Madagascar in Nickelodeon Magazine (part 1 of 4)
Madagascar was first featured in Nick Mag in the June/July 2005 issue, shortly after the film's May 2005 release.
Tumblr media
Here we have the cover of the magazine, featuring Alex, Gloria and the Penguins
Tumblr media
Next we have an ad for the tie-in video game
Tumblr media
Finally we have a two-page spread featuring an interview with the main cast. Full transcription of the interview under the read more!
We talked to the stars of the new animated movie Madagascar. The film is about some animals from New York City's Central Park Zoo who suddenly find themselves stranded in the wilds of Madagascar, an island of the coast of southern Africa.
On-screen best friends and real-life pals Ben Stiller (near right, who plays Alex the lion) and Chris Rock (far right, who plays Marty the zebra) talked to us about their characters.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? Ben Stiller: Alex is sort of the king of the Central Park Zoo. He enjoys being the main attraction and would be happy for things to always stay the same. Chris Rock: Marty is the adventurer of the group. He's not content in the zoo. He's the guy who asks, "What more could we be doing with ourselves?"
Nick Mag: Are you at all like your character? Ben: A little bit. [Like Alex,] I'm a New Yorker and a creature of habit. I like the comforts of home. And Alex is sort of an actor. He's a performer who has the self-delusional, self-involved thing that I think every actor can identify with. Chris: [Like Marty,] I always wanted to get away from where I grew up.
Nick Mag: What was the hardest thing about recording your lines? Ben: The time frame was crazy. It was like, "Wow, we're still doing this? They were serious about [this taking] four years?" At one point, I felt like all I ever said was "Marty!" Literally, for years. Chris: "Am I white with black stripes or black with white stripes?" How many times did I say that?
Nick Mag: Do you ever feel caged up, like you're in a zoo? Ben: Sometimes, when you're not happy on a movie set, it can be like that. Chris: Yeah, movies can be like that. Ben: I remember doing a movie once where, on the first day of rehearsals, I realized, "Uh-oh, this is not good." And I had four months to go.
Nick Mag: Did you do research for your role? Ben: I ate a bowl of Frosted Flakes because of Tony the Tiger, and then I realized I was playing a lion and that I was really off.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? Ben: I'm a big M&M's guy—peanut or plain. Chris: Popcorn and Raisinettes, but I wish they served banana cream pie!
We got the skinny on Jada Pinkett Smith's big character, Gloria the hippo.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? Jada Pinkett Smith: She's like the mother of the gang. She wants to make sure that everybody is happy and taken care of.
Nick Mag: Are you anything like her? Jada: I have a real loyalty to my friends, just like Gloria does.
Nick Mag: Was the recording process hard? Jada: It was pretty challenging. You have to be really patient. You don't have the other actors there, there are no props, and you don't know what the scene looks like. It's just you and some paper with words on it.
Nick Mag: Do you have any pets? Jada: I have three dogs and a cat. And I'm about to get three more dogs!
Nick Mag: Do you like the outdoors? Jada: You have to be very cautious, but I love the wild. My intention for the next couple of years is to do more camping and go whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon.
Nick Mag: Are you freaked out by nature at all? Jada: Not at all. Insects are the only things that kind of freak me out, but I can get used to them.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? Jada: I usually do a mixture of popcorn and Goobers. Now I want some!
David Schwimmer talked to us about his character, Melman the giraffe.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? David Schwimmer: Melman is a hypochondriac. he's afraid of almost everything and needs a lot of attention.
Nick Mag: Are you at all like him? David: I'm the opposite. My character couldn't be happier having bars around him so that nothing can get in. Personally, I'd go crazy. I'm low maintenance. I like not having a routine. Also [unlike Melman], I have to be forced to go to the doctor.
Nick Mag: What other kind of animal would you like to play? David: A black panther. There's something powerful and mysterious about it. It's got those green eyes and the sleek black coat. It would also be fun to be a water creature, like a dolphin. [Zelda the roving reporter: You're already a good Schwimmer.]
Nick Mag: Do you ever feel like you're in a zoo? David: I waited tables for seven years at restaurants where I felt like that. I also had a crummy job working in a tiny room in the business center of a hotel in Chicago in a suit and tie from six AM to six PM.
Nick Mag: Do you have any pets? David: I don't. I travel too much. But I had many animals growing up—dogs, a lizard, turtles. I love turtles. Their only protection is hiding—I love that about turtles.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? David: There's no substitute for good, fresh popcorn.

