I was talking with @marciabrady the other night about ships and the aesthetics of our favorite couples, and it made me really want to do a break down of one of my obscure crossover OTPs:

Grimhilde/Cruella, a.k.a. EvilPuppies!

Because I feel like Grimhilde/Cruella, out of all my ships, looks the most like crack at first glance, but there is so much more to it than just sticking two random Disney Villains together.

So, first and foremost, I started shipping them because of Kingdom Keepers Book IV, Power Play:

Despite the fact that Frollo is on the cover of the book and was the heavily promoted new Overtaker before the release of the novel, the main villains of the novel are actually Grimhilde and Cruella. The premise is that after Maleficent and Chernabog were captured at the end of the previous book, the Disney Villains who are trying to take over the parks have had to take on new leadership to get Maleficent and Chernabog out of Imagineer-prison. Grimhilde is the next in the chain of command, so she's in charge and has Cruella De Vil as her companion who follows her everywhere. They are ALWAYS together in the book, and Cruella, naturally, has a very flirty and complimentary demeanor towards Grimhilde that the Queen naturally just adores. Their chemistry is great, and there is even one part where the main hero finds the two of them asleep together on an air mattress and a bundle of furs (it makes sense in context) and, well... yeah XD The novel really glued the two of them together in my head.

And that togetherness, as you can see above, blends over into the parks. Grimhilde and Cruella are the only two main Disney Villainesses who are out with some regularity as face characters in Disneyland. All of the villains in the Disney Parks have a familiarity with each other, and you can get similar gal pal dynamics with them and Maleficent (and Lady Tremaine) around Halloween time. However, because Grimhilde and Cruella are out together for so much of the year, they tend to carry the brunt of that sort of "evil besties" friendship, leading to cute photo op moments like this...

So Disney is already doing a lot of the leg work to make them come across as girlfriends and to give them chemistry and a ship dynamic. However, if that was all there was to it, I probably wouldn't love this ship as much as I do. I need that interesting and thought through layer of shipping, and thankfully, these two have it in spades.

So, despite being from different time periods and wildly different worlds, Grimhilde and Cruella are aristocrats through and through. Grimhilde is literally royalty, and Cruella an over-financed heiress to the remnants of England's aristocracy (and she's the head of a corporate fashion empire in the Glenn Close movies). The House of De Vil dates back to medieval times, and evidence of that extensive and wealthy history is littered all around Cruella's mansion.

Cruella is in essence, the remnants of an old world that no longer exists, one of royalty and station that Grimhilde herself was a part of, and though the times have changed, Cruella keeps that class and regality alive. In that way, I think it blends perfectly with her taking on a lover who is quite literally OF that time period, and it also helps tie Grimhilde in with the modern world, giving Grimhilde a sort of immortality and transcendence that I think she'd very much value with her desire to be eternally young and beautiful. And, along those same lines, they are both very strong examples of matriarchal authority and power with Cruella bemoaning the uselessness of men and the pitfalls of women losing themselves to marriage, whilst Grimhilde murdered her own husband in order to reign alone without a man over her. They fundamentally get the sort of twisted villainous feminism that they are peddling.

Next is the themes of beauty and glamor. These are two women who are fundamentally motivated by vanity - Cruella wants to design her original Dalmatian puppy coat and stun the art world with her ruthless originality whilst Grimhilde wants to kill her stepdaughter so that she can reign as the Fairest One of All. For them, beauty and aesthetics are absolute, and they share a willingness to buy their glamorous ambitions with the blood of the innocent. They would fundamentally GET each other in that regard. However, and this is important, they GET that same motivation for vanity, but they don't COMPETE with each other. Cruella is a pretty woman, but she's older and she's a chain smoker whose habits have caused her to become a bit emaciated. She's beautiful in her own way, but she's never going to rival Grimhilde as the Fairest One of All. Likewise, though Grimhilde has extravagant fashions and jewelry, she's not setting out to be at the forefront of clothing design and art. She would certainly WEAR outfits Cruella designed for her, but she wouldn't want to supplant Cruella either. They're going to make the world kneel before their beauty, but they're going to compliment each other rather than rival each other or have to set aside their vanities for each other.

Then one of the big important elements that makes this ship appeal to me so much is the motif of DUALITY. Cruella is noteworthy for her hair that is half-black and half-white. It's her signature style, she's well known for it, it ties in with the black and white dogs, and it ties in with how she has her likable and admirable public face but also her sinister and dark side that the rest of the world doesn't see. Grimhilde also has the duality motif. Hell, she has BLACK HAIR as the Queen and WHITE hair as the hag, and the whole black and white motif shows up in her potions ("Black of Night" and "To Whiten My Hair, a Scream of Fright"). Grimhilde literally has two faces and two forms. She is two villainesses in one, which is such a tasty match for the woman with infamously two-toned hair. And what I like about that too is that Cruella BLENDS with both the Queen and the Hag. With the queen, she has the aristocratic and blue blood regality and beauty that I mentioned before, but with the hag, she has the cackling maniacal bloodthirsty side that would have an absolute riot bringing death to innocents. It's so symbolic, and they're the only Disney villains who have that duality motif in that fashion.

And the fact that they have all of these interesting parallels and motifs while also being from two different worlds and two different time periods (medieval and modern) is a lot of fun purely from a crossover perspective but also as ANOTHER manifestation of their duality motif! And THAT is the type of tasty shipping fuel that I LIVE for!

So with Grimhilde and Cruella being of two different time periods, they also simultaneously coexist in one time period. Cruella in the original animated film may have been released in the 1960s, but her animator, Marc Davis, designed her to be a throwback to the old Hollywood glamor of the 1930s. Most specifically Tallulah Bankhead...

And Marlene Dietrich...

Cruella is pure Old Hollywood 1930s glamor trapped in a late 50s/early 60s modern domestic setting. And you know whose movie was made in the 1930s and has a very 1930s cultural aesthetic to it?

And Grimhilde herself is designed based on ANOTHER 1930s film villainess, She (Who Must Be Obeyed):

A movie that was famous for its Art Deco sets, and Art Deco is one of the main aesthetic motifs attributed to Cruella in the Glenn Close movies. So stylistically speaking, the two of them despite coming from different time periods and different worlds coexist in a way that is very old Hollywood. And with that combined link to the 30s, it helps the two of them to coexist peacefully and harmoniously in the same time period. They meet in this glamorous and mythologized liminal space. Heck, with Cruella's aesthetic links to the 1930s, I personally headcanon that she grew up absolutely obsessed with old Hollywood and making a concentrated effort to emulate that energy in her own style. Since Grimhilde is kind of an Old Hollywood character come to life, it's almost like Cruella can be a fangirl of something that she's admired for her whole life when she gets with Grimhilde, and you know Grimhilde is gonna LOVE that attention.

