“Left or right?”

The gelid walls of the lower Midden, rimed and somehow still wet as they are, seem to swallow sound where they should instead echo back. Likely it is some fault of the carpet of cobwebs, catching whispers just as well as whatever unfortunate small prey find themselves here. The creak of ice and a distant drip-drip are harder to place in one’s surroundings, softened so. Despite all this and the quiet skittering from elsewhere, the way they’ve come has been relatively unimpeded. She could almost think the path cleared in advance.

The master wizard looks at her again, expectant, and Faralda says aloud, “You’ve seemed perfectly capable of charting the course thus far. I am, in fact, still unclear why you’ve brought me along at all.”

“Well, you make a decent torch,” says the master wizard lightly, and turns left.

Something twitches in her brow. She measures her steps shorter, so as not to outpace her. “I see. Have you been wasting in administrative work so long you’ve forgotten how to cast a magelight?”

In answer, a flick of black-gloved fingers puts a ball of frozen light overhead, silvering the webbing matted along the floor and ceiling as brightly as the argent shot through her dark hair. “Satisfactory?”

“Unsurprising.” The master wizard glances back with a start. Faralda ducks under a long strand of cobweb dangling from the ceiling, one arm overhead to keep it from catching. “You brought me along for a job you do yourself anyway.”

The master wizard halts abruptly, stands like a very short spire amid a sea of spiderwebs. It is, though, finally, Mirabelle’s wry sliver-smile that casts her way when she says, “Are you suggesting I have trouble delegating?”

“What did the Psijic really want?” She shifts her jaw, does not move to brush the thin white thread from Mirabelle’s shoulder despite the thought thrumming down her arm into her fingertips. “To have us traipse through the Midden in the dark? In search of—?”

“I didn’t leave it that dim,” objects Mirabelle. Then her mouth sets, thin and grim, and she holds up a hand, steeled eyes caught on something on the floor.

Faralda looks down. A perfect heelprint, disturbing the spiders’ work, stiff and sharp and not from the sort of boot any of theirs would wear. Understanding, she takes a step in the direction it points, and finds another half a print just under the length of her own stride.

The path, it seems, has indeed been cleared in advance.

“I will hope,” the master wizard murmurs, “that no Psijic advised our pioneer to pay a visit to the Augur as well.” She straightens herself, braced for whatever they may find ahead. “‘Your efforts should be directed toward dealing with the aftermath.’ That is what the Psijic had to say. He could not, or would not, say the aftermath of what. And the unfortunate thing about aftermath is that it comes—after.”

“That is generally the case, yes,” Faralda says, voice lowered to match hers. “Helpful of him.” Vague but urgent, just as he had seemed at the gate—the Psijic had materialized, seemingly to his own surprise as much as hers, halfway up the incline to the gatehouse, and busied himself straightening his fine yellow robes.

He had not bothered to introduce himself. He had not needed to, in truth. I believe one of my colleagues, he had said instead, to interrupt her interrogatory inhale, spoke with one of your colleagues? And she had thought of their archivist, one thumb pressed to the worried corner of her own mouth in thought, telling her, There was something—someone else, there, in Saarthal—

With her magelight caught again in her palm, the master wizard studies the distance between the prints. “It is Ancano that’s always putting himself where he’ll look taller when you come by, isn’t it?”

“I haven’t noticed such a thing.”

“Haven’t you? Hm.” She cups her other hand around the light. “Onward, then.”

Toward, optimistically, somewhat more auspicious augury, and not a prowling Thalmor or three. Regardless, Faralda takes a breath, readies a precautionary ember at the tip of her tongue. “I see now. I’m not a torch; I’m a ruler.”

“Please,” Mirabelle admonishes. The shadows of her fingers round her magelight flicker across her cheeks, make them look hollower than they are; stark contrast even as she continues with her solemn expression never faltering, “You are at least a yardstick.”

January OTP Prompts

Fun fact! I live in a place that is not cold. However, it has been absolutely freezing the last week to the point where I am currently looking at a North Face puffer coat on the internet and trying to figure out if I order it, if I will still be cold in the 3-5 business days it says it will take to arrive. I have decided to inflict this misery upon Fictional!Matty, however, he at least has a warm coat. I have a denim jacket and a Noah Kahan hoodie.

10. Bundled up

Matty shivered, and wrapped his arms tighter around himself, as he trailed after George. He sniffled and reached up to wipe his runny nose with the sleeve of his parka. He adjusted his scarf to cover more of his face, his fingers feeling clumsy in his mittens. He was bundled up in a long sleeve tee shirt, a heavy sweater, the parka, a heavy knit scarf, and a beanie and he was still freezing. He halted, wincing as a gust of wind tore down the street, sending another shiver up his spine. He didn’t even remember what being warm felt like as they made their way through the snow covered street. 

Jamie had bought him the warmest winter parka he could find in apology when he realized the tour schedule was going to take them to Canada during the winter. Matty was very adamant that he did not do weather colder than London. Even London was too cold for him in the winter. Despite wearing multiple pairs of socks and an extremely unstylish pair of Sorel boots, Matty still couldn’t feel his toes. He would have started crying ages ago if he wasn’t worried that his tears would literally freeze to his face and cause some kind of permanent damage. The strip of skin around his eyes was stinging from the wind and he wondered if it was possible to have already developed frostbite. He wasn’t sure how anyone even lived here, people weren’t meant to be out in these kinds of conditions! He was glad that even their most loyal fans had realized that camping for the concert in this weather was a bad fucking idea. He didn’t even want to be walking down the street, their destination hopefully ahead, he couldn’t imagine them sleeping in tents to see his sniffly ass up close. 