Been working on this for a long long time and I finally reached a point that I'm happy with it. I hope Simmers who are also big Nintendo fans like this.
Shout-out to @tomatomagica/@sims4niya for helping me out with making certain goals and just looking over the rules in general. :)
UPDATE: Slightly changed the goals in Gen 8, please reblog this version.
General Rules:
No cheats unless otherwise stated in generation rules, needed to reset a sim, or for decoration/building purposes.
Mods are okay, provided they do not give you an unfair advantage. What constitutes an unfair advantage is up to you.
Complete each generation's Aspiration
Above all, have fun. If that means continuing onto the next generation without finishing all of the previous gen goals, that’s okay.
(Generations beyond the cut)
Generation 1 Animal Crossing:
Traits: Loves Outdoors/Outgoing/Maker
Aspiration: Curator
You have moved into a new town with nothing but the clothes on your back. Well at least Mr. Nook was nice enough to give you a new home even with the work you'll have to do to pay him off. It’ll be tough but you’ve quite the knack for building and your neighbors seem more than happy to cheer you on.
Move into an empty lot and build a small house. (Optional: Make your house a Tiny Home Residential lot and choose what tier to work with from there.)
After one day, move two single townie sims into your neighborhood and become friends with them (If one of them becomes your founder’s spouse, make a new neighbor to move into their old house.)
Neither the founder nor spouse will hold a job, they will make money via at home activities like painting, fishing, etc.
Have a room to display your collections
At the end of every sim week, use cheats or mods to remove half of your household funds (to pay off your debt to Mr. Nook) until both your sim and their spouse reach the adult stage.
~~~
Generation 2 Splatoon:
Traits: Creative/Dance Machine/Party Animal
Aspiration: Famous Celebrity
Despite your humble beginnings, you always dreamed big. You were often found drawing outfits from fashion magazines or singing along to your favorite pop idols or doing cool poses for selfies at the pool. Once you became a teen, you started taking little steps to join that glamorous world.
Become a simfluencer as a teen
Move to San Myshuno or Del Sol Valley once you become a Young Adult
Reach the top of the Style Influencer career (Trendsetter branch)
Host a party once every sim week
Either become or marry a merperson. Heir however must be just a sim.
Max out painting, dancing, and singing skills
~~~
Generation 3 Legend of Zelda:
Traits: Good/Adventurous/Music Lover
Aspiration: Jungle Explorer
Everyone expected you to become a spoiled brat but thankfully you turned out to be a good kid with a love for music and a dream of exploring far-off ancient ruins. You make a friend who supports you all the way but you also make an enemy constantly getting in your way.
Make a friend as a child or teen, become BFFs with them, and stay that way for as long as either sim lives (friend can be a future spouse)
As a child or teen become enemies with one sim and stay enemies for as long as either sim lives. Win at least five fights with them. (Optional: Have this sim be an evil sim)
Max out the Archaeology skill and one instrument skill
Complete the Ancient Omiscan Artifacts Collection
Get the “Brave” reward trait
~~~
Generation 4 Earthbound:
Traits: Goofball/Active/Geek
Aspiration: Friend of the World
Because of your parent’s travels, you never lived in one spot for too long. Despite that, you still liked making new friends and finding ways to keep in touch. And you learned to appreciate the magic in every world… figurative and literal.
Live in four different worlds before becoming a young adult
Make three friends and create a club with them (Optional: Make these friends as a child and grow up together)
Max out photography and comedy skills
Become a spellcaster as a teen and work on reaching the top rank
Complete the Postcard Collection
Adopt a dog when your first kid becomes a child
~~~
Generation 5 Pokemon:
Traits: Dog (or Cat) Lover (Animal Enthusiast)/Vegetarian/Socially Awkward
Aspiration: Friend of the Animals or Country Caretaker
Ever since you were little, you were obsessed with animals and even got along better with them than people. Your friends blame your childhood obsession with Voidcritters (even if some of them weren't really animals). When you grew up, you knew you were going to surround yourself with animals.
Complete the Voidcritters Collection
Adopt at least eight pets over your lifetime including at least one stray.
