idk if people are aware of what's going on within the current media landscape but it's fucked up. For reference, I work in animation. There's a TON of indie animation getting made and becoming popular which is awesome, but the thing that is scary about this is that it's kind of becoming a terrible influence on how business people view the creation of TV shows now. It used to be that you would develop a pitch and then bring it to a studio to make an impression and then it could get developed into a pilot to see how much interest was out there from buyers like broadcasters and audiences. Now, that is dead. No one wants to spend money on a pilot that may not garner any interest. The new model these companies have chosen to work with is one where you must essentially source all of the funding, research, development, promotion, and animation yourself. Once that is released and you have independently done all of this low wage or unpaid labour for the love of the game you MIGHT get something to go viral and then a studio will dare to look at you and say "oh hey that sounds pretty good. Sure, we'll pick it up."

Now this isn't true of every production but according to the business folks at Annecy and Kidscreen (two of the biggest animation events in the western animation industry) this is the way things are now. If you were wondering why so many animated series now are just rehashes of old franchises then that's your answer. Capitalism has advanced to a point where it's bad business to release anything that hasn't been done before but when new stories prove time and time again to be popular, it's up to independent artists to do this for very little money and a lot more effort just so another big company can swoop in and reap the benefits of its popularity without any of the work.

Apparently there’s a “kids shouldn’t be allowed in grocery stores” thing being spread on TikTok because they might scream or run around and look yeah that’s annoying but at a certain point you’ve gotta just put up with kids being a little annoying in public. Sure the kid pouring milk in the isles is the fault of a shitty parent and should be asked to leave, but a single mom with an otherwise controlled by crying toddler isn’t doing anything wrong.
