De Cierta Manera (One Way or Another) | 1974 | Sara Gómez | Cuba
De Cierta Manera is a film created by legendary Black Cuban female filmmaker Sara Gómez. It mixes documentary-style footage with a fictional story centered around the Las Yaguas slums in Havana where the majority of the population is made up of Black people, Mulatos, and poor Whites. It demonstrates how the changing of material conditions, like in developing the neighbourhood, doesn't immediately change the behaviours and attitudes of a given population.
The fictional aspect of the story focuses on Yolanda a white school teacher with communist ideals who has become employed at a school in Las Yaguas, and her Mulato boyfriend Mario who is a resident of Las Yaguas; and whose interest lays more in his gender, ethnic/racial origins, and neighbourhood loyalties rather than in the working class solidarity pushed by the new revolutionary Cuba.
Their relationship is indicative of social struggles in Cuban society. This includes the machismo of Mario with its origins in western European Spanish society, but also the patriarchal attitudes that have been preserved in the Afro-Cuban fraternity, Abakuá, which he is part of. It also includes the racist attitudes still harbored by Yolanda towards Mario and her Afro-Cuban pupils, despite her apparent revolutionary convictions. Portraying the idea that for the Cuban Revolution to persevere, prejudice; whether racist, sexist, or class based must also be tackled.

Sexypink - for Febuary we took to teleportation - remembering works once seen - some unknown, yet all exciting and intriguing - Cuban Filmmaker Sara Gomez’s intuitive innovations to thought provoking musings of Imani Perry. Zac Ove’s monument and, like a call and response, the Warao Sculpture controversy on the shores of San Fernando stirred up talk. Adam Williams tapped the earth as did A k u z u r u on an early morning. Elladj brought the delicately decorative as Shannon amplified it in blue. K(c)ongo dey Robert Young and Studies in Mas, Makeda Thomas educated.
Zilla punctuated as Erika opened her book. Saegel let the color run riot and so did Esther. Orozco paused us and Rubadiri brought us the third.
Maria Sibylla, Agostini Brunias, we thank your observations and efforts - Kadiejra snapped it all up. Maya wandered, wondered and wowed and Mr. Holder rest well.

Hii! I'm Nat King, and I recently joined the Resident Evil fandom! I have a few stories written so far, but I would like to share my most recent fic. It centers on the character Maria Gomez, who appeared in the films Vendetta and Death Island. I ignored the canon and a lot of things here are pure headcanon 😅 but I enjoyed writing it! You can read this story in Brazilian Portuguese or English! 💕

Thinking Aloud About Film: De Cierta Manera/ One Way or Another (Sara Gomez, Cuba, 1974)
Thinking Aloud About Film talks Sara Gomez’ debut feature, DE CIERTA MANERA/ ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, a model of Marxist dialectical filmmaking, mixing fiction and documentary; a dramatic auto-critique of class and race that puts gender at the centre: an extraordinary film, currently on MUBI.   The podcast may be listened to here: The podcast can also be listened to…

De Cierta Manera is a film created by legendary Black Cuban female filmmaker Sara Gómez. It mixes documentary-style footage with a fictional story centered around the Las Yaguas slums in 1950's Havana; where the majority of the population is made up of Black people, Mulatos, and poor Whites. It demonstrates how the changing of material conditions, like the development of new neighbourhoods, doesn't immediately change the behaviours and attitudes of a given population.

Broken down to it's fundamentals, my understanding of Candace Flynn is someone who is built to overcome messed up situations. Someone who is really badass, who would dig herself out of hell. But who was born into a situation too nice, where the only problems she has are ones she makes herself. Problems that are born of the disregard people show her because she doesn't have anything to offer, not while she has nothing to fight, while she is without a purpose, and instead spends her time spinning her wheels fighting something she would otherwise fight to protect. Candace Flynn is someone meant to be a soldier, a sword, an action hero, but was born into paradise instead.
Similarly, my understanding of Sara Murphy is someone who was born with the blood of survivors, but with nothing to survive. And in absence of something to survive against she kind of makes her own challenges, throwing herself headfirst into Dr. Zone, putting all that energy not spent surviving Murphy's Law into being an obsessive fangirl. The cast of MML is relatively down to earth compared to PnF, but she's got an energy level that would feel right at home there. Constantly making new cosplays, stalking creatives and researching the show.
They are like. The same character on the surface, both have the potential to be badasses, but live relatively privileged lives so instead they're just passionate weirdgirls who love their reality bending little brothers. And I love them. Best characters of their respective shows imo.
Kevin however was NOT built for being world ending shenanigans or being Superhero adjacent. He is literally just some random teenage boy. He's doing great though.

“Sara, a black woman, dealt with complex issues in her documentaries, from discrimination to marginalization and the racial prejudices that prevailed in Cuba. Her selection of topics and her way of tackling them with an original approach made her a reference of her time.”
