Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka

From YTV releasing 1/11 about Soga, who, after a divorce and relocation to Osaka, seeks solace in dining at 26-year-old Sakae's restaurant. Unbeknownst to Soga, Sakae sees him as more than just a regular customer.

Ossan's Love Season 2

Five years later, will anything have changed? This is Japan, so probubly not. More here.

Perfect Propose

Fuji TV (the Pornographer series) adapting Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team includes Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (scriptwriter for “Old Fashion Cupcake”). Hiro’s so stressed at work he barely has time to eat so he passes out on the sidewalk. An unfamiliar face saves him and insists that they once promised to marry each other.

KOREA

Love For Love's Sake

Based on the Manhwa Love Supremacy Zone by Hwacha, this will star actors Lee Tae Vin, Cha Jun Wan, Oh Min Su and Cha Woon Ki. The plot of the drama is based on Tae Myung Ha, a young man who is dropped into a game based off of a novel that he knows. His mission is to make another player, Cha Yeo Woon happy. Cha Yeo Woon is Myung-Has favourite character in the novel. But then the game starts going completely different from the novel.

Love in the Big City

Movie adaptation of Booker nominated famous coming of age novel ‘Love in The Big City’ by Park Sang-Young. A cynical yet fun loving student writer name Young pinballs from home, to class, to Tinder matches. He and Jaehee, his female best friend and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their worries about life, love, and money with soju and Marlboros. But as time passes Jaehee settles down and leaves Young to face his problems on his own, finding comfort in the arms of the series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness and another who might be the great love of his life. Casting happened 9/23. This is a supernatural romance (my ghost boyfriend trope) ‘เดือนพราง’ by Violet Rain. A Bangkok writer is hired to write an article about an old mansion in Chiang Mai which is being converted into a café. He gets into an accident and nearly dies on his way there. After that, he sees the ghosts of people who died at the mansion, one boy catches his attention. Stars Benjamin Brasier (2 Moons 2) and Folk Touch Inthirat from Brothers. Trailer here.

GMMTV's university friendship Bl featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawin - basically ALL in the good kind of messy friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is gay. I'm IN! Trailer here.

A reminder we had c. 136 BLs release in 2023 but c. 55 that did not get made.

Favorite Thai BL:

Until We Meet Again. I have seen my fair share of BL now, especially Thai, but somehow, I always come back to this one. I think it just packs up SO many things I love. Soulmates, sure, but also great friendships, two very different romantic dynamics I both really enjoy, tragedy but with the hope and reassurance that things actually do get better, and maybe most of all incredible family and siblings’ history and relationships. I love the story, the way it’s told and the time it takes to weave itself, I love the characters and the cast, how it looks and the music. I have seen it a few times now and it still has the same grip on my heart than when I first watched it week after week when it came out.

Favorite Pairing:

While I don’t really like the concept of fixed pairing (let actors mix up! Surprise me! Make me fall in love with improbable pairs!), I’d lie if I say there are no actor duo I really enjoy seeing together so. I will say that I am very fond of and happy to get to see JamFilm again and will 100% track whatever they do together after that if it ever happens.

And there is something I find especially adorable in JoongDunk, I have to say (don’t ask me to explain, just cute).

Most underrated actor:

I pondered over that one for a long time, as there are many actors I’d love to see more recognized and all. But I will go with Big Thanakorn. I greatly enjoyed him in everything I have seen him in, and at this point I really would like a nice main role for him (where he f i n a l l y get the goddamn boy please and thank you).

Favorite Character:

Just… just one? Do you also want me to pick a single child to save? CRUEL. PITILESS. (ಡ‸ಡ)

Okay, okay, OKAY. Probably the hardest one of the whole bunch because my heart is huge and houses many m a n y characters whom I love dearly. But I think if I had to pick only one, I would go with In Chatpokin from UWMA. He is so bright and so brave, he loves so much and so sincerely, and he is so tragically young. He's flawed, in the way humans and young people are, but he's just.. he feels like someone I would also love in real life, and I do think he is fantastic as a character. So, yeah, I'd pick In.

 Favorite Side Character:

Once again after long deliberation etc etc... I will go with Rit from Triage. I was so incredibly invested in his survival and happiness it was borderline ridiculous. He was sweet and tragic and deserved so much better than the cards he had been handed at the start! I could have handled any end where he was doing ok that's how much i loved him (tho to be fair all the secondary characters in that show were great). Could not find a gif so have a still for him!

Favorite Scene in a BL:

That one is subject to change as often as the weather because I am a fickle beast, but brain provided the 'morning after' scene from Ghost Host, Ghost House. The quiet normalcy of it, the way they laugh and smile at each other, I really adored that scene.

