So I doubt I’ll ever fully flesh this out as a storyline, but it has occurred to me that despite dealing pretty heavily with themes of Time and aging, I don’t think I’ve ever read or watched a Peter Pan retelling that has seriously incorporated the idea of time slips or time travel. I just really think it would be interesting to play around with. Maybe Neverland is an actual physical island in the real world but in certain spots at certain times, it’s possible for more modern people to slip back into the way it used to be. Or perhaps Hook is the result of a time slip… I would like to play with the idea of multiple Hooks or Pans or Wendys there at the same time too, at different ages. Like if you used Hook, it would be interesting to have a child version of him visit the island while the adult version of him is also present. Maybe no one even realizes initially that they are the same person. Like maybe Peter brings this kid to visit and has zero idea that this kid is also going to become Hook…and neither does the audience until gradually pieces start to fall into place. And Hook himself doesn’t know it. And then it gets to the point where it starts to become clear they’re the same person and everyone is like, “Okay, well, what do we do with this information now to prevent things from playing out badly?” Hook can’t kill the kid without ending his own existence (though maybe that’s what he wants). But Peter and the Lost Boys can’t bring themselves to do anything to him either because at the moment, he’s still loyal to them and a friend. And it plays with the concepts of fate and free-will and nature vs nurture shaping a person and…idk, man. It just would be a super fascinating story to read, I think.

One of my favourite things Once Upon A Time did was skew fairytale, myths, fables, and folklore. This isn't new or even remotely groumdbreaking, especially because the entire premise was adapting these stories. But I like how they did it and how much attention they paid to other retellings and, in a manner of speaking, validated those retellings and interpretations.
By this, I mean, how the writers have harnessed the story world Author plot and storybook existence and shown how in a few oral retellings or translations the gist of the story that we as an audience (and Emma in the story world) know has the bones of autobiographical truth but misses a few crucial details.
I could talk all day about retellings of snow white and Cinderella and Red Riding Hood that the writers of OUaT pay homage to (Red as the Wolf is no where close to being a new take but God they do it well). And then even changing the stories in a way that matches what they do with retellings in a novel way (Regina as the Ursula from Disney anyone? meaning the "real" Ursula can be anyone at all because this audience doesn't actually know Ursula) which serves in the same manner as their nods to existing appropriations and adaptations.
But I think, for me at least, how well they do this in their character of Captain Hook, a literary figure with near nothing specific tying him down and 101 readings because academicians and creatives alike have no consensus on what the hell Barrie was on about.
And from these little glimpses and subtle nods to retellings you can see how the story might have been twisted from autobiographical truth to some of the adaptations we know to the source texts. For example,
1. Hook as the original lost boy - a popular theory in adaptations. We see Killian and Liam in Neverland when he is barely an adult and still naive (sort of) and hopeful, long before his revenge days.
2. Hook as a symbol of adulthood, maturity and aging - for those who read Barrie as an allegory for children rallying against growing up and the only adult cast as a symbol of that, this guy is 300 years old.
3. Hook as the villain - sure thing.
4. Hook as fighting the tyrannical Pan - guess what? We've got that too.
5. Hook as rescuing Lost Boys - got that.
6. Hook as the guy kidnapping or otherwise delivering Pan lost boys - you'll never believe it.
7. It's an Crocodile that takes his hand - Hook calls the guy that took his hand that he's afraid of and hates with a passion a Crocodile.
8. Hook is Pan and vice versa, one grew up to be the other - not quite that. But we have a close enough story in 2 ways - pan/Malcolm and pan/henry.
9. Hook is Peter's father - again, a close enough story is provided that could easily be misremembered a few generations down or mistranslated a few times. Peter is Rumples father.
10. Hook wears red and has a perm - and I really do love this. They drop Blackbeard (the Treasure Island character that Hook was based on [so there's an even better nuance there too, not just in story world building but a nice nod to canon that their story world plot of misappropriations of the oral tradition of bedtime stories and generational stories is entirely feasable]) in Neverland looking exactly like Disney's Hook. Indicating that 'hey a pirate that looks like that is in neverland and well, there's only one of those in the story so it must be Hook' happened at some point.
I'll never get over how good they did that in story plot device of we're an appropriation, but our story is about this one source book existing that's a hundred percent accurate although it doesn't have all the details and somehow this realm is a bit mixed up on the facts.

Fall Little Wendy Bird Fall (feat. Tony Halliwell)
Whatever the Peter Pan horror movie does it won’t be as good as this. Honestly, Tink would be great as the horror cause she’s fae. Though I like to think this version of Tinkerbell still cares about Peter. She’s just dealing with a lot.

