The sun is warm but not too hot, a perfect afternoon where the sea breeze keeps. Things cool and the sound of gentle waves fill the air. You sit comfortably on a big, soft beech blanket, propped up with cushions Chris insisted on packing “Just in case.” Your hands rest on your belly, where the tiniest flutters of movements remind you that soon there’ll be one more pair of little feet running across the sand.

“Hey, you okay?” Chris’s voice pulls you from your thoughts. He crouches beside you, his ocean blue eyes scanning your face. Then drifting to your belly like he’s half expecting the baby to pop out and start building sandcastles already.

You laugh softly, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “I’m fine, Chris. We’re fine.”

He still looks at you like he needs to double-check. Always the protector, even on his day off. “You sure? I can bring you more water, or another snack. Or-“

“Chris,” you cut him off gently, placing your hand over his. “Sit. Relax. Enjoy this.”

He huffs out a soft chuckle but does as he’s told, setting beside you. Your toddler, not content with the slow pace of the adults, runs over with a bright yellow shovel in hand, waving it excitedly. 

“Daddy! Help me make a big one!” they say, pointing to a patch of untouched sand. 

Chirs gives you a look, silently asking if you’ll be okay for a few minutes. You wave him off with a smile. “Go, babe. I’ll cheer you on from here.”

He gets up with tat easy strength of his and hoists your little one into his arms for a second before setting them down near their future sandcastle empire. As you watch them, your hand instinctively rubs over your belly, feeling the little kicks that seem to react every time Chris laughs or your child squeals in excitement. It’s like this baby already knows their family’s voice, already part of this sweet little team you’ve built.

After a while, Chris returns with a smug grin, brushing the sand from his hands. “They said I wasn’t allowed to help anymore because I made the walls ‘too straight.’” 

You laugh, shifting a little as he helps you adjust your seat, ever attentive. “Sounds like someone inherited your perfectionism.”

He leans in, pressing a kiss to your temple. “Hopefully they get more of you than me.” 

You roll your eyes, but you heart melts as he settles beside you again, one big hand sliding over your belly without a second thought. “Hey there, Little one,” he murmurs, his voice soft in ways most people never hear. “You’re gonna love it out here.” 

The three of you take a walk later, your steps slower now but steady with Chris’s arm looped protectively around your waist. Your toddler runs ahead, collecting seashells and holding them up proudly, and Chris doesn’t take his eyes off you for long. Every now and then he asks, “Still good?” and you nod, your heart full. 

As the sun starts to dip, Chris spreads out a blanket and you all sit together, your toddler snuggled in his lap, exhausted but happy. Chris’s other hand stays on your belly, felling each little kick like it’s a miracle. 

“Next time we come here,” he says quietly, watching the waves roll in, “there’ll be four of us chasing each other down the beach.” 

You smile, leaning you head against his shoulder. “I can’t wait.” 

He presses a kiss to your forehead and holds you closer. “Me neither.” 

And under the fading sunlight, surrounded by people you love most, you know this is everything you ever wanted.
