(1/2) Over the weekend I visited the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum at Thorpe Abbotts and IWM Duxford so thought I’d share some pics in case it’s of interest to anyone!

The museum exhibits are mostly housed in the (original!) control tower pictured, the displays are a little scattershot so better if you’re already familiar with the history (i.e. watched mota) but it’s very personable with lots of personal collections & items!! Some of my fave things:

Detailed displays about the Bremen/Munster missions

I was really charmed by this map/diary- the missions the author flew are drawn on in the red lines & the simplicity of the handwritten notes is so stark and heartbreaking

(They had a whole display dedicated to Rosie as well which I didn’t take a picture of for some reason 😭 I think because it was mostly photos/info that weren’t necessarily ‘new’ to me esp having read the book but it was really sweet!)

alan alda storytime

the full story from one of the screenshots of my previous post.

story begins with my archaeology professor showing a slide of alan alda in the early 2000s holding some mammoth bones and asks the class if anyone recognizes him. i had watched some MASH with my mother when i was little and had also seen the movie The Object of My Affection, so i raised my hand and said it was alan alda. he lit up and said yes, it was, and told the rest of the class he used to be on this old show, and that when we got more into the bioanthro side of things, remind him to 'tell his alan alda story'.

about 2 months later, we are in bioanthro, and i remind him. he gets excited and says he included slides to talk about it.

he tells us how he had just moved to a new city, and he had taken a university job in order to get insurance for his new family [which he didnt get but thats neither here or there]. he gets news that his job is going to be working with Scientific American Frontiers, hosted by the one and only Alan Alda. my prof was thrilled, he loves MASH, and while he specifically wouldnt be involved in the process [being a presenter, working with alan, etc] he was allowed to be around incase they needed help.

i dont know the specific episode, or if it can be found anywhere, but the topic was early man and tools, and how there were mammoth bones that specifically had cuts that could only be made with tools, not by teeth from an animal. they had finished filming for the day and just needed B-roll of some lions at the local zoo chewing some bones [part of the experiment], and alan got a call. he asked if he could head out now, because he needed to get back to his hotel now, and the call had been important. the producers said sure, go ahead, and alan asked if someone could give him a ride.

my professor, having the chance to actually spend time with someone he idolized, and being a stupid late 20s-something, volunteered immediately. stupid why? well, i said he'd just moved there. he didnt know where the hell anything was, and he didnt have GPS available to him, he was just really excited. so they get in the car and start driving.

as i said in my previous post, alan alda had about 20 minutes with this random guy, and found out pretty quickly that he was an archaeologist, and the amazing topic of conversation that he picked was the [then new] theory that we developed agriculture specifically to make booze, and that the rest of the stuff was more or less a biproduct. which is pretty on-brand honestly.

after a while, alan catches on to the fact that this guy clearly has no idea where the hell hes going, and that they've been driving in circles around the city for a while now. he [reportedly very politely] said that actually, this here was his stop, and thanked him for the ride. he then most likely called a taxi that actually knew where it was going, and got to his hotel.

turns out the call was about The Aviator! the call was important because he learned it was confirmed he in it and they needed him to get over there.

its not a glamourous story, but its the only story i got. my prof reported he was a funny guy, and despite slightly kidnapping the poor man for a while, he was the picture of kindness and personability. and clearly he likes telling the story and it left an impression, because he took time out of our already-short lecture to tell a class of 20-somethings that had no idea who Alan Alda was about it.

Ice isn’t either – he takes his vodka on the rocks for a reason. They’re flying jets today, and that’s a bitch to do with a pounding head. Ice hasn’t puked in his jet ever, and he isn’t interested in breaking that record.  “She was fun,” Ice reports. “Chipper missed out.”  “You started that?” Slider asks. “I thought I heard something going on.”  “I ended it,” Ice corrects.  “And now everyone knows who’s really on top,” Slider grins. “Nice one, Kazansky.” This isn’t the first time they’ve pulled this routine. Slider had stuck around him last night, introducing him properly to Maverick and the few others from their class that he knew and Ice didn’t, until Ice had flicked his fingers to let him know that he was fine to fly solo. If all the others only ever saw him with a taller than God alpha at his back, they’d start to think things that Ice didn’t want them to think. There’d be enough of Slider backing him during class and in the air – Ice had to go it alone on the ground. He’s dependent on no one, and won’t let anyone think otherwise.  “They’re all fairly well behaved,” Ice comments, pouring himself the remnants of the coffee that linger in the coffee pot and grabbing the weight next to it on the counter. He needs to get his reps in anywhere he can manage them. “Better than Squad 213, at least.”

Thinking about Jonathan some more; while I do think he isn't very interesting or particularly filled with depth compared to the other Jojos, the big thing he has going for him is that he's a dude you just can't really hate. He exudes this good vibe that makes you like him despite not being a very unique protagonist, especially when he's surrounded by nasty characters like Dio and the rest of Phantom Blood's tone is somewhat bleak as he's put into tragedy after tragedy. That's probably what makes people so quick to defend him from people calling him a bad protagonist for not being interesting enough- he's just... a likable guy.

I havent like. disliked s5 of Voyager but I have found it to be lacklustre in that I think many episodes are decent but not particularly memorable, with a few gems to be found (Bride of Chaotica!, Dark Frontier, as examples) but Warhead so far has been not only a top favourite of this season but probably a top favourite of this entire series

something else I really love about feast and famine is how wwx isn't all 'wow lan zhan you're the best I can't believe you've been putting up with me I'm SO grateful you're literally perfect even though I'm so needy thank you so so so much' bc that sentiment arises in a lot of fics that handle his trauma or mental health and it's SO tiresome not to mention ooc. like it's not there for no reason bc wwx did express gratitude in canon and lwj IS a really good and supportive partner, but it's really refreshing to see wwx in a stable and reliable enough relationship where, except that one time he was triggered and panicking, he literally never once doubted that lwj would support and stand with him, nor did he ever feel the need to even thank lwj for being a good partner, even through the extremely heavy and difficult work of supporting him through what happened

and they DO communicate a lot, it's more that the gratitude is left unsaid because it's mutually understood to be unnecessary. and as much I'm in favor of them communicating their gratitude to each other, I feel like this dynamic for them is so much healthier and more mature and illustrates how strong their relationship is and how much they trust each other. also the idea of lwj as this...saintlike martyr who nobly supports and reassures a self-hating wwx is really tiring. he has his own struggles to be sure, but he has them away from wwx and the writing doesn't frame him as some tragic, self-sacrificing hero for it. like I love lwj but that's what it should be about, right? this was always going to be wwx's story first and foremost and I really appreciate works that let it be that
