George, an aspiring event-planner/art enthusiast, meets Alex, a vet, when he takes his parents' dog to the clinic. Alex gives George his phone number, and George assumes that he wants to ask him out, but turns out Alex has a bad habit of caring too much and he gives away his personal phone number almost to every client. However the misunderstanding leads to the first date, which leads to many more.

Eventually George meets Alex's friends: Yuki, a business-school dropout turned chef; Zhou, a young and talented fashion designer and influencer; and Lando, a travelling sports photographer specializing on Formula One. Alex, Yuki and Zhou went to a posh International School together and know each other for a very long time. Alex and Lando met when they were both in the university looking for a roommate.

After dropping out of business school Yuki opens a restaurant "Toro Rosso" with Pierre Gasly, who oversees administrative side and staff, while Yuki is in charge of the kitchen. The restaurant becomes very popular, booked and busy. Alex takes George there for one of their first dates to impress him, and it works.

Lando has a bit going on with Oscar Piastri, a Formula One driver and WDC contender, where he posts only extremely bad and blurry pictures of Oscar on his F1 photography instagram to which Oscar always replies with dead-pan "Thank you very much. The best photos ever👍🏼". Other drivers' pictures are normal, good even.

On the days, when the restaurant is closed Yuki invites Alex and Zhou in, he sets up a small table in the kitchen for his friends to try out his new recipes.

Zhou is on his way to a big breakthrough in the fashion industry, Alex and Yuki regularly wear his street-wear designs. Through Alex Zhou meets Lando and George and they plan Zhou's first solo fashion show together.

I've never lived by the coast, but I bet if you do, you have to be constantly aware of crabs. Think about it: nothing is really stopping the ocean-bound crustaceans from crossing the road and heading towards your home. Only convention will prevent them from coming to snap up your vegetable garden. "It's never been like this before," you wail, as you watch the foundation of your house be denuded by a million snapping claws.

When I was a kid, I got to visit my city's Chinatown on a school trip. Keep in mind that the sum total of my pan-Asian cultural exposure up to this point was "sometimes cartoons look a little funny." I couldn't tell you what happened on the rest of the trip, but I can tell you this. There was a giant-ass snow crab sitting in a water tank, in the front window of a seafood shop.

His(?) glass prison was far too small. He was truly immense, about a meter wide in each direction, unable to do much of anything except for stare out the window at the passersby. Having been in either the ocean or some kind of nursery tank previously, I have to wonder what he thought of the whole thing.

I had fantasies of saving him, as you do when you're a kid and an injustice makes itself really blatant instead of even a little bit subtle. He was only like thirty bucks, and I figured I could put a leash on him, walk him into the bus, and head home. After that, it would be a matter of figuring out what crabs like to eat (lettuce?) and keeping him happy and healthy until he either passed away of natural causes or escaped. Again, I live very, very far from the ocean, so returning him was out of the question. Kids can commit (in their minds) very easily to almost twenty years of crab maintenance. They're famous for that kind of thing.

Ultimately, I left that crab behind. The tour was moving on, and I had to fulfill my obligations to education, rather than to rescue another living thing. It was probably a mistake. If you live near the coast, please give me a little bit of warning when the crabs turn on us. I figure they won't know to snip the fibre internet lines immediately, but hopefully I can turn their relentless, brutal pincers back from my soft human parts by telling them I sympathize with their plight.

Avengers Academy:

The original AA kids were tortured, lied to by their mentors & forced to be child soldiers. Half of them didn't even want to be there, Hank Pym promised to fix their broken powers and completely failed to help them in any way. And then they were kidnapped by Arcade for his Hunger Game. The new academy hasn't been around long enough to be properly judged but a Nazi bee man broke through security on day 1 so not looking good.

Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters:

Fifty-fifty chance you'll end up in a terrorist cell. Regardless, you'll end up a child soldier with zero privacy because most of the psychics (especially Charles) don't have any problem with reading your thoughts at any given moment. Half the teachers have been X-Force members and being a teenager won't stop you from becoming one either. Don't want to be a superhero? Just want to go to school? Fuck you. The worst super school by the widest of margins and I haven't even listed half the hazards.

Future Foundation:

Probably the safest one on this list but I'm subtracting points for making its students be in proximity to Reed Richards. I don't trust him not to run experiments on his own kids let alone anyone else's.

Pan Asian School for the Unusually Gifted:

Jimmy Woo is definitely using this place to recruit secret agents and Shou-Lou is racist to fox people.

Latverian Academy of Sciences:

It's weird that a school run by Doctor Doom is one of the safest on this list.

Braddock Academy:

Arcade also stole a bunch of their kids so they're also on the hook for child negligence. The Braddock's are also connected to the X-Men so there's a chance of getting dragged in to X-Men bullshit.