In addition, I personally like to be very cognizant about my ships with regards to what the individual character is going to look for in terms of a romantic partner and why the character that I've chosen for them suits that specific need. With Grimhilde, we know that she was married to Snow White's father and that she killed him, so we know that she didn't have any real love for that man, possibly any man. She rules over her kingdom alone and doesn't want anyone to rule beside her. In the Snow White comics and deleted scenes from the film, she showcases a sort of romantic rivalry for Prince Florian, but her affections for him are never about wanting an equal. She wants him because he is young and handsome and compliments her beauty and elevates her image in a way that helps give her more power through her beauty. So for Grimhilde, she needs a lover who can fill that niche - not someone to rival her or rule beside her, but someone who can be a perfect accessory to her beauty. Cruella being all about fashion and style is absolutely that person. She's very cognizant of appearances and what can accentuate or take away from beauty and aesthetics. That inherent utility to their relationship means that it would be something that Grimhilde would be open to indulging, and from there deeper feelings can develop under the right circumstances in a way that they wouldn't without having that utility first.

So that's Grimhilde's side of things. But what about Cruella? Well, we see Cruella's relation with love mostly revolving around this sort of one sided attraction that she has to Anita. And at first glance that seems contradictory to her getting with the queen, because Cruella is obviously going after a dainty and demure woman who she can kind of steamroll and collect as another fashion accessory. However, I think what makes this work so well is that it really showcases that Cruella has an attraction to traditional feminine beauty and women in general, and Grimhilde is of course is the fairest woman of all. The Glen Close movie adds an interesting dynamic to Cruella's attraction to Anita in that she enjoys the creative interaction that she has with Anita. Never really noticed Anita until the two of them started to collaborate creatively, and I feel like that's a big thing that Cruella needs and wants in a partner, someone who engages that creative side of her brain and understands her drive for aesthetics and beauty. And, as previously stated, who better to do that than the Queen of beauty herself? Grimhilde is a perfect model of unlimited dramatic creativity wrapped in a feminine and beautiful package that would set Cruella's heart ablaze.

Together the two of them fulfill that perfect niche for each other and foster a creative, beautiful, and bloodthirsty ruthless energy that would make them feel seen and supported. They effectively create their own little world of 1930s fantasy glamor when they come together, and that's just beautiful to me.

Those are the biggies, but some other really fun pieces of shipping fuel: *I love the aesthetic they have with them both being tall women with dramatic almost drag queen makeup and outfits that have tones of black, white, and red in their own signature styles. And Cruella has the flowing fur coat with the red liner and Grimhilde has the flowing cape with the red liner and so they can be very flouncy and twirly with their styles. *Grimhilde keeps a royal huntsman who can kill all of the animals for Cruella whenever she wants. *They both have similar structures to their stories - they start out on friendly or familial terms with the protagonists before they show their true colors, then they entrust men to kill the innocent creatures needed to enact their plan but those men fail them, forcing Grimhilde and Cruella to take matters into their own hands, and then the finales showcase them both transforming into frightening demented versions of themselves (old hag and crazy demon eyes Cruella during the car chase) madly pursuing their goals until they ultimate bring about their own defeats by the environment turning against them *Cruella has the green smoke of her cigarette which echoes the green and smoke of the Magic Mirror, and also Cruella's chain smoking being a sort of poison in and of itself links back nicely to Grimhilde's literal poisons. *OUAT gives Cruella magic powers and ties to the Author, and Grimhilde also has magic powers and is a literal storybook villain.

So, yes, at first glance, EvilPuppies may seem like just a crackship, but it's really not. There is SO much here in both their canon interactions and in their numerous parallels, and there are honestly probably even more that I'm forgetting. They are the crowning queens of femslash for me for good reason, and I adore them, darlings!

Out of curiosity, thoughts on Scriddler?

i thought, that one day, i’d might be asked this lol. 

i’ll be frank, the nature of popularity of that ship kinda confuses me to this day. not in irked sense, i just generally was surprised to see so much stuff for them. like, i don’t remember them interacting in anything, that i’ve watched / read. which tbh, doesn’t say much, since i’m very picky about what i engage with, when it comes to superhero media outlets. so maybe, it did happen somewhere an’ i just didn’t see it. i remember casually browsing a few of accs, who shipped it, curious, if they had some specific comic strip or cut scenes from the game, which depict those two together an’ that’s what lead them to idea of this ship. but i saw nothing of sorts. an’ it’s not a problem, naturally. but for me, an outsider, who ships a completely different thing, it was a bit puzzling. just how it came to be this broad, if there wasn’t any huge kickstarter. or well, not the one, that i’ve glimpsed. 

either way, i’ll begin with saying scriddler doesn’t personally work for me. nor does it have smth, that i seek in my otps. with this in mind, i have no intention to belittle anyone with what will follow below. it’s just my own whimsical outlook on it, based on many individual criteria, that might be vastly different for others, who see things in that ship, that i’m incapable of. similar to how i see things in my rare ships, that i know would make many folks quirk a brow as to why ‘that’s even a thing’. 

now, about jon an’ edward. a pair that might sound good on paper, depending on what you include in said paper, but for me it’s like putting a hardcore dnd fan into a pit with hardcore bookworm, an’ expect them to get along swell, just bc they’re both outcasts. ignoring how the first one is more show-offish an’ loudly proud of his abilities, an’ the other one is kinda shut-in with occasional god complex lol. one of them tends to throw ugly tantrums, the other one prone to meltdowns. both are sociopaths, who have little understanding of ‘how to human’, unless they need to pretend *for small periods of time*. 

in short, i cannot see them having enough patience to handle one another in almost 95% of their interactions. i can’t imagine antisocial, snappy jonathan to be able to tolerate edward’s endless need for praise an’ attention. more so, i struggle to picture jon even knowing how to react in those situations, or being willing to put aside a book, an’ listen to nygma’s newest scheme, if he’s not in the mood for it. or see edward going along with whatever crane has cooked up *some fear plan*, if he already has his own in drafting. it doesn’t help, that they’re also a slightly different ‘breed’ of villains too. 

indeed, they’re both operate more on intellectual level vs brute force *not without use of it tho*, but where riddler’s tick is the actual level of intelligence or level of knowledge, the scarecrow is a mindrape kind of villain. nygma likes building traps an’ labyrinths, giving quests an’ a chance to ‘win’, even if it’s all be a faux in the end. jonathan, on other hand, is mix between being sadistic an’ pragmatic. they both want / need a very different things *usually*, when they kick bruce or whoever else around. or in other words, they’re kinda useless to each other’s obsessions an’ it’s hard to imagine them functionally combining their efforts, without smth going wrong or one of them getting pissed off at the other. which was one of few reasons why jonathan got fed up with the joker, when they had their team-up *during the bane era*. crane doesn’t play well with others, an’ he also has a short temper, when someone keeps doing things, that he views as useless or silly. an’ nygma being prideful as he is, most likely won’t just swallow jon’s critic, esp bc he would have some of his own stored as well. neither of them is actually a team player. so here goes their supposed villain team up for me, like even from a technical aspect. they don't strike me as villains, who can have buddy-buddy relationships, even in part bc of their 'big personalities'.