Yet, George was happily plowing ahead, looking at directions on his phone, dragging Matty to some underground used record shop he had seen on instagram that was supposed to be the place to find obscure vinyl. If Matty had realized that around the corner from their hotel meant, around the corner and then straight on a mile and a half he would have insisted on Ubering, or staying behind in the warmth of the hotel room, wearing the complementary slippers and a bathrobe as he made use of the steam shower to try and loosen some of the mucus in his chest. 

“You coming?” George called over his shoulder, his warm breath visible in the cold air. Matty wanted a cigarette but there was absolutely no way he could light it, let alone hold it with how bundled up he was, and he was not sacrificing wearing a mitten even for a fag. He’d also have to pull down his scarf, exposing his face to the elements which was another nope. 

“I think I’ve frozen to the sidewalk,” Matty complained which just made George grin wider, amused by his misery. 

“That just means you need to walk faster,” he teased, picking up his pace as Matty groaned.

He strips slowly, oh so slowly with Elizabeth saying the filthiest things that he’s ever heard, as though he’s merely a toy for her - and there’s something so incredibly arousing about it, something that makes all his thoughts disappear in a haze - as though he’s a whore in a brothel, there to be displayed for her. 

When he’s naked, finally - Elizabeth is still clothed, maddeningly but she pushes him onto the bed and fuck, he cannot remember ever being harder in his life and yet, yet he’s not going to come until she tells him he can - she has him that enchanted and Robert has never been happier. 

“I’m going to tie you to the bed Robin. And then, then I’m going to make you scream my name so loudly that that bitch of a woman will know exactly who you belong to and exactly what she is never going to get.”

She stops a moment, fully clothed, toying with the dagger that he’d gifted her. 

“If you will it?”

In her words is a hesitancy, a willingness to stop if he wishes - the safety and the love in all of it. 

“Whatever you would, my mistress.”

Say the word and I will stop. I will always stop. It is in his Bess’ eyes even as she smirks down at him. 

“Maybe I’ll carve my initials into your skin - mark my dagger and mark my husband? Would you stay still while I did it, while I fuck you?”

He takes it back. He’s never been harder in his life now - he thinks about Elizabeth above him, about her hands on the dagger he gave him, the slight sting as she lightly shapes her initials into his skin, makes tangible what is already true. Thinks about how she might do it while sitting on his face, might let him fuck her with his tongue and christ, he’s so close. 

There’s a satisfaction in how quickly Elizabeth sheds her clothes and both of them are thanking everything for the new fashions that make it so much easier to do so - the Ottoman style trousers, shifts, gowns and coats have far far less to undo. 

She ties him with her sash, grins wickedly at her work. 

Elizabeth is already wet when she guides Robert’s cock into her. In fact she thinks she has never been more so - the way he’s tied with her sash, with her ring on his hand, obeying her words - it’s a rush that almost makes that bitch of a courtier trying to flirt with her husband worth it, to see him beneath her, looking up at her with utter and complete devotion. 

Robert watches Elizabeth stop, then start again - she never quite gets into a rhythm - instead alternating between fast and slow riding him, whispering filth into his ear (“aren’t you so good for me, lying still while I take my pleasure on your cock” “I want to fuck you where everyone can see - or perhaps in a alley like some filthy slut” “you look like you belong in a harem Robin - laid out for my pleasure alone”) and then, then she takes out the dagger. It’s beautiful. 

It hardly hurts in truth, when Elizabeth traces the knife across his hip - he’s had worse cuts from accidents and he almost, almost wants more - the cool knife on his hot skin, the way Elizabeth is so graceful in her work means he ends up urging her to go deeper, more, more - mark me Bess. She just smirks and is even gentler which makes him moan and beg. In the end, Robert doesn’t think he’s ever come so hard, especially when Elizabeth orders him to scream her name. 

He hopes the whole fucking palace heard them.

Fandom Problem #5476:

"if seeing a character or ship you don't like gives you an anxiety attack there's something seriously wrong with you, you need to go outside and touch some grass" so, the thing is, I actually AM one of those people who sees someone say a bad thing about their favorite show or character or OTP and then feel rotten about it for the rest of the day, or feel sick when i see someone ship my favorite character with my least favorite character. I know it's ridiculous, I know it is, it's dumb, and I know none of it is real and what other random strangers think about the things I like shouldn't such an effect me. And yet? I don't make MY issues other people's problem. It's up to me to do my best to avoid seeing things I know upset me. Sometimes it could be hard to avoid, but that's still no excuse to lash out or throw a temper tantrum. Block. Mute. Scroll faster. Back button. These are all things people could do when they see something they don't like. Yeah it won't erase it from your memory, but neither will taking the time to type up an anon hate message. Stop acting like people are out to get you for liking or not liking different things than you. (I gotta keep telling myself too.)

Hey! I've been following you for a while and I've noticed you've been posting a lot of Hasbin Hotel content, especially Charlie x Alestor stuff.

Honestly, I haven't really watched the show. (I do listen to the soundtrack. That sh!t is 🔥) That being said, I don't get the whole drama about the ship. Literally any fandom has shippers. And while their are some ships I don't like, sometimes it's better to keep those opinions to yourself. There's no need to cry online about a pairing of two fictional characters.

As long as both characters are consenting adults and are not related, it shouldn't matter. These characters aren't real people.

Tldr, I haven't watched Hasbin Hotel (and I don't think I will) but I say, don't listen to the haters. ❤️

I’ve been dealing with haters for months now and I’ve gotten used to shutting them down (cuz in the end they have no ground to stand on, cuz there’s actually nothing inherently wrong with Charlastor they just want a reason to be mad). I never understood what 'falling in love' was supposed to mean. The only person I ever truly loved was John Watson.

That’s the thing though, I have just loved John Watson. There wasn’t any sort of… falling… where would I fall from anyway? It is a ridiculous expression. There never was a harsh landing on the process of loving John.

