blog post week 13
Here is my very late bog post.  Semesters almost over and I can't wait. Unless i go insane first which might happen.  I got to finally photograph my zines in the pink bathroom and it was magical.  Really made my work seem real.

Artist Statement
          // Caroline Wright
This Body of work is tied together not by concept but by format.  I chose to work in the zine format because it is one of the fastest, clearest, and most easily reproduced and distributed methods of sharing information and ideas. The sharing of ideas is, I believe, one of the most crucial aspects of art. Because zines are fast to make and very cheap to reproduce, I have the ability to tell a lot of people, people who may or may not ever walk into an art gallery, about topics and issues that are important to me and that I feel the world needs to be informed about. My work deals with many topics, including the harm of the male gaze and the importance of feminism, natural health, and emotional turmoil brought about from personal experience that is simultaneously many women’s experience.  The anonymity of this format allows me to speak my mind about controversial topics without having to censor myself.

Blog post week 12 I now have 6 completed zines. My goal for this semester is 10 so I'm right on track, just need to do two a week to have them all by the final critique! After that I need to print copies and photograph them, then put together my petcha kutcha. Semesters almost over - exciting and stressful!!

Blog post week 11 My meeting with Professor Pipkin this week was super encouraging and helpful. She encouraged me to focus more on the fast, raw, personal zines, which is great because those are the ones I enjoy making the most. I'm really glad I changed my contract to zine making, it's made me really happy.

Blog post week 10 Critique went really well today. Michael marks was out guess and I was really thankful for that because he isn't intimidating and always has incredible things to contribute. I feel a lot more affirmed as my zines as art and to make more like the most recent more opinionated one.

Blog post week So....I changed my concept. Haha, here is the new plan. New contract Advanced Drawing Contract Caroline Wright Fall 2017 Concept For the remainder of the semester, I will be creating zines for my body of work. Though all created on different topics and in different styles, these booklets will be united by a common theme: to inform the public on topics that are important to me. This method of creating art and dispersing information has been around for almost 100 years, and became very popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I want to tap into this historical art form to enjoy a quirky way of making art, and to be able to teach the public about topics that I am either always being asked about or always wanting to share. Formal All of my zines will be relatively small in size and just a few pages long. They will be done in different styles, some being more illustration forward and others more collage style. These works will be created with a variety of mediums on paper. Specifics This way of working involves lots of collecting of different papers, scraps, magazines, etc. I will use any flat object that inspires me in my zines. To display them, the audience will obviously have to interact with the pieces so they will be laid out flat on a table. This casual way of displaying them will encourage the public to interact with the pieces instead of being too scared to touch a piece of fine art Goals By the final critique, I will have completed 10 zines for my body of work. Each of these will be on a different topic, connected by their unique format.

Blog post week 8 This week I went to a friends house who had a bunch of old albums and had fun flipping through them all and seeing the different album art. This collage album art for the band The Buzzcocks was my favorite. I forget sometimes that as an artist I could pursue doing art for things like albums or labels, I think I would really enjoy that but I'm sure it's competitive. I need to look into how one gets involved in that.

Low key wishing I had chosen Zines for my advanced drawing direction because Ive been super into them lately and I’m loosing creative direction for my drawings.  Too late now but I guess something to keep in mind if i take this class next semester.... Wednesday afternoon at the start of my break I started making one (not this one) and it was so much fun. Such a great creative outlet.

Advanced Drawing Contract
Caroline Wright
 Concept
This semester I want show the beauty in fragility.  My pieces will in effect be self-portraits, though not portraying my actual physical being at all.  They will rather depict who I am at my core, the sensitive side of my nature.  I want to show the positive, beautiful side of being emotionally sensitive and fragile, so that I and others of similar personalities can learn to embrace themselves for who they are instead of feeling as though they are innately flawed and alone.
Formal
I am leaving myself open to sever different mediums this semester, allowing myself to explore both watercolor paintings and more sculptural fabric works.  I think I can make these two mediums work together to create a cohesive body of work.  My works will all be on the non-objective/abstract spectrum of representation. I will be working with abstracted nature images and other delicate subject material, as well as complete non-objective work.
Specifics
My goal is to have ten complete works finished by final critique, probably a combination of 2D and 3D works, unless I end up favoring one over the other.
 Goals
I want to push myself to create unique work that stretches beyond what I normally create. I want to embrace non-objective work and use it to communicate my concept.  I want to do more writing and planning before creating my work.