an’ circling back to their obsessions, it’s pretty much a core of their persona. the root of their disease an’ addiction. an’ also a thing, that usually pushes them to engage with anyone in a meaningful way at all *at the very beginning, at least* an' it’s kinda clinical in that regard too. i don’t think that jon would be engaged with riddler’s fear in any intimate fashion, for one. i don’t think, that past abuse or trauma or hardship is enough for him to get obsessed with a person. in fact, i think that he usually simply gets pleasure from making someone feel awful as simple as it sounds. unless, they’re his bully or someone, who has wronged him, he seems to just forget about those, who he hurt along the way. it’s unflattering aspect of the antisocial brain, but that’s just how it is. nygma’s past won’t be able to be memorable for him, partly due to crane’s general lack of ability to relate to others, without it being very heavily connected to his own woes. an’ even then, he tends to misunderstand it. an’ in return, doubt that nygma would understand why jonathan was that affected by bullying, considering that in edward’s eyes, it’s an attention *no matter what kind* an’ attention is good. after all, he did say that people usually literally looked past him, not even jocks were interested in tormenting him, until he became smth ‘worthy’ of their aggression. so from his perspective, he might think that jon being dramatic about it, since crane was on opposite side of the issue, he always attracts attention to himself. a very bad, bad kind, but attention anyhow. meanwhile, nygma *in his own eyes* has to fight tooth an’ nail to get any. an’ it might start as one time fight, but it will be an always looming issue, that eventually would blow into their faces. there is no denial, that it played a huge part of what made them so dependent on their gimmicks in the first place. the way the world around them engaged with them or in nygma’s case, the way, it did not. so yeah,  it’ll be a big ole mess, an’ neither would be able to navigate such a situation. 

from what i saw, people tend to depict them as ‘two evil old men in relationships’, an’ it feels like they both more put together in those set ups, than they usually are. or like jon is very receptive toward edward’s attempt to befriend him, an’ nygma actually is pretty good at figuring out what scarecrow might like an’ what not. an’ the problem with it is that i don’t see edward being this thoughtful about anyone. ever. period. in most cases, his disorder just won’t let him be this considering, even if he would have wanted to. like, even if we take newest batman 2022 movie, in there riddler is very-very delusional about the bat, an’ it doesn’t even occur to him, that bruce might have different needs / goals vs what edward imagined him to lol. an’ jonathan is this, but even worse. he openly tends to dehumanise an’ objectify others, seeing them only as tools or props to get what he wants. i don’t think that such person would suddenly act differently around nygma, who on top of everything is also clingy an’ needy. for jonathan, who doesn’t have any experience with companionship at all, an’ who lived most of his life alone, that’s be overwhelming an’ confusing, an’ also annoying. whatever good qualities they have, an’ whatever we love them for, it’s given that both jon an’ nygma be hard to be around in long term, an’ would at times get hella unpleasant too. picturing them trying to mend things in 'normal' ways, or talking about it like normal people is smth that i personally cannot invision at all. or in other words, from my perspective, they’re too mentally ill for each other. in fiction, it's often be a positive thing. like, that two mavericks with huge problems can make it work together, but my personal experiences pretty much prevent me from seeing it this way. unless, one of the two is at least somewhere leveled or tries to be, there is just no way for such relationships to hold on for too long. in jon's an' riddler's case, we talking about an actual extremes on top of all, so it's be even harder for one of them to pull up the other, when they themselves unwell. one might argue, that there is potential for them to make each other worse, then. but they already *objectively* suck on their own as people. the corruption only works if there is smth too corrupt to begin with. some versions of the scarecrow an' riddler are already too far gone, for anything else to make them suck more lol. an' once again, they don't share gimmick, they don't share worldview or have the same goals, so it's hard to picture them infecting the other with their own desease, so to speak.

there is kinda more, that i can say on the topic, but it’s getting hella long already, so i’d skip a few things an’ will go straight to my next point. i suppose, that i already gave an outline of why i cannot see them working together personality wise, so next i’d get to their general aesthetics or visuals. the surface stuff, if you may.

i love their general designs *some more than the others, naturally*. but when i look at them side by side, i’ll be honest, i just see two bottoms lol. an’ while yeah, there is such a thing as switching, i kinda rarely vibe with it. an’ with jon an’ edward, it’s just that. they're purebred bottom cocksuckers in my eyes. them havin’ twink on twink sex isn't very sexy or hot to me. i feel like they both would want or at least have that not-so-secret fantasy about being domed into ground by a 'superior man'. bottoms fighting each other about who should top is more of a comedy set-up in my eyes, than anything else. esp bc they both will be like 'you should top' vs 'i wanna top' lmao. i also will add, that i hc both edward an' jon as kinda shallow in sense of who they find attractive. i picture them pawing after men, who are *technically speaking* out of their league. my personal joke about them is that they're both middle aged virgins with hilariously high standards, who won't beat it just to anyone or anything. they pick misery over everything else lol.

an’ that’s all that i’ve got on the topic of scrridler, pretty much! hopefully, this mini essay did explain my view on the pair. an’ i also hope that it was at least, kind of entertaining to read as an outsider's pov. in the end, if you ship it, i do encourage you to just see this as some rando sharing their opinion an' nothing more.

Day 5 : Your OTP

Many consider this a crack ship. It is mostly because the characters have less than 5 minutes worth of interactions and those interactions aren't really special or cheesy in any way. So, where exactly does this ship come from? What exactly gave us the shippy feels? Personally... I don't know. I was thinking about it a lot, but I seriously have no idea. One day I just woke up and I shipped them. And I still do. It has been around 7 years since this is one of my favorite ships, and I have no clue how it all even started.

Still, I would love to share my views on this very unlikely couple. More precisely, I would like to explain how I think their relationship started, what their relationship looks like, how long their relationship lasts...

After the Shūtoku-Rakuzan match in the WinterCup, Kiyoshi just couldn't stop thinking about his opponent for the game. Kotarō was just incredible and talented, and Kiyoshi hated how useless he was against him. He loved basketball, and that defeat hurt him deeply. Instead of sitting in his room and crying about it, he decided to practice more, become better and face Kotarō again. This time, he would do better, not necessarily beat him, just not feel as useless. He promised that to himself!

He was a graduate student at that time and when college preparations, graduation and all the formalities hit him, he had no choice but to forget about facing Kotarō for a while.

When college started, everything went quite well for him and he continued playing basketball. Practicing harder than ever, one day, he felt ready, and all he had to do was meet up with Kotarō. It was easy! Kotarō was pretty pleasantly surprised when Kiyoshi sent him a message, and he quickly accepted to meet up with him in Tokyo. After all, Kotarō is a pretty social and friendly person and making another friend is something he always looks forwards to! He was also summoned for a rematch in basketball, and that sounded pretty fun!

They met up that weekend and played some one-on-one. In the end, the result was similar to the one from almost a year ago. Kotarō easily won, except that this time Kiyoshi felt better about himself and did a better job. Of course, Kotarō noticed that, so he complimented him and expressed that he would love to play more with Kiyoshi. At that moment, Kiyoshi felt pretty proud of himself, and of course, he agreed to have more matches with Kotarō!

They would meet up on weekends, when both found time to see each other and travel to each other's cities. They had so much fun with each other playing basketbal that they started seeing each other more often. After some time, they started doing other things, like going out to cafés, going sightseeing in the area, going on walks... Being in Kotarō's presence was like a drug to Kiyoshi. He was such a positive guy, always smiling, always searching for ways to have fun, he was so funny and adventurous and hanging out with him after an exhausting week was so refreshing... Seeing Kotarō became something that he was looking forward to every day and his go-to plan for every weekend.