If we must take use of metaphors, I would say that I always have loved John fatefully, steadily, like water. Like a lake, at times like the ocean even. Of course, sometimes the water is rough but most of the time it is… present. It is wide, it is deep, it is inviting, and yet frightening. The fascination and pull some people feel from the water – that’s what I feel for John.

The love I feel for Mrs. Hudson, for Lestrade, for Molly, for Mycroft even, that had been hard-earned. I wouldn’t admit it. Not with words. However my love for these people is unsteady. Sometimes I can’t stand any of them, like the water – the river – was too demanding, too winding.

When I stood up there, with Moriarty, him explaining his genius plan, pushing me into a quandary, I was forced to drown myself. But at least not drain all water.

How I feel about this character

  Well, Darry’s ok. I think he’s incredibly well-written. I like him fine, you just haven’t heard me talk abt him cos I don’t have all that much to say abt him :,) 

  I relate to him in some ways, but every time I think too hard about him I get nervous because his situation is…nightmarish for me and it freaks me out in a way that isn’t entertaining (the way writing other angst I relate to is for me) but just…existential dread. 

All the people I ship romantically with this character

  Darry and Paul probably had something going on- at least from what I’ve heard from the musical side of things it seems not platonic, idk abt the book/movie tho

  And him and Tim Shepard in the 90s show were…something too. I dunno what exactly, but…somrething. I get where the tarry shippers are coming from and yk I like that kinda.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

  Two-Bit! I don't ship them, but I think they were closer growing up and sorta stopped being best friends in high school once Darry joined the football team. But they’ll always care for each other, and Two-Bit can read Darry better than anyone. 

  I do think that they mutually make each other insecure about their older-brothering abilities. Like Darry’s insecure because Two-Bit’s never really fought with his kid sister (at least rn- I hc that they fight more as she gets older) and Two-Bit’s insecure because Darry’s so responsible and Two-Bit isn’t really. They’ve never talked about this and probably never will, at least not until they’re older.

  I think once Pony and Soda are older and Darry’s less stressed, Two-Bit helps him re-learn how to be young and irresponsible. There was a line from a movie I watched recently (Calendar Girl, 1993) (Ridiculous sounding movie but it’s one of my favs now) with a line that went something like 

  “So you don’t like me because I get you drunk, but you do like me because I stick around while you throw up?”

  “Yeah. You’re one of my best friends.” 

And that’s sorta their dynamic to me rn. I think back in elementary school/junior high it was reversed, with Darry pushing Two-Bit to be more confident, but it completely 180s now that they’re grown.

My unpopular opinion about this character

  He acts immature sometimes/often. He’s not the gang’s “dad”, or even considered the “responsible” one generally. Yk, he’s not immune to having teen boy-ish bravado- like how he leaves the door unlocked because he’s convinced he can take anyone who’d break in. (He’s real for that- I too feel like I could easily take on any home intruder :) ‘course Darry’s stronger than me and like 6’2 so he probably could better than I could, but yk the point is that it’s very teen boy/young man of him ig)

  I feel like before his folks died he was a lot less responsible- I’ve written one fic pre-canon where he’s more easy going because he doesn’t have the child service workers breathin down his neck yet lol. But yk, he probably snuck out at night in high school, did dumb things like any other kid. I mean I’m a good kid, but even I’ve been kicked outta stores- I’m sure Darry’s been too. Maybe he didn’t smoke, but he probably drank a bit and got speeding tickets and did other stupid shit to impress his buddies. (C’mon, who hasn’t?) (Actually maybe I’m not as good as I think maybe that’s not normal idk I’m not gonna think abt that rn)

  Other controversial opinion…while I know it’s symbolic, I don’t l o v e how Patrick Swayze was like 10 years older than Darry was supposed to be in the movie- I’m so sorry- he did a GREAT job as the character! But he just doesn’t read as 20 to me no matter how hard I try to suspend my disbelief and it’s bugged me for years- It’s not as bad as Mason’s actor in Tex, but I just. Don’t like it :,) Again I’m so sorry nothing against Swayze! I think he’s great, just…I wish he’d been ten years younger in Outsiders 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

  I dunno lol. Again, I ain’t got that many thoughts about him…I think he fulfilled his role for me and there’s not a lot more I’d wanna see from him. 

  …Well, actually, I’d love to see him hanging with Mason McCormick. but that would never happen in canon so yk

5 OTPs and 1 ultimate OTP

Deciding on my ultimate OTP was the easy part, it was picking the 5 others that took some time. I've had many ships over the years, some I obsessed over more than others but these are what I decided on as my top 5.

John/Aeryn - Farscape

John and Aeryn were one of my very first ships, before I even really knew what shipping was. I discovered them back in the very early 2000s and quickly fell head over heels for them. For a wacky, crazy, sexy and wonderfully weird sci-fi show, Farscape told one of the best love stories I've ever seen. The chemistry, the natural build up, the tension and their whole journey's, individually and together makes these two one of the best ships ever.

Sometimes it seems shows can be reluctant to put their two leads together, even when they are clearly right for each other, because they think it won't be as interesting once they are romantically involved. However, Farscape proved that with good writing it can work exceptionally well and add to the story in such a positive way. They also stayed clear of some of the more cliched storytelling, not just when it came to John and Aeryn's romance but the series in general. Farscape gave us a truly memorable romance and after 4 seasons it was finished up in the most perfect way in a miniseries.

For over 2 decades, John and Aeryn were my ultimate OTP, even when I found new ships I always came back to them because they were written so amazingly well and got the happy ending that many of my other ships never did. They had drama, angst and they even both died on separate occasions but they won out and the mini series gave them the perfect happy ending. John and Aeryn will always hold a special place in my heart, they are an example of how love stories can be told right.

