Brakes for the 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour 1932 Ford Pickup
Bringing Our Hauler to a Halt
Street rodders traditionally talk about performance, which normally has something to do with acceleration. But in the real world deceleration can be just as important, if not more so. Think of it this way, quick 0-to-60 times are for bragging, quick 60-to-0 times ensure you’re around to brag about both.
To make sure our Road Tour Deuce has the stopping power it needs we again relied on Wilwood Engineering. They’ve been designing high-performance disc brake systems since 1977 and can fit virtually any need with 300 different brake calipers, 200 rotor designs, 100 master cylinder designs, and a wide assortment of brackets, fittings, valves, and brake lines.
For our needs, Hot Rods By Dean (HRBD), builders of the Road Tour truck, installed Wilwood’s Forged Dynalite Pro Series Front Brake Kit. These kits are available for traditional non-ABS spindle applications on American muscle cars, vintage rods, and heavy weight drag cars. They’re based on the venerable forged billet Dynalite caliper that is suitable for a daily driver, serious competition, or the most discriminating show enthusiast. Most kits require no modifications for installation, and the 11-inch rotors and compact calipers provide plenty of clearance inside most 15-inch wheels. FDL Pro-Series kits can be used with either manual or power boost master cylinders.
In the rear HRBD added Wilwood’s FDL Pro-Series rear disc kits, as a clean, effective parking brake is part of the assembly. The kit uses forged billet Dynalite four-piston calipers, 12.19-inch one-piece drum/rotors with high friction pads. Optional caliper finishes and rotor designs enable the builder to personalize the style and optimize brake performance for every individual application.
The heart of our brake system is a Wilwood aluminum master cylinder. They are available machined from high-pressure dies castings in 7/8- or 15/16-inch bore in three finishes—plain, ball burnished, and black e-coat. These master cylinders are designed primarily for manual applications and are designed for mount flanges with bolt centers from 3.22 to 3.40 inches. The stroke is set at 1.10 inch with a volume ratio of 2:1 between the primary and secondary chambers. Machined from high-pressure die castings, each master common measurements for most domestic cars and trucks from the mid ’60s to present, and offer fluid outlet ports on both sides of the bore. The cylinder weighs only 3 pounds, a 75 percent weight savings over most cast-iron OE-type master cylinders. They also offer a combination proportioning valve kit, which includes brackets and stainless lines specifically for use with this master cylinder (PNs 260-13190 or 220-13189 for retrofit kit).
To adjust the front/rear brake balance HRBD added one of Wilwood’s new generation of adjustable proportioning valves. Pressure adjustments range from 100-1,000 psi and provide for a maximum decrease of 57 percent inline pressure by way of a fine-thread knob. HRBD also added Wilwood 2-pound residual pressure valves, which retain minimum brake line pressure and are beneficial when the master cylinder is mounted below the horizontal plane of the calipers and fluid drainback occurs from gravity and vibration, resulting in excessive caliper piston retraction and a longer brake pedal stroke. The minimal 2-pound residual pressure prevents fluid from flowing back without causing the brakes to drag (with drum brakes, a 10-pound valve is used to compensate for return spring tension).
Brake Pedal Guidelines
To prevent the brakes from dragging the brake pedal must be free to return completely when no pressure is being applied. In some cases, the master cylinder spring (internal) may not be strong enough to fully return the pushrod; in this case an additional pedal return spring can be used.
Another consideration is the pedal ratio, or its mechanical leverage. The ratio calculated from the length from the pivot point of the pedal to the center of the foot pedal divided by the length from the pivot point to the master cylinder pushrod. If you’re uncertain about the pedal ratio for your application, a 6:1 ratio is an excellent starting point.
Pad Bedding
After installing and bleeding a new brake system it should be tested. Make a few low speed stops to check for erratic behavior (pulling to one side, strange noises, and so on). Check for leaks and double-check all fasteners. Once the brake system has been tested and determined safe follow these steps for the bedding of new pad materials, which basically means driving the vehicle as you normally would. According to Wilwood, “A pad is best optimized by bedding in the same conditions and temperatures that the pad is designed to operate in. A street pad can be optimized through typical street type driving. Performing a series of stops that simulates street driving in a safe environment will give the pads a chance to bed-in.”
We know that with the a Ford Performance Parts 347 under the hood the 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER 1932 will have plenty of go power, with the Wilwood brake system it will have the stopping power to match.

Wilwood uses the latest in design software and manufacturing techniques to provide state-of-the-art brakes systems.
This is Wilwood’s Forged Dynalite Pro Series Front Brake Kit. It came complete with everything necessary to bolt on to our early Ford spindles.
Wilwood’s aluminum front hubs are drilled for two wheel lug patterns, 5-on-4.5 and 5-on-4.75.
There are three pieces to the front hub assembly—the hub, rotor, and adapter plate, or hat.
The hats are attached to the rotors with the supplied hardware; HRBD applied thread-locking compound to all the fasteners.
Next the rotor/hat assembly is attached to the hub.
The front hub assembly comes with quality bearings and seals. HRBD packed the bearings with AMSOIL INC. wheel bearing grease.