Though, Kotarō was a graduate student this year, and he and Kiyoshi started hanging out less and less since he couldn't find enough time with all the college preparations. They were both pretty sad about it, but there was nothing they could do other than accept it. Kiyoshi realised that his life was rather boring and dull without Kotarō, and he took some time to reflect on how he really felt when he was around him. He was always pretty happy, but also a little nervous, he wanted to be around him a lot, he really cared about his opinions, he wanted to see him smile, impress him by making a good joke, looking good or playing well, he talked about him a lot and now he was thinking about him so much... After Googling his symptoms the almighty Internet diagnosed him with having a crush. Well. That explained everything.

Every time he got a message from Kotarō informing him he has time to meet up over the weekend, his heart would skip a beat. Ever since the day he realised he might have a crush, every time they saw each other it was just becoming more obvious to him. He was really crushing hard. He didn't really want to make it that obvious though, so he started acting a little... Tsundere. He really thought it was a good mask.

At last, when the college stuff was over for Kotarō, they could finally see each other all the time again, and they were both so excited for that! The greatest news ever struck Kiyoshi when he saw Kotarō right after his finals. He wrote in a college in Tokyo! Now, that meant that in a couple of months they would live in the same city and could hang whenever they felt like it.

That time came by soon, and ever since the first day Kotarō moved in, they started hanging out almost every day. But what was Kiyoshi supposed to do now? The more time they spent together, the more he was falling in love and the harder it was for him to wear the fake mask. He would make the first move now, but he was not sure how Kotarō felt about them.

Kotarō knew Kiyoshi liked him, it was painfully obvious. Though, at first, he only loved the attention Kiyoshi was giving him, how Kiyoshi was always so excited to see him and how he looked at him with some strange eyes. After some time, he started finding it cute, and he loved seeing Kiyoshi like that, so silly because he had a crush oh him. It was a little funny how he was trying to hide it and failing miserably, but it was still so sweet! He grew to really love being around Kiyoshi, he loved feeling important to someone and he always felt so appreciated and loved, he also thought Kiyoshi was smart and cool and pretty... He soon figured out that he probably had a litttle crush as well!

Great! Well, Kotarō knew that they both liked each other, and Kiyoshi seemed too unsure about making the first step, so Kotarō decided that he was going to do it. It wasn't that hard for an easy-going person like him.

'Hey, I know you like me, you can stop pretending you don't. You know, I really like you, too... Wanna be boyfriends, maybe?'

Kotarō said that on a completely random day, in the most random moment ever. Of course, after hearing that Kiyoshi was rather confused. Kotarō has known all along? He liked him, too? He thought he was dreaming. Before he collected himself and opened his mouth to say something, he felt a hand placed on top of his.

'Sooo, what do you say?'

Kotarō was looking up at him expectantly with his eyes shinning. Kiyoshi's words failed him and all he could do was just kiss his cute face. And just like that, they became boyfriends!

Just like every relationship, the first few months were just incredible. Magical. They were so in love, they were getting along really well and didn't argue much, just bicker from time to time, they had a lot of fun, went on cute dates, bought each other gifts, went places together, they had told their friends and everybody was supportive of them! It was just like a dream! They really, truly enjoyed being with each other... Until life hit.

Ever since the moment Kiyoshi knew Kotarō was his boyfriend, the silliness of having a crush was slowly, but surely, starting to wash away and now that it was secured that Kotarō loved him, he felt comfortable with being himself. His irritable side, that he didn't really show that much before, was starting to become more and more prominent. A Kiyoshi in a bad mood was not something impossible that Kotarō couldn't stand or deal with. He knew his ways to cheer his sad partner up, or calm him down when he was angry. Kotarō was pretty tolerant and really tried his best to be a good boyfriend to Kiyoshi in those moods. After all, they were a couple and they promised that they will always be together, in happiness and in sadness, understand each other and love each other. He had a lot of patience and loved the relationship.

Though, Kiyoshi's moods kept getting worse and worse, mostly because of college and stress, and Kotarō, who was also in a similar situation with academic pressure sitting right on his lungs, who was in his first year of college and had a hard time adapting to the new pace of life, started slowly losing the patience. They started fighting more and more and bickering over little things all the time. Since they are both rather short-tempered, in the heat of an arguement they would sometimes say things they didn't really mean, especially Kiyoshi with his foul language, and hurt each other. Kotarō was not exactly honey, especially when he felt attacked, so whenever Kiyoshi would hurt his feelings and attack him, his vengeful side would wake up. It wasn't anything special, because Kotarō didn't really want to hurt the person he loved badly. It was some small things, but it was still unpleasant.

They knew things were done when they stopped apologising to each other and created a lot of negative energy. Still, they decided to talk. They really wanted to do something about the current situation, save their relationship somehow. In the end, they agreed that they loved each other and cared for each other deeply, that they had a great time and enjoyed the relationship, but that it was probably just the wrong time. They agreed to part ways for a while, maybe it would turn out to be forever, but they couldn't know that.

Anyways, this is how it goes in my head. I really tried to explain a lot of things here because I found that my view of this ship is quite different from the common dynamic. I enjoy this ship like this. I quite love the idea of them just being young adults and having fun, forgetting about their not so good past where Kiyoshi had one sided beef with Kotarō, but also finding each other because of it. I also live for the idea of Kiyoshi having a soft spot for someone and becoming this silly confused dork, something very unexpected and unusual for him. The most obvious person that anyone would have a soft spot for is a person like Kotarō. He is just like a puppy, or a kitten.

Still, I can't see them last long, no matter how much I love them. After the 'everything is perfect I am so in love phase' they just learn they don't naturally get along. They are too similar in that one way: short-temper combined with pride. When their arguements break out and they hurt each other with their words, sometimes they feel too much pride and just skip the applogy part. Even if they feel really bad about what they said... Also, college is tough, especially in first year when one is supposed to adapt to this whole new schooling style and, in Kotarō's case, whole new city. Naturally, he went a little crazy. Kiyoshi is always a little crazy so that is why their arguements start getting bad.

Maybe it is good for them to just have fun for a while and then ditch the relationship idea. They could just be friends. Though, who knows, maybe later in life, when they are not so crazy and are more stable and more mature, they could meet up again and fall in love... Still, this is good for me, I like it like this.

Note: The characters are a little OOC and I am very well aware of that. I have been putting sprikles of my personal love experiences and struggles into this couple over the years, because it is my comfort ship. ✨️

What I like about him: How much he clearly cares for Tabe and Setsuno (blah blah the camaraderie warms my heart, blah blah trauma from having no friends in school blah blah), pretty Crystals, buff man make brain go brrr.

