Edward Norton and Naomi Watts in The Painted Veil (2006), based on a 1925 novel by W Somerset Maugham. It was previously filmed in 1934 with Greta Garbo and Herbert Marshall. Herbert played Maugham in The Razors Edge (1946).
Maugham's entries among my best 1001 are Rain, Of Human Bondage, and The Razors Edge. The silent version of Rain, Sadie Thompson, with Gloria Swanson as Sadie is an honorable mention, as is Somewhere in the Night.

I’ve been a fan of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy for years, I’ve relistened it during multiple road trips. My fondness come from the deep desire I have to shameless ogle at wealth beyond what I could imagine and be given a bit of context, even fictional about the social strata. Additionally I love being reminded of my beautiful visit to Hong Kong once over a decade ago. I stayed at the Women’s YMCA high rise hotel at the base of a Victoria peak, from where I could walk up this jungly urban hiking trail which housed a small zoo of aviary birds. Most beautiful city park I’ve visited, quiet, lush, shady and tropical.
There is Something a bit interesting I’ve noticed about the series and Kevin Kwan’ss other novel Sex and Vanity, a spinoff of the trilogy.
Recently I happened to watch the film based on the EM Forster novel, Room with a View. My eyes bulged when I quickly realized the entire cast with the main characters with the same names danced out the same plot as Sex and Vanity…young socialite travels to Italy with a chaperone, falls for the quirky son of a wealthy businessman, they are caught in a scandal which separates them for many years only to be brought together in the end. It’s the same story and it’s strange to me that this wasn’t clearly advertised, like why doesn’t the Sex and Vanity book jacket say “modern retelling of Victorian classic”?
I know some people might be annoyed by this borrowing but honestly I’m a fan, as long as it’s clearly attributed and done well. If anything it made me want to find more connections. I don’t read much classic literature, and I was excited to sniff out another novel that I think inspired the trilogy.
The Painted Veil by W Somerset Maugham is of course about expats in Hong Kong. The main character Kitty being a frivolous lady who is firstly a philanderer but then her character grows beyond her childishness due to the consequences of her cheating. It’s similar to the character Kitty in the trilogy but perhaps the name just suits the personality in both characters.

Uploading all my Tomgreg art at once from the past few week before season 4 hits, who knows in what kind of mental state i'm gonna be once it does :')
#tomgreg#succession#dont even talk to me i started watching this show when i had nothing to do at work and now i watch it with averiel my good friend averiel#and we are going to watch s4 together and i feel physically ill from bein so excited#so ya thats what ive been up to... anyway. i love these idiots they desever nothing but the worst (affectionate)#im also a tomshiv lover btw. im the one who yells 'THIS IS HOW TOMSHIV CAN STILL WIN' while they are actively losing on screen#thats the kind of person i am#dont look at me (lying on the floor)#okay i was not going to say stuff in the tags and let the art speak for itself but i NEED to point out details in the wine Painting..#i put a lot of work into that one. thinly veiled metaphors and symbolism yknow..#greg is gripping the stem of the wine glass with his full fist. tom and greg are dressed in the same outfit (sock garters included)#greg look appalled but he is not doing anything about the spill. tom is fondly pouring greg more and more wine. he is doing him a favor#i colored the red wine the same way i would color blood :) oh and tom is not really touching greg#only holding the chair in place. greg is making himself look smaller than he is like usual#oh and @ the person who said that it's the inverse of the tom and nate scene i love the way you think. i did not think of that before#but god. yeah. i actually thought about the scene change from when roman uhh.. christens his office in s1. the one with the coffee machine#i always go insane at that cut. this is not exactly the same since it's more.. about emotions but yknow.. it can be.. the same...

Naomi Watts and Edward Norton are husband and wife in The Painted Veil (2006). This is Naomi's second honorable mention, after St Vincent. She has three entries among my best 1001 - King Kong, Mulholland Drive, and Birdman.

so im remaking an old picture of mine i did when i was 17. i wanted to see how i would remake this concept at my current level starting with re interpreting the concept. red veil, golden head dress, backlit and holding roses. a saint/holy vibe and a teal background. i remember that i wanted the original image to feel a bit foreboding and i wanted to focus more on that in this version.
process breakdown here