Hetty and Trevor - Ghosts US

Okay, this is a very new ship for me having only discovered them at the end of last year and I really couldn't help but fall for them. Hetty and Trevor are two people who really shouldn't work together at all but somehow they really do. Ridiculous, hilarious and adorable, these two just drew me in but what's a little different for me from my other ships is I'm still not sure whether I want them to be a true romantic couple or if I just want them to get back to where they were in season 2. Their hook ups were so wonderful and they play off each other so well that I just really need these two to get back together in some way. Ghosts US writers, please make it happen, these two have way too much potential and chemistry to be pushed aside. I need more H-Money in my life!

Jack and Sam - Stargate SG1

Jack and Sam were a ship who were never explicitly said to be together but there were many hints, in later seasons, that they were. Rules and regulations pretty much forbad a romantic relationship, though in many alternate realities they were together. The feelings between them were clear, showing themselves at various moments throughout the series, some more subtle than others but they were always present in some form. This is another pairing who had wonderful chemistry on and off screen and I love them both dearly. I know Jack and Sam are together and living happily ever after, I won't except anything else.

Xena and Gabrielle - Xena: Warrior Princess

Another ship where it was never explicitly said in the show they were together but was very much implied. These two are beautiful and had this show been made today, they most definitely would have been together. I've had a few F/F ships over the years, one which hurt me quite badly despite actually getting a happy ending and another which has yet to really set sail but Xena and Gabrielle, though I wish their ending was different, are still a ship I return to quite often and are still very dear to me.

Miranda and Gary - Miranda

Miranda and Gary are the most adorable ship and I love them to pieces. I'm not often a fan of ships in sitcoms, for some reason they don't seem to hit the right notes for me but there is something about these two and how their story was told that I just fell in love with. They really bring out the best in each other, they get each other on a level that few others do and they get their happy ending, which it seems isn't always a thing for many of my ships. Miranda is a show I can watch over and over, it's one of my comfort shows and always picks me up if I'm feeling down. They are just the most lovable and sweet ship and just make me so happy.

Rick and Michonne (Richonne) - The Walking Dead

Now, what can I say to describe these two beautiful people and their amazing love story?

Finding such a gorgeous love story in a show with zombies was never something I thought I'd do, I never thought it would be the kind of show I'd watch either but here we are. I discovered Richonne during a search on Tumblr for another ship I was into at the time, a ship which sadly did not end well, but I did find these two so something positive came out of it. I was drawn in by GIFS, their chemistry and connection shone through in just a few seconds and I was so intrigued to find out more about them. I watched TWD just for them and in all honesty they are the only reason I still keep up with the show.

Richonne have something I've not seen in any other ship I've had, though I'm not sure I can quite put my finger on what that is. Their chemistry is electric and so natural that they really make the love story believable and realistic. Andy and Dania's off screen friendship is also beautiful, the love, care and trust they have for each other is clear to see and I love watching their off screen interactions too. They really are friendship goals! Plus they are just as big Richonne shippers as us and it makes me love them even more.

Rick and Michonne are one of a kind, they are in a league of their own when it comes to chemistry and storytelling and are the only ship I've had that not only have their own show dedicated to their love story, but both actors are also co-creators, co-writers and executive producers. Not only that but Danai wrote an episode herself and I don't think I'm exaggerating here when I say it is one of the best episodes in the history of TWD. Though to me it is the best.

From the moment they met at the fence to the final scene in TOWL 1x06, Richonne have proved time and time again why they are not only the best couple on TWD but to me, the best couple to have ever graced my screen. They could give lessons on how a love story should be told, how longing, romance and deep unbreakable love should be portrayed on screen. They love each other so purely, so intensely and so completely that it's palpable and being the love of each others lives is not just assumed but proved and vocalised too.

This is a couple who are both warriors, they have had to resort to extreme measures to survive and to keep the people they love safe and while that is one side to them, they are also very soft, gentle and loving with each other. They are both willing to do anything to keep each other and their kids safe.

Also, they are both extremely attractive people who make an insanely good looking couple!

This is why Richonne is my ultimate OTP and I have a feeling they may just remain in that spot forever.

I really do hope for Buddie to become cannon but Tommy and Buck are so cute together and I am afraid of how they would (will, I am pretty sure they will) break that up. I don't want them to make Tommy a bad person and they obviously adore each other so like what else will the do. Kill Tommy? Obviously I don't want that to happen either but also I don't think the show at this point would do that (though that could be a buddie bonding moment...). So are they just gonna fall out of love? Idk I'm just curious and also a bit terrified of whats to come.

Lol, same! I am still excited for the possibility of Buddie, but I am really loving BuckTommy...honestly, I'd be pretty satisfied with either for an endgame at this point. I just really want Buck to finally get his Happily Ever After, WHATEVER form that takes.

Honestly, though, even if/when Buck and Tommy break up, it doesn't have to be traumatic. I think there's a real tendency for people to view a relationship ending as it having FAILED, and that's just not the case. Sometimes people really are just meant to be in your life for a short time, and there's nothing wrong with that. It would totally be believable that as Tommy and Buck get more serious, they encounter things that just ultimately make them incompatible.

I see the big one being a disagreement about wanting kids--Buck is MEANT to be a father, and I will die on that hill. That boy wants a family, wants to give a kid all the love that he never got as a child and I don't see him staying with a partner who doesn't also want that. We have no idea how Tommy feels about kids, but I could see that being the easiest way to give them an issue big enough that they part ways. Career moves would also be a good way to give them something that's a "dealbreaker". I could maybe (MAYBE) at this point see Buck be willing to leave the 118 for a relationship--move somewhere else in California or the surrounding states where he would still be able to be a regular part of everyone's life. But what if Tommy gets a great job offer somewhere back East? No way Buck would be willing to move across the country.