Strange Academy:

The staff let the students use extra dimensional portals to play tag and act surprised when the demons turn up? Also, maybe letting Magik send students to Limbo as a punishment will end badly. Just a thought.

Jean Zallinger's Hook from a Bullseye Step into classics version of Peter Pan. He's certainly not as dashing as Jason Isaacs, and I loved his teeth which I imagined all yellowed and reminded me of a skull. I also imagined his eye gleaming red.

And more D'aulaire art, from their Book of Greek Myths, Gaea and Uranus. I LOVE Gaea in particular - the way the river flows through her neck, the way his stars are reflected in the pools of her eyes...

...the birth of Aphrodite... I LOVE the colors here, the oranges and golds that mingle with the blue-green of the sea.

...and Perseus and Medusa. I loved Medusa's design in this book because it felt so unique, not usual depiction I was familiar with and also not Harryhausen's take.

Arthur Rackham's illustration of the third sister's encounter with the human children. This one definitely encouraged my naturist tendencies when I was little lol.

For the people who dont understand, or think the people panicking about the casting are overreacting.

Maybe I remind tall that proper East Asian representation in the show is already a mess.

East Asian background art and music but next to no traditions and customs

Western style dragons

Dragons as pets instead of literal gods (referring to the original set. I havent seen DR)

Character names, especially Lloyd who contextually should be Asian but is extremely white-coded. (Literally Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon)

Misunderstanding the Art of the Samurai and just making them girls with

mechs

Master Chen is (to some) a racist caricature

Calling things Kimono's when they're literally not. (S2 final battle suits)

Overall just not understanding what a ninja is

A many more things that are just....off

Now we let all these things slide for the most part because that's just how the show was written, and many of us were like 12 when it came out, so cultural representation didn't matter. And we all love this goofy little show.

Now think about other live actions that get things so wrong it takes you out of the story. I haven't read the school for good and evil but my sister loves it and when the movie came out and her faves looked nothing like their book descriptions it broke her heart.

Think about the first Avatar: the last airbender movie that cast a white girl as Katara. When the culture is based on the inuit people.

Percy Jackson: I love Leah Jeffries she's so fun to watch on screen, but she should be blonde. It has contextual and symbolic meaning in the book. And removing it for the sake of casting is...a choice (when my girl could literally get blonde weave from her locak beuty shop)

Jake Gylenhall as Prince Dastan in "Prince of Persia"

Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in "Pan"

Scarlett Johanson in "Ghost in the Shell"

Johnny Depp in "The Lone Ranger"

And so many more that yall can probably pull off the top of your head.

These things can be fixed like the Netflix ATLA. But let's be honest, it's hard to trust that proper representation of the culture they'll be trying to adapt won't be railroaded by casting that doesn't fit or make any sense. Simply because Hollywood prioritizes casting star/popular actors instead of paying attention to what they are adapting. The cast may not be entirely white because is 2024 and an all white cast is extremely rare. But the fear of how badly it could fail or fall alaprt due to lazy casting choices is valid.

I'm gonna try and trust the Hagemans to do right by the characters. But like the first list above, they don't seem to understand the culture either.

Hey everyone! Here is my submission for the Dan and Phil Phasquerade Tumblr Event! First off, as a surprise, I made not one, but TWO songs for the event!

The first one is the main theme song for the event as requested by @wdapteo! 生き甲斐 (Ikigai)! It’s not fully orchestral but I put a bit of strings and horns in there, so I guess it counts lol! I decided to go with a theme that was mainly based around guitars and synths. I also put in a few Asian instruments such as the koto to represent their trips to Japan. The title “Ikigai” is a Japanese concept that refers to one’s sense of purpose or reason to live and is a combination of the words “iki”(to live) and “gai” (reason). This concept can include people such as friends, families, and partners, as well as activities such as one’s hobby or pastime. It basically means that one can find joy in their life by being aligned with their purpose. I thought this concept would be perfect for the phasquerade because Dan and Phil’s ikigai or reason to live is each other. 🥰

As for the background image, I found a picture on Adobe Stock Photos of two masquerade masks that looked PERFECT for Dan and Phil. (The black one is Dan’s and the white one is Phil’s, obviously, lol 😂) Phanartists, feel free to use those masks in ur art! 👌🏻

