Rio and Niterói officialize joint bid to host the 2031 Pan American Games

Commitment letter was delivered this Tuesday to the Brazilian Olympic Committee

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and Niterói's Mayor-elect Rodrigo Neves have formalized the joint bid of their cities to host the 2031 Pan American Games. They submitted a commitment letter to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) to express their interest. Rio's Governor, Cláudio Castro, has already pledged to deliver the state's endorsement, while federal support still needs to be formalized. Besides the joint bid, São Paulo and Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, are also contenders. Only one bid per country can be submitted to PanamSports, the event organizer.

The deadline for COB to choose between the two bids is January 30, the closing date for city nominations. The COB has already received São Paulo's commitment letter. In a light-hearted exchange, Paes jokingly booed the rival city.

The host city will be selected in August 2025 at a PanamSports assembly in Asunción. Should Rio and Niterói win over São Paulo, they will have until April to submit a detailed dossier to the event organizers outlining their plans.

Two weeks ago, Niterói's Vice Mayor-elect Isabel Swan, who also chairs the PanamSports Athletes' Commission, was in the Dominican Republic for a board meeting of the organization. She took the opportunity to present the bid and garner international support.