And that's just the low-hanging fruit. Ultimately, if BuckTommy does break up, I think it's important for Buck's character growth that it IS something mature and adult--no cheating, no vicious fights, no one's the bad guy. Just two people who care about each other a lot, but ultimately want different paths in life.

I've said a lot that my true OTP in this show is Buck/Happiness. I love the idea that he could find that with his best friend and the kid they've been raising together since Eddie walked into the 118. But I also really like that he's got someone who is so clearly just SMITTEN with him (like seriously, how Old Hollywood Charm was the phrasing "you're a vision" even tho the actual sentence was ridiculous? Like, yes, those two are engaging in super kinky sex, but they also slow dance in the kitchen and buy each other flowers just because, you can't tell me otherwise) and am eager to see where they go with this. Ultimately, I trust Tim, and trust that Oliver Stark loves Buck enough to fight for a satisfying storyline for him and I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

rose-scented products remind phoenix of kristoph, it's the scent he always wore. also, the sound of a violin, lavender nail polish, and certain pastries and cakes kristoph was partial to- if phoenix sees them in a store he's briefly reminded of him.

art museums and galleries always make kristoph think of phoenix, he doesnt think he actually understood the point of going to one (other than to appear cultured) until he took phoenix to a gallery show to flex his wealth and saw how clearly passioniate phoenix was. also playing cards, the sound of a child playing the piano, and the taste of cheap wine on his tongue.

occassionally these things give kristoph and phoenix a brief sense of urgency or danger.

phoenix's depression is kicking his ass most of the time, but on a good day he's absolutely dances like a dad as he cooks. kristoph watches from the doorway and rolls his eyes. he doesnt join in, phoenix looks ridiculous. sometimes trucy might join her dad, they both look ridiculous. the wrights start calling kristoph a buzzkill and bully him into joining them, now they all look ridiculous. what a ridiculous family.

From OTP to OC’s: How to scrub your favorite fandom couple into original characters

Plot out a completely new story that you are dying to write—because all your favorite stuff is still there.

If you’re a fanfiction writer, you probably have at least one OTP (One True Pairing, meaning your favorite fictional romantic couple). You might have written them a beautiful story (or thirty) on AO3.

But at some point, you may want to take your OTP out of fandom and into the world of original fiction. Possibly because it makes your writing accessible to people who aren’t part of your fandom, and possibly (probably) because unlike fanfic, for original fiction, you can actually get paid.

So how on earth do you take other people’s characters and make them your own, without getting rid of the fire that sparks your muse?

In my journey from fanfic to original fic, I started by writing AUs (alternate universes) of my first OTP, Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens. In an AU, you are making big changes to the source material, but leaving in most of what your fandom loves about the characters. In a Good Omens AU, Aziraphale and Crowley are often human instead of angel and demon, but the basic enemies-to-lovers trope usually remains, along with the personalities of the characters, and as many similarities to the original story as you can fit in.

Scrubbing (that really is the technical term) fandom all the way to original is the same process, it just goes farther. When you’re done scrubbing, the only things left about your OTP will be the pieces you as a writer can’t live without.

So what are those pieces? Well, it’s entirely subjective. But you can follow these five steps to find them:

1. List your characters’ traits

We’re going to take as example an OTP I am currently scrubbing, which is just as cringy as all of your OTP’s: Link and Sidon from The Legend of Zelda Nintendo games. You don’t need to have any idea who that is to follow this article. But here are their character traits, the good and the flaws:

Link: human (or elf?) male, great hero of legend, very good at fighting, quiet, private, helpful, mischievous, possibly in love with someone he doesn’t remember (Princess Zelda), guilty, and haunted by past failures.

Sidon: 7-foot-tall shark man, gregarious, ridiculously optimistic and complimentary, charming, nerdy, sometimes over-confident, a good fighter, ages slowly compared to humans (or elves), and oh yeah, he’s a prince. 

Note that these don’t have to be the traits the fandom at large assigns to these characters. This is the way you see them.

2. List your ship’s tropes

“Ship” is short for relationship, in this case our romance. So for these dudes, we have: human/nonhuman or human/monster, royal/commoner, long lifespan/short lifespan, and size difference.

3. List your plot’s main points

In the two games that have Sidon (Link’s in all the games), Link has to go to four different places and help four different peoples (leaving Sidon behind), then beat a bad guy in a castle, and save the world.

4. Scrub in

Now we’re ready for the operation. You’re going to go through everything you listed and start throwing things out. As you do, ask yourself this question: Does my heart still race? 

If you take out a piece and your muse is still humming for this OTP, then let it go. But if the absence of that part ruins the whole thing for you, then leave it in. Remember, you don’t want people to recognize this as a certain fandom or ship, so take out everything you possibly can.

So for the Link/Sidon ship, I’m asking myself, Does it matter (to me) that one is royalty? Does it matter that they age differently? Does it matter that one’s two feet taller? Does it matter that one is a monster? Do I still need to have a save-the-world plot? Do I still need them to be separated sometimes during the story? And so on. Again, this is entirely subjective: leave in only what floats your personal boat.

5. Make it weird

You have your list! Congrats! Now it’s time to change every other detail you can, because you want to make your story as different from the original as possible.

Let’s say I decide I really want to keep my monster character. Then it definitely shouldn’t be a shark man like Sidon. So I’m asking myself the same kinds of questions: Does it matter (to me) that he’s seven feet tall? Does it matter that he has sharp teeth? Does it matter that he can breathe underwater? And so on. 

Perhaps the only thing I really care about is my monster’s size. In that case, I need to come up with a large humanoid creature that’s as different from a shark as possible: maybe a centaur, bear shapeshifter, giant alien bird person, or scientist that had an accident in the cloning lab. 