Favorite Line in a BL:

I have a terrible memory and I can't really remember a lot of exact lines from the BL I have seen. EXCEPT I actually know a lot of lines from "To Sir, With Love" which must means something (it means i have khun chai brain rot, mainly) so that's where my pick will come from. And I think, both because of what it says about the character and his struggles and desires, and the way it is delivered (which always breaks my heart) it has to be:

"So my mother had to keep the secret that I like men. If everyone knows, the Song family will be ruined because of me. I don’t want to be the head of the association. I never wanted to. I just want to be me."

(not the scene I'm quoting but the emotion is The SameTM)

Most Anticipated BL (and why):

Right now I think it has to be a tie between I Feel You Linger in the Air (time travel! Costume drama! Pain! Women in love! Also excited to see more of Nonkul whose cameo in “Oh No! Here Comes Trouble” I really enjoyed)

and The Whisperer (horror! Fluke with long hair! Murder and mystery! Blood! Horror again! Did I mention Fluke with long hair?!).

Healthiest Relationship in BL:

We are getting more and more of those, aren't we? Making the choice more difficult but for once, a nice problem to have I'd say. I have seen some excellent choices but I think I will go with all the relationships in Secret Crush on You. Intouch and Daisy are OBVIOUS in how respectful and adorable they are, SkyJao make an excellent show of being respectful of your partner's desires and boundaries as well as the importance of being open about your vulnerability, and even TohNueah ok? Yes, yes they both are SUPER weird and borderline (to straight up) creepy BUT they learn to talk it out and to compromise so they can harmonize their weirdness into something that is respectful of the other. I'll pick the rainbow babies.

Most Toxic Relationship in BL:

I mean, I saw TT so … But ignoring this one, my mind immediately went to Mork/Pi from FUTS. As much as I wanted to like it, I just think that between the manipulation and the way it always follow the 'Mork insists it's best and Pi yields despite his objections and discomfort' formula, this is a recipe for disaster. (also I love Pi SO DAMN MUCH and I just want to pluck him out of there)

Guilty Pleasure Series:

I try to not feel guilty about things I enjoy, especially not on there. But if it's something I would not necessarily recommend when I want to look like I have refined tastes... I'd pick Rakdiao I think. It's a sitcom with all the genre imply from the humor to the taped laughs and over played reactions but I loved it! It's super silly and the characters are a bit cartoonish, but it's pretty and fun and when it picks up the relationship between Rak and Diao is actually really nice. And there are some genuine moments of really well acted emotions that I love replaying (Rak's realization that he loved Diao? ART)

Most Underrated Series:

So many of them! I’m so happy to see “He’s Coming to Me” second rising because it’s deserved, I do hope Suar’s success in La Pluie will lead people to give “You’re My Sky” a chance (because it’s great and so so SO pretty), and I hope people will watch “To Sir, with love” for more JamFilm post Laws of Attraction. But for this one I will pick two other shows (I know I know) that I feel deserve to have more people give it a chance (and that will feed into my ‘a sad story is not a bad story’ agenda).

First is “The Miracle of Teddy Bear”. It took me some time before I started this one because the echo I heard about it were so negative it kind of turned me off. And I think it’s a tragedy! Not only because I loved it (which I obviously did), but also because it has an extremely talented cast, it had so much to say about so many important things, while being very honest all along about the story it was telling. I think it’s underappreciated mostly because people wanted another story told (I know some people said the ending came out of nowhere and like… I could not disagree harder! It was the natural conclusion to that story!) and because I think Nut is an incredibly misunderstood character (I loved him beyond words, and he made me think so much of when @bengiyo said “y’all don’t like gay men when we’re not pretty, funny, sexy, or entertaining” because yes, most of the time he really is none of those things, he’s hurt and angry and he has ugly reactions and MAN I felt SO much for him). I mean sure, be aware that it’s not just a fluffy comedy before you get into it, and it has its flaws too, but I think it told a beautiful story that had a lot of heart in it – and for that it does deserve more chance, and if you were toying with the idea of watching this one, consider this your sign to actually try it!  