The second song I made is an orchestral ballroom version of JVKE’s Golden Hour! It took me around two days to do, along with constant listening to the song to get the chords right and then add my own bits on top of it 😂 I’m really proud of this version because lemme tell ya, making orchestral music on Garageband IOS is harder than it looks 😭😅 I still can’t believe how far I’ve gone with making music on this app bc I started using it in 2018 and back then, I had a hard time navigating everything but I slowly worked my way up to where I am now, and tbh I still have far more to go! Anyways, here's a little introduction of me: I’m Kristy, aka @nothoughtsonlytrance. My pronouns are she/they and I am pansexual! (Fun fact, I found out I was pan around the same time that Dan and Phil came out in 2019 lol) I’ve been watching Dan and Phil since around 2012/2013 (so when I was around 12 or 13 years old) because that was the time when I really started watching YouTube and eventually found their channels. I vividly remember watching the Photobooth Challenge video and crying with laughter because it was so hilarious. I continued to look forward to seeing their videos after school and finally got to see them on stage in 2018 for their Interactive Introverts tour when they came to Richmond, VA. (didn’t get VIP tickets for the meet and greet tho so I still have yet to meet them in person 😭🤞) It continues to be one of my favorite memories of them and I remember crying when seeing them on stage. Their videos mean so much to me and I even made my quote for my college graduation cap “Embrace the void and have the courage to exist” because their videos got me through the last two semesters of college!😎👌🏻(Which got noticed by Dan and Phil in their Phan Twitter Memes 2 video!) Words cannot express how proud I am of them, especially after their coming out videos and how they feel more free to be themselves! And I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them! (And also us haha)

I think the song that will be playing when I take the stage is “Once Upon a December” from the musical Anastasia! It is one of my favorite musicals and I even got to see it in NYC with my family a few years back! Also, as someone who was adopted from Russia, this song really speaks to me personally. I don’t speak Russian fluently, only a few basic words and phrases that my parents taught me that they learned when they were adopting me, (I only speak English) but I’ve been trying to learn the lyrics to the Russian version of the song so I can sing along with it too. (Pronouncing Russian isn’t easy haha)

he knows some mandarin, but not enough to speak or read/write it fluently.

he has to take mandarin classes and fall back on translating apps. people point out how funny that is, but frank doesn't really think so.

his name has been anglicanised (fai to frank), but people still mispronounce his surname ("ama-zhang").

his family has lived in canada for four generations, but people still ask "no, where are you really from?".

people are surprised to learn that he's directly descended from periclymenus, the prince of pylos, and that he has greek and roman ancestry, because he doesn't "look greek or roman".

someone says in passing that they "hadn't realised the chinese were around then."

his canadian accent catches people off-guard.

he's asked if he has a canadian citizenship when applying for jobs.

the bullies at his high school aren't violent nor openly aggressive.

one says his eyes are so small and eggs him on to stretch them open with his fingers

someone holds up a banana to his arm and says they're the same colour

they've urged other students to complain that he smells like rice and ask to change seats.

his teacher tells him to speak up when he talks, because he's in canada now, not china.

she asks if his parents bound his sister's feet, and seems disappointed when frank says he doesn't have a sister. then she talks about china's one-child policy and it feels like it's frank's fault.

he experiences a weird disconnect between himself and his east asian/south-east asian friends who are second-generation immigrants and live in poorer socio-economic areas.

they joke about needing to help their parents with government paperwork, filing taxes, translating english, and frank sits quietly and isn't sure if he should laugh too.

he listens to his chinese friend talk to their mother on the phone and he can only understand the english that's mixed in with the mandarin.

their houses are filled with repurposed plastic jars that hold homemade pickled goods and pastes and sauces, three rice cookers (only two work), an airfryer that's stained and blackened, and they put lids on half-full pans and pots and keep them in the oven for later. their dining tables are piled with clutter from their mothers hoarding and reusing; and it's all so starkly different to his own that he feels like he's intruding.

someone asks if he can speak any mandarin, and he smiles, and shrugs, and says he's basically white, sorry. though he doesn't know what he's apologising for.

Crack Theory Time: Gohan’s family is just a big pun

Anyone familiar with Dragon Ball would know that the characters are often named after food and whatnot, and the same applies to Gohan, Videl, and Pan.

Gohan is Rice

Pan is Bread

And Videl is an anagram of Devil

Now, anyone who’s anyone would know that these are all intentional puns, and that Toriyama obviously intended their names to be seen that way. But I think there’s a little bit more to it than that. Let’s start with the simple one.

Rice and Bread are both grains, and Gohan is Pan’s father, not to mention both are part Saiyan

Here’s where things get a little iffy

In the bible, the Devil used Bread to tempt Jesus. Videl is Pan’s Mother

But what about Jesus? That has to equate to something too right? Well, Demon King Piccolo is the Other Half of Kami, who was God. DKP “reincarnates” but more accurately gives birth to Piccolo Jr, and since DKP and Kami are one in the same, this makes Piccolo the son of God, or Jesus

Piccolo and Pan have a very close mentor-student relationship, led on by Gohan and Videl asking him to pick her up from school (so tempting him with more quality time to hang out with Pan, or the plushies, your pick)

What about Gohan and Videl? What do they have in common? Well, this one’s the stretchiest stretch to ever stretch. In many Asian cultures, cooked white rice is put out for spirits or deceased loved ones to eat, as a way of honoring the dead.