Best Peter
Tumblr media
Lovely art by @chaosgremlin95 (Angel) and @silly-lil-fool (Pen), ugly graphic by me. They look like game show contestants.
Angel belongs to @chaosgremlin95, being the Peter Pan in TNC and the Golden Arrows spinoff.
Pen belongs to @silly-lil-fool, being the Peter Pan in WNI.
*The word best here implies a common favourite, not that one is better than the other.
In the server, Vampeter, owned by @/yokaishinari came 3rd and Roswell owned by @/jayisabluebird came 4th out of the four nominees. I will not disclose Pen and Angels placings as not to sway public bias.
PROPAGANDA, feel free to submit ur own for either one.
Pen:
Honestly the first fan made Peter Pan to really make the rounds on Tumblr, he's an icon, synonymous with the Pandom. Our most famous, everyone else wanted to be Pen. He's the BLUEPRINT. Pen created something we should all aspire to become, a pioneer of Pans. Pen WNI is Influential, inspirational, iconic. Vote Pen 2k24 - @thecringefailintherye
Pen was my introduction to the fandom, He is the sweetest, silliest and absolute most freakish of little guys. I think my gravitation towards [a very pen-style character] comes from my need to keep Pen with me forever! - @chaosgremlin95
Angel:
-He has such flavor; the core personality traits of Peter Pan the same but shown in a different light! He is selfish in his weird attempts to be humble, he is cocky while constantly being put down and sad, 🤌🤌🤌
-his design is super creative and unique, giving him a distinct vibe from any other version
-is both a little guy and a wet meow meow at the same time
-has actual canon written/beautifully illustrated story to go along with the he!
-dramatic ahh nickname of the “Angel of Death” (from Hook no less) that’s just perfect for him
-*slaps the roof of him* this bad boy can fit so much tragedy inside of him
He deserves to win, he deserves some love
MY BOY DESERVES EVERYTHING!!!!! - all from @silly-lil-fool
i GOTTA GO WITH ANGEL!
The boy is probably the only Peter in history that learned his lesson BEFORE the story starts. Granted he's still a mess every day - @chaosgremlin95
Good luck, boys!!

The Never King
What it’s about: A Dark Retelling of Peter Pan where when the girl descendants of Wendy Darling all disappear on their 18th birthday. They always reappear but all are turned mad on their return. Winnie Darling is determined to not let it happen to her.
Pages or RunTime: 4 Hours 35 Minutes
⭐ Overall Rating: 6/10
🌶️ Spice Rating: 9/10 (First Smut Book I ever read/listened to and I was hooked but also shocked because I did not expect it)
Key Factors: Storybook retelling, dark romance, fantasy, morally grey characters/love interests, Polyamory, Smut, Swinging, Fairy Tale, Suspense, Big Plot Twists, fairies, fairies
Trigger Warning for this one!
‼️ Beyond Here Contains Spoilers ‼️
Favorite Character: The Dark One (I know his name but can't remember how to spell it but don't have the book with me and the internet is no help)
Least Favorite Character: Weirdly enough Winnie there were times I liked her but she also stressed me out so much.
Favorite Part: When TD1 is the one to save Winnie! It was such a big plot twist I was beyond shocked! He had been my favorite character all along the grumpy brooding character that you never thought would become a love interest. Then bam out of nowhere he is who I wanted with Winnie! I love the idea of them all just sharing her but the shadow is possessive and I think it actually stems from TD1 himself.
Least Favorite Part: The only part that actually triggered me and I completely hated because of it was the 🍇 I blocked out most of it. I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of Winnie liking it. (I understand and support any and all mutually consensual kinks and sexual experiences.) I couldn't get behind it myself simply because I put myself or at least try to relate to the characters in my books and I couldn't ever see myself getting behind that. So it's just a personal preference.
Favorite Quote: “Most men don’t realize this,” she said once, “but us girls, we have toolboxes too. Ours aren’t stuffed with hammers and wrenches and screwdrivers. We have these.” She gave her boobs a squeeze. “And this.” Then tapped at her temple. “And there’s no greater power than tits and brains, baby girl.”
I will read/listen to more in the series! I listened to the second one, but it was passive listening so I can't recall it all and need to listen to it again. I just have to be in the right head space and mood for it first.

“You’re being rash,” Vane says. “You do have a habit of being rash, but right now, I don’t understand it and I don’t like it.” He presses his back to the wall beside the door and picks at his nails. “Maybe pause for a second and consider the options—”
The sun sinks below the horizon and I yank the door open.
“All right. Violence it is.” He follows me up the stairs. I take them two at a time. And the whole way up, his voice is a singing lilt behind me. “Three, two, one. One, two, three. Better watch out: Peter Pan is going to murder thee.”

Need some new retellings to check out. What are some of your favorite Peter Pan retellings, especially if they’re more on the obscure side of things. I’ve seen/read most of the well-known retellings already. 😅 (Also, if you want my opinion on any given retelling, feel free to ask.)

i think the craziest part of the percy jackson series—(warning i’m gonna be talking about child abuse)
—is that sally married gabe. “she was using him to hide percy’s demigod scent.” she married a man who physically abused her child. like. i get it’s a very nuanced situation and that demigods literally don’t even exist but yk what does exist? moms who marry men that abuse their children… like girl. there are plenty of bum ass men who smoke weed and eat pizza and looove their ciggies and instead of abusing ur kid they would straight up ignore him and if they were a demigod their scent would STILL be hidden
