Queer autonomous zones and participatory publics
Bobby Noble points to ‘the simultaneity of the relations between gendered embodi- ment, sex play, and racialization inside homonormative communities, neighbour- hoods and venues for cultural production’ (Noble, 2009). Similar critiques of the queer community have been taken up by Gay Shame anarchist activists organizing in the late 1990s. In That’s Revolting! Matt/Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore docu- ments their personal experience in Gay Shame collectives in San Francisco and New York City. ‘Gay Shame emerged to create a radical alternative to the confor- mity of gay neighbourhoods, bars, and institutions – most clearly symbolized by Gay Pride’ (Sycamore, 2004: 238). Gay Shame is ‘mostly anarchist leaning’ (2004: 239), and organizes gatherings, events and direct action protests against capitalism and intersecting oppressions. A San Francisco flyer asks, ‘Are you choking on the vomit of consumerist ‘gay pride’?’ (2004: 239). Another poster entitled ‘Gay pride, my ass: It’s all about gay shame’ (2004: 240) announces an ‘autonomous space’ (2004: 240) outdoors on Tire Beach with performances, art-making, bands, instal- lations, DJs, food, kidspace, and ‘politics and play’ (2004: 240). The event hosted ‘speakers on issues including San Francisco gentrification and the US colonization of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, as well as prison, youth, and trans activism’ (2004: 241). The range of issues and events in the ‘autonomous space’ point to a very different kind of sprawling, engaged public than Berlant and Warner’s indoor, circumscribed, queer counterpublic. ‘We encouraged people to participate in cre- ating their own radical queer space, and people argued about political issues, painted, poured concrete and made a mosaic, dyed hair, and mudwrestled naked’ (Sycamore, 2004: 241). Participation is a key element in the formation of a ‘Queer autonomous space’ (2004: 237) or zone, as are multiplicities of political focus (Puerto Rico, kids, youth, prisons, trans people, art production, gentrifica- tion and so on) and an over-arching anti-capitalist practice that includes free entrance, barter and trade, dressing to ‘ragged excess’ (2004: 240), and the provi- sion of ‘free food, T-shirts and various other gifts’ (2004: 241).
Queer autonomous zones thus are open-ended spaces in which participation of all comers is encouraged through a direct (rather than liberal) democracy model. They are facilitated via engagement with a multiplicity of intersectional anti- oppression politics. Interactions in queer autonomous spaces develop sustainable social relations and value-practices, based on mutual respect, consent, sexual lib- eration, and non-normativity, in which people engage in open-ended processes of developing alternative ways of being, feeling, thinking, engaging, acting and becoming-liberated. The question is – what’s next? How do we continue to expand our movements and theorizing to extend the becoming-liberated of queer?

[1] Following Vade’s important article (2005) advocating the ‘Gender Galaxy’ which reveals the falsity of the gender/sex divide and the negative legal impact of this distinction on trans people, I am using the term ‘gender’ to be comprehensive.
[2] In the USA this is particularly true. In Canada same-sex marriage and human rights are protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and immigration processes are begin- ning to include same-sex partners in sponsorship claims, as well as considering persecution for sexuality as a basis for refugee claims. These processes however remain heteronorma- tive. I’d like to thank Melissa White for sharing her insights and research on this issue.

Once again men show everyone why we want male free spaces
ByYuliah Alma September 18, 2023
Two “gender critical” events in San Francisco were stormed by Antifa this weekend, where trans activists showed up with signs threatening to murder women critical of gender ideology. At one conference held at a Hilton hotel, an employee was assaulted while trying to prevent damage to the property.
Approximately 100 members of the US chapter of Women’s Declaration International (WDI), a global group of volunteers who campaign for women and girls’ sex-based rights, were in attendance for the conference, held on Saturday at the Hilton. Speakers presented on topics such as women’s right to free speech in academia and issues concerning lesbians, black women, and desisted or “detransitioned” women – females who previously identified as transgender, but no longer do.
But attempts were made to sabotage the conference when Antifa and trans activists began to gather outside of the property in protest, some of whom held signs calling for women critical of gender ideology to be murdered.
Kara Dansky, an outspoken women’s rights activist and president of WDI USA, sent Reduxx footage of the Antifa trans rights activists from inside her hotel room. The video shows a group of protestors who had gathered directly in front of the hotel’s entrance.