Gohan is named after his Great Grandfather Gohan

So you could say Gohan is honoring his Great Grandfather, and also, Gohan and Videl are married. The Devil is a spirit. So we get Rice for the Devil

So, to summarize, The Devil(Videl) and Rice(Gohan) got together and created Bread(Pan), which was used to tempt Jesus, and that’s the reason Gohan, Videl, and Pan are all one family.

i read a lot. i don't make edits for every book i read, because i just... read too much. but here are some of my favorites of the first quarter of the year. in the order i read them:

The Goblin Emperor- the first book I read this year, first edit I made. One of my favorite themes of all time is the importance of kindness, and this book describes this through a slow but fascinating examination of a young outsider becoming king in a beautifully built fantasy world. I did make an edit for this one!

The Bandit Queens- Kind of a dark comedy about a woman in an Indian village whose husband has disappeared. The village believes she has murdered him, and she lets them because it means they'll leave her alone. This backfires on her when some other women in the village come t her asking for help getting rid of their husbands.

The Black Queen- After the first Black Homecoming Queen at the local high school is murdered, her mourning best friend decides to solve her murder.

Peter Darling- Queer, trans retelling of Peter Pan. Drew gave me this book. I don't know if there's any way for me to separate that. It's important to me.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns- (And it's sequel!) Asian-inspired retelling of Snow White, with the first one as just a delicious villain origin story of the Evil Queen. Genuinely don't know if it's ever been done as nicely as it is here.

Witch Hat Atelier- I don't read much manga anymore, but I'm obsessed with this one! The magic system is just so, so, so good and the art is breathtaking.

It's OK That You're Not OK- This book has been a lifesaver in grief.

Lone Women- Historical horror at its finest. A single Black woman in 1915 travels to Montana with a heavy steamer trunk that she keeps locked at all times. Because when it's opened, terror is released.

I need to ask something.

Now, I am in a country where LGBT is strictly seen bad and all.

And I am pan romantic.

I have a friend, my desk mate, she is pansexual.

And the thing is, I love her? I think? I am not sure.

She is a very touchy person, hugs, kisses, almost every friend.

I am not. I don't like even handshakes.

But you know, she puts her hand on my thigh, holds my hand, hugs, kisses on cheek, and all the things that make me question everything I ever learnt.

But she does all this plotonically.

It's not bc she does that to everyone, I am more close to her than our other friends, but still not in the top 5 (she has childhood friends outside of school, welp.) anyway, I just, like her.

But she told me before, she doesn't date friends. She doesn't date anyone she considers as a friend, everyone is in a friendzone if close enough. And I am her friend. I know that, she said it. She usually approach her friends like a sibling, she is the group mom and all, she is kind.

And I see her every day.

Even if we dated, probably nothing would change, because we are in a country like this, and her parents wouldn't want her to be gay but still not homophobic much, but my parents would kick me out -would still support me financially but- , maybe slap me or something. (I am not brown but our culture is similar to brown or asian families, so don't be surprised, it's not that big a deal here, most families would disown their kid, I am lucky tbh)

And I don't plan on coming out to anyone except my friends, logically, I want to have a job and be socially acceptable, so.

Anyway.

Back to her, I don't know what to do.

I don't want to confess, because it will only ruin or friendship since I know the answer is no.

But I see her every day. Hug her every day, flirt -as a joke- you know how girls are like. Even straight girls do those. But god. I feel so sad

I want to cry, but if I cry in school she will take care of me and ask what's wrong, but I don't want to cry in front of her bc of her, it's pathetic even if she doesn't know

And I can't cry at home, my parents will question.

This year was particularly exciting -- there were so many books that I loved or have at the very top of my TBR! So, without further ado, here's 9 of them for your TBR!

and then there's the unemployable stuff. i mean, i do community organising on the side. i do that pretty loudly too. in effect, my efforts have caused some change, at the domestic paper i worked for, and hopefully on the pan-Asian level. but yeah you wouldn't consider 'being trans' a value here. i can't put that on a resume because it outs me immediately

i should have dropped it. i shouldn't have picked up the second interview round at this broadcaster. i guess i wanted to see if i could still do it, four years after aspiring to be the best reporter from my batch at J-school and two years leaving my niche visual verification position.

if i spoke to my 24-year-old self, they'd have probably asked me why i wasn't on track to the goal we set out at the start. they'd probably have asked what we did in this time. they might be happy that I am a girl but they wouldn't be happy that I couldn't be a girl and an esteemed journalist at the same time. they might wonder why i felt overwhelmed. 'keep running', they might say.

they'd been full of energy then. they would be terrified about how the world was, but they were full of energy. to do things. to change things for the better.
