That anon worrying about Kcharts has no idea how Kcharts work.

Melon charts are now completely made of unique listeners. So it doesn’t matter how many streams you have, only how many unique listeners you have.

Bugs and Vibe are fandom driven platforms. You need a solid fandom streaming for you to make that happen. Or you gotta be a loved song. Korean entertainment scene is very normative: that’s why PAKs exist. A song hits and that’s all they listen to. Like hip hop listeners are monster streamers on Apple, casuals on Spotify etc. nope. In SK, everyone loves and then lives one song. Groups chart on most occasions. Jimin has the third most streamed (in 24 hours) album on Melon under IU and LYW with half the no of songs.

As someone who has lived in Korea, either you need mad hype and promo, or you need someone giving out melon passes or be a girl group to chart high on Kcharts these days. The only exception being Day 6 who have been killing it these days. Even SK’s beloved Lee Mujin is charting well below 30 on k charts. Korea’s top vocalist Baekhyun didn’t chart.

Korea loves trot. Korea loves bubblegum pop. Korea loves dance numbers. So unless you are pulling any of these, you are not about to chart high. Your assumption is wrong too, the encore happened and Like Crazy peaked well after that. Like Crazy peaked on Melon when it hit no 1 on Bill Board. Not when it launched. They all wanted to see what this American validation was. Once again, I was there physically in April. I saw it. That promotion period hell was mostly on Twitter. Jimin was front and center in Korea for weeks after. Who is not their taste and in their heads, the boys are on hiatus. They really aren’t looking forward to their music right now. May be once they come back things will be different.

Right now, if you look at Melon, some absolute unknown names are charting. kiss of life, TWS, Kepler, Mauve??, I haven’t heard half these names. Does that mean they are the most iconic musicians?

Trot is a genre popular in South Korea. I don’t really know how to explain it, but it’s very upbeat & repetitive. It’s the genre that LYW does (a very popular SK artist & JM’s rival when it comes to votings 😭). I’m not sure if you heard Super Tuna, Jin released it almost as a joke, but it’s kind of the same. “Moon” was his solo song in the MOTS:7 album. It’s not a ballad, it’s more upbeat & kind of has a rock element to it. I would say it’s more upbeat than The Astronaut. It had a bit of a choreo when he performed it live, but definitely not Jimin intense choreo. SK ate it up when it came out. Filter was definitely the stand out because it almost got a PAK, it was literally #2 just behind the title track “On”, but “Moon” was up there, too.

What I've been up to:

Got promoted at work for the second time in as many months

Shuttled between Paris -> Tokyo -> Hanoi... *twice* within 10 days on account of said promotion

Had to travel back to Korea for a funeral

Took some time to reflect and eat a ridiculous amount of kimchi (one more thing I have in common with Jimin), then went back to work

Been writing about music with some friends on another platform

Re-discovering Jin. I'm not sure what it is but some time ago it dawned on me that until now I never really paid Jin much attention. And so I've been deep diving into his music lately and it's fun.

Listening to a shit ton of music. I'm especially jamming out to Paramore, NewJeans, BTS, NCT, and Nirvana lately.

And about that, can I just take a sec to rant about NewJeans and gush about how good NCT's latest comeback is?

ARMYs are going to have to get used to seeing NewJeans do well. I saw some of the anxiety over 59 radio spins, PAKs, Min Heejin's interview, and whatever else, and just had to laugh. This might be harsh for some to hear, but I think ARMYs should be happy that the first taste of a challenge to what they think BTS's status is, has come from friendly quarters. Because over the next two years there will be many opportunities for several 'records' to be surpassed. Those possibilities are real and while I don't necessarily care, I understand a huge chunk of the fandom ties their idea of BTS and their worth/impact to the records they hold. This sort of challenge to the beliefs of that many people will cause a sort of implosion. And that's just sad when you remember that throughout all that time, NewJeans will just keep releasing good music and keep doing even better.

Now NCT. For the first time in three years I am not completely disappointed. (Too bad SM Entertainment is sort of self-destructing right now.) Ay Yo is giving me everything the boys are capable of. And by 'the boys' I'm referring to Haechan, Mark, and Taeyong - that trio + Ten are the only people I care for (in a very neutral sense), in NCT. Chenle and Jaemin occasionally stand out. But the real star this comeback is the song. 2 Baddies was an atrocity that didn't need to exist, but Ay Yo sits just at the sweet spot between disorienting experimentation and anthem hit. When you see the boys perform it it only gets better. I'm impressed in how their confidence has grown and here I'm speaking about all the guys. Taeil has always been confident but he and Johnny are really leaning into it this comeback. The whole group feels so much more cohesive this time around. By this I mean, NCT127 as it is now rivals SuperM for their 'avengers of k-pop' title, for whatever that is worth. I really like the song though that bridge and Jaehyun's part was a bit unfortunate - my taste.

The choreo is the sickest thing I've seen in a bit. This song alone has saved their comeback.

Idol of The Year: Jang Wonyoung

I'm pretty proud of how far Wonyoung has come. It's like seeing your little sister grow up. Over the past year, she's gotten multiple brand deals, is a household name at this point, and has shown off how she truly is the Nation's Center. Let's not forget how her singing has improved.

Everyone knows about Wonyoung now that she's in IVE. She's known for her visuals AND performance, is a very mature and well-bred person, and the muse/ambassador/model for several brands. And she's only eighteen! There's no stopping her.

So yeah, idol of the year? The bunny maknae Wonyoung.

Rookie Idol/s of the Year: NewJeans

NewJeans have achieved a PAK this early in their career. Their discography is flawless, and although I am not into them that much, I can confidently say they're one of the most successful rookies. They have it all.

Most Improved Idol: Miyawaki Sakura

Sakura was always seen as just a pretty face and second center. I really disliked that people saw her that way, even her fans, because she has so much potential.

After she debuted in LESSERAFIM, she proved all her haters wrong. Her dancing has improved, and so have her facial expressions. Hybe has let her sing more, which shows just how much she's practiced to get to this point of success. Miyawaki Sakura, I am proud of you!

Company of the Year/CEO: ?