What I dislike about him: that one screenshot where you can see he’s got stubble under his mask. No. Fucking shave your face dude. You already shave your head. Also that he got no screen time outside of getting his ass kicked :��)

Favourite moment: explaining why he and the other 2/3s of the trash trio are so close and that they’re not worth anything without each other (EEEEEEEEEE-)

Situations I want to see more: Give me day to day trash trio shenaniganary. I want them doing normal stuff: going grocery shopping, hanging out with the other bullets, pestering overhaul, just slice of life stuff. I’d also love his relationships with Toya and Tabe to be developed more. Like, yeah, they’re trash but with each other they’re trash with meaning (EEEEEEEE-*is knocked out) but I want to know the actual dynamics. Toya is supposed to be the leader, do they actual respect that? (See more on this in the head cannon bit)

Interesting AU: One where he’s in a bizarre interlinked family tree with like, 6 others from the series. This is one me and my bf made, I dubbed it the Sin AU because each person’s quirk is from one of the seven deadly sins: Midnight is Lust, Deidoro is Gluttony, Monoma is Envy, Hojo is Greed, Tiger is Sloth, and there were two more I can’t recall at the current time. It doesn’t really do much other than add another layer of depth to the character, but I think it’s cool none the less. (Also I wanna see how the family reunions would go lol)

Crossover: Give this man a cavern crasher, give this man a rock stomper, we’re going to Berk, Gadies and Lents. I wanna see the entire Hassaikai with dragons from how to train your dragon so bad!! (I actually have headcannons for everyone! If you want to know I’ll elaborate in the notes)

OTP: ok ok ok. It’s weird, I know, but you gotta hear me out on this one: Hojo and Pixie Bob. The reason I say this is linked back to the Sin AU (Ibara must have coded my iPad or something, it won’t let me type sin without autocorrecting to sun a million times) because I Headcannon Deidoro and Ragdoll to be friends/partners/no one can fucking tell, so because Ragdoll and pixie are best friends, and in that au Deidoro and hojo were brothers, plus Hojo and tiger were related, it just kinda fell into place. Plus Pixie is super desperate for a partner and I feel like Hojo gets zero bitches, he’s the human embodiment of the ‘No bitches?’ Meme. Anyways.

Other ships: Overhaul and Chrono (because under no circumstance will I ever split them up). Purely cos I saw a post saying that entire rant about the trash trio being useless without overhaul and them owing everything to him was said by Hojo, not Setsuno, and it sounding like he had a crush on him.

BROTP: the rest of the trash trio. Duh.

NOTP: anyone from the league except now that I think about it I can weirdly see him working with Magne? …hm. And any pro too.

Headcannon time!!!

1. While Setsuno is the ‘leader’ of the trash trio, and he’s good at it, don’t get me wrong, he can definitely strategise and knows what he’s doing, he’s terrible at just…existing day to day life, so Hojo typically has to help him. He’s his common sense, in a way. He’s to Setsuno what Tengai is to Rappa, just both are a lot happier with the arrangement.

2. He and Setsuno actually knew each other before they joined the hassiakai, not well but they attended the same school and had a few classes together.

3. He’s 22 years old and the oldest of the trash trio. He’s also the third tallest in the bullets at 6’1 (only Rappa and Katsukame are taller cos…yeah. Btw this is completely ignoring the canon evidence showing otherwise because Tabe is not allowed to be tall. He is baby and he is no taller than 5’3 and I will bite anyone who says otherwise. I’m only saying this because I want to be taller than at least one person in the hassiakai-)

4. Sad backstory time. He was orphaned: his dad cheated on his mum before Hojo was born and his mum died of a drug overdose when he was around four. He was then moved to live with his aunt who..wasn’t an amazing parent but was better than what he had previously. As he got older, about 16, he found out what actually happened with his parents, and attempted to find his dad. He eventually managed to get in contact with him- however his dad wanted nothing to do with him. This destroyed him and he attempted to end his life, however overhaul found him and took him in. A few months later, Setsuno joined, and then Tabe about half a year after that, and with that, the trash trio was fully formed.

Huh. Didn’t know I had that much to say about him. I really thought I’d have a few sentences for each question…anyways, hope you enjoyed!

Hi anon! You don't need to tell me who they are, Yanshen is one of my top five otps rn! I love that old gremlin and his boytoy, lmao.

"Oh ho, looks like I've lost..." And, saying this, Yan Wushi stands up, his hands going to the belt holding his outer robes closed.

"What are you doing?" Shen Qiao knows better than to ask. Engaging with Yan Wushi's antics is the surest way to ensure he escalates. But he's unable to stop himself before the strangled question emerges. That's even worse - his tone will convince Yan Wushi that Shen Qiao is affected.

(Shen Qiao is definitely affected by the glimpse of under robe and pale skin beneath that's revealed by Yan Wushi's in-progress disrobing, but Shen Qiao wishes he hadn't revealed that he was affected.)

"Exactly what I said I'd do," Yan Wushi says smugly. "Remember the rules?"

"Of weiqi? Obviously I remember. I just defeated you..."

"Indeed you did. But do you truly not recall what I said when we began this game?"

Frowning, Shen Qiao replays the afternoon in his mind. They hadn't seen each other for a while, and after catching up over tea, Yan Wushi had pulled a weiqi board and a bag of qizi from his qiankun sleeve and suggested they play a game. Shen Qiao had agreed, and Yan Wushi had said...

Our usual rules, yes?

Not "the" usual rules; very specifically "our" usual rules.

Shen Qiao's frown deepened. "What are 'our' usual rules?"

"Tsk, tsk. Your memory must be playing up again."

Stop engaging, stop engaging, stop engaging... but it's so hard to enforce that stricture on himself when Yan Wushi has his belt fully undone and has let it drop to the ground, when his purple outer robes are hanging loosely over his powerful figure. "Should I prepare the board to play again?" is the closest Shen Qiao can get to distancing himself from Yan Wushi's behavior.

"I'll have to make sure I defeat you this time," Yan Wushi says thoughtfully. "I'd much prefer to see you disrobe than to do so myself."

The mental castigation imploring that he end this discussion is useless. "Why should I disrobe?" Shen Qiao asks.

"Because of the rules," explains Yan Wushi as if his emphasis clarifies everything.

And then he clarifies nothing.

Shen Qiao knows that Yan Wushi is trying to force him to ask. Shen Qiao absolutely does not want to ask. But Yan Wushi has now shrugged his shoulders, has now dislodged the purple to slip down his arms and pool about his narrow waist, is now leering at Shen Qiao daring him to react.

What choice, really, does Shen Qiao have?

If he asks, he'll have fed into Yan Wushi's shenanigans, and Yan Wushi will continue to remove his clothing in the most alluring way he can.

If he doesn't ask, he won't know, and Yan Wushi will continue to remove his clothing in the most alluring way he can.

Shen Qiao lost this so-called "game" the moment he agreed to play by "our usual rules" without clarifying what Yan Wushi meant by that.

"What rule?" asks Shen Qiao, resigned.

(Sometimes, resigning to whatever Yan Wushi has in store for Shen Qiao ends up infuriating; other times, it ends up delightful; still others it ends up...well, it ends with them in bed together. Shen Qiao still hasn't decided if that's infuriating or delightful but he also hasn't made much effort...any effort...to put a stop to it, so...)

"Well, a loser must lose something, correct?" Fortunately, Yan Wushi continues without expecting Shen Qiao to confirm that. "I'd never ask an honor daozhang such as yourself to gamble for mere money, so the stakes are one lose, one garment discarded." As if to emphasize his statement (probably to emphasize his statement), Yan Wushi let the robe fall completely from one arm, snagged the hem briefly with the other hand, then let it fall to the ground. Rich purple silk flowed about his feet like water.

"We've never discussed that." Shen Qiao tries not to sound like he's grumbling, but he can't repress a sigh.

