Random movie review...

This is another movie I was hesitant about watching since I loved the original Overboard (1987) with Kurt Russel & Goldie Hawn. My mom loved the original so when I was old enough she turned me into a fan.

Let’s start with acknowledging the original. There was on screen chemistry between Russel & Hawn. The movie was written like a drama with some funny things that happen. Yes it was kind of creepy that the man gets the woman to be his servant and caretaker; however, it was actually pretty funny.

What I loved about the original was that Hawn’s character learned to be confident in herself. Everyone acted like she was a ditz but as soon as she’s in the new life she grows. She teaches a boy to read & she grows a backbone. Russel’s character learns to ask for help and that part of being a family is to rely on each other.

This 2018 version is - and it hurts me to say this - a shell of the original. I’m sorry!

The actors are all good. I love Anna Faris. She always makes me laugh and I hope for her sake that people don’t take her for granted because she’s a really great actress. I’ve seen a couple of her more serious roles and she definitely has a lot of talent. I love her. All the other actors were good but I found myself more interested in John Hannah’s character than anyone.

I’m not sure why that is. His bit parts just had me captivated.

I didn’t feel any chemistry between Anna Faris & Eugenio Derbez. Everyone did solid performances but I just didn’t feel that chemistry.

I liked the role reversal because it’s a little less creepy. I really liked Leo connecting with people, the kids, making friends. The construction scenes were funny.

There were a few funny parts here and there.

However, from the start I felt like this movie was written to be a comedy. Meaning, it felt more...goofy. From Leo showing off his tattoo, to requesting a drink, etc. It wasn’t him just being spoiled. It felt goofy but it wasn’t actually funny.

Part of the humour of the original was Hawn acting like a snob. Here Leo denies his new life but he doesn’t do it in a snooty way. That was probably the fault of the director or producer but it just felt...off. The other big thing that bothered me was the music. When something silly was going to happen this annoying music started to play which just irritated me. All the other music in the movie was fine, just not those silly parts. It kind of ruined it a little.

A big part of this version is the introduction of Spanish culture. It was missing in the original. I have no issues with this except that I feel like there was all this effort put into that and very little on the rest of the story.

Faris’ character struggles and eventually good things happen. I prefer how the original it was Hawn’s character helping Russel’s character discover something about himself. He learns to go after his dreams because of her.

Faris’ character knows what she wants but is stuck. I feel like the writers should have had her bring out a dream of Leo’s he didn’t know he had.

His sister mentioned that he helped her decorate her apartment, then he was talking about the pillows in another scene. I honestly thought he’d discover a hidden desire to be an interior designer or something. That never happened.

In this version the children were girls & there were only 3. In the original it was 5 boys (I think). Also, the girls were well behaved and in the original the children were undisciplined and wild. I’m not sure why all children had to be well behaved. Even the eldest wanted independence but it was fairly tame.

I like the idea of someone having such a profound effect as taming the wild beast...in this case, the children.

That said, the girls in this movie can really act. When they started to cry, I teared up.

Overall the movie was alright but I feel like Anna Faris was underutilized. John Hannah felt more compelling than almost everyone else. And this movie wasn’t charming like the original. It wasn’t that funny either. It lacked depth and was just...goofy. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t very good either.

I prefer the original & I probably won’t see this version ever again. I was disappointed.

Well #memorialdayweekend allowed me to see two movies #Solo and #Overboard. I have to say the stuff I enjoyed in Solo I loved and the stuff I did not enjoy I don’t hate, but I am disappointed by 6.5/10. Overboard kept so much of the original plot and script but changed just enough that made it so watchable it is a very cute 9/10.
