda was reminding them that while they were all big, strong and made out of solid metal, Oliver was tiny, frail and had to be carried with the most extreme care, even from herself, who was an human herself. Perhaps it was the ruckus, or stomach gas, or hunger; but soon, the baby got fussy, and started crying. That sound was enough to stop the arguing of the rolling stock, who became concerned with the newborn's wellbeing; Greaseball, out of everyone, was the one who was getting the most worried.

Perhaps asking to bring a tiny baby in such a noisy place hadn't been the rolling stock's brightest idea, so far. It was surpassed only by all the stupid things ever done by Flat-Top, like faking to throw his favorite brick at police, or keeping as pets the rats he found around the yard. And now, thanks to their "bright" idea, baby Oliver was crying for no reason, and his parents were trying to calm him down, to no avail. They needed somewhere more calm, perhaps to sit on something soft, like...

"Belle?" Poppa asked; the old sleeping car came forward. They had been racing partners for a long time, and had raised together all of their adopted children, including CB and BV, who were already the sons of AV the Caboose and a boxcar only known as "Barb", and had abandoned her partner and kids years ago.

"I have no idea how human babies work, but it appears that our little friend seems overwhelmed by all this noise. Please, if you don't mind, could you..." Poppa asked, but he was interrupted by the noise of Belle switching into her "train" form. "Climb on me, Mrs. Booth. My beds are comfortable enough for you and your baby." Belle sweet-talked the owner. Melinda complied and climbed upon with Oliver, while Edwin stayed behind to answer the others' questions.

"It's ok, little one, it's ok... mommy's here, baby boy... my special little man, my little Oliver..." Melinda cradled Oliver to calm him down after experiencing all that cacophony. It took a while for the baby to calm down, and the calm enviroment of the sleeping car helped greatly. Not a good first meeting, but it wouldn't have been the last. The trains already loved the little boy, and their bond would only have strenghtened from that day forward.

Yasmani Acosta was born in Cuba and was always second fiddle to Mijain López, who was his friend, rival and mentor. Tired of being the second best to who is essentially the world's best wrestler in his category (the dude has 4 Olympic gold medals, and this year was the first time since 2008 that he conceded a point in the Olympics), he fled Cuba during the Panamerican Wrestling Championship in Chile in 2015.

Then he decided to stay here, got the chilean nationality, started competing for Chile, won some titles and medals in the Panamerican and South American games, world cups, etc. And after many years, now he's gonna face López in the Olympic final.

SPFPP 302: The Prejudice of Stigma

I wasn’t sure if I’d publish this as a podcast episode considering I’m exploring the new territory of just collecting information from health care providers that can support my mission to help people navigate the stigma that comes with not only a herpes, but any STI diagnosis. As I learn more, I learn more. While I filter and curate this information from them to you, maybe you’ll have my same experience and growth while I’m learning out loud here through these conversations. So I decided to get their consent to share these recordings that aren’t quite podcast episodes, but conversations with providers on their challenges and perspectives as they treat patients. Dr. Lourdes here is the first interview in that series. I look forward to sharing with you here.

Lourdes Mantecón-Garza obtained her medical degree in 1982, at the medical school of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, in Monterrey, Mexico. She continued with specialty studies in Internal Medicine at the SSA Metropolitan Hospital in the same city in 1988. She completed a master's degree in business administration at the University of Texas (MBA, UT-PanAmerican) in 2005. She continue with studies on human sexuality at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Human Sexuality (IASHS) and at the Buehler Institute, both in California USA. Dr. Mantecón is a certified clinical sexologist by the American College of Sexologists International and is also a certified sexuality counselor by the American Association of Sexuality, Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) also in the US. Dr. Mantecón -Garza has fellow studies in women's sexuality by the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH). She is a visiting professor for human sexuality readings at different educational institutions in Mexico (UANL) and the United States (UTRGV school of medicine and family residency). She has presented research papers at national congresses in Mexico and the United States and world ISSM (International Society for Sexual Medicine) 2018, WAS (World Association for Sexual health) 2019 and ISSSWSH 2020. In addition to her practice, Dr. Mantecón Garza decided to write reference books that could be available to the population without the difficulty of medical technicalities. His first work, “The diet and the diabetic”, was published by Editorial Trillas in 1996, the second is “Healthy Sexuality” in the process of printing with the same publisher. She is dedicated to work as sexuality counselor at her office in McAllen Texas, she also offers services through telemedicine in English and Spanish.