"We did." There's a twinkle in Yan Wushi's eye and yes, damn him, he's got Shen Qiao completely ensnared. "The first time you and I played weiqi, I offered the stakes, you demurred at the time, suggesting that perhaps another time would be better."

"The first time? When I had amnesia?"

"I assumed that was because you were blind at the time," Yan Wushi continues, nodding thoughtfully, "the potential allure of stripping was presumably lost on you at the time." He stretches suggestively, and Shen Qiao would give a lot to be able to pretend there was no allure to the movement, no allure to Yan Wushi. "Our rules, yes?"

Yan Wushi gestures at the board, an invitation, a trap.

Shen Qiao heaves another sigh. "Fine..."

Hours later, they're lying entangled on Yan Wushi's bed; Yan Wushi is completely naked, Shen Qiao yet fully clothed. Being garbed in layers of robes did nothing to protect him from Yan Wushi's advances, though, and now they're both hot and sated. Shen Qiao lies atop Yan Wushi; his legs straddle Yan Wushi's hips, and Yan Wushi's arms encircle his back.

(If he'd wanted to protect himself, he would have.)

A deep, sinful chuckle interrupts the quiet evening afterglow. Yan Wushi lifts a hand, drawing patterns over Shen Qiao's back; with the fabric separating them, his touch feels far too distant, but Shen Qiao can't bring himself to move however much he'd like to feel skin on skin.

And then he realizes.

"You lost on purpose, didn't you..." Shen Qiao sits up enough to glare an accusation at Yan Wushi, and he's met immediately with a confirming smirk.

"I win," Yan Wushi announces.

Anger bubbles through Shen Qiao's mind, struggles toward expression...and then dissipates into nothing.

It's not like Shen Qiao had any actual complaints about how the day had gone. "We both win," he says.

Yan Wushi shakes his head. "No, definitely me. I got you."

That he does. Shen Qiao can't even explain how or why, but Yan Wushi does have him, and while he can't imagine Yan Wushi would ever admit it...Shen Qiao has him, too.

"You win," allows Shen Qiao graciously.

He can let Yan Wushi have this one.

As soon as I got this prompt I kinda knew it'd end up being a prequel to my first previous Yanshen ficlet, "A Game of His Own Devising." That one is Yan Wushi pov...and Shen Qiao finally gets to win. :D

Also, I started this ficlet yesterday morning; I wsa like 80% sure that Shen Qiao played weiqi in the donghua, but it's been so long since I watched it that I couldn't remember for sure and I was like "fuck it, I'm just gonna roll with it." But then yesterday evening I (finally) started reading vol. 1 of the official English translation...and Yan Wushi actually plays weiqi against Yan Shengyuan in the early chapters! So I'm feeling like I nailed it. I hope you're okay with me using weiqi instead of literal (western) chess, anon...

SONIA MY BABYGIRL!!!!! oh my goodness i am in love with her <3 one of my favourite girls of the whole danganronpa series, what a sweetheart!! answering all of my opinions on her was so fun i loved it

favourite thing about them: i love how strong she is, like, how much she can stand up for herself!! she is confident and wonderful and strong, and her design is very polished in my opinion, her dress suits her so well and i love the colours (and also she is very pretty) (i would like to kiss her) (she is also very beautiful) (did i mention how pretty she is)

least favourite thing about them: hmmm, to be honest, in general i don't like when characters exist as a big reference to something else. if you didn't know, sonia is based on the band nirvana: novoselic is the surname of someone in the band, nevermind is one of their albums, and in utero (written on her uniform) is another album. i love sonia so much, and it's just a shame she's based on something i have no interest in, yknow? however i love to ignore all of that lol because nevermind and novoselic are pretty and european sounding anyway so they fit her nicely, so it's not a big deal. just wish the words had been come up with a different way really. but YEAH i love her design regardless :) my silly little gal

random headcanon: she is a hopeless romantic, she loves to talk about crushes, and valentine's day is definitely her favourite holiday! she wants her and her friends to all have wonderful happy fairy tale endings

unpopular opinion: i've seen people say she was useless in the games before and that the plot would be basically the same if she wasn't there, but that's not true in my opinion! she saw hiyoko in ch3, her and gundham at the end of ch4 is impactful, and in ch5 she's suspicious when she's looking through the military stuff etc and if i remember correctly she tries to take the blame off of chiaki in the trial, right? and probably other stuff im too empty-brained to remember right now lol. and besides, her interactions with kaz and gundham add comic relief so! :) she is very important to me and the game would not be the same without her

WEARING ANIMALS EARS

The four wandered around the entire mall, sipping bubble tea and shop windows. Challenges between Percy and Jason to see who could reach the top of the escalator first by going up the wrong way were inevitable. Annabeth and Piper, embarrassed by their boyfriends, pretended not to know them throughout, even when the guys tried to catch up them after the race.

They walked for almost half the day before deciding to enter a small, deserted shop. Unlike the flashy stores competing with each other, filled with glitter and decorations, this little shop was completely hidden. Annabeth swore she hadn't even noticed it on their first pass.

The girls entered first, followed by their boyfriends, and as soon as the door opened, the high-pitched chime of the bell attached to it resonated throughout the room. The interior was empty, there were no customers, though the merchandise was of excellent quality. They sold kitschy items for both indoor and outdoor use, and Piper thought it was suitable for really eccentric types. There was no one at the cash register—whoever the owner was, they didn't expect many visitors.

The guys roamed the various shelves, staying fairly close—they had been through too much to let their guard down so quickly. Piper approached a rack where outrageously flamboyant clothes were displayed—long and enormous, some adorned with neon orange sequins, others with synthetic flamingo feathers. Annabeth wrapped a feather scarf around her neck, laughing with her friend about those horrendous outfits.

Percy and Jason looked around with one hand in their pockets. It seemed strange to them that people passed by the shop without even glancing, to neither of them liked it.

"Can I help you?" a warm voice whispered behind the two guys. They both turned abruptly, allowing the girls' laughter to die down. "No, we were just taking a look" Jason replied, gripping the coin in his pocket.

The young lady with long brown hair and eyes as black as night nodded, telling them that if they found anything of interest, they just had to call her. The guys nodded, though somewhat nervous.

All four gave each other a quick glance, agreeing that it was an excellent opportunity to slip away. Percy went to the door, pulling it towards him, but it seemed stuck. "Let me try" Jason said, taking the handle. Useless. It wouldn't open.

The guys looked around, the woman seemed to have disappeared. None of the four liked the situation. It wasn't the first time they found themselves trapped in a shop, forced to fight against a psychopathic lady who wanted to kill, eat, or petrify them.

Together, they circled the store. The displayed items seemed like ordinary merchandise—there was nothing unusual inside, yet none of the demigods were convinced enough to let their guard down.

"Guys, look" Piper exclaimed, approaching a shelf. The three thought she had found something to incriminate the woman as the monster of the year, but it was just simple headbands with animal ears. "Who would ever wear these?" the girl laughed, picking one up.

"Percy certainly wouldn't" Jason teased.

"It's a challenge, Grace?" Percy asked.

"Maybe!" the boy replied, wanting a rematch for the escalator race.

"Guys, calm down" Annabeth scolded them, telling Piper to put the headband down. "We still don't know who works here. We have to be cautious."