Let character and plot shape each other into a completely new story that you are dying to write—because all your favorite stuff is still there.

Here are two original stories I wrote based on fandom ships:

You Don’t Say: When two fake psychic con men who secretly pine for each other are forced to work together to solve a disappearance, they discover that one of them is actually psychic. But which one? This is Aziraphale and Crowley, with the tropes of enemies-to-lovers, dorkiness, and bickerflirting preserved, along with elements of magic. Turns out those were the only pieces I couldn’t let go, and the resulting story is nothing like Good Omens, but was really fun to write.

Bloom: A shy older man with magical abilities becomes the muse of a beautiful young male artist. This comes from one of my OTPs from the 2018 TV show The Terror: John Bridgens and Henry Peglar, an older man/younger man, teacher/student ship. I left in the age difference (toned down quite a bit), and kept the outgoing/shy trope, but changed the teacher into an artist’s muse with a gift of magic. This story has very little in common with a horror show about Sir John Franklin’s doomed 1840’s arctic expedition—except the few parts I couldn’t live without.

There is one major disadvantage for a fanfic writer moving to original fiction: you will not get nearly as many readers for original fic. But remember, readers in your fandom are there because they love the same character traits and tropes you do, some of which will be preserved in your story. You may not have as many readers, but you will get some fans of your own! And maybe even some sales.

Who is the cheesier one of the two? mr wille "cheese" eriksson who, as we all know, leaves poetry excerpts that remind him of simon on sticky notes on simon's pillow and in his lunch and on the bathroom mirror and on the fridge door too sometimes (when they're out of sticky notes he texts him). simon keeps all of them though, which doesn't make him a winner here but a worthy competitor nonetheless.

24. Sleeping/cuddling positions? (Big spoon, little spoon, etc.)? i feel like wille's quality of sleep improves when he's hugging something or someone, so as long as he's got his arms around simon in some way or another he's good. his favorite is when they're lying on the couch, wille stretched out between simon's legs with his head on simon's chest, so simon can play with his hair while they watch tv. simon always ends up starfishing on his stomach while he sleeps so no matter how they go to sleep, he'll mostly wake up with an arm on wille's chest, his head on wille's shoulder and a leg hiked up high on top of wille's.

Splitting these up into two posts again as I rambled on for way too long. And this way, I can post at least part of it sooner <3. This one is the krisnix one.

10. Describe their first date

They have like three "first dates" lol. The first would be the first time Kristoph invites Phoenix to join him for dinner at the Borscht after Phoenix finishes his shift there (or in-between shifts). Kristoph offers to pick up the check (he will do this on all their subsequent dates as well, and Phoenix doesn't resist in the least). Phoenix *technically* gets an employee discount when he dines at the Borscht but he never uses it with Kristoph--both because he enjoys making Kristoph spend more--and because he knows that Kristoph himself is enough of a snob that he'd hate feeling like a "cheap date" who couldn't afford to pay the proper bill.

Neither of them really expects this to turn into a regular thing. They just happen to be there (either Kristoph was working on a case in the area or purposely sought Phoenix out following the Bar Association's ruling) and be hungry at the same time. So they figure that they might as well eat together and talk through the conversation. And again, both of them are pretty surprised at how agreeable they find each other's company.

Phoenix is much more intelligent and well-read than his unpolished "every man" exterior would suggest--largely due to his time as an arts major. And Kristoph is surprised at how much they have to talk about. He may not be as cultured as Kristoph by a long shot, but he's surprisingly interesting and insightful, nevertheless. And the conversations end up being a lot more stimulating (in more ways than one) and engrossing than Kristoph ever expected.

Meanwhile even though Kristoph Gavin comes across as the coldest, most remote and pretentious person that you've ever met at first (and to be fair, there is a good bit of that in him still), Phoenix is amazed at how full-of-life-and-light Kristoph can be when you catch him on the right topic. He positively gushes about dogs and tells the funniest, warmest stories about Klavier-as-a-small-child. It's rather adorable and super unexpected. He's also surprisingly funny. His wit is much drier than Phoenix's own, and a bit more biting. But still, it's there and it's sometimes irrestitable. Plus, Kristoph is also funny in unintentional ways, given how stiff and formal and seemingly stoic he often is. So much so that Phoenix can't help but look at him and laugh--simultaneously with derision (i.e. "can you fucking believe this guy?") and with genuine affection (i.e.. "it's fucking cute how ridiculous he is without meaning to be.")

Their second "first date" would be the first time that they do something together in a place other than the Borscht Bowl. Neither of them come even close to acknowledging it as a date. This is simply an" outing that we will do together since I enjoy your company and we are sort of 'friends' now." It probably comes about rather organically. Kristoph mentions a different restaurant that he recently tried with Klavier and wonders if Phoenix has ever tried it. (Of course, he hasn't. The entrees cost more than he makes in a given night at the Borscht). Which then naturally extends to Kristoph saying that it's a pity Phoenix hasn't had a chance to go yet, and perhaps, he and Kristoph might go together some evening as friends.

Their third "first date" would be much the same as one of the ones that came before. But with a crucial difference. They are still nowhere near identifying this particular outing as a "date." But since their last "first date," their "friendship" has since extended to include physical intimacy of some kind. Maybe they've had a drunken kiss or two--or maybe they've actually done teh sex. Nevertheless, they are both acutely aware that things are DIFFERENT between them from then on, while also stubbornly refusing to admit to each other that things are different. They know this is a date. They know that they are much more than friends--even ones "with benefits"--but you will never get them to acknowledge this fact. This is just a shared social experience between two men who enjoy each other's company and lips and there is nothing more to it than that. (There is a great deal more to it than that).

Sadly, they never got to the point of a fourth "first date" (i.e. one that they openly acknowledge as a date) in canon, but they still can in my heart.