“The people outside don’t like it that the US Chapter of WDI wants to have a meeting of women where we gather to talk about our rights,” Dansky was heard narrating in the video.
The demonstration was described as “fairly normal” in the beginning, but Dansky explained that the protesters began entering the hotel and “essentially terrorizing hotel guests and security alike.”
Antifa activists were attempting to enter the building through a third-floor entrance, prompting hotel security to corral them and expel them from the proximity of the doors. In order to prevent them from entering again, hotel staff locked nearly all doors and access points. Only the front door remained open for hotel guests to freely enter and exit the building, while security attempted to keep at bay the protesters who tried to enter.
Police later arrived to secure the entrance to the building, with footage showing four officers guarding an indoor bridge that connected the hotel to its conference center.
Despite the presence of police and security, multiple incidents of vandalism occurred. Belissa Cohen, a women’s rights advocate in attendance, shared photos of stickers and flyers placed in the vicinity of the hotel by protestors.
Slogans such as “Arm trans women, disarm cops,” and “Dykes hate TERFs,” were seen plastered on the Hilton signage and in surrounding areas, as well as stickers featuring the Antifa logo.
But the trans activist detractors didn’t stop at vandalism, and continued to escalate the situation by taking a hammer to the Hilton’s outdoor sign.
Dansky explained to Reduxx that a hotel manager saw the destruction, and attempted to intervene to prevent further damage. In response, one of the protestors physically assaulted him, reportedly punching the staff member in the head.
Reduxx reached out to the Hilton for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
But this wasn’t the only event critical of gender ideology that was targeted in San Fransisco that day.
On Saturday evening, a nearby venue was hosting an art exhibit titled “A Nasty Piece of Work: The Art of Dissident Feminists.” The event was intended to host the art of women impacted by gender ideology, and included the work of detransitioned women.
At an unknown time on Saturday evening, trans activists spray-painted the exterior of the venue with anarchism symbols and the threatening message, “No TERFs on our turf!”
TERF, an acronym meaning “trans exclusionary radical feminist,” is frequently used to incite violence against women critical of gender ideology.
The art exhibit was held Acceleration Place, and WDI USA conference attendees were made aware of the show and invited to its opening reception.
Laura Becker, a detransitioned woman, had her art featured alongside the works of other feminist creators. She presented a self-portrait of her chest, scarred by a double mastectomy surgery, to promote awareness around the medical risks associated with so-called “gender affirming” surgeries. Becker has previously had her work censored by online DIY retailer Etsy for advocating against gender identity ideology
Other curators of the show included feminists, artists, and art collectors who are members of San Fransisco-based group Women Are Real.
A Women Are Real representative confirmed that police were contacted and a report was made Sunday morning when the graffiti was discovered.
She told Reduxx: “I was saddened, but not surprised when I saw the vandalism. [Due to the] violence and property damage to the [Hilton] hotel during the daytime on Saturday…it seemed unlikely the gallery would remain unscathed.”
The roaming show is still set to run until October 15, and will be in Los Angeles as its next stop.
Women Are Real will be at San Fransisco City Hall on September 18 to perform a demonstration and have said they are prepared for violence. The demonstration will be live-streamed.

Jimmy Page performing with Led Zeppelin at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, June 2, 1973.
Kezar Stadium in San Francisco was another big outdoor show.
We continued the circuit of auditoriums and we started to do a couple of nights in the major cities like Chicago and Detroit to try to supply the demand. But we never did. We didn't have the venues in England to be able to do what we had achieved in America. But in the States, the market had grown and so they accommodated it with the venues to match.
And no two nights were ever the same. That was the beauty of it all.
These larger venues were what made me hotwire the Marshall amps with KT88 valves. I needed a more powerful sound. John Bonham's drum kits were expanding, getting more resonant, and louder, so the amplifiers got bigger, too.