Have both cats and dogs
Open a Vet Clinic (pokemon center) and get it to five stars
Max out Veterinary and pet training skills
OR
Complete Voidcritters Collection
Adopt a fox or raccoon
Have at least one of each farm animal (chickens, cow, and llamas)
Win first place in each animal fair in Henford-On-Bagley
Learn all the animal treat recipes
~~~
Generation 6 Mario:
Heir 1 Traits: Family Oriented/Bro/Loyal
Heir 2 Traits: Squeamish/Clumsy/Bro
Heir 1 Aspiration: Nerd Brain
Heir 2 Aspiration: Mansion Baron
You and your sibling were as thick as thieves growing up and neither of you really liked the idea of one of you moving away so they stuck around. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have their own adventures.
Chose two siblings to serve as Double Heirs, they do not need to be twins
Both heirs take a part time job as Manual Laborers until one of them gets married then the married one joins the Doctor career
The other heir maxes out the Medium skill and becomes a Paranormal Investigator
Both heirs max out Handiness skill
One heir unlocks Sylvan Glade and the other unlocks Forgotten Grotto
~~~
Generation 7 Kirby:
Traits: Foodie (or Glutton)/Cheerful/Childish
Aspiration: Renaissance Sim
You grew up in a very supportive environment with family members encouraging you to try a little bit of everything. You liked helping your family cook but you also discovered a love for acting from trying so many different hats. At that point, you decided that you were gonna be a superstar!
Join Drama Club as a child or teen
Max out the Cooking, Gourmet Cooking, and acting skills
Reach the top of the Actor career
Reach pristine public image
Gain the People Person lifestyle
Once you become an elder, retire from acting and open a business selling cooked meals.
~~~
Generation 8 Metroid:
Traits: Loner/Unflirty/Noncommittal
Aspiration: Strangerville Mystery
While your parent enjoyed the spotlight, you preferred to keep to yourself with exercising and star gazing. As soon as you were able to, you moved out into your own place in a quiet out of the way town called Strangerville. However it seems your wish for a normal quiet life wasn’t meant to be.
Max out body and wellness skills
Reach the sixth level of the Astronaut career and quit after one shift.
Only take odd jobs after quitting your career
Have an alien child (feel free to cheat/mod to get an abduction or to get a female sim alien pregnant)
Gain the Techie lifestyle
Never marry
~~~
Generation 9 Pikmin:
Traits: Hot headed/Overachiever/Genius
Aspiration: Freelance Botanist
Despite your alien heritage, you adored the world you grew up in but that isn’t to say you had no interest in the stars. You enjoyed helping out at the school greenhouse along with watching for comets and UFOs on weekends. It didn’t take long before you started to wonder if there was a way to combine your love for both worlds.
Join Scouts as a child
Master gardening and rocket science skills
Visit Sixam and befriend three different colored aliens
Complete the Geode and Space rock collections
Find all three alien plants on Sixam and plant them in your garden (Do NOT buy them in Henford-On-Bagley)
~~~
Generation 10 Fire Emblem:
Traits: Bookworm/Proper/Ambitious
Aspiration: Leader of the Pack
Growing up, you admired stories of brave knights and kind heroes. While you eventually outgrew the fairy tales, you still wanted to help people like the brave hero kings and queens in the stories.Thus together with your closest friends, you decide to try to make a positive difference in the world.
If a sim dies, you cannot plead with the Grim Reaper nor can you resurrect them in any way
Max out Charisma, writing, and research & debate skills
Both were artists on Skyrim and shared an office together. They were very very close.
-Tuesday, February 14, 2012
I first met Adam when I started working at a tiny game development studio in Boulder, Colorado back in 1998 called Devil’s Thumb Entertainment. I walked into the studio on my first day of work and I’m pretty sure The Cramps were playing full blast from his general direction. There he was, sun baked and surrounded with what at the time I assumed were rare Jaimie Hewlett sketches pasted up around him, loads of cds and flyers for rockabilly rollerderby raver chicks with squids on their heads. ‘Welcome to the monster factory!’ he said and I thought instantly ‘Oh hell yeah! I came to the right place!’ It didn’t take long to figure out that what I thought were Jaimie Hewlett drawings were actually his and to be quite honest were 10 times more appealing and hilarious. (No offense Jaimie!)