Second, I will say “Something in My Room”. I really enjoyed that one, not only because I have a soft spot for ghosts (tho if you follow me, you know I do), but because I thought it had a pretty solid story in there, and once again it’s a story that stayed true to what it was telling. It’s necessary to watch the uncut version (the cut one is apparently taking off huge plot-central moments), but I think it deserved more attention than it got. The cast is really good once again, it has a lot of fantastic and complex female characters, I think Nut Supanut was an absolute DELIGHT in this one (with an adorable smile), and while it sometimes wavers a little on some of the things it touches upon, generally speaking it was a solid little show (I especially liked the theater show, and everything with Big’s character alien metaphor). (also it has Big in glasses and that HAS to count for something)

Favorite Setting/Location:

Look, listen, listen. Give me an aquarium, ok? You can NEVER go wrong with an aquarium, there is something about the light in those either it’s blue, green, or slightly purple, about the overwhelming immensity of all that water while you’re safe behind the glass, about the pretty fishes… I do adore an aquarium. Peak romance peak colors peak location.

My Only 12% Ep 10 Stray Thoughts

I thought the last episode was excellent, so I'm fully prepared to jump to the end of high school.

Oh lord it's Skype. We've gotta be in the early 10s now.

Oh fun New cameo with "aloneww" being on his contacts list.

It's been four years, and Cake's mom mentioned university. Looks like we may be out of high school.

An early iphone. This is kinda fun.

Also fun, a whichishit to show that the buses babe A/C now.

A wardrobe shift, a little facial hair, some hair dye, and a few shifts in how they hold themselves and their expressions does a lot to age up characters.

It's kinda subtle, but both Earth and Santa have dropped their voices slightly. A lot of consideration went into portraying different periods in this show.

It's such a relief that everyone is still so fond of each other.

Let's talk about Eiw's wall. Multiple Twilight posters. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Avatar. Alvin and the Chipmunks 2. Alice in Wonderland. Bridge to Terabithia.

Cake instantly found Tal's photo and got jealous.

I loved the tentativeness about their first night back together before cuddling.

Very fun that Cake now has to be jealous about Eiw spending time on the phone with someone else.

Mall culture is thriving in Thailand.

I still like Cake's old friends. New and co are very good at building friend group dynamics.

Okay, I'm going to declare Earth Katsamonnat the best actor for actually managing to blush when accused of blushing, and Drake hasn't brought his ears to BL this year. Everyone else, pack it in.

Is interesting that Noey, one of Eiw's new friends, is calling out how codependent Cake and Eiw still are.

Oh, this Aoey girl is smooth, but Cake is only here for Eiw.

It is deeply refreshing to see Earth playing a character who seems comfortable in his skin. I am enamored with the way this version of Eiw moves around.

Does Cake know that he's jealous of Tal, and why he might be jealous?

I think the shop owner might be Mix, who played Dome in UWMA. He looks a bit different now that he's grown up.

Cake is just gonna mean mug Tal the whole time??

Lol, Cake is not going to let someone else touch Eiw.

It's kinda fun seeing Title in two things at once. He's playing Tal here, and Champ in Remember Me. Fascinating that both shows involve characters who age up.

Hmm, hanging out with Cream led to revelations about Cake's romances with American girls. It reminds Eiw that his feelings will likely remain unrequited. The slow zoom onto Eiw to isolate him as Cake and Cream wrestle in the background is really well done.

We really need to get inside of Cake's head, because he's been nervous all evening that Eiw might think he had girlfriends in America. We have four episodes to go, and I don't want that whole time to be about a communication gap.

That smile says a lot. I hope Cake knows how he feels about Eiw.

Oh, looking forward to Cake struggling with Eiw not needing him as much next week. Cake is a big personality, but it couldn't have been easy being a foreign student in America.

Watching:

Love Bill — Not the best but I love the color palette? The two leads are cute. It had potential in the beginning but they kind of lost it halfway thru.

Choco Milk Shake — I love the concept of this. It’s not my favorite Korean BL, but it’s very cute. I love Strongberry, so I’ll watch anything they produce and they never miss.

Why You… Y Me? — I love this show so much. It’s funny and smart and refreshing. It’s not entirely BL, but even the het couple is charming. Seriously, give this a go. Also! Guide from GHGH is in it with an extremely small role but I love that he's connecting two of my fave BLs together. WAIT OKAY ALSO Jet Somjet Saejang is so unbelievably attractive it makes me want to commit violence. Like. He just looks like that. AND is apparently friends ??? (https://www.instagram.com/p/ClfcAM1vNBv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) with Jackson Wang??? And on top of all that he can act. Cool. cool. cool. COOL. I think the BL couples in this have good chemistry, which is 1000% the thing I'm most drawn to. Especially Paul and Nice, I love them so much. I just hope they all get proper kiss scenes (that are in focus gdi). I would prefer they break out the polyamory, but I Know they won't, in which case, I'm rooting for Shogun to win the battle over Green (sorry Green!).