Guide to One Bedroom Apartments in Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City (OKC) is quickly becoming one of the most desirable cities for people seeking a vibrant urban lifestyle with a touch of Southern charm. With its dynamic economy, booming arts scene, and abundant outdoor activities, OKC is an exciting place to live. Whether you’re relocating for work, school, or simply a fresh start, one of the best housing options in OKC is a one-bedroom apartment.
In this blog post, we will explore the many benefits of choosing a one-bedroom apartment in Oklahoma City, what to look for when renting, and the top neighborhoods to consider. We’ll also provide some practical tips for making the most of your new space.
Why Choose a One Bedroom Apartment in Oklahoma City?
1. Affordability and Budget-Friendly Living
Oklahoma City has an affordable cost of living, and one-bedroom apartments are particularly budget-friendly compared to cities like New York, San Francisco, or Chicago. In OKC, you’ll find a wide variety of one-bedroom apartment options that offer excellent value, whether you’re on a tight budget or simply want to keep your living expenses lower without sacrificing comfort or style.
Not only is rent more affordable, but utility costs are often lower in one-bedroom apartments since you're only heating or cooling one space, as opposed to a larger unit. This makes it an appealing choice for young professionals, students, and even retirees looking to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle at an affordable price.
2. Perfect for Singles, Couples, or Professionals
One-bedroom apartments are designed to accommodate a variety of lifestyles. They’re perfect for singles who don’t need too much space and prefer a cozy environment, as well as couples who don’t require a large home but want a private retreat in a central location. For professionals working in downtown OKC, a one-bedroom apartment can be the ideal setup for enjoying both comfort and convenience, especially if you want to be close to work or entertainment options.
With more people working from home, one-bedroom apartments are also a great choice for those who need a quiet space to focus but don’t want the maintenance of a larger home. The compact, functional design allows you to make the most of your living space, giving you both a cozy home and an efficient workspace.
3. Variety of Neighborhoods to Choose From
Oklahoma City offers a wide range of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. Whether you’re interested in living near the hustle and bustle of downtown, prefer a quiet suburban area, or want to be surrounded by culture and the arts, OKC has something to offer everyone. One-bedroom apartments are available in most of the city’s prime areas, making it easy to find a place that suits your lifestyle.
Best Neighborhoods for One Bedroom Apartments in Oklahoma City
1. Downtown OKC
If you’re looking to live at the heart of Oklahoma City, then a one-bedroom apartment in downtown OKC is the way to go. This area offers a mix of modern apartment complexes, high-rise buildings, and historic lofts. Living in downtown puts you within walking distance of some of the city’s best restaurants, entertainment venues, shopping centers, and cultural attractions like the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum and the Scissortail Park.
Downtown is ideal for professionals who work in the city center or those who want to be close to the action. With a variety of dining, nightlife, and recreational activities, you’ll never run out of things to do. Plus, public transportation options make commuting easy if you work outside the downtown area.
2. Bricktown
Known for its vibrant nightlife, sports venues, and entertainment, Bricktown is another fantastic neighborhood for one-bedroom apartments. This district features stylish lofts, modern condos, and historic buildings that have been converted into residential units. The area is known for its canal, which offers boat tours and connects to numerous restaurants and bars.
If you’re someone who enjoys living in a bustling, urban area with a variety of entertainment options nearby, Bricktown is the place for you. The neighborhood is home to popular spots like the Chesapeake Energy Arena and the Cox Convention Center, which hosts events and concerts throughout the year. A one-bedroom apartment here provides the perfect balance of excitement and convenience.
3. The Plaza District
If you're a fan of art, culture, and a more eclectic vibe, the Plaza District is an ideal neighborhood for you. Known for its local galleries, art shops, and trendy cafes, the Plaza District is a creative and artistic area perfect for young professionals or those who love being part of an active, creative community.
The neighborhood is also home to a variety of locally owned shops, food trucks, and coffee shops, providing a quirky, independent feel. If you want a one-bedroom apartment in a community that is both creative and laid-back, the Plaza District should be at the top of your list.
4. Nichols Hills
For those looking for a more suburban feel without sacrificing access to city amenities, Nichols Hills offers a quieter, upscale living experience. This affluent neighborhood is known for its tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and spacious homes. While it’s a predominantly residential area, there are also boutique shops and local dining options to explore.
One-bedroom apartments in Nichols Hills are typically located in smaller, more intimate buildings or townhouse-style units. This neighborhood is perfect for individuals or couples who want to enjoy peaceful surroundings while still being within a short drive of downtown OKC.
What to Look for When Renting a One Bedroom Apartment in OKC
1. Size and Layout
One-bedroom apartments in OKC come in a variety of sizes and layouts. Some may be compact with just the basics, while others may feature larger living rooms, separate kitchens, and additional storage space. It’s important to assess your needs before renting to make sure the apartment will suit your lifestyle.
For example, if you plan on working from home, look for an apartment with a designated office nook or extra space to set up your home office. If you love to entertain, choose a place with an open floor plan that allows for easy flow between the living room and kitchen.
2. Location and Proximity to Amenities
Consider your lifestyle and what amenities are important to you when choosing a location. Do you want to be near public transportation, grocery stores, or recreational areas? If you enjoy outdoor activities, living near a park or trail could be a great choice. If nightlife and dining are more important, downtown or Bricktown would be ideal.
3. Rent and Utilities
Make sure to set a budget before beginning your apartment search. One-bedroom apartments in Oklahoma City offer a variety of price ranges depending on location, size, and amenities. Additionally, be sure to ask about what’s included in the rent. Some apartments may include utilities, while others may charge them separately. Be sure to factor in any additional costs when determining your monthly budget.
Tips for Making the Most of Your One Bedroom Apartment
Living in a smaller space means you'll need to be creative with your layout and storage. Here are some tips to maximize your one-bedroom apartment:
Use Multi-Functional Furniture: Invest in furniture that can serve multiple purposes, like a sofa bed or a dining table that doubles as a workspace.
Declutter Regularly: Keep only the essentials and minimize clutter to make your apartment feel more spacious.
Vertical Storage: Make use of your walls by adding shelves or hooks to store things off the floor and free up space.
Create Zones: Use rugs or room dividers to define different areas within the apartment, like a living area, dining space, and office nook.
Conclusion
A one-bedroom apartment in Oklahoma City is an excellent choice for individuals, couples, or young professionals looking for a comfortable, affordable, and well-located place to call home. With a variety of neighborhoods to choose from, you can find the perfect apartment to fit your lifestyle. Whether you're drawn to the energy of downtown, the creativity of the Plaza District, or the tranquility of Nichols Hills, OKC has a one-bedroom apartment that meets your needs.
By following the tips above and carefully considering your budget and preferences, you can find a beautiful and functional one-bedroom apartment that fits perfectly into your OKC living experience