This is Wilwood’s FDL Pro-Series rear disc kit with their combination rotor/brake drum that houses a small mechanical parking brake assembly.

2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour 1932 Ford Pickup Floor Pan
How to Put 10 Pounds of Stuff in a 5-Pound Cab
There has been a frenzy of activity at Hot Rods by Dean (HRBD) where the construction of the 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour 1932 Ford pickup Presented by Ford Performance Parts is well under way. The truck is based on a chassis from Roadster Shop (RS) equipped with front suspension from Pete & Jakes, Flaming River steering components, and RS four-bars and coilovers in the rear.
With the chassis, the new United Pacific sheetmetal, a Ford Performance Parts crate engine, Hughes Performance transmission, and a Winters quick-change gathered up, Dean Livermore and the crew at HRBD set about making the pickup Road Tour ready. Of course one of the major issues to deal with when building any street rod is where to put everything in the passenger compartment that’s required to make it go, steer, and stop, while providing a comfortable environment for its inhabitants. That challenge is even greater when working with a pickup, but the crew at HRBD are masters of making the most out of the space available.
The first challenge was to fit the engine and transmission. We chose Ford’s M-6007-X347DR, which is catalog speak for a 347ci small-block that produces 360 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Behind it is a GM 4L60 overdrive automatic with a custom bellhousing that allows the Blue Oval and Bowtie components to connect. To accommodate the engine and transmission combination HRBD modified the firewall and then fabricated a custom transmission tunnel and floor panels.
As space is at a premium in early pickup cabs, ergonomics and packaging of all the components requires planning. For a clean, uncluttered look, and to save valuable space, HRBD installed a Flaming River 30-inch roadster steering column. It’s topped with a leather–wrapped flat-spoke Corvette steering wheel. The throttle pedal assembly and brake pedal pad are Lokar.
To position the necessary switches within easy reach an extension across the bottom of the UP reproduction Deuce dash was added; it also houses oval A/C outlets for the Vintage Air Gen II mini evaporator. The controls for the Vintage Air system, the Custom Autosound stereo, as well as the Lokar shifter and hand brake are all housed in a custom center console on top of the transmission tunnel. In order to ensure our Road Tour leader Jerry Dixey travels in comfort, seating is provided by Procar by Scat bucket seats and to keep him entertained there’s a pair of Custom Autosound speakers tucked underneath.
The 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour kicked off in June, but it’s not too late to sign up for one of the remaining Road Tours. For more information, check streetrodder.com or call the Road Tour Hotline at (800) 664-1362.
Hot Rods by Dean began assembly of our 1932 Ford pickup by mounting the new United Pacific cab on the Roadster Shop chassis. Note the shape of the stock firewall.
A testfit of the engine confirmed that the center of the firewall would have to be modified.
When modifying a firewall the challenge becomes making the intrusion into the passenger compartment as small as possible.
The center of the firewall was cut and moved to the rear to provide engine clearance. Triangular-shaped sheetmetal fillers filled the gaps.
With the firewall modified Dean Livermore made cardboard templates for new floor panels.
The shapes of the cardboard patterns were transferred to 16-gauge sheetmetal. An additional 5/8 inch was added on the outside and rear of both pieces for flanges.
With the shape of the floorboards laid out they were cut to shape on a bandsaw.
The additional 5/8 inch on the edges of the new floorboards were bent 90 degrees on a brake. This would allow them to register in the framework of the cab and be at the same level as the original wood floorboards.
While Dean Livermore was busy making floorboards other members of the crew fabricated mounts for the Vintage Air evaporator.
The dashboard is a reproduction of the original from United Pacific. HRBD added a custom lower extension.
Flaming River supplied the entire steering system from the leather-wrapped wheel, chrome steering column, dash mount DD shafts, and Vega steering box.
It’s well thought out custom touches like this A/C evaporator mounting bracket that help save space in a crowded passenger compartment.
Along with the Vintage Air unit, the US Shift stand-alone transmission controller is mounted under the cowl. Note that all the fasteners in the truck, including those securing the evaporator, come from ARP.
With the floor panels in place the next chore was to fabricate a transmission tunnel. Note how the floor panels are level with the doorsill.
Here the transmission tunnel is beginning to take shape. The floor panels have had stiffening ribs added.
Along with the floor panels the completed transmission tunnel is welded in place and a tubing mount for the seats has also been added.
The transmission tunnel mounts the Lokar shifter and hand brake. From the inception of the Road Tour in 1996 every car has been equipped with Lokar products.
With the driver seat in place, the locations of all the controls were deemed to be correct and the instruments will be easy to see.
This is the beginning of the center console that will be added to the transmission tunnel.
With the top bent to shape, sides were added. Note the flanges that will attach to the transmission tunnel.
Housed in the console are the A/C and Custom Autosound controls. It also has two 12V electrical outlets.
When mounted, the console is purposeful but unobtrusive. A boot around the shifter will be fitted when the upholstery is installed.
Under the seats are a pair of Custom Autosound Undercover II speakers with an 8-inch ’woofer and two Piezo tweeters in each unit.
The Procar by Scat Classic Series seats have injection-molded foam that is comfortable and will keep its shape. The incline of the backrests is adjustable with a lever on the outside of each seat.
