meruem and komugi are found family.

meruem who never understood what a family was and what familial love was like. it wasn’t in his nature. komugi only existing to play gungi— never allowed to lose lest her family sees her as trash. meruem playing a game with komugi and slowly starting to appreciate her presence, making his first true friend. komugi and meruem have always felt like a protective older brother with his new found younger sister. their relationship is something that i cannot think of as romantic. it’s one that is of finding oneself and growing to care for someone. it’s one that is finding someone who you can be yourself with and feel appreciated. they’re found family. they’re each other’s first friends.

togashi created palm to facilitate the new themes of love and coming of age in the chimera ant arc. and created multiple parallels between the two pairs