When I finally got the chance to see his apartment in Denver I realized I was stepping into the mind of a creative genius. His entire apartment from floor to ceiling, front to back was covered with his paintings, massive cardboard sculptural cat like gargoyles, christmas lights, intricate costumes (designed with little more than a leather jacket, cheap sombrero, toys from a thrift shop, black and silver spray paint and hot glue) flyers for previous rent parties from his old warehouse, Tank Girl comics, Low Rider and American Artist magazines, Thomas Pynchon novels and a constant stream of music. Every square inch was interesting and VITAL and ALIVE. This was an intellect far beyond anyone else I’d ever met and there was not a single hint of pretentiousness to him. His entire life was a beautifully structured and disciplined chaos. Even then I began to see that not only was I in the presence of greatness, I was in the presence of one of the more important illustrators of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He just didn’t know it yet and neither did anyone else. Quite frankly he wouldn’t give a shit if someone gave him that label. He simply wanted to come up with more ideas and get better at drawing. Period.
Since then we got into many beer soaked adventures that sometimes included late night bike rides through the city streets of Denver with a boom-box strapped to the back blasting Big Audio Dynamite with sparklers hanging off the handlebars(and some stiches on the scalp of yours truly). Dangerously drunken skateboarding with cap guns, ditching psychedelic parties to go laugh our asses off and throw giant rocks in a frozen river, concerts, weekend long patio surfing tours in the Colorado summers, trips to the reservoir to float around wearing finely crafted and thrilling 12pack headgear, lunchtime bike rides up to our favorite outdoor patio Rhumba in Boulder for $2 Red Stripes and then back to work again, and many hours working close to him and learning as much as I could about being an artist and a better human being. He once said to me “I may not be Mozart, but at least I can try to be the Pixies.” He just wanted to entertain people in any way he could.
In his last few days we spent together in the hospital we sat on his hospital bed listening to music for hours, talking, and drawing in our sketchbooks. Our conversations were tinted with what was happening for him in the moment certainly, but mostly we talked about friends, art, music, and life. We spoke without much nostalgia or finality, just very real and present and forward looking despite the circumstances. He kept drawing until he couldn't possibly draw anymore, squeezing every last ounce he could out of life, just as he always had.
Watch papa go to work.
I love you Adam. You continue to be my friend, mentor, and greatest inspiration
December 29th 1914 saw the birth of a Scottish legend, Tom Weir
Tom was born in Springburn, Glasgow the son of a locomotive engineer fitter, he belonged to the first generation of working-class outdoor men and began his career tramping the hills near the city whenever he could escape from the grocers shop where he worked.
The adventurer, is credited as introducing thousands of people to Scotland’s great outdoors through his tales of climbing, walking, nature conservation and campaigning. Tom is also fondly remembered for his long-running STV series, Weir’s Way, and his Scots Magazine column, which he wrote for 50 years.
Tom Weir was a writer, broadcaster, hill-walker, rock-climber, historian, naturalist and explorer. He was a popular sight traipsing across the Scottish countryside in his red bobble hat and Fair Isle jumpers since the 1930s.
There's probably not a single glen or mountain that he hadn't visited. Tom didn't just climb in Scotland, in 1950 he was a member of the first post-war Himalayan expedition and in 1952 was one of the first mountaineers to explore the hitherto closed ranges of Nepal, east of Katmandu.
His travels took him to the High Artic of East Greenland, the peaks of Northern Norway, the High Atlas of Morocco and the troubled frontier of the Iran, Syrian and Turkish Mountain lands known as Kurdistan.
He was the best of Scots and represented all that is good in our Nation. He spread enlightenment and joy wherever he went and will live on in our memories.
To this day the legend lives on with his statue at Balmaha on the shores of Loch Lomond, who hasn't visited and not had their photo taken beside it? Well me and ma wee Sis have, as seen in the pic.
Tom Weir passed away at the grand age of 91, on July 6th 2006, he was buried at in Kilmaronock Parish Church, near Drymen. He was buried in the same plot as the ashes of his big sister the actress Molly Weir.
Tintin, and his time spent as a scout; a sister piece to this bullet essay that I wrote some time back | Jo presenting their other story called Tintin and the Cockchafers.
Tw/Cw: Bullying, Racism and Entomophobia trigger
Okay, a bit of background on the subject matter first; before Hergé created The Adventures of Tintin, he first wrote and illustrated a comic strip for the scout magazine Le Boy Scout Belge called The Adventures of Totor, Chief Scout of the Cockchafers, which ran from July 1926 to the summer of 1929.
Also, for those of you who are curious in what the hell a cockchafer is, it’s this absolute darling of a bug right here:
Tumblr media
Cute, right? Cockchafers are a type of scarab beetle; they also go by the name May/June bug since they’re a prevalent summertime insect.
