Margins and Murmuration by Otter Lieffe
goodreads
Tumblr media
After the economic crises of the 2020s, a corner of Europe known only as the State has become a monoculture of gender, sexuality, ability and race. Forced to leave their home, Ash and Pinar, elder leaders of the Resistance, have made a new, quieter life in the forest.
But nothing lasts forever.
These best friends answer the calls of the past – and the future – to rejoin their community and face their oppressors head on. As a movement, they organise for dignity and self-determination. Together, they fight to survive.
Mod opinion: I hadn't heard of this book before, but I want to read it soooo bad now.

When he was with a client, he had to be careful not to use any of the forbidden words. Struggle, resist, rebel, queer—and a host of others—were considered too radical by the State and had been banned decades ago, replaced with more innocuous words such as 'to make effort ', 'to dispute' and 'to betray'. Queer, having passed through 'LGBTQIA+' at the turn of the century and 'Sexual and gender divergents' to decades later, now had no permissible equivalent that wasn't a slur. As the linguists working in the State knew very well, without a vocabulary to express it, there could be no concept. By banning the very idea of queerness, they hoped that the people themselves would also disappear.

so / sun / dim 15.12.19 16:00h queer trans feminist sunday afternoon with otter lieffe We invite you to spend a queer-trans feminist afternoon with us in the sp!t! The first part of the afternoon will be a writing workshop with Otter Lieffe: Writing from the Margins: Speculative Fiction as a Tool for Organising. This will be space for connecting with each other, writing and talking. There’s no pressure to present your work, you’re welcome to come to write just for yourself if you’d like to. The second part will be a reading with texts by Otter Lieffe, as well as a talk about Trans-Feminism International.
Otter has released two speculative fiction books during the last two years (Margins and Murmurations; 2017 and Conserve and Control; 2018). The books are about queer community, resistance and the environment. Trans and working-class experiences are the centre of her writing. In 2019, Otter founded Trans Feminism International a grassroots and community-driven organisation to support and empower trans women and trans-feminine people to change their own lives and to resist the vio- lence, discrimination, marginalisation and precarity they often face. During this afternoon we want to create a space where we feel safe enough to connect with each other and to share our experiences. Safety is co-cre- ated by all of us so please come to this event with respect and an open mind. The afternoon will be in english - Flüsterübersetzungen auf Deutsch werden nach Bedürfnis am Nachmittag organisiert. Entry: Selbsteinschätzung/donations

(I'm not sure if this is the type of question you usually get asked, sorry if it's not relevant!) My sister (who I'm very close with ❤️) just came out to me as (mtf) trans. I want to get her some awesome books for Christmas with transwomen characters because recently we were talking about how horrible the LGBTQ+ representation is in the books we've been reading. Do you have any suggestions for books with mtf trans characters, or can you steer me towards some authors? She likes sci fi/fantasy
These are a few books I found:
Fifth season by N. K. Jemisin - sci-fi fantasy with trans woman character,  Tonkee, that is a little in the background. There are also other queer people.
Margins and Murmurations by Otter Lieffe -   dystopian fiction.  The main character is Ash, “a trans woman and healer living in a corner of Europe controlled by a militarized state.” Ash and her BFF have escaped to the forest along with other trans folks, queers, and sex workers.
If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo - not a sci-fi or fantasy, but It’s about trans woman growing up.
Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone - an urban fantasy set in a Hawaii inspired setting (it’s a completely different world). The main character is a trans woman.
Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver - a dystopian urban fantasy novel with a trans woman as a protagonist.
Meanwhile, Elsewhere: Science Fiction and Fantasy from Transgender Writers by Cat Fitzpatrick
The Way of Thorn and Thunder, by Daniel Heath Justice -  The whole story is an allegory to colonization in the Americas, but it’s also an action-packed story that totally works on its own. It features, among others, Tarsa, a bisexual former warrior whose destiny to be a Wielder—a kind of healer/priestess/witch — and Denarra, a feisty trans woman traveler full of hilarious tall tales, getting shit done “by any means necessary.” If you’ve wondered what LOTR would be like if it were queer, trans, feminist, poly, and decolonizing, look no further.
“Thrall” by Barbara Ann Wright.
I also found a few sci-fi\fantasy writers that are trans women:
Dane Figueroa Edidi - trans women of color and a sci-fi fantasy writer.
Jan Morris
R.J. Eliason
Storm Constanine - not a trans writer, but has a lot of books with queer characters

A really cool novel around these themes is Conserve and Control by Otter Lieffe. (It's heavily based on criticising green & queer-friendly capitalism) Plz don't let your utopia look like this and be critical of it.
Not to be a bitter and cynical asshole, (which I probably am) but many solarpunk enthusiats scare me a lot. I'm sure that within 10 years capitalism will totally sell us a dream that looks like a solarpunk ideal while still destroying ecosystems & people, and I'm sure most of them will buy it.
I mean... I don't think most people realise how deep things need to change so that there is a chance of not destroying soon most of the liveable places remaining on this planet.

Conserve and Control by Otter Lieffe
goodreads
Tumblr media
Time has moved on and the City is no longer a place where queer folk live in fear or face expulsion. The forest, once burned to flush out resistance fighters, is now a protected nature reserve. In Espera, there are trans politicians and queer business leaders and the streets are lined with permaculture gardens. But the riches of a green lifestyle are not for everyone. Growing up in a poverty-stricken neighbourhood with his refugee family, Aq works as a security officer for the Union. He works too hard and sleeps too little. Until he meets Carl Kingson, a businessman made rich by conservation. As Aq quickly learns, Kingson has a fetish for servitude and if it involves money, so much the better. Outside the city, Teal, a trans woman, and Cyan, her non-binary research partner, find themselves on the front line as the forest is threatened yet again by a new wave of eco-developments. Teal dreams of the days of Ash and Pinar, the celebrated heroines of the Uprising, and wonders if the stories of Ash’s journeys through time might be more than just legend. But living in the shadow of the great reserve fence and its army of guards, Teal and Cyan are closer to resistance than they could possibly know.
Mod opinion: I unfortunately haven't gotten around to this book yet, but I really want to read it sometime soon! Trans dystopic specfic my beloved <3