Between Us — I....Hate this one. ihkjshfdkjhdsf I’m only watching it because I like Boun and Prem, but this is so painful to watch. I also really didn’t like UWMA tbh... I don’t like really intense, dark stories in my BL. This one is much lighter than UWMA, but it’s soooo boring. 

Oh! My Assistant — A funny and cute one to watch in between the other ones.

Rewatching:

Ghost Host Ghost House... I have a problem, okay. My hyper-fixation is REAL. I’ve got BoyTod brain disease. Seriously. Their chemistry is ridiculous and my tinhat is so tight I'm 98% positive they have something going on. Idk what that is, but god I'm lost in the sauce.

Thinking of rewatching Enchante and Bad Buddy. There were a lot of good series this year. (Lord 2023 looks jam-packed too.)

Plan To Watch:

I still need to watch the Cherry Magic movie!! Maaaybe Eternal Yesterday, but I hear it’s super sad and I’m allergic to sad. I cannot wait for Candy Color Paradox in about a week! There are so many others I'm waiting for/I'm totally forgetting.

I’m up to ep 7 and I just realised IT WAS IN’S BIRTHDAY??? The first five mins of the first episode happened on his BIRTHDAY?? I am so upset 😭😭😭 I had an inkling feeling last ep when he was talking about his birthday in that shirt but now Korns bringing out a cake and singing happy birthday and I am so distraught. How can this show take me from sobbing to happy cutesy feeling to absolute heartbreak (and why do I love it so much!) Thank you for listening to my rant, if you are looking for me I will be ugly crying my way through a box of tissues 😭 (and please tell me there is a smidgeon of happiness on the horizon)

Feel free to scream lmao but yeah it's been 3 years since I watched this show so forgive me for only remembering the essentials djkghfd

But anyway I remember it was a sob-fest for me too back then lmao. It was a lot. I think it was for everyone. It was one of my first bls and I had no idea what I was in for lol. But I loved it. I'm generally not a fan of shows with more than 13-14 episodes because they always get boring at some point but this one was packed with action until the very last minute which was nice. I think it's telling that I can't really remember the content of most of the episodes. I liked WinTeam in Until We Meet Again. UWMA, on the other hand, is not one of my favorites. I could go on about why I don't find it to be one of the best BLs, but rather mediocre. The story was good, I like the idea of the red thread and being connected across generations thanks to fate. But DeanPharm just couldn't win my heart but were instead so...annoying. WinTeam, on the other hand, did. I liked their chemistry and how they interacted with each other, how easy they seamed to be with each other and how they could be themselves around each other. And while I wasn't necessarily eagerly anticipating Between Us, I thought it was nice to see them again.

Unfortunately, I found that their chemistry seemed to have faded. I just couldn't buy their relationship anymore. They may offer good fanservice behind the camera and truely like each other and take care of each other, but in front of the camera the spark was gone. Maybe it's because they weren't WinTeam from UWMA anymore. It's now WinTeam from Between Us and they seem to be different people. Even though we didn't learn much about their backgrounds in UWMA, we could sense that there was trauma and yet the story of them was deeper than in Between Us (imo). Now we know some of the background, some of the trauma, and we also see how they dealt with it.

Team breaks down, cries, remembers his trauma, has nightmares and Win comes like the knight in shining armor and rescues him from the moment. I know my take on the subject is a bit harsh. I also know that some wish for exactly that and such romanticization of rescue from trauma, from the spiral, from one's own mental problems through love is taken quite positively. I am more of a realist who has had enough of mental problems being played down, not being taken seriously, and trying to be portrayed as so simple that all that is needed is for the right partner to come along, two claps of the hands and you are on the road of healing (personal attitudes and experiences play a big role here). Here it is important to note that this is my personal opinion. If this series is exactly what you need right now and you like this portrayal, then that's absolutely fine. But since this is my hell site of a blog, I'll say what I think about it, and at some point, I didn't care anymore about the story or their traumas, I'll be honest.

The entire series felt like a very stretched out single episode. That's my impression of it. It was packed with characters and relationships (too many for my taste), but the characters remained blank. There was so much space to describe them, but the space was not used. If someone asked me what Between Us was about, I wouldn't know exactly what the story was. Was it dealing with trauma and how you can still love and find a home in another person? Was it about how friends with benefits become more? I don't know, were they friends with benefits? It started with a consensual ONS, okay, no problem. But after that, Team was more on the Blushing Maiden side of things. Even at the end, when their relationship status was settled, Team used the broccoli plushie as "protection" from Win's advances.

Yeah, I didn't warm up to the series, and in the end, I don't care about it. It will fade from my memory, and I won't miss those memories. It is not a bad series, but in my eyes very boring.

All things considered, that leaves me with 4.5 out of 10 stars.