Returning back to our main topic, the strip followed Totor― a Belgian boy scout who travelled to visit his aunt and uncle in the US; upon arriving to, he encounters hostile Native American tribes and gangsters, whom he outwits before eventually heading back to Belgium.
If you haven’t noticed it already, the plot’s very much like that of Tintin in America which was published later in 1931.
Totor served as Tintin’s sort of prototype, if you will.
Tumblr media
Hergé himself did state that he wanted Tintin to possess the traits of a boy scout since he loved and supported the movement― it’s also sort of known that he himself was a scout in his youth as well.
With all this to bear in mind, this leads to me just diving head first into headcanon category; me and a mutual have this shared headcanon that Tintin participated in the scouts as a kid.
This is also, sort of going to be like an intro post to my other story, Tintin and the Cockchafers; some world-building stuff and the likes will be mentioned in here.
I really liked Hergé's boy scout premise for Totor and was inspired to write a story about it (minus all the racism of course).
I like to imagine that the troop Tintin’s a part of, their ranking system is based off of different kinds of bugs and currently he’s a cockchafer; hence the story’s title.
I plan for this to be the typical coming-of-age story about Tintin going on a camping/hiking trip with the scouts.
This aforementioned trip takes place on the summer of the year he’s decided to run away from the orphanage that housed him, drop out of school, and pursue being a reporter full-time, shortly after he was promoted to it from being a paperboy.
The events of the trip were what finally pushed him to skedaddle out of there and live.
And boy did he make the right decision in doing so.
Tintin joins the scouts at around age 10 and stayed as an active member up until he was 14 (his age in Cockchafers).
While he is no longer a scout in uniform, he’s most definitely still a scout in action and in spirit, as you can see with his resourcefulness that permeates all throughout the comics.
Tumblr media
I like to imagine that one of the reasons why he took the job as a paperboy was to save up enough money to buy materials for the uniform (e.g. fabric, buttons, elastics, etc.); since the official ones from the store were too expensive.
Mrs. Murphy, (this sort of hermit-librarian OC of mine from the oneshot I wrote back in March 2024; which I have a whole ‘nother series and set of headcanons just for her if you're interested) offered to tailor one for him since she's taken an interest in sewing lately— the rest of the materials he couldn't buy was bought by her out of pocket, (like the official pins/badges).
Tin’s obviously stoked since he’ll go out venturing into the great outdoors; sleeping under the stars and being ‘one with nature’ all that jazz.
He’s been cooped up for too long in that orphanage and feels oppressed whenever he’s at school by the other kids and adults…
The older boy scouts bully him for two reasons; first reason for being a quote/unquote pansy —the second reason is because of him surpassing them in almost every single one of the scout activities lol
They're sour because someone significantly smaller and younger than them is quicker and better at first aid/setting up tents/making a fire/tying knots and other typical camp activities of the like than all of them combined.
I have a gut feeling that Tintin would manage to snag all the boy scout badges in like, give or take, a day — the kid's a walking Swiss army knife for crying out loud! (Carrying and making good use these skills up into adulthood).
And he doesn't even mean to outdo them, he's just that more efficient at doing these kinds of things since he does them a lot during his free time.
Especially in knot tying— have you seen this kid tie up crooks with anything that remotely resembles a chord???
Tumblr media
And how do you think he's able to sneak in and out of the orphanage without getting caught? By making a rope via tying his blankets and bedsheets together of course!
This leads to my other headcanon that after he mastered knot tying, it segued into him getting into fibre arts like macramé and crochet which he does with the girl scouts.
I just know that once he's manage to collect all the boy scout badges, he'll try to collect all the girl scout badges next.
The older girl scouts love him; they see him as a little brother figure and honourary member which is the sweetest thing.
He and his scoutmaster (I won't introduce him just yet because of spoiler reasons) are pretty close, with him trying his best to look out for Tintin, since he knows that the kid is being bullied but won't say a word about who's been doing it to him.
Throughout the trip he tries to figure it out. (He does eventually guys, dw)
The other boys mistake their connection for... something else... and think that Tintin's leeching off their scoutmaster to get extra merits which made their harassment more vicious.
The insults they throw being laced with more venom; them tripping him up and shoving past him are done with increasing aggression each time, etc.
There's this one scene I have planned where they knock him unconscious and tie him to a tree.