"I see you found the headbands; do you like them?" the woman reappeared, placing a heavy and dusty box on the counter with a sigh. "They cost fifty cents each. I haven't managed to apply the prices yet. You know, I just opened today" she laughed, pushing a strand of hair that had fallen onto her face. The guys relaxed their shoulders, keeping a safe distance. "Actually, I didn't expect any customers. I had written on the window that the official opening would be next weekend"

"No, there was nothing written" Annabeth replied, glancing at the window. Bur only then she noticed the huge sign announcing the shop's opening. "Oh—" she whispered. "I hadn't noticed"

The guys looked at each other, feeling guilty for thinking that the woman was a monster. For once, she was just a mortal who had recently purchased a space at the mall.

"She said the headbands cost fifty cents?" Percy asked, taking two and heading to the counter to pay, with the friends in tow.

"My first sale!" the woman exclaimed enthusiastically, ringing up the purchase and handing over a light green bag. The guys said goodbye, heading towards the door, only remembering at that moment that it was locked. "Yes, sorry" the woman intervened. "These old hinges sometimes get stuck— I'll have to have them replaced" she mumbled, bidding her first customers farewell, hoping to see them again.

I actually had a thought of a cool alternate timeline fic, where Vanya and Klaus come along with Five when he time travels. She was so worried about him that she was leaving those sandwiches for ages, and leaving the lights on. It would make sense that she would be looking for him. We don't know how long those first couple of jumps of his were, but we do know they took place within a few yards of the front door of their house. And Klaus is bored without his fellow loud mouth trouble maker gone. (I also feel that if I'm going to be true to the characters, Ben would probably be there, too, but four of them would get unwieldy, and also he might be too afraid of Reginald to break the rules...)

Maybe Vanya could have heard from the street vendors or neighbors that they saw Five months later. So she takes to hanging out out front around dinner time. Klaus hangs out with her because he goes outside to smoke all the time anyway, and it's better than being in the house, and it's funny pissing off Dad. Also, if Five and Vanya are going to run away, you better fucking believe he is, too. Vanya explains they're just going to get Five to come home safely, but Klaus thinks going home is for quitters.

So on Five's second jump, right before his jump to the Apocalypse, they're there all bundled up in their winter coats. And Vanya's trying to get him to come home, but Five's all high on his success and is like "I did it, you guys have to see this!" and grabs their hands.

Of course, we know even adult Five has trouble with his calculations, especially when others are involved. Where would they end up? Obviously the apocalypse wouldn't have happened since Vanya wasn't in the timeline anymore. Maybe they still end up some time in 2019, but their siblings are all scattered to the wind, and they don't know where to find them, and they're definitely not going back to their dad. (Maybe Ben isn't dead, because things fell apart way sooner with 3 siblings already gone so early. Maybe Reginald is still dead for some reason? Maybe the apocalypse still happened, just in a different way because the 3 of them being gone set something else into motion??) So they stick together, using their powers to get by without being noticed, and enjoying freedom from Reginald.

Vanya's powers would start to show up soon without her medication. I think Five would be a good person to help her learn to control her powers as he is highly intelligent, methodical, and scientifically-minded like their father, but he actually cares about Vanya's well-being and happiness. And the two of them wouldn't let Klaus just go off the deep-end, and would help him figure out how to control his powers, too, so we see the BAMF-y stuff Seance is capable of. And since Vanya and Klaus are much closer with each other, and supportive of each other, maybe Klaus helps Vanya understand about expressing gender and being yourself way earlier and transitions to Viktor.

(And also there is Klive, but I can't help that's my otp. Go ahead and throw Viktor in there, too, if you want! I'm all about codependent thruples.)

So at some point the 3 of them return to their timeline or just catch up with their adult siblings, and it's like "Oh, look, FIve and our two useless siblings." Except then Klaus and Viktor are way more fucking powerful than them, now.

1- Flora and Helia, they were my first OTP. Headcannons, Flora steals all of his cardigans but he can’t even complain. They inspire each other’s art, they’re just so cheesy and in love it’s great. Saladin adores Flora and just think she’s perfect for Helia. Helia helps Flora with her garden. Flora cuts his hair. They eventually move to live in Lynphea. They have a lot of picnics and hikes. Helia will always get her flowers for her hair and overall be super cheesy. She loves to just hold him and loves his cologne.

2- Aisha and Nabu (I will never forgive Rainbow for what they did), Headcannons, despite being very chill, Nabu will join Aisha on whatever catches her eye be it swimming with sharks or jumping off planes. He helps ground Aisha and it takes her a while before she genuienly believes that he’s there to stay. She teaches him how to dance. He organizes little surprise hikes and little adventures. The only time that Aisha can stay still for more than an hour without getting ansty is when she’s in his arms.

3- Musa and Riven (Rainbow did them so dirty, tbh, they’re only so high because of the potential they had, if this list was exclusively about what we see in the show, they’d be num 5) Headcannons, They’re both touch-starved so they’re constantly touching, be it Riven always having an arm around her or her sitting on his lap half the time. It takes them a long time to learn to be vulnerable and communicate when something bothers them but they eventually get there. She teaches him how to play the guitar. Musa paints his nails from time to time and he refuses to take the polish off. She writes almost all her love songs about him (not that she’d ever admit it to anyone other than him).

4- Tie between Tecna/Timmy and Stella/Brandon (s1-s3 it’s Stella and Brandon, s4-s6 it’s Tecna and Timmy)

Tecna and Timmy Headcannons, their love is very much about the little domestic things. Timmy makes her coffee when she’s working on a project, she cleans his tools when he’s tired, Timmy learns how to make her favorite meals, Tecna cleans his glasses because Timmy won’t clean them unless he straight up can’t see anything. Tecna is ready to fight anyone who even insinuates that Timmy is somehow less than the other Specialists. Timmy accomodates to make Tecna comfortable in any situation and to keep her from being overwhelmed.

Stella and Brandon Headcannons, he gives her massages whenever she’s tired, especially after she becomes queen. PDA. They keep up their flirting game from s2 until they get married (mostly so that the media doesn’t start making rumors about cheating) Stella almost decapitates one of her diplomats when they insinuate that Brandon’s useless. Brandon helps Stella through panic attacks when she feels like she doesn’t know what to do. Stella loves laying on the balcony with him to look at the stars and just talk.

5- Bloom and Sky (Another couple done dirty, s1-s3 they were great but after that… yeah) Headcannons, he loves playing with her hair. They love to travel to different villages of Eraklyon to help out in any way that they can, all of Eraklyon loves Bloom. Sky is one of the only people that can calm Bloom down after a particularly bad nightmare. Sky really bonds with Mike, Mike calls him son and Sky almost starts crying. Sky still has nightmares about the things he did under Valtor’s influence. Bloom will find him awake at 4 am and just hug him and remind him that it wasn’t his fault.