14. How do their personalities compliment each other? How do they clash?

Both Phoenix and Kristoph are artistically-minded, driven, and very intelligent (albeit in different ways.) As I mentioned in the previous point, Phoenix is somewhat more "cultured" than one would imagine and Kristoph is not *quite* as much of a humorless stick-in-the-mud than he appears. So they actually find that they have a great deal to talk about and can enjoy each other's company. Due to the circumstances that brought them together, there is inevitably a little bit of a facade to their "friendship" but not nearly as much of one as you might think.

In terms of their differences counterbalancing each other, Kristoph's cautious and reserved nature helps reign in some of Phoenix's unhinged impulsiveness. Meanwhile, Phoenix's sense of humor and spontaneity can sometimes force Kristoph to stop taking everything (especially himself) so damn seriously and to open himself up to life outside professional success.

However, it isn't all smooth sailing for them. These same differences can cause friction between them just as often as they smooth it. Moreover, the fact that both men are extremely stubborn also leads to clashes.

As a workaholic and supremely ambitious person in his own right, Kristoph also finds himself frequently frustrated by Phoenix Wright's perceived laziness and lack of ambition. They both know that Phoenix is capable of being more than dubiously sober piano bum and illegal poker player at a mediocre dive bar. So why isn't Phoenix "trying" harder to find something better for himself?

Meanwhile, Kristoph is also trying very hard not to acknowledge that Phoenix's current state is very much Kristoph's own fault. He tries to convince Phoenix to lift himself out of his sorry state, at least in part to ease Kristoph's own conscience.

Kristoph is also very unaware that much of Phoenix's perceived lazy, aimlessness is an act--one carefully tailored to lull Kristoph into a false sense of security so that Phoenix can make his move.

Naturally, the biggest barrier between them is the one that they can never directly acknowledge. Kristoph's role in orchestrating Phoenix's disbarment and Phoenix's complete awareness of this fact. On the rare occasion that the topic comes up indirectly in conversation (ex: any mention of Phoenix's former legal career, Kristoph's Bar Association duties, Trucy's life before Phoenix, media coverage of the so-called "Dark Age of Law,"etc.) things between Kristoph and Phoenix become decidedly more tense than usual. Lots of sarcastic remarks, comments that can be taken in more than one way, and little arguments over matters that would normally not have provoked such a response. Again, they can't ever discuss the real state of things openly so they have their little proxy spats and then quickly try to change the subject.

30. Your OTP gets to pick out each other’s outfits; what is each wearing?

Phoenix loves to make Kristoph dress more casually--both because it's cute but also because he thinks it's mentally/psychologically "good" for Kristoph. He will be more relaxed when he wears clothing that is softer, looser, and/or more comfortable. I think Kristoph probably has a Gavinners-branded hoodie or sweatshirt that is leftover merch from Klavier, and Phoenix is constantly trying to persuade him into wearing it--ideally with jeans instead of Kristoph's normal dress pants. He eventually gives in, partly because Phoenix Wright is unbelievably stubborn but also partially because damn it, the sweatshirt (though far too casual for professional use) is very soft and very warm--and Kristoph has always been the sort of person who gets cold easily. And there is something very relaxing and soothing about letting himself dress for warmth and physical comfort instead of trying to impress people. Also he feels much freer to cuddle with Vongole (which is also psychologically very good for him) when he's less concerned about getting dog hair on his nice work clothes.

Kristoph, conversely, likes to dress Phoenix up. Underneath that dreadful hat and sweatshirt, Phoenix Wright is a rather handsome man with nice broad-shoulders, a pleasingly strong jaw, and bright, twinkling eyes. He really should show off his handsome features and physique. And yet, he hides himself in this loose, plebian garb and two days worth of stubble. (Kristoph is in deep denial about how much he likes Phoenix's stubble. Phoenix is completely aware of the effect he has on the other man).

So Kristoph is always looking for excuses to put Phoenix in a suit or even just a button-down shirt with a tie. And sometimes, Phoenix is willing to indulge him, even if it still feels weird to put on his "trial suit" to go anywhere other than courtroom. But he does like reminding Kristoph (and himself) just how nicely he can clean up when he wants to.

(Kristoph is so lucky that he never got to see three-piece suit dilfnix and his waistcoat of sexyness. He would've died of lust on the spot, and all Phoenix would've done was laugh.)

Another "compromise" is that Kristoph is able to talk Phoenix into a bit more often is a short-sleeve polo shirt. A little more dressy than his normal hoodie but still not properly formal.

(Of course, Kristoph never quite thinks through the ramifications of this. He is Victorian level of repressed-yet-horny. And so the instant, Phoenix's bare forearms enter the chat, kristoph.exe promptly stops working.)

39. Who would rescue an injured animal and nurse it back to health? What would the other think?

Honestly, I think its fairly plausible that either would do this. But honestly, it's much more interesting to think about Kristoph being the one to do it so that's where I'm gonna focus.

This could be a possible backstory for Vongole acquisition. Kristoph's job led him to find the most Beautiful Dog in the World™ left abandoned (and possibly wounded) after her owner died or went to prison. At first, he intends to take Vongole in for a short while until he can find a new home for her. (She's a purebred and a very good girl so Kristoph isn't ready to just dump her in an animal shelter's care and hope for the best). But it's not long until he finds himself just completely enraptured by her and unable to imagine his life without her.

Phoenix, meanwhile, has enjoyed watching this unfold from a bit of a distance. He doesn't meet Vongole officially for awhile, but he notices how quickly Kristoph is completely "puppy-whipped" for her. Kristoph can't stop talking about this "foster" dog he's looking after. He talks about more even than he talks about work--which is saying something. His eyes light up behind his glasses and he can't stop smiling when he's chattering about how SMART and cultured Vongole is, because she sits and listens and wags her tail whenever Kristoph is practicing his violin. And she's so got the most refined palette too. She likes only the best dog food made from the finest ingredients.