Tulsa’s culinary scene is blossoming with farm-to-table restaurants, and its vibrant downtown area is home to local shops, cafes, and live music venues.
6. Sedona, Arizona
While the Grand Canyon draws in millions of tourists each year, nearby Sedona is an equally stunning yet quieter alternative. ECP0895 Cyclone Party 061210 Tape #2 part 2, Music by the Bonfire
Ear Candle Productions captured a party at the Cyclone Warehouse, a legendary venue on Illinois St. in San Francisco, part of a group of converted art spaces that also included the Lost Door. On June 12, 2010, the Conspiracy Of Beards and their friends threw a great party with many guest artists, and our camera was there to capture it.
In the second part of Tape 2, we join a crowd of fun, talented, well-refreshed characters singing and playing outdoors on Illinois St. by a small bonfire. Davis Jones has the camera and joins in the fun.
1. An ad hoc folk jam with various singers and players, soon joined by Tim White, who brought his bass clarinet and is in the mood to skronk.
2. Tin Sandwich, a harmonica trio who blow through their repertoire and are joined by a couple of members of the Conspiracy Of Beards for an impromptu version of Stories Of The Street.
3. The Conspiracy Of Beards, having just sung a "proper" set indoors, runs through some more songs in a loose, informal, joyful mode. The camera is right there in the circle of singers and you get the feeling of what it's like to be one of the Beards.
Ear Candle Productions is a small music label, video production, and eLearning website designed to be a place for the arts to stay and to be a venue for the creative products of the owners, John Bassham (AKA J Neo Marvin) and Debra Nicholson Bassham (AKA Davis Jones). We live in San Francisco. Come visit our website and check out our YT, Bandcamp, Ear Candle Radio, and other pages at https://earcandleproductions.com

" Some people will do anything to be famous. And then there are other people who just - will sing," Lisa Fischer said in the Academy Award-winning documentary, "20 Feet from Stardom." "It's not about anything except being in this special space with people and that is really the higher - calling, to me." My friend, the legendary backup singer Lisa Fischer, has supported the world’s biggest stars, including Luther Vandross, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Tina Turner, and Sting. Lisa captured my heart on my first Luther tour, "Never Let Me Go," in 1993. She was so friendly, funny, and approachable. During that tour, she enthralled audiences with the performance of her signature song, "How Can I Ease The Pain." Over the years, I have seen her mold, caress, undress, and shape this song on many stages. The melody and lyrics are so beautiful that Lisa finds something new to bring to the song for each listen.
After the "Never Let Me Go" tour, she left to tour with the Rolling Stones, but our paths continued to cross in the most unexpected places.
I met Lisa Fischer while working in the American Conservatory Theater's costume rentals department in San Francisco, CA. She came into our shop looking for a Halloween costume.
The next time we saw each other was in Europe. I took a brief hiatus from working with Luther Vandross to tour with Lionel Richie, who was opening for Tina Turner. Navigating the backstage area on the rolling hills of some outdoor venue, I spotted Lisa taking a break after a sound check.
After Luther Vandross's stroke related to mismanagement of type 2 diabetes, Lisa would visit his rehabilitation center to sing with Luther as part of his occupational therapy. At my urging, she also agreed with Nat Adderley Jr. to perform a Christmas concert for the residents of Whispering Knoll. She dressed to the nines, and Nat accompanied her on a piano, singing traditional Christmas tunes in the main lobby. I remember several residents telling me that it was the best talent that had ever performed there!
Of course, I, like everyone else, was thrilled that the enormous popularity of "20 Feet From Stardom" sparked Lisa's solo tour. Her live performances are electric. Last year, she performed the most incredible sonic rendition of 'Never Too Much" during her show. She's so captivating on stage that she easily erases my corny 6th-grade chorus memories of a song like "This Land Is Your Land" and turns it into a haunting, spiritual experience.
She generously shared her talents with me recently on a holiday song collaboration. Our Zoom and phone sessions are a masterclass in songwriting. As a lyricist, I am grateful to her for opening my eyes to how a true artist interprets lyrics. It's been an incredible experience.
“This would be scary if I felt like the real focus were on me per se, but in my head, in order to deal with it, it’s the music that’s really being presented; it is about the music flying. Not so much me,” she says.