Well, during these past two months, I came to notice a LOT of similarities, tropes and moments in this pairing, that seemed VERY familiar and near to my heart, and while talking about OTPs with my friend @darkhades88​ ,

For real tho. By dismissing a ship, only cuz it’s about two men, you are dismissing every fictional/IRL relationship that has the same tropes. You are dismissing a CANON ship, confirmed by 2 KISSES, 2 CONFESSIONS and 2-4 years of assumptions on their relationship from everyone they met === BASICALLY THE SAME THING BUT STRAIGHT

Tharn and Type discussing in detail financial issues like paying for bills and the division of household chores - some of the most mundane and unromantic but also the most important and complex aspects of every relationship, which are rarely touched upon in dramas for that very reason, makes the OTP acutely authentic and relatable. Because it’s precisely these realities of everyday life which are often the most poignant. Most dramas don’t touch upon them for the very same reasons: most viewers want their OTPs’ relatinships to be “healthy, fluffy, sweet and unproblematic” therefore arguments, the mention of money and who is paying for the happily ever after make them uncomfortable and offend their sensibilities. 

One of the reasons why arguments are so messy is not only because both parties believe they are right, but because each parties often is at least partially legit as with TharnType’s argument about the laundry which comes from a very real and relatable place. 

To understand what leads to it one needs to look at their respective professional lives. That’s why the writer spends so much time on exposition in episode 1. After graduating with his Bachelor degree, Tharn found a job and have been working for over 2 years now. He has a friendly working environment and he’s well-settled in it. On the other hand, Type went on to study a Master degree programme so he could stay with Tharn in Bangkok (his father had wanted him to come back home after finishing his Bachelor studies). Studying medical school is always hard, making it difficult to have a part-time job, so this is Type’s first working experience. The transition between school and work is always demanding: physically, mentally, socially, but also financially because fresh employees get a much lower pay. It’s already difficult enought, but Type has to deal with the added stress of a superior who makes his life a hell. Type is strong, smart, hard-working and very good at what he does and he knows it which makes it so much more frustrating for him that no matter how hard he works, his boss keeps bullying him and demeaning him. The worst thing for Type is that he can’t defend himself and punch his boss in the face like his former self woufl have done. He needs to last and keep the job a whole year to get the necessary working experience for his CV and find a better job with better pay and boss. Therefore Tharn and Type are in a very different place in their careers and it translates into their private lives, as well. As a result, Tharn bears most of the costs and has been doing it for several years, now. 

He knows Type’s been struggling and doing his best so they can be together, that’s why he supports Type in any way he can, including comforting him, driving him to work and paying for the bills, to help him overcome this challenging period. Tharn does it gladly because Type needs him. And that’s also one of the reason why their relationship feels like real marriage - they are married in every sense of the word, with the exception of a marriage certificate and a wedding ceremony.

Type sees all of it and loves Tharn even more for it, happy that he isn’t in this alone and has someone to depend on. He’s mature enough to rely on Tharn and realize that right now, there isn’t much he can do and help. He needs to survive another 6 months with his hellish boss. And he really does it all for Tharn, so they can spend their lives together as they’ve promised each other. That’s the reason why he’s been controlling his temper, putting up with the bullying and why he haven’t told his boss to go fuck himself - he wants to be a worthy partner for Tharn, his equal, help him pay the bills, not a useless person who beats other people and Tharn has to be ashamed of. Type accepts this reality but wants to express gratitude and appreciation to Tharn in his own unique way because with Type, actions always speak louder than words. 

So when Type says that everything he does, he does it for Tharn, he means it in every sense of the word -  controlling his temper, putting up with the exhausting job and terrible boss, studying a Masters degree programme,... - just like he did 7 years ago with Lhong, curbing his temper in front of Jeed, introducing Tharn to his family and friends,...

Type decides to iron Tharn’s clothes to repay him for always being there for him and to show him how much he cares. He actually feels happy doing it, giddy to do something for Tharn, so when Tharn tells him he shouldn’t have, it feels like Tharn just stabbed him into the heart, leaving Type literally struck dumb for a moment, eyes filled with sheer pain which immediately turns into irritation and anger as Tharn digs his grave even deeper. Tharn’s words sting even more because when Type told Tharn that he’s ironing the clothes, seemingly annoyed, he’s actually expecting Tharn to praise him, in his adorably cheesy way that Type secretly loves so much, that Type’s such a good wifey who always takes care of him but none of it comes.

It’s not only Type’s heart that is hurt, but also his pride. Type always felt confident in his studies and abilities, but he struggles now in his first job, while Tharn is successful, satisfied and well-adjusted in his. This disparity drives a certain wedge between them. 

Type misunderstands Tharn’s attempt to ease his workload as a rejection of himself and his love for Tharn. Type knows that right now, he can’t do much for Tharn so Tharn’s words break his heart. It makes him feel that he is not good enough, useless. Back in episodes 8 and 9, Type learned that if he only kept receiving from Tharn without giving anything back in return, it would make their relationship eventually break and he’s been trying ever since to become a good boyfriend to Tharn, someone who would make Tharn happy and not hurt him. 

And at this moment, due to his issues at work, he must feel like he doesn’t give Tharn as much as he should in certain aspects of their relationship. 

So when he thinks Tharn is rejecting even the little he can give, Type feels useless, disregarded and rejected. So he lashes out because that’s his defense mechanism and no amount of growing up is going to change that because that’s simply who Type is, lashing out his claws like a feral kitten when he feels threatened and hurt.

Tharn is usually so good at understanding and interpreting Type’s actions, but his mindreading ability can only do so much. More importantly, he is very drunk, which is a very important factor, and that is muddling his brain and, after 7 years, Type’s become much better at communicating his emotions with words so Tharn doesn’t need to read all of Type’s hidden intention because he’s grown used to the fact that Type tells him and shows his love more openly. He also feels secure in the relationship so he is much more unfiltered, not minding his words so much, no longer fearing that Type might get angry if he told him about his dislikes. Ironically, the argument occurs because they both mean well and are being considerate of each other, trying to show their love and care, but it backfires on them because they have different personalities and use different methods to show them so they clash. Therefore the argument comes from a very common and real place.

When Type throws the clothes at him and leaves, Tharn is compeletely baffled what has just happened. However, after he sobers up a little, it dawns at him that he must have hurt Type and hurries to apologize, desperate to make amends and clear the misunderstanding before it grows into something serious. 

He is nervously fidgeting with his fingers the whole time, so insecure and vulnerable, and with his sad puppy eyes and the way he nuzzles against Type’s body he looks so miserable and needy, Type has a hard time not to forgive him right away.

It’s such a joy to watch two adults having an honest, unfiltered conversation about the realities and demands of everyday life. There is nothing romantic about it but it makes TharnType’s love story feel palpably real and authentic. It means so much when Type actually voices and openly communicates his insecurites about their relationship being unequal because Tharn has been the main breadwinner.

It’s undeniable how much Tharn understands his boyfriend. When he gently begs him not to think too much, you can tell that Tharn can feel that Type's struggles at work are weighting down on him, making him to overthink things. And Tharn assures him that none of those things matter to him. It reminds me of the time when Tharn told Type that he doesn’t have to push himself into accepting that he’s dating a man because Tharn would wait for him no matter how much time it would take. And now it’s similar. It doesn’t matter how long it takes Type to settle in his work or how much he struggles because Tharn will always be there for him.

Finally, it makes so much sense that Tharnk seeks reassurance that he’s been forgiven with cuddles because intimacy and physical closeness has always been such an important and integral part of their relationship. In the very beginning, they used to be the only reciprocation he got from Type since even when Type denied his feelings for him, Type’s body never lied to him and always wanted Tharn.
