Was suddenly overcome by nostalgia and in a frenzy wrote my own english lyrics for Sakura Kiss (Ouran HSHC) just now while in the shower MFNSMND it was fun and I'm actually p proud of these... Sharing in case anyone wants to do a cover w these lyrics!!🥹 (pls credit and show me if u do🥺)

I also did a v quick recording (v out of breath😵‍💫) to show how the lyrics match up w the song 🫣 LMAO (i dropped my phone in the beginning KFJSJ)

I’m not sure if anyone cares but I’ve just caught up with the latest episodes of My Adventures with Superman and I wanna talk about it! Hopefully without spoilers.

So I’ll be honest, the first episode was fairly off putting. I thought everything was over the top and didn’t like the relationship dynamics set up of the main three. I wasn’t sure how the relationships were going to develop but I was willing to give it a chance!

Thank goodness I did because wow! The most recent couple of episodes (I think episode 8 is the most recent as of this post. I’m geeking at the episode title and hope the Ouran HSHC reference is intentional) really showed that they want to do something and I’m here. For. It. I’m so glad they addressed my issue with the trio dynamic (at least it’s a start to addressing) and that the show is smarter than I initially gave it credit.

thots on utena season 1

the last anime i watched was yuri on ice when it came out, and before that ouran hshc in... 2015? so i’m really not used to anime tropes. all that to say going from “haha saionji switch personality w a monkey” to “saionji gets expelled for stabbing a guy” in two episodes was Not what i was expecting.

i really like the puppet theatre segment—i always pause and figure out what it has to do with the plot before i move on. UFOs are a symbol for anthy’s brother/the prince. the william tell one was poignant—cycles can’t last forever, loved ones can be abusers.

speaking of anthy’s brother/the prince i really thought they were going to be one and the same. the only spoilers i got were thru this triggers list, so i knew the brother existed. given the unreality of the show i’m not putting this theory away yet.

i love the songs that play during the duels—they add to the drama/esoteric stuff when it seems like it’s just a shoujo episode. hard to pay attention to two sets of subtitles as well as the action, though. i get some of the symbolism—the song with geological eras is about utena not yet being grown into herself; miki sees the world through the past/theatre—but the references are crazy. gyges? i may be a classicist but i had to google that one.

the shot of utena and touga’s shadows with his sword going through her head blew me away. the angular style was amazing. i wonder if there was a similar thing going on with the tin can telephone across jury’s head. it’s a symbol of emotional/mental manipulation.

i really can’t get over all the slapping, especially of anthy. like i wanted to like jury but the moment she did that... even wakaba and utena slapping each other was rough. 

i love that they use the shoujo genre and conventions to tell such a deep and disturbing story. take teenage girls’ media seriously, you know? and it’s relieving to see the hot older guy trope subverted because all of them are scary and not actual love interests. interesting that we, the audience, can tell (touga looks nothing like the prince etc.) while utena can’t. the rest of the show seems to want to make us as confused as she is.

anthy being awful at cooking is such a good touch. i can’t wait to get to know more of her real personality. im glad that she and utena are undergoing simultaneous, but different arcs--utena didn’t realise how fake anthy’s personality was until she lost her, so now she can really get to know her. poor girl’s healing is going to take a long time, though. being ‘engaged’ to a nice person doesn’t meant the inherent abuse of being the rose bride stops. they need to reconnect as friends. i like that they’re so young at this point--they have the rest of their lives to figure each other out.

having characters who want to revolutionize the world while the setting is just one school is very good. i do want to know if there are actual reasons their world needs to be revolutionized, but for the time being it seems like utena, who doesn’t yet care about revolution, is the only one going against the system (of the faculty, the student council, whoever’s behind the whole rose thing, gender norms). 

jury could be seen as a revolutionary, too, given that she’s gay and therefore breaks the status quo, but i don’t think homophobia or whatever is her driving force. hers was the hardest episode to parse, actually. the “eternal thing” for saionji is love/loyalty, which touga pretends to embody; miki thinks he finds his “thing” in anthy, but it’s all in his head; but i don’t know what jury’s “miracle” is, or why her love interest told her to believe in them. side note: why do all the students mention utena’s “boy’s clothes” but not jury’s?

Ouran HSHC personality swap strain? Mikoto as Tamaki (his bro XD), Yata (the short one) as Honey, Fushimi (Yata's partner) as Mori, Kusanagi as Kyoya (the scheming one) and Anna (the princess) as Haruhi. Couldn't decide on which character to get the personalities of the twins so it's up to you whether or not you want to include them!

I’m just imaginingchaos everywhere, like Mikoto suddenly goes from barely talking tolong energetic speeches and emotional mood swings (imagine Annasaying something blunt to him and suddenly Mikoto is cultivatingmushrooms in a corner) and no one knows what’s going on with him atfirst. Meanwhile Yata’s suddenly extra energetic and his temper hasgone down a few levels, he is now pure sunshine child and just wantsto eat sweets and look cute. He also spends a lot of time beingcarried around by stoic silent Fushimi, who at first doesn’t seem tohave changed much since it’s not like he was ever very chatty exceptnow he’s also pretty gentle and doesn’t grimace and glare ateveryone. Kusanagi has become twice as shrewd, but on the bright sidehe’s still Mom like always (and now please imagine Mikoto referringto himself as ‘Dad’ and Kusanagi as 'Mom,’ later once the power wearsoff Mikoto’s pretty much done with people calling him 'Dad,’ thanks).Anna has become twice as blunt and suddenly is dressing moreandrogynous, she’s mostly being swept up in all the craziness aroundher and just letting it roll. For the twins…since we haven’t giventhem roles yet imagine Munakata and Totsuka, both of them beingmischievous together while also possibly hitting on each other andplotting elaborate pranks. Totsuka would be totally into that parttoo, Munakata fits into it way too well and the both of them togetherare a pair of holy terrors. The rest of the cast probably just triesto stay away from them all until the power wears off, it’s too muchcraziness even for the usually unflappable members of Scepter 4.