It's adorable seeing Kristoph like this, so happy and relaxed and at peace with himself. Even with all the baggage between himself and Kristoph, Phoenix genuinely likes seeing his frenemy in this light and is happy for him.

After a few months worth of Kristoph "fostering" Vongole, he finally announces that he's decided to keep her permanently and Phoenix is all ...

(Phoenix saw this coming about a week after Vongole came into Kristoph's life).

I am also struck by another possible "Kristoph-rescues-a-wounded-animal scenario" as well and would like to discuss it. In this case, I think Kristoph should find and take care of a wounded bird (preferably a baby). I think the most narratively satisfying (i.e. metaphorically resonant) would involve Kristoph having accidentally caused the bird's injury in the first place. Maybe he accidentally hit a passing bird with his car or caused the bird to fall out of its nest and injure itself, while Kristoph was tending to his garden. Kristoph would therefore have to take accountability for having hurt something so beautiful and delicate and would see his nursing the bird back to health as an atonement for his past missteps.

Phoenix, meanwhile, would have very mixed reactions to seeing Kristoph's diligent care for this particular bird. He can't help but feel a little envious seeing Kristoph take responsibility for his harmful actions in this respect, while Kristoph has utterly failed to do the same where Phoenix is concerned. The significance of this being a bird--and Phoenix's own name being a (mythical) bird is not at all lost on him either. But on the other hand, he sees Kristoph being so patient and caring and gentle with this little wounded bird, and Phoenix can't help but love him for it. Can't help but wonder if--if only circumstances were just a little different and if he and/or Kristoph were able to swallow their pride for long enough--maybe Kristoph would have been able to do the same thing with Phoenix after all. But of course, they are doomed by themselves, their anger, and the narrative so this would never happen.

If the bird is unable to be safely released back into the wild after all--or Kristoph is simply unwilling to let the bird go-- it's also possible that the caged blue bird in Kristoph's cell is in fact this very same bird. Which adds some additional metaphorical resonance to the obvious Phoenix-bird parallels. Either Kristoph has already damaged the bird (and Phoenix) so severely and irrevocably that even his most ardent attempts at atonement/undoing the harm are not nearly enough. Or Kristoph has become so mentally and emotionally attached to the bird (and Phoenix) that he refuses to let it fly away from him--especially while Kristoph himself is wasting away in prison.

42. What’s their favorite type of weather to enjoy together? (getting snowed in together, watching thunderstorms, etc.)

Phoenix most enjoys bright, warm sunny days (especially in the summertime). This is more in general than relating to Kristoph specifically. There is so much more to do when the weather is nice--including a few particular things that he enjoys doing with Trucy and often with Kristoph as well. They've gone berry-picking a few times (on Kristoph's dime), something that neither Kristoph nor Trucy had ever done before and something that they are both pleasantly surprised by. They will go for picnics at the park and talk Kristoph into taking Vongole with them. (Trucy enjoys playing several rounds of fetch with her afterwards). Sometimes, when they have a day at the pool, Kristoph will wear a big, floppy hat to keep the sun off his face, and Phoenix can't help but find it rather endearing.

Kristoph, meanwhile, enjoys the rain. Or more specifically, a steady, lightning-less medium downpour that is heavy enough to keep everyone indoors (and prevent Phoenix from leaving too soon) and water the grass, while still being nowhere near heavy enough for there to be any danger of flooding.

He enjoys taking Vongole for walks after the rain and breathing in the fresh, clean scent of the air. He particularly enjoys it when he is able to rope Phoenix (and sometimes Trucy and/or Klavier) into joining him. Especially on the very memorable occasion that they saw a full rainbow just as the sun was starting to set.

I remember all the handwringing over Reylo, how it would teach young girls that abuse was okay, how it would lead them to accept being mistreated, how liking him was as bad as a girl who thirsts over school shooters, etc. And yet look! Society has yet to become pro-abuse and the fans of the pairing who identify as women have not been murdered by their romantic partners en masse.

But despite this open contempt for the pairing, people also convinced themselves the only reason you could ship Kylo/any guy was hatred of women and not, y'know, trying to avoid the obsessed haters who had devoted anti-Reylo blogs for 5+ years. Also it was totally unhealthy of you to ship Kylo with anyone, said people with a dedicated blog where they discussed their hatred of a fictional man for half a decade, and you should get therapy for your sickness.

My personal least favorite moment of the the new trilogy fandom's plague of antis was them attacking a friend of mine. See, if you don't ship Finnrey, you're an anti-black racist (unless you ship Finnpoe in which case you are of course a misogynist fetishizing Poe, a space Latine). No one told my friend this, so she very obliviously drew some Finnlo, and all hell broke lose. People said it was like shipping a slave with a Nazi, that it demonstrated the dehumanization of black men by fandom, that it was akin to zoophilia since Kylo owned Finn, etc. It hit a peak of ridiculousness when someone self-harmed and sent my friend video of them doing so to show her how 'wrong' it was to ship the two.

My friend responded by contacting the parents of the person who self-harmed. Cue antis saying she was an adult harassing a minor. You know, because if one person is putting cigarettes out on themselves to spite someone on the internet and another person is saying "that's concerning", the latter is in the wrong, obviously.

I'm not even in this fandom but I support Reylo and Finnlo out of sheer spite at this point because I hated the manipulation and massive freakouts from the Finnrey crowd so much.

Sometimes people are going to ship something that's not your OTP and that's okay. It's not worth burning your skin off for.

Kylo is ew, but supposed Finn fans who can't even see that Finn also had an interesting potential connection with Kylo in that first film are idiots.
